Aaj gar main zad pe hoon to koi khusguman kyun ho..

One time Superstars

Ramu Ramgopal varma claim to fame : films like Satya, Shiva, Rangeela, Company, Jungle, Bhoot, Sarkar Ram gopal varma made mark with films depicting the mumbai underworld with its gang wars, the glamour associated and not to speak of its dark underbelly. A promising directorial debut Shiva (1989) sparked expectations and films on subject continued to be made.. we can say a “trend” making films on crime was set. close reality check on victimization of student politics, shiva emerged winner. It focused the grey prevailing in college campuses. Film underlined Right needs Power to deal. Crime, underworld, psychological thrillers, horror have always remained Ram Gopal Varma’s way.

RGV is a banner now. With nearly two decades of movie world experience, Ramu could have been worth more what he is today. Overconfidence and attitude has done the damage.

Rangeela With a strong and commendable cast likes Aamir, Urmila and Jackie shroff and music by Rahman made “rangeela” a musical genius and there was no looking back for the fearless visionary. His Satya, Company and D, the Indian gangster trilogies are so realistically made that they are often seen as cinematic reference-point to crime and underworld. He would be long remembered for his unusual and first of its kind take on Crime. However, nowadays seems to completely lost his golden touch as films like Go, Darling, Aag, Contract suggest, these and others faded very quickly.last seen : His latest offering Agyaat is not up to mark and lags behind from earlier Ram gopal varma ventures, the golden Ramgopal varma touch is missing…Come on RGV!

sanuKumar Sanu (singer) : Kumar Sanu would be long revisited for melodious songs of an era bygone. Passing of legendary Kishore Kumar as we all know had created sense of talent hunt to repay the space, arrival of Singers like Kumar Sanu and Udit narayan matched the expectations to a good level. Sanu showed commitment and loyalty to the profession. Listener friendly Sanu stormed into the bollywood fame with Aashiqui and soon became a regular voice to many leading stars. His velvety voice is still a treat to listen. Numbers like…tu aashiqui hai, mera dil bhi kitna pagal, jab kisi ki traf nazar jhukne lage, kuch na kaho, Ek ladki ko dekha, dil hai ki maanta nahin and many chartbusters are testimonial to the experience. He is not regular in Hindi film industry now unlike his counterpart Udit narayan and is doing Bhojpuri songs. His voice is missing from Hindi films. It is perhaps days for fresh stars. Kumar sanu is talented singer and is capable of making comebacks. Give him space , he is all the way sanu…Teri chunariyaaaa!

spS.P Balasubramanium (singer): S P would be long remembered as former Salman khan playback voice, singer has sung some of his best songs for Salman khan . In the lines of Udit narayan for Aamir khan SP was for salman khan.He was also voice to superstar Kamal Hassan. Earlier to singer becoming synonym for Salman khan, SP became known as playback voice to kamal Hassan ek duje ke liye is a remarkable example.

Films like Ek dujeke liye, Tohfa, Himmatwala, Maine pyar kiya, Patthar ke Phool, Roja,Bombay, Hum hain aapke kaun, Saajan and many others best describe the talent of singer. Balasubramanium a recipient of “Sivaji Award” is now busy with south Indian film circles and is a recognized voice. S P Balasubramanium has bagged the filmfare award for “Best playback singer” category 2006, award was given for the song ‘Adagadigo Bhadragri ‘ from the telugu film ‘Sri ramadasu. SP is a more popular entity in south film circles.

SPB’s multi-language concert 2009 at Palghat suggests revival, hope the singer sings for Hindi films someday again Yeh hasin wadiyaan yeh khula aasmaan

arwind1 Arvind swami (actor) Claim to fame: He is perfect candidate to figure in the given ode. One time eye candy to Mani Ratnam Arwind swami is nowhere in film circles. Swami is not a regular face. Audiences have not seen the actor on the big screen for long. Currently doing something good for the society and social services, arvind swami is not ready for a comeback… Audiences certainly miss the Roja and Bombay star. He was last seen as a chief guest at a school function.

