OLLO Music : Much beyond your average Jugni’s and Billo’s (with streaming teasers)

There are so many reference points for ‘Punjabi’ in films. You tend to go about it stereotypically. Dhaba. Butter Chicken. Lassi. Aloo da paratha. Truck drivers. Jalandhar. Patiala. Phagwada. And so on.

The question is, what defines it? The culture, the language, the mannerisms, the way of life… and the music and dance that finds itself in an exhortation of life. We have seen umpteen films on Punjabi culture, mostly taking Punjabi as a fallback and moving on with whatever story they got, with a modest dose of naach-gaana, bhangra et al. sometimes the film goes awry and the director thinks ‘Punjabi!’ and lo and behold you get yourself a dhamaka item number. Universally acceptable oft-pointless song and dance. Oye balle oye. Bhangra paao ji paaji, giddha paao ni kudiyon.

Let’s take the discussion further. Punjabi pop. Daler Mehndi. Malkit Singh. London Brigade. You think of the words Billo, Jugni, Preeto, Ishq, Pind, Hass ho gaya, Chak de phattey etc. it is almost impossible to sum up the Punjabi contribution to the pop scene in our country, yet it is almost ironical that the best music is still unheard. I love the way Daler paaji sings sufi, the way he immerses himself the moment he touches a Mirza or a Khusro, and it pains me to see and hear him do trash. It’s almost a decade of trash now. Paaji sings in hindi to keep it simple. Malkit Singh. Sukhwinder Singh. Harbhajan Mann. Gurdas Mann. Sukhbir. Mika. Almost a 50 more odd singers have been around on the pop scene singing songs after songs worth very little authentic pleasures. Adulterated lyrics, polluted compositions, populist production, music videos, and the Punjabi flavor almost dies in the pop scene. Very few attempts now. Even Daler paaji has given up now. No further die hard attempts at catch phrases that should catch but don’t. All we get now is an odd album or two in an year. Then the regular desi market. Some assembly line production. Just check this list of albums and artists and you will know what I am talking about. It sounds like there are more music albums being produced in Punjab than kheton mein ganna(sugarcane). Then the Canadda-Southhall gangs. Supercool by default. Bally Sagoo(I have heard him the most, for obvious reasons, this guy does not know any limits, he just keeps moving from one genre to the other, masterfully at that, more on him some other day). Sukhshinder Shinda(love this guy’s heavy beat-induced and electronic-bhangra stuff). Jazzy B, LL Cool Singh(!). Mehsopuria(the singing sensation with a golden tooth). Stereo Nation, Apache Indian(Steven Kapoor ji moved from Arrange Marriage to Chok-there to Boom shakalak to No Problem to Reggae(Karma) to very few productions off late). You name it. Think of a Punjabi pop artist name and I assure you it will exist for real.

Well that’s that for the background. Why am I suddenly all Punjabi pop this weekend morning? The reason is Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. I heard the songs and they kept going in a loop, and had me going back to buying some Punjabi music and going online and searching for some more streaming sites to quench this desire for authentic Punjabi music. The mall scene is almost disheartening, as I have said on multiple occasions. Find yourself lucky if you find any good music in these malls. I for one have met with disappointment 9 times out of 10. My only decent achievement was this Bally Sagoo CD titled On Screen. Some good old authentic stuff mixed good old BS style.
Coming to OLLO, the CD cover/layout is almost disappointing. It baffles me why it should be meted out such a dismal packaging. I was eager to read the lyrics and had expected at least some space given to all the artists and musicians who have put the album together. But it was quite sad to see the ‘one pack fits all’ boxed CD.
Anyways, the music stays cool nonetheless. Sneha Khanwalkar creates a fresh line up of desi tracks, the kinds rarely heard lately. More so, all that in a film OST is all the more rare and unexplored a terrain.

The film will be talked about more and more as we go into November, thanks to that infectious classic called Khosla ka Ghosla, Dibakar Bannerjee won’t go out of flavor for at least a handful of years. Film to baad mein dekhenge, and I am sure it will not disappoint, given the vast talent that was on display in Khosla, and now the music of Oye Lucky are reasons enough.

So the music rocks, quite officially. It has been a few days for me to reach that conclusion. I heard it first and it kinda got my attention, but I thought what’s new, so does every other Punjabi score. Then I kind of moved on, and went back to the songs, and I discovered few more layers that helped me take the album home, and I grew to liking the sometimes fun sometimes disturbing lines. Only grudge is there are so many sounds heard in the album that it could easily do with few more songs. That would really make it a standout OST of the year.

