Not Looking Good

How many (decent) Hindi films were released in month February? Only two films - ‘Mithya’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’! There were also two more films - “Rama Rama Yeh Kya Hain Drama” and “Superstar” released and disappeared without a trace. It seems the year 2008 hasn’t started as well as it was expected/predicated to be. Let’s look at the March releases.

Subhash Ghai’s “Black & White” will be the first release of March. I have already done a sort of preview of the film earlier, but will say a few more words about it. No harm in that, eh? What was I going to say? My first impression of the film were good, but now I just think.. it is a bit crap. Erm… is that enough?

26th July At Barista” will be the second release of the month. I had not heard about this film - did you guys knew about this film? I only found about the film when I just checked March’s release. I have not seen any promos of the film. I have not read anything about the film. So I did a bit of googling on the film and came across the website of the film and synopsis:

The movie is a salute to the spirit of Mumbai and World Humanity. The Natural catastrophe which destructed many lives of People and Property and laid the bare fact that nobody is above the nature. But the human spirit moves ahead to fight & make his & other lives for a better tomorrow. An example to glory and fighting spirit of Mumbaikars.

The people from all class and segment of life come under the roof of Barista on that fateful night of 26th July and the trauma they undergo each in his own way.

It sounds a bit interesting. It seems the film is being made by newcomers - I don’t recognize any names in the cast & crew list. Anyone know more about this film?

Then there is Abbas Mastan’s “Race” - how quickly to copy a DVD? And their partner in crime - Pritam - also specializes in copying. That Atif song is copy of this song. So Race is copy of which film? Can you guys tell that from the trailers?

What else is there? Our Hindi Film diet is heavily made of masala films, so can a month go by without a masala film hitting the theater? No? You guessed it right.

In Marach, the masala film will be “One Two Three“. How many of you can tell the cast of the film from the title? It is not a rocket science question. Paresh Rawal, Sunil Shetty, Tushar Kapoor, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, and Esha Deol. Her ma - Hema Malini complained or moaned that Esha Deol does not get any good roles, which would test her as an actresses. But that does not explain why she keeps doing same kind of role over and over.

Anyway, so what is “One Two Three” about? Well, the cast is a bit big, so the film is about confusion, some sex jokes, some item numbers, some of that and some of this. You don’t need to know more than that. The film could be a hit because the film industry is a bit depressed and down even though we had Mithya and Jodha Akbar. Now what kind of reason is that to predict a film’s BO?

Last week of March sees many releases. “Khuda Ke Liye”, “The Great Indian Butterfly“, “Wednesday” and many more. Out of that, “Wednesday” stands out. It got a good star cast - Nasserudin Shah, Anupam Kher & Raj Pal Yadav. The genre of the film is thriller - it is about Mumbai police and terrorists, apparently. Perhaps the story will be cliched? But has potential? No?

I have covered Hindi films releasing in March month; it’s not that exciting, is it? What about regional films? I am not aware of it - anything exciting happening in other parts of Indian film industry - Any (non-hindi) films to look out for next month?

Yet another month with nothing to watch out for. Race looks horrible and the three bimbos (bimbettes?) are supposed to help carry it. I thought B and W was sort of interesting but who knows? After Sunday we have Wednesday - now look to see the other days of the week clamoring for equal time.
