One Scene Character

It is time to do a list. This time, I present to you The Top 10 One Scene Characters. Not really. Just a few of my favorite One Scene Hindi Film characters, that have sorta stuck in me mind. I was meant to write on this a very long time ago. But, you know, how it is. Anyway, a few weeks back I read RK’s article on Naseeruddin Shah’s 3.5 scene in Ardh Satya and that kinda prompt me to finally write about my favorite one scene characters; I just want to highlight those great actors.

In most of the films - those small characters/one scene characters are the most memorable/entertaining scenes. And I am going to start with RajPal Yadav because he has made a successful career out of playing one scene/small characters.

RajPal Yadav has done plenty of films with Ram Gopal Verma and in most of those films he has had less than 3 scenes to do. Be it Mast, Jungle, Road, or Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. He was great in all those films. In Jungle, RajPal Yadav as the crazy Sippa, was just pure class. But, his one scene character of Bhai in Kal Ho Na Ho, is just classic. I never thought I would say something like that about Kal Ho Na Ho. That is the only scene which I can watch in Kal Ho Na Ho. But people have Kanta Ben in their mind - she also had only a couple of scenes in the movie. Kanta ben was a crude joke in the film which was stretched in the Filmfare awards, so people remember it. Also his sly character in Haasil. RajPal Yadav has never shun these kind of one scene offers. And in most cases he has accepted right one scene offers. Through this he has done three featured films as a leading hero. That’s not bad, eh?

Snehal Dhabi. He is another actor who has done many one scene characters in his career. But, he has not been as successful as RajPal Yadav. Nevertheless he is a talented actor. Like RajPal Yadav, he got to play one scene/small characters in many Ram Gopal Verma movies. For example, playing Ram Gopal Verma/Rickshawallah in Mast. He only had three scenes in that movie. But those scenes were hilarious. Then, he played Aaj Kapoor in Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karego. Now who could forget those scenes of his with Johnny Lever. However, the best of his one scene character, is that guy from Hera Pheri. He thought Asrani was a Dalaal. Why did Priyadarshan had Snehal to play that character when he could have got anyone from his team to play that role? Is it cos he needed an actor to get it right as that scene was one of the funny scene of the film?

Shaurabh Shukla. Another favorite of Ram Gopal Verma. Or he used to be. I don’t know. But, he is still one of my favorite actor. He always gives a top class performance. I don’t think he has done that many one scene characters in his career. But one I can think of is, his Bihari Police role in Hazaron Khawisie Aisi. He only had a scene or two scenes in that film. And those scenes were hard hitting that you would not leave out that scene whenever discussing the film. Again, why was Shaurabh Shukla selected for that role? Some say quality actors are wasted in these kind of small roles, but I kinda disagree. You need quality actors for these kind of scenes. It has to be perfect. Koi Bhi Nahi Karsakta. Star bun sakte hai magar actors nahin…

Apna D Santosh also has done a few One Scene Characters, like that Agent in Iqbal or Bandwallah in Aahista Aahista. In Aahista Aahista, it was more than One Scene. In fact, his role was of best friend of Abhay Deol.

Now to my favorite One Scene Character. And that is Onbir! Did someone cry, who?! I don’t believe it. Don’t you know who Onbir is? He was in Khosla Ka Ghosla. Does that remind you? No? He was the chaukidaar - thrashing Ranvir and Anupam Kher. That dialect and the way that scene was shot.. was just birlliant. In my opinion, that is the best one scene hindi film character ever! Are there any better than that scene which I haven’t come across yet?

Amitabh Bachchan in Jalwa: standing behind Satish Kaushik who is bragging how he and AB used to play cricket during their chaddi (childhood) days

Akash Khurana in Falak: Ok technically he had 3 scenes, but I’ve mentioned it here cause that was the shortest possible time to create the most impact in a movie.

D Santosh in RGV ki Aag: that’s the only time we smiled in the entire movie, seeing someone we knew on PFC.

Rishi Kapoor in Biwi O Biwi: it was funny when I first saw it in the late 70s. Rishi in the Akbar Ellahabadi getup walks out of his apartment only to be pushed in by Rajendra Nath who trying to play catchup with the elevator.

TP Jain in Angoor: 2.5 scenes. But he provides the premise for the comedy angle when he keeps repeating “Bara bajne wale hain… mere paise” (Hinglish: it’s about to strike 12… my money)

    gosh… so many more…

Piyush Mishra in Dil Se… that is how I first knew who he was… before Maqbool, before Aaja Nachle… in fact, me and bro, used to point out the guy as Dil Se guy… just in case you dont remember, he was the main CBI interrogator guy…
Loved the (supercool) way he says the dialouge: “This was just a…… routine investigation…… jaisa aap log karte hai naa…” and so on…

Off-the-cuff, I remember a couple of favorites that are from the same movie that, incidentally, oz in above comment has mentioned too - Angoor. The characters:

    1) mastaanaa - The caretaker guy in the “aamo.n kaa baagaan”. Remember the dialogue “Khataraa kahaa.N nahii.n hai huzuur”? Just thinking of him, his expressions, his accent and the way he delivered those dialogues brings a smile on my face. The way I remember it, it has to be my favorite one-scene role.
    2) Hotel Manager/Clerk - Who when asked “thaanaa kidhar hai”, replies very matter-of-factly “pahale to aap baahar jaaiye”.