Jugni

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Jugni takes you to an local orchestra party, only if it was being done by FTV at a posh lounge instead of a Phagwada joint. And that’s the beats and the brilliant arrangement to thank there. An exciting voice, an addictive groove(aa-ja, aa-ja, something which made me think of Narendra Chanchal ji swaying his hands the way he does, also Des Raj sounds quite like Chanchal ji, not to mention the hilarious do of Paresh Rawal in the promos takes the imagination only further), full-on wicked treatment with drums, basslines, guitar-shitars and the works. The lyrics(Dibakar, Amitosh Nagpal) are cracker too.
It is essentially a full blown-out folk act based on a solid bass backing.
This is the stuff of post-midnight wild night outs, without a legal driving license, of course.
Jugni aa jaa aa jaa haath na aoundiye

Jugni karti jeenu pyaar
Laun di paar Jugni kehndi ae
Main chhad ya ae ghar baar
Phir bhi naal na saade aoundi ae

Mainu jhooth bolke jaoundi ae
Bhai jhootha mainu banaoundi ae

Mainu saari raat jagaun di ae
Sapne bade dikhaun di ae

Jugni au ke sau ke khel rachaun di ae

A fun tease track, a template very religiously followed in this genre, its either male bashing(mostly backed by ritual singing) or female banging(bewafa chhad gayi mainu,. Or even our very own Jugni).

Mere naal mera parchhavaan
Das main kis nu
Haal sunaava
Das main jaavaan keeve kol
Tere mithe mithe bol oye.

I am not saying that this is a Jugni that you have never heard before. You must have heard the brilliant Rabbi interpretation of Jugni(veer mere aye Jugni) or many other Jugni’s. Just that this is quite a new version which we haven’t heard before and it does wonders, more so because of the treatment, the heavy dance floor arrangement, and obviously the fluent singing.

And then of course, after all the cool things, there is that line you just cant miss…

Jugni tap tap tap tap khoon bahaun di ae

That’s it. I mean there is no more reason left to not like the song.

Check out the guitars that accompany the emphasis on this line and the track never looks back from there.

Jugni haan na haan na kuchh na kehndi hai

I love the track more and more each day, and it surprisingly doesn’t ebb in its effect.
May be it’s the whole crime feel…..

Tu Raja ki Raj Dulari

Rajbir – performed by Master Mahaveer Chopra & Party
Lyrics – Mange Lal

Now this has to be some track! An ektara opens a what sounds like a lone traveler’s soliloquy, you hear a rustic voice, like those you would have heard while traveling on trains, or when your car broke down on the highway and you heard an unintentional song flowing somewhere in the air. This is where Raj Dulari begins to take over your thoughts, and soon it arrests you in its self-convinced structure.
The mukhda goes on and on and on and on until you can’t get it on your head and start singing along. Very bassy, the overall feel is dark. The vocals are mind boggling. And you wonder why no one attempted it before. Be prepared for weird reactions when you play this song out loud though. I have had them. And some hilarious at that. But skip all that and get to the track, and you will walk out singing tu raja ki…

In term of lyrics, it is a traditional rich heroine poor street singer hero theme, covered in folklores in wide spectrums.

Lyrics(Courtesy : Gaurav)

Tu raajja ki rajdulari… main sirf langotte aala sun,
bhaang ragad ke piya karun main kundi sotte aala sun.
Tu rajja ki chhori sai, mhare ek bhi dasi das nahi,
Shawl dushalle odhan aali, mhare kambal tak bhi paas nahi,
Tu bagga ki koyal sai, yadde barf pade hari ghaas nahi,
Kis tariya jee laagge tera, shatranj, chopad, taash nahi,
Kisi sahukaar sai bhyah karwa lai….
Sahukaar sai bhyah karwa lai, main khalis totte aala sun,
bhaang ragad ke piya karun main kundi sotte aala sun,

Tu rajja ki rajdulari… main sirf langotte aala sun,
bhaang ragad ke piya karun main kundi sotte aala sun.
Tane julfan aala chhora chahiye….
Julfan wala chhora chahiye, main laambe chotte aala sun,
bhaang ragad ke piya karun main kundi sotte aala sun,

Tu rajja ki chhori sai, mhare ek bhi dasi das nahi,
bhaang ragad ke piya karun main kundi sotte aala sun.

This is a haryanvi folk song… in fact a ragni. The context is the argument given by Lord Shiva to Parvati, who was desperate to marry him. Lord Shiva has been quoted as describing her the way he lives.