11 Anu Agrawal (actress) runaway debut success Aashiqui opposite Rahul Roy, the dusky queen earned fame with her very first film. Post a successful debut a string of bad selection of unfair roles occurred. Anu agrawal never achieved “Aashiqui”form again. As it is largely seen fading “Hindi” options guide one to small screen and south Indian movie world; Anu opted south films. Post 1996 the actress focuses there only. The return of jewel thief way back in mid 90’s stand as anu agrawal’s last Hindi movie. For “unlucky actress” things never seemed settled, Anu met an accident…sustained injuries. Her promising cinematic run met a shocking end. Anu is out of trauma and is running a yoga school.

minakshi Meenakshi Sheshadri (actress) claim to fame : Subhash ghai’s Hero opposite Jackie shroff placed her into instant stardom. Musical hit “Hero” acted as ideal launching pad for the fresher . Meenakshi never opted for stereotypical easy going rather always looked for competitive roles. Critically acclaimed performance in Damini opposite sunny deol showcased the potential in her. The “Damini” character gave her awards, She is a suitable candidate as One time Superstar. One of the most educated actresses of her time, her pairing with co-star Sunny Deol was quite good . Meenakshi sheshadri complimented the performances of Sunny in most of their films, Ghayal where the actress played an emotional balance to “Ajay”of sunny deol is also quite good. Meenakshi played the role of a journalist. Her role Opposite amitabh bachchan in Shanshah is worthy too. She was looking good for longer innigs but somehow lost her stardom, the talented dancer has said good bye to films and is living a happy married life with banker Harish. She left films in the mid-90s

ayeshaAyesha Jhulka(actress):Popular hits like Khiladi(Akshay kumar), Jo jeeta wahi sikandar(Aamir khan), Kurbaan(Salman khan) with contemporary leading Heroes of bollywood give stardom to the bubbly actress. Her film with Avinash wadhawan Balmaa is also quite appreciable, post Waqt humara hai she gone missing. After disappearing long from silver frame, ayesha resumed her acting career as supporting actress and cameo appearences. She did small roles in films like Socha Na tha, Run, Umrao Jaan. Ayesha was seen recently at the Gulzar book launch…time and tide wait for no one…cinema replaced her with fresh faces.

rahul123Rahul Roy (actor): claim to fame: Rahul Roy’s debut appearance for aashiqui placed him into certain stardom, rahul soon became a familiar face to indian audiences. Rahul and Anu made a welcome pair, they were well received. The Mahesh bhatt film generated name and identity for freshers such as Rahul, Anu and Deepak tijori.Tijori who essayed rahul’s friend in the popular Aashiqui is film maker now. Anu agrawal who played “Anu” has said goodbye to acting. She runs a yoga school.
dil ka aalam main kya bataun tujhe
ek chehre ne bahut pyar se dekha mujhe

Still recreates the Rahul-Tijori magic. aashiqui pals symbolizes the perfect loveable Hindi screen friendship. For aashiqui most of things fell in right order and proportion and in rahul roy’s favor too, it worked wonder. Phenomenal debut however didn’t insure a longer good run for the actor. Post aashiqui nothing sort of happening took place, films like Gumraah, Is raat ki subah nahi, Junoon, Gazab tamasha didn’t worked. At the end of day one can say wrong film selections, the fragile roles and runtime error limited Rahul roy’s carrier growth. Like many yesteryear stars the actor too switched to television reality shows. Rahul roy is Big boss season1 winner zindagi ji lenge hum.

manoj Manoj Bajpai claim to fame: promising television break forswabhimaan booked a potential bollywood star in Manoj bajpai. Mahesh bhatt’s television serial also placed ashutosh rana , sharad Kapoor in league of television-silver screen Actors. Manoj bajpai initiated his film carrier with small roles in films like Tamanna, Bandit queen, Drohkaal. He showed potential and thus a big bollywood break was in contention. Ram gopal varma’s Satya happened, film is often looked upon as trend –setting movie on Crime and Underworld nexus. A trend setting character satya’s Bhiku Mhatre….mumbai ka king kaun? Bhiku mhatre is still a piece. Bhiku mahtre’s role placed manoj bajpai in comfortable position, a position of star. With likes of Vinod khanna, Shatrughan sinha, Shahrukh Khan who switched to” Hero” post their negative role selection. Everyone expected a same phenomenon happening with manoj bajpai too, they saw their “Hero” in manoj bajpai’s bhiku. Bihar based Shool : challenging role as inspector Samar Pratap Singh gave bajpai a strong critical acclaim, he won awards…hero was born.

