Notes On A Scandal

(3/5) Powerful performances from Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett. Dench creates a superbly creepy portrait of isolation.

The film comes alive only because of Dench and Blanchett. Dench is not just manipulative but the manner in which she slowly entraps Blanchett by emotionally blackmailing her, ensuring that she is one who will do anything for her is just too creepy.

The other aspect was the way the story unfolds. It just took me by surprise. The clandestine affair had already begun before we even knew it. What the film focused on was how Judy slowly finds the weakness in Blanchett’s character and thus begins to exploit her - all for the fact that she was isolated and wanted someone into her world, at her command.
Terrifying portrayal. The first time I saw Judi Dench in an out and out negative role. Superb performance.

True. It is a very performance based film, and it works very well because of Dench and Blanchett’s excellent portrayals.