It’s surely a track that’s bound to incite weird reactions when you play it. I was playing it loud all these days and never did a day go when I didn’t hear someone say have you lost your mind, wtf is this. And I quietly smiled, because there is nothing else you can do. Yes, it is a weird track, but it is a super-fundu track as well nonetheless. And to include such a song in a film OST like OLLO is a no less achievement for the people behind it. If people embrace this pattern, it automatically paves the way for many new opportunities, a platform opens for many a unheard of singers hidden in the vast canvas of Punjab.
The track took me to Bally Sagoo’s albums, and I spent quite some time revisiting all his greats. Preeto de ghar da bhabhi kunda khadka baitha, nachan di haami, and so on.
You will either love or hate this track. I wonder how its been used in the film. Should be fun checking that out.

Superchor

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Now this is what I am talking about! Think a quintessential Jugni track, put in a gutar-gu-gutar-gu backing, and a voice that resembles the verve of a Hans Raj Hans and Shankar Mahadevan, pull in a typical dhol beat and you got yourself Superchor. But why Superchor, and where? For this you need to get to the kick-ass Punju rap by Akshay Verma. You will know why its Superchor. My favorite track from the album. Lots of reasons, the whole chori-karo-is-cool feeling, obviously the rap and the infectious lead singing(Dilbahar) and the multiple levels the song touches. This should serve as a running motif through Lucky-ji’s histrionics on screen.
Its funny how I never get the lyrics in this song, yet I can’t stop myself from singing them every hour, Jugni chhad di si kaar..…..
And then kothi sector chaar. Its way too addictive to keep inhibitions in the way.

Fun thing is the song never stops at one attempt. After excelling at a good enough start, it goes and explores different terrains, and has great amount of fun while it does that, and makes sure you have it too.

The rap cant be described in words, it covers everything remotely related to ‘attitude’ from gabru je Punjab de to downtown di galiyaan to butter chicken diyaan botiyaan to superchor.

Jugni kehndi English bol
Hello how you do you bol

This is one hell of a line. Hear it, and hear it again. The way it’s sung, the way Dilbahar’s vocals follow the rap and never leave you feeling unsatisfied.

I love the way the cooler rap establishes the character of Lucky as a happy go-well-lucky chor, much like a Bunty or a Johnny. This is the cool chor, superchor, and a cool song never hurts if you head out to make a film revolving around a chor.

Oye lucky kuch te leke aa
Teri style lovely, teri smile lovely…
Teri life lovely
Johnny Walker walking walking
Old monk is talking talking

Hooriyaan

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The fundu dance track, Hooriyaan is another full-on party.
Aansoo na bahaa ye moti na luta, is done mostly on traditional percussion after which the track gets to its beat-enriched, very bassy punch of Hooriyaan.
Great female vocals add a variety to the predominantly male album.
Call it the festive vibe, call it a great track, but Hooriyaan is surely ruling right now, my mind, if not anywhere else. The whole Bunty aur Babli feel to the way a duet is used to establish a fun backdrop of a con-plot to be played out is quite cool, and infectious at that.

First you think it’s Heeriyaan, then its Hooriyaan, then it doesn’t matter.
I love the way the track stands alone and works its way up your playlist, with no allusions whatsoever to a conventional beat or folk tune, the arrangement doesn’t leave anything for imagination; you got all you could possibly think of – traditional rhythm, and a very modern beat base.

Main ki karna is looped to create a sense of moving forward, and that where the track ends, continuing the mystery it kicked off in the beginning.

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye

Oye welcome hai ji apna hi garage hai

The one thing that catches you at first in this title track is the typical Dilli flavored one liners, like the garage one. This was something seen in the KKG title song too, but I guess those were all film lines(don’t worry I am not gonna kiss you, chiraunji lal, ye aapka naam hai, I am happy you are happy take your happiness out etc.).
This one is quite different, so to say, done tastefully by Mika who seems to be enjoying the fun lyrics by Dibakar, Manu Rishi & Kanu Behl. The mood is friendly fun and bhangra, a recipe that seldom goes wrong.

O truckkaan waala geet hai jee

Tunak tunak truck jalandhar engine piston becha oye

Kharcha control kar tax bhi dena hai

Tu hi collector tu hi commissioner phir bhi salaakhaan andar oye

The song more or less resonates with the film’s theme –
Kamao toh zero, churao toh hero.

Love the ABCD chaida mainu bit. And that is pretty much one of the many reasons I call it different.

Lucky jeda hai apna munda, single hai ki bachelor!

This is the better of the two mixes. Jugni is a nice track to mix, because you get punches like Jugni tap tap tap… and haan na haan na.

Go grab your copy and join the ride.