Manoj bajpai continued to do films…limited potions, Film selection, non availability of carved out Roles, Runtime error poised threat to much deserving cinematic carrier… Road, Zubeida, Veerzara, Fareb, Money hai to honey hai, Acid factory didn’t help star’s revival to distinct league sanjay gupta’s dus kahaniyaan and madhur bhandarkar’s latest offering Jail somehow places the actor once again in the contention. Manoj bajpai is a great actor . He deserves a role of caliber, place him in his league. He is always there…mumbai ka king Kaun?

gaurav2 Kumar Gaurav (actor) claim to fame: son of superstar Rajendra Kumar, Kumar gaurav being the fortune with him entertained a reserved slot as boy next door. Positive facial attributes moved the charming debutant close to bollywood contention. father Rajendra launched his promising, good-looking young son with Love story. film set the new trend of love stories ie; boy meets the girl and girl meets the boy films… Maine pyar kiya, Qayamat se qayamat tak, Aashqui, Phool aur kaante, Jaan tere naam, Jab we met, Kaho na pyar hai and many signify the trend set by the Kumar gaurav’s debut film.

Overwhelming debut made Kumar a star, mahesh bhatt offered him a cast in naam. story about mother and two loving sons, Film symbolizes perfect brother-brother relations. Nutan, Kumar gaurav, Sanjay dutt, Amrita singh, Paresh rawal played their part to success. Kumar gaurav and Sanjay Dutt played brothers, humane elegance made naam success. To gaurav’s fortune most of the credits for naam went co-star Sanjay dutt, credits must also go to kumar gaurav the “wrongly placed actor” . I personally see Kumar deserved accolades. Janam added another feather in kumar gaurav’s cap. janam is a story about a family, kumar gaurav is son rahul to parents Anupam kher and Anita kanwal. In “Janam” he is rahul, a caring son to mother but is rebel for father…Janam is well versed sample performance to kumar gaurav. With passage of time and era bygone his film appearances became less and rare . In spite of being a gifted personality, Kumar Gaurav remained a rare screen name…Phool effortlessly tried to bring kumar gaurav into silver frame again , film relaunched Kumar opposite happening Madhuri dixit. It however proved to be a late effort .The actor lately switched to foreign tinsel destinations and has done Guiana 1838. Sanjay gupta’s Kaante stands as kumar gaurav’s last bollywood appearance.

ashu Ashutosh Rana(Actor) : claim to fame : promising television debut as tyagi of Swabhimaan booked ashutosh rana as potential bollywood star. In the lines of Manoj bajpai, Sharad kapoor, Ronit Roy : Swabhimaan co- actors ashutosh rana also switched to wider screen format , rana had already won over audiences with television. He stormed into the silver screen bastion with tanuja Chandra’s dushman. He however didn’t appeared as Hero ,actor’s acting credentials cannot be overlooked. Best performances in negative role for films like Dushman, Sangharsh, Haasil won him many accolades. Ashutosh rana’s gokul pandit disturbed audiences with his psyche. Rana’s character for dushman is an average everyday guy one would encounter; appearance wise, But scratch him deep inside and you are shocked . For a hardcore cult character like gokul you need someone like ashutosh –a prolific hindi speaker. Rana’s character study, never seen before with maverick skills and underlining dialogue delivery makes him one of the favorite baddies. Tanuja chandra’s celluloid offering placed him in a different league“Dushman” where he played a psychopath killer. Post this film rana got negative roles mostly. He is still doing films but memories and impressions however fall for breaking-in-performances only, Who would forget lajja shankar…frightening deadly voice.

good tribute 2 some lost ones…bang on about RGV…although I’m not sure about some of the choices…anu agarwal or rahul roy etc can be safely discarded as one time wonders…don’t think they were great actors capable of delivering constant success….

& about Kumar Sanu…no matter how popular he was, he tormented my childhood with his monotonous nasal crooning…i always wondered why he was so popular and why he won so many awards…on hindsight he seems more like a predecessor of Himesh rather than a successor Kishor…

But again, yes I do miss ppl like SPB & Meenakshi…& given worthy roles, ppl like Manoj can still make a comeback…

I don’t think you can really say that SPB has faded out. Yes, he had limited innings in Hindi Cinema but continues to do strong in Telugu and Tamil Cinema. He has been working there for almost 25-30 years , so i guess including him in the above list is not right.