Both of these are excellent examples of the impact that a well-enacted role can make, however small it is.

I also like characters played by Yunus Parvez, TP Jain, and Ram Mohan (the Taxi driver) in Angoor, but IMO all these are more than just one-scene roles.

But there should be so many other such roles/characters…

Om Puri in Hera Pheri (more than one scene but what great scenes man)

The man who stands with Paresh Rawal in the Sandas queue in Aan - Men at Work

    @ DCH

Subodh character - Sonali Kulkarni’s boyfriend. Though his character is not one which is supposed to be funny, he is made to be funny… Esp the car scene where Saif Asks him “Suodh Tumhe time yaad nahi hai”?

    @Abhilash

True… At one time almost all malayalam films had more than one characters like this. Just would appear for a scene and it would be one of the best scenes in the film…

  23. Arthi V on July 8th, 2008 4:53 am

Yup…The guy is the art diretor for the film. He’s Teddy Maurya. I’ve also read that this guy was also one of the singers for the film ‘Mein Madhuri Dixit ….Hoon’. Not sure @ if its true though.

although johhny lever might have done quite a few 1-2 scene roles..
his role as daler mehendi in anari no.1 was hilarious playing along with razzaq khan as the kidnapper..

  28. prativindhya on July 8th, 2008 8:16 am

  29. Pavan Jha on July 8th, 2008 11:28 am

For strictly one scene performances, the two I remember on hand:

    1. Juhi in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na : What better happy ending you can expect..

    2. Amitabh Bachchan in Hero Hiralal and Ramji Londonwaley.. Pleasent Surprises

Some blink and you miss appearances:
    3. Sanjeev Kumar in Kala Patthar
    4. Dharmendra in Andha Kanoon
    5. Kishore Kumar in Bombay to Goa

    Two shots:
Johnny Walker in Anand : Brilliant
    Jagdeep in Sholay : Unforgettable!

  30. Honhaar Goonda on July 8th, 2008 12:15 pm

rbehemoth, that was Fatka - just saw the movie the other day; I was going to include him in the post, but he had more than one scene in the film. but nevertheless, he was good in those scenes. and Raj Pal Yadav? in Shool? I don’t remember it.. erm..

Deepak.. that look on Sardar’s face - just priceless!

Magik, it was Neeraj Vora - Phir Hera Pheri director - who played that KJ character, i think.

palle, yeah, Johnny lever would have done many one scene characters but could not think of any good ones, so I guess there weren’t any good ones…

Also the Pehlvan guys in Khosla Ka Ghosla.. just had a scene.. and the guru was just hilarious.

  31. satya on July 8th, 2008 12:25 pm

  35. K J on July 9th, 2008 1:25 am

did anyone check out annu kapoor’s one scene act in raincoat? has to be one of the best one act scenes in contemporary indian movies.

  36. Jayesh Kishanchandani on July 9th, 2008 2:53 am

Om Puri in Gandhi… ” Eat this…” (If you can include it ). No other one scene actor has had a greater impact.
I guess it has to do a lot with the timing of the scene, the actor, the editor and the director.

  37. Ankur Garg on July 9th, 2008 10:35 am

I believe only those One scene characters are worth remembering which had some relevance in story or through which story has reached its destination.
Just by gouing this definition two characters that immediately come to my mind are:

Anu Kapoor from Ghayal-how marvellously it was weaved into script that u never question its existence and subsequently it disappearence.:”Main Janta hoon tum jeetoge tum boxer ho,Ashok ne bataya tha”.

Sushant Singh from Darna Marna hai - He was only in climax but what a build up man u know through out the movie that there is somebody and hence added the puunch into the character and movie.

Just remembering inconsequential characters for the sake of it or characters with total irrelevance in a main plot of the story are more for academic purpose than the characters strength.

Also i think some characters remains present through out many frames in a movie but in reality they have only dialouge and if lucky a full scene to show case their talent, they should also be considered in this list.one that come to my mind is:

Sunil grover in The legend of bhagat singh:”ghost of kicks does not understand words”

  38. vineeth on July 9th, 2008 11:19 am

sushant singh from satya…. his one scene was stunning..the cow shed scene

and brahmanandam from telugu movie Kshana Kshanam .

  39. Dipankar Giri on July 9th, 2008 11:56 am

@ K J …yess…Annu kapoor is terrific..i somehow feels for him what an actor he is..just wasted..

  40. Shyaam Nagarajan on July 10th, 2008 2:20 am

Speaking about Annu Kapoor, his role as the newspaper editor in Mr. India. The scenes where he keeps getting wrong numbers and the scene where he meets Mr. India in his cabin is good. Speaking of Mr. India.,the the chap who comes to steal the Hanuman Murthi.. The scene where Murthi starts to hit everyone and how Mr. India tells him to say ‘Jai Bhajranga bali’. And the Teja and Daga scenes with Ms Hawa Hawai.

  41. Anand on July 11th, 2008 7:42 am

    Neeraj Vora in Satya
Restaurant waiter in Rangeela (AC Chalu hai sir!!)

Kamal Hassan made a film called Ladies Tailor. Unfortunately it is lying in the cans. He played a cameo as a corpse. I always wanted to check out that. In the Tamil original Nagesh played it hilariously.(who can forget satish shah in Jaane bhi..!!)