Excellent! I am going to get a copy of OLLO. You are right about having lyrics…it is a boon for non-punjus like me. I thoroughly enjoyed Rabbi’s Avengi Ja Nahin purely because it had lyrics with English translation…in fact, now I can even sing along. Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I waited for a movie so eagerly :)

I was just telling my friend the other day how sad it is that the general impression people have of Punjabi music is that of ‘get up and dance’…in fact if I had a grain of makki for every time I have heard someone say, ‘There is just something about Punjabi music that makes your feet move’, I would be eating a makki di roti right now.

    It’s sad not because it’s untrue…Punjabi music can make a mountain dance…

But that impression of Punjabi music overshadows what I consider the language with one of the richest heritage of poetry…with equal quantity humour, irony, philosophy and awareness…

Ishar Singh, Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, Sultan Bahu, Mian Baksh, Bhai Vir Singh, Avtar Singh Pash…and many many more…

and still a majority of Indians and Pakistanis think Punjabi music is only bhangra and kidda…

and this hardly had anything to do with the topic on hand…I have not heard the tracks from OLLO yet…sorry, just felt like a little rant.

@Kanda poha, I hear you. Your rant is very pertinent and I thought of the same things when I wrote the initial few bits of the article. Punjabi truly goes much beyond in poetry, literature, and art as a whole entity. I have got a very rudimentary knowledge of Punjabi poets, thanks to some Sufi music and some Rabbi songs. Do feel free to share more of your insights with us.

    @Tushar
As a passionate follower of punjabi music, let me congratulate for putting up a thoroughly complete review.
Swaad aa geya padh ke. ;)

This is one album that has dared to be ‘theth’ in lingo as well as accent. From whatever I’ve gathered from the trailers, the music looks completely in sync with the ‘mahaul’ of the movie. Can’t wait for the movie to be released.

    1) Oye Lucky Lucky Oye
Great choice of lyrics to present Lucky, the protagonist of the story in a subtle way.
“ABCD chahida mainu… DVD vi chahida mainu.. LCD vi chahida mainu.. laal mercery [Mercedes ;) ] chahidi mainu. Laal kilaa vi chahida mainu”

    Sums it up for me.

    2) Jugni
Inspired by the Arif Lohar version of Jugni (music by Mukhtar Sahota), this song draws some tense and pacy picutres for the movie. Perfect!

    3) Tu Raja Ki
What a track! Fabulous music production fusing the folk Rajasthani elements with a slow dark bassy tune.
Tushar! bang on target with the Bally Sagoo analogy ;)

    4) Superchor
It would have been so easy to make a mess of this very important track but hats off to the Sneha Khanwalkar and Dilbahar for choosing the perfect mahaul for this song. Best track of the album.

Pace up, pace down, rap, Dhol, Jugni all fused in 4 mins 45 second… Its brilliant!!

    5) Hooriyan
    Track for the dance-floors.
My guess is… that it will be used later in the second half of the movie.

Overall, one of the best soundtracks this year!

Dibakar sure knows his stuff damn well, all elements of the album are well-researched! Khosla rocked and this looks like an absolute treat.

    @Kanda Poha
Couldn’t have agreed with you more. Koi vi punjabi channel laa lao and all you’d hear is “Petrol”, “Paperaan’ch Fail” and the obvious “Nach Lai”

But I guess things are improving slowly but surely. One can hear more n more people appreciating the works of Bulle Shah, Amrita Pritam, Debi Maksoospuri, Dev Thareekewala, Surjit Patar. :)

Thanks for pointing out the lyrics. I used to think why is pappu(for lack of info) saying LCDV. Now I know the drift. Laal mercery…he he.
I wish Dibakar shares his insights with us someday, as to what research went in, cus I am sure this isn’t a mere month’s work in the studio.

Very well done… kudos to dibakar, sneha, and all the singers, composers and artists…

Even the movie is very artfully done and seems as authentic as the music. ( Abhay Deol playing his very own guy next door act) And all the Delhi accents and terms and the “muh mein raam, bagal mein chhuri” people…

    @Gaurav
I would so love to have the Hindi/ English translation of this song and if possible of other songs as well…

    Thanks a ton

best soundtrack i’ve heard in hindi films in ages. i bought this cd post seeing the film and can’t get the cd outta my car. jugani and superchor are brilliant. i went back to see the film again just to see the brilliance of the soundtrack and sound design – the way the various versions and parts of the songs are used in the film – it’s genius.

heard dev.d soundtrack today, and i think these are two of the best soundtracks of the decade in hindi films. i really hope oye lucky had more songs, but the remix treatments are really original, a big thumbs up!

Couldn’t agree with you more on the impact of punjabi on indi-pop. I, like many others, am a punjabi guy from delhi who can’t speak the language! but punjabi music strikes a deep chord and makes me want to learn more about the language that our forefathers spoke..chak de!