And other names that you mentioned were never superstars.

  10. oz oz says:

What’s your definition of “One time Superstar”? Is it one movie? or Once upon a time superstar (in which case that’s a gross English error on your part calling Once – One)

Assuming you mean one movie super star – how can RGV be in this? He’s been making films since many of the young readers chaddi days. If his films are going cuckoo it’s only in the recent few years, besides the sporadic ones in the 90s.

Your statement “Overconfidence and attitude has done the damage”
My statement “Bad grammer and english have made your thoughts utterly unreadable”

S.P. Balasubramanium. Dude wtf! How aware are you of his work in cinema or do you restrict yourself to Hindi cinema? It’s a shame to call oneself a cine buff if you are going to talk about SPB in such lists. But then a keyboard and an internet connection gives ultimate power to anyone to say anything about even great achievers like SPB.

Your statement “Manoj bajpai continued to do films…limited potions”
My question: “What the f is limited potions?” Are you talking alcohol, drugs or making way for Aladin this Friday?

Your statement “Anu agrawal who played “Anu” has said goodbye to acting. She runs a yoga school.”
My question: Why are the last names of every actor in your blog in small caps? Surely some stretching in yoga could help you capitalize at appropriate places.

Your statement “Love story. film set the new trend of love stories ie; boy meets the girl and girl meets the boy films… Maine pyar kiya, Qayamat se qayamat tak, Aashqui, Phool aur kaante, Jaan tere naam, Jab we met, Kaho na pyar hai ”

My retort: This is untrue and a gross misrepresentation of facts down the 80s history of movies, before and thereafter. Do you know what year did Love Story release? And how many years after Love Story did QSQT and Maine Pyar Kiya release. Do you mean to say that people waited 8 years after 1981 (the year Love Story released) to catch on to the trend of making love stories in 1988 (the year QSQT released).

Can you tell me how many years BEFORE Love Story was there a movie on romance? Or can you tell me when was the next movie on romance released after Love Story?

This is outrageous. If you think Love Story started a trend 8 years later.

For your information. Love Story was directed by Rahul Rawail but a fallout with the producer Rajendra Kumar led to his name being removed as the director. Rahul went on to make another romance based subject. It was called Betaab. And it launched Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh.

Yes Love Story in my opinion did start a trend (if it did not pre exist). It started the trend of launching the children of people in the movie business, in romance based movies. After Kumar Gaurav, many the then stars and movie professionals have their kids jump starting their career in love stories – Sunny and Bobby Deol, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapur and so many more… it kind of created a thumb rule that if you are in the movie business and your kid wants to act then create a love story based movie.

Such half baked knowledge being stretched out like a chewing gum… dude comeon!

Names like RGV, Meenakshi Seshadri,SPB etc have no reason to be listed here. And Arvind Swamy is a successful businessman who dallied in films briefly. And its not like its the end of the road for people like Manoj Bajpai and Ashutosh Rana.Wish the post could have focussed on people more relevant to the issue.

It would be great if the author could come out of his Hindi/Bollywood cocoon to know what people like SPB, Aravind Swamy have done in their lives… I can’t believe PFC is giving a free license to post such “stupid” articles… Is there anything called moderation in PFC nowadays?

Dilnawaz, I can see you offended cinematic sensibilities of quite many lovers of films (Including me).

On a lighter note I am sure if world cinema is bollywood cinema, you would like to add this to your list : (WOuld like to write as if me is you, as you would have said) (for others, sarcasm is intended)

    1. Shekhar Kapoor : Widely known for his work Mr. India and his wife, no one knows where exactly he has gone. Last we saw him was on some TV Talent hunt. He could have won Oscars had he had made more Indian movies.

    2. Om Puri : Known for his intense acting in Drohkaal and films like “Dulhan hum le jayenge” the man seems to ahve missed the train in 90s. Where was he? A career lost amongst the fighting films (we call them action flicks).

    3. Yesudas : I cant even recall good songs he sang.

    4. Lata Mangeshkar : SHe ruled the silver screen for more than 40 years, but is difficult to be seen around these days. Her younger sister, Ashaji seems to be a promising future star.

