OHH MY GOD- Don’t miss it

Bhagwan deta hai par Dubey nahi leta hai. When I saw the poster of this film that I didn’t know existed , that’s the line that caught me. I wanted to see it , and that’s the first film I chose to see amongst the four releases today. The film took me completely by surprise. I expected it to be all things funny and it was that and more. It is not a situational comedy, it is not just comedy , it is much more than that. It is complicated, it is many layered, it is a brilliant screenplay and I feel proud that someone put up the money for a film like this , in this country.
It is so unpredictable that when you are expecting it to make you laugh it takes you by your balls and twists it around. Then you think will it go into the Shallow Grave zone and it doesn’t. it takes you where you are not expecting it. It does not solves problems of Dubey, it sorts him out.
And Dubey, what a character created by it’s authors. A man who idolises Dhirubhai ambani, only film he chooses to take his wife to is Guru, he wants to be rich but does not want money he does not deserve. He constantly is having a dialogue with God, a god who wants to be rid of his monologues, a tired God, depressed God, who munches on chips and lolipops, always eating , obese god , who is always cursing himself for what he has created, a God brilliantly played by Saurabh Shukla. His best performance yet. The to and fro betwen God and Dubey is not just highly relevant it’s also entertainong.
A brilliant low budget attempt, the kind of film that heartens you and underlines the fact that our cinema is indeed changing. Apparently shot in 19 days. brilliant performances also by Divya dutta, Harsh Chhaya and Ghanshyam Garg. Do not let this film die, watch it . Must watch.
Initially when it began the background score bothered me, the sound design was nothing but dubbed dialogues and background and it kind of was irritating, but then things like that go away when the story takes over, issues that we at PFC crib about like production values and cinematography, does not apply here keeping the budget in which it was shot at, but I am still so bloody happy that someone made it here. Kudos to Vinay pathak for another tour-de-force performance and also Saurabh Shukla, and hats off to another Saurabh, the shrivastava, whereever he came from, to make this, his producers and writers. Watch it before Rab ne starts to kick every film out of the theatres, do not leave it for next week.
Tomo I will see Dil Kabaddi and monday Maharathi.. hope these films keep coming.

@Shekhar, this film’s poster hit me with the exact same thoughts. And what timing! I walked out of Dasvidaniya and I see a comedy with the same actors! Wasn’t I relieved at that. He he.
Even I told the same thing to my friends, ki dekho kitna sahi naam hai picture ka. Oh my god doesn’t work that good. Par sab chalta hai, picture achi ho to.
Poster is mostly comic, like those play posters. Saurabh Shukla in 5 get-ups around a hysterical Vinay. Watching it in few hours.
Frankly I didn’t expect it to come that early though.
This weekend is turning out to be quite historical indeed.

    Yesterday I saw MAHARATHI-New Empire,DIL KABADDI-Eros and OH MY GOD-Liberty back to back !!
OH MY GOD- I must admit I was just blown off by the sheer conviction of the Director to pull off this subject, I totally agree with you on the point that this movie got made, it is the sheer luck of the audience, everybody in the last show of Liberty were in SPLITS a necessary relief after the 60 hr movie terror mayhem on TV!! Let me also tell you if you have noticed the film has one of the best INTERVAL CUTTING POINT I have seen of Indian Cinema till date that shows that this director Saurabh Srivastava is really ahead of his times, kudos to his entire team, its a FANTASTIC first time effort !!!
Pl watch DIL KABADDI again a Indianised version of Woody Allen’s HUSBANDS AND WIVES, Irrfan Khan excels in every frame , one of his top comic performances till date !!
And MAHARATHI was a play and should have remained the same !!!

    Totally disappointing!
What was Sourabh Srivastava trying to convey?

Almost every dialogue was written twice ..a desperate attempt to convert a documentary into a feature film.
People, locations, drama all of it looked fake.

Dubey’s disillusion was painful (in a bad way) to watch …
I did end up watching the entire movie only because it felt like a private screening with just 4 of us in the theater

God! for those who believe, must know that God is smarter than that…

I find the title of “Oh my God!” not correct. Here my logic may seem a lttl bit odd. But when ever you search the name “oh my god” in Google you will never find anything about the movie in the first page cos it is a very common term. Instead they should give titles which are a lttl different.

I am just a common viewer. And this is my personal opinion.I would like to know the opinion of senior people here.

Thank you Anurag. I was actually NOT going to watch this movie after reading negative reviews about it. But after reading your review I decided to go for it and I am very happy that I chose to watch it.

It was a good narrative with an original story. I don’t see how it was similar to Bruce almighty except for the fact that there was a God in human form.

I agree that the sound design and the background score of the film was below average but as you rightly said a few minutes into the movie, it does not matter because the story kicks in.

I completely fell in love with the performances and the screenplay. The flow of the movie was very impressive and it conveys the story and the idea very well. The film also has a very interesting blend of drama and comedy, which makes it quite unpredictable. Also, the makers have blended an artistic flavour into the film very well. I just loved it !! Great work by Vinay Pathak and Saurabh Shukla.

Based on my internet search, it seems that this was not only the director’s debut but also of the writers. A job well done. Congratulations to the Director (Sourabh Shrivastava) and the Writers (Vipul Binjola, Asit Kaul, Manisha Ojha, Rishi Virmani). It was a fantastic low budget attempt.

Oh, My God affirms my belief that one cannot trust these review writers who try to be pseudo – intellectuals and ruin the film for the viewers.

Anurag, thanks again and would look forward to more from you.

thanks for the thumbsup Anurag. I caught the film back to back with a second viewing of lucky before it left cinemas right after the first week.
vinay pathak is good in this film – definitely better than dasvidanaya – though I liked that too, but Saurabh Shukla is just magnificent. I somehow feel he should have played the three Paresh Rawals in Oye Lucky. Fantastic actor – wish we could get to see more of him around.

The film though not in my top films for the year, really works very well for the budget, and doesn’t drag much given the very minimalistic context.

Highlight of the weekend was watching Hulla finally. WHOA, what an amazing film. BRILLIANT is the word that describes everything about the film – I’m sure if Jaideep will blow audiences away with his next film – the only mistake (for lack of a better word) he’s made is make a film about something not everyone can identify with and will find the protoganist over-reacting after the first half an hour. I could have sat through another hour of the film, I found it so well made. The jokes are actually funny, the perfomances fantastic, and the story totally believable -at least personally for me, as I myself of an almost insomniac, and a very light sleeper. I could identify with everything Sushant goes through and hence does, and actually found the film getting better with every passing minute.
Kudos! If he choses to make something that won’t need such a niche audience I can wager anything his next film is gonna be way more appreciated and mindblowing.

Also saw Black Friday finally on dvd the last weekend – fantastic. But I guess everything that needed to be said’s been said over the years.
