Finally an opportunity has come to read/know about the life of one of the finest actors of the world, Mr. Om Puri. His wife, Mrs Nandita Puri has written the Biography, Unlike Hero – Om Puri ( Published by Roli Books).
According to CNN-IBN Om Puri Saab says,”My favourite part of the book is my childhood. It will be a very inspiring chapter and also I consider that it is not only my story, it is the story of millions of Indians; particularly millions of children who are living a very difficult life, who are struggling in life, who lived under deprivation and lot of them can’t make it and their story nobody will hear. But here is a celebrity whose story will be heard.
This book is about my extraordinary childhood, my beginnings. I was a rag picker at the age of seven, I was in a tea shop at 7 am when I was washing tea glasses and that entire journey from ninth standard. I was on my own staying alone, giving tuition and going to school, cooking by myself, washing my clothes. I did my class 10th, then I went to college and did odd jobs. I was with a lawyer working as a peon, I was working as a lab assistant in the same college where I was studying and I was a clerk in a government office. How I managed to go to the NSD (National School of Drama) and how did I manage to go to the FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) in Pune and after that how did I manage to establish myself in Bombay. Today, I am known as a versatile actor not only in India but also abroad
“.

Most probably Mr. Amitabh Bachchan will release the book sometime in early December.

Media has already created controversies by raising the issues related to the various women came into the life of the actor.

Nice to know more on Om Puri, this actually makes me wonder…I guess someone needs to do a similar synopsis on Prahlad Kakkar… though I think I can put some points up, but still it will be good if somebody who knows him better or worked with him puts it up…. the man who was kicked out by his dad, sold tea, roadside food catering, managing a canteen in Prithvi theater by literally asking Sanjana Kapoor, to making 3 porn movies and then hit the Ad world big time, this man is almost one of the reasons for all the ‘youngistan’ hoopla… his way of making ads, took people like SRK Indian Cricket team (sachin azhar jadeja everybody) AB to a different level of enthu altogether… this man sure paved way for a lot of things in the changing Indian media look… from the D’Cunha trademark of advertising to Kakkar Style of making, there was a huge shift… each of them actually defining the era that the society living in…

What a life! In spite of his difficult upbringing, he didnt aspire to make it to the mainstream cinema for a majority of his life. Lived for meaningful cinema! He ventured into mainstream only into the later part of his life. A slumdog debonaire!

I differ here Vinay when you say he didn’t aspire to make it to the mainstream cinema.

My point is every single artist in universe starts out to break in the profitable and commercial league. Then happens three things.
      1. A few succeeds and happily joins the league, throwing the thought of meaningful cinema into dustbin.
      2. A few fail and do an honest analysis of their whole situation and finds they are best suited for particular kindda role or cinema and this self-realization makes them wonderful actor/artist in that domain.
      3. Rest keep on trying.

      my 2 cents

Om Puri was never a hero material as far as commercial hindi cinema is considered. Naseer saab on the other hand got to work as solo hero in movies. In parallel cinema Naseer mostly worked with Shyam Benegal while Om saab worked with Govind Nihalani.

Most of these films (late 70s and early 80s) had both of them.
NS got some middle-path movies also like Katha and Masoom which did not come to OP but then NS does not have an Ardha Satya to his credit where a film coming from parallel cinema got a super success at BO also. Though he was also an important part of it but OP was the hero.
Ardha Satya should be the biggest hit coming from the Parallel cinema movement.

Om Puri Saab and Naseer Saab, both joined mainstream hindi cinema after mid 80s. OP did every kind of film without complaining while NS got a periodic disĂllusionment from films of every category.
Parallel cinema, though brought them a different stardom (and to Shabana and Smita too) and presented them in very interesting and lengthy roles while mainstream cinema mostly used them as character actors and mainstream filmmakers used them to increase the reputation of acting department in their films.

Barkha Dutt asked the questions personal to Om Puri as if the whole book is about Om Puri’s sexual escapades. Om has already accused his wife of sensationalizing the whole matter. Here Barkha is also doing the same.

My thoughts exactly… she could’ve touched upon the subject, but instead she chose to make that issue the single point of focus.