    5. Mithun Chakraborty : Once called Jimmy is now recognized as the Dance India Dance Judge with limited capabilities to dance and is father of another flop actor who is well called Jimmy.

    6. Mohanlal : I think he had a lot of potential after I saw Saza-e-kalapani, just needed to shed some weight.

    7. Kamal Hasan : Yes our very own VASU from ek duje ke lie, he tried many hindi films but didnot succeed, played second lead in films like Saagar. He even tried with a flop comeback movie HEY RAM, A talent lost.

    8. Rajnikant : The present age folks might just know him like a juggler of cigarretes and bidis but he had done very good films like John Johnny Janardan, only if it werent inspired from another film called Naseeb.

    9. Divya Bharti : She was too good in Deewana. Why is she not working in movies these days?

And I can think of some 475 other names but would rest my case here :) .

    Take it light. Enjoy.

Abt RGV – he is not a One-Time-Superstar…he is still a super star. He is still making films and some of the great stuff is still to come from him. Wait for Rann.

Abt Kumar Sanu – You say that you have a dil to write about stars who fetched stardom with their very first film. Do you know tht kumar din got success from his first film. he started it in 1987 with a movie called Aandhiyan (Shatrughan Sinha – Mumtaz). And thn he did films like Kabza, Mujrim, Jadugar, etc etc. He was one of the leading singer of T-series and re-sung many kishor da’s song for gulshan kumar. Aashique was his first breakthrough, in which he sang all but one songs of the movie. He has won 5 consicutive filmfare awards for aashiqui (1990), Saajan (1991), Deewana (92), Bazigar (93) and 1942: A love story (94).

Abt SPB – I dont want to comment anything on this. Oz bahi has said it and tht is it.

Abt Arvind – Did u bother to know why he was present at some school function. He is currently the Chairman and MD of Talent Maximus. Talent Maximus is engaged in Payroll Processing and Employee administration. It is the fastest growing service provider in its domain.

Its sad to see tht you have mentioned wutever name came in your mind..oops DIL….but before tht, atleast chk the credentials. And some of the stars mentioned in the post are still active in cinema like Manoj, Ashutosh Rana, Kumar Gaurav (he has started his own production company and soon will be coming up with new films as a producer).

And if you want to say that they were superstars at some point of time, but they are not anymore…even AB has gone through the same face when people thought that his career is finished now with a series of flop films like toofan, jadugar, ajooba, indrajeet, lal badshaah, mritudaata etc…but he came back and proved that the best is yet to come out of him…

I am not comparing manoj or ashutosh or for tht matter anybody with AB, but the kind of actors they are, you never know they can again mark their presence on the silver screen. They just need another Satya or Dushman.

I wud love to give you some info about all the mentioned names…but always keep your facts right. Its easy to write “Dil jo bhi kahe”…but before writing, u shud be sure of wut you are writing…and not just for the sake of your dil, yuo write anything

@Jay – you may include rajesh khanna, dev anand, ravina tondon, karishma kapoor, sushmita sen, etc etc.
And dude, divya bharti?? tht was very sarcastic and rude of you…lolz.

@ Oz Bhai – I have never sent any of my rejected post again…shud i keep on sending so that its published…Just jokin, but your comments were awesome. U have always inspired me of digging more and more before writing anything. Thans for tht.

As far as I remember the reports said she was drinking wine around that time. Her boyfriend at that time – is the producer of Kambakth Ishq and he dedicated Divya’s last movie produced by him in memory of Divya Bharti.

    Hello,

My concern is not about the blog by dilnawaz, its more about the quality of discussion following it.

Its absolutely possible that we PFC readers have different/contradicting views on various subjects but then we can always have a healthy discussion about it. Lets assume for a minute that the post is really bad may be in terms of content and or in terms of language. then my question is why was this post allowed to be published?

@ Oz – I respect your knowledge about movies. Stuff you have written about the movie Love Story and related stuff shows that you do know a lot. I don’t think you need to continuously the F word or write in a condescending tone to some one to prove your point. I don’t think this is a forum where we are meant to act as grammar tutors for each other. The primary objective is to talk and discuss about cinema. If there is someone who does have a problem in writing effectively I feel that he should be helped out instead of being made fun by a bunch of people.

Lets try to make these discussions more constructive!!!
