Online Critics Society
The thought having an Online Critics Society came into my mind by looking at the present situation of the Indian Cinema.
Many people might be under the delusion that Indian Cinema has a good reputation outside India, sorry to say that the present Indian Cinema does not have that reputation.
When i was talking to my friend about the Indian Cinema who lives in US i came to know the downfall of standards of Indian Cinema.
Indian had produced some wonderful film makers like Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy,Shaym Benegal,Guru Dutt,K.vishwanath etc… but do we have any hope of finding film makers mentioned above in the futre? answer is very simple and straight –NO
There are many reasons for this condition of Indian Cinema and one of the reasons is the awards.I feel that the awards presented by various groups is just BULLSHIT, whom are they trying to fool? Every true film lover knows that those awards are BULLSHIT.Many biggies
put their money to get awards,i don’t know what satisfaction they get when they receive the award.
The Media should be ashamed as most of these meaningless awards are given by the TV channels.Recently i was watching the awards and the award for the Best supporting Actress goes to the “Chak De Girls” ,I was just shocked. The best debutant actor goes to “Ranbir Kapoor”. I felt that “Neil Nitin Mukesh” has done much better than Ranbir Kapoor and not to say about the Best Debutant Actress. Unfortunately in Bollywood the off-screen gossips
overcast everything.I hardly find films like Black Friday,Johnny Gaddar in the list of the nominated films.
Many might feel that whats the great deal about these awards. The future is going to be much worse, the present generation guys don’t know that India has produced some wonderful films like Pather Panchali,Pyaasa,Jalsaghar,Ankur,Nishnath,Do Bhiga Zamen etc..,
The scope for making films which has a creativity will be closed. We find very few film makers like Vishal Bharadwaj who makes some wonderful films like Maqbool, Blue Umbrella,Om Kara, but how many days he can make films without any support?
We are fortunate that we are able to watch films like Black Friday and to some audacious attempts like No Smoking,Khosla ka Gholsa,Manorama Six feet Under etc.., and the only survival for these kind of films are the Multiplexes(Thanks to Capitalism).
Many people who want to take film making as a career are reluctant to join the premier film Institutes of India.I bet that Nine(9) out of Ten(10) guys would like to join as an Assistant
Director to Karan Johar rather than Shyam Bengal,K.Vishwanth etc…
The student strength of film Institutes like Satyajit Ray film Institute,Nation Film
Development Corporation(NFDC) etc.,,.
Being a film lover and a critic i can only show my frustration in words, i cant really show and provide the praise for film makers like Anurag Kashyap for making a mind blowing film like Black Friday and Sriram Raghavan for making Johnny Gaddar and many others. We desperately need
an Online Critic Association where we can give awards for those people who really deserves them.
Do the critics have to bear the words like :
Baskets of ..
Asstimilators of…
Maa ki Bahan ki takdir …..
Fakr hai–
Few sentences befor the finish:
1.Some actors should not forget that they got recogniton in Bollywood for the films like Om Kara etc.,,.
2.Actors who laugh for jokes like Baskets of ..Asstimilators of…Maa ki Bahan ki takdir …..Fakr hai are laughing at Indian Cinema.
3.Grow Up MEDIA

I agree completely. Awards are today a bunch of crap. Having said that, Indian cinema has produced some gems in the recent past. To name a few
1. 1971- Gem of a movie. It went completely unnoticed, as expected.
2. Johnny Gaddar- One of the best thrillers to have come out of Indian cinema.
3. Aamir
4. Rang De Basanti

Agreed. All the awards given out are utter crap and manipulated. But dont understand why its a hindrance to good films. People with a minimum level of IQ dont care a damn for these awards.

Film Criticism in India does not exist, critics ramble half of the time with generalized vocab judging films sole on merits and values not completely inherent to Cinema(mise-en-scene), but subordinate part of Cinema(acting, story). Shows the lack of discipline and dire understanding of the cinematographic medium. Beside one does not being great by watching a Godard film or remain a buffon if all he has seen is a Karan Johar flick. The goal of Indian Criticism should help the audience distinguish between the two- on the merits of their qualities of Cinema per se.
I quite agree that we need an Online Critic Society where people discuss, dissect, and inform about films in true forms and meanings. Since although we are a cinema crazy nation most people are oblivious about the medium per se, and half, if not all, our critics are mere television hosts or sub-par film reviewer. Truffaut prophecy is very much true in a country like ours, when he said, “There would come a time when films would be judged by people who never heard of F.W. Murnau”. Something very true for our own lot.

@nitish
Well said Nitish.I thank you for reminding the statement by François Truffaut. If you look at the present critics in some news channels like “Headlines Today” –she is just unbearable.
Academy Awards(Oscars) contain much of the red carpet show filled with various actors and actress trying to reflect the fashionalbe content, but when the real show begins its entirely different,at lastit is dominated with the perception of critics.

All right well said and properly written article..on pfc
but to say it’s written in a highly frustated mood and to be very honest i didn’t get wat the point is actually media, awards actors or the entire cinema…i guess the awards……..but all know that these awards have become a part of earning to biggies as India and Indian across the world are despo to see their loved one stars..
lets go to the other side well the awards…
1. Giving recognition to new comers
2. Spreading cinema to more people
3. Creating plenty of Jobs as explore places lik singapore malaysiya, london etc.
4. And i guess a few more things like i dont remem
so u hav ur point but let them make the crap ……

I think very few people take awards seriously. Most of us know it does not matter. Even the oscars and cannes due to some process involved. Anyways art is subjectve and hence cannot be generalised and rated but awards do celebrate cinema and appreciate the hardwork put in by artists (eventhough it may be biased) that is the good part of it.
Btw @ Krishna
Black Friday is a good film but definitely not as great as it made out to be. There are many reasons. One is there was a great material and the film was just good. Could have been a epic film. Sticking to the book was fine but should have gone out of it to make it great.

Awards themselves don’t matter. What happens though,is that actors who gather awards from couple of shitty functions start capitalizing on this recognition. Our equally shitty media hype them as great actors of the generation as well.
Kareena-Karisma Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Ranbir Kapoor, or Jr AB may have acted ‘well’ in one or two movies at some point. These people are not as good actors as many others but because they got recognition from award functions, media has hyped them as if they were some of the ‘greatest’ ever. And when such information is constantly fed to people, it becomes a version of ‘truth’.

i think the awards will die a natural death as their credibility goes.Film criticism in india is indeed dead as most of the critics are either just trade pundits or just sycophants who have their own favorite stars. The real problem is to take good cinema to those who will pay money to watch it.This cannot happen in the current model of distribution and screening we have.

agree…i dont watch the awards…thats y i came to this site in the first place…havent heard much of the older ones but ones like jg,manorama,bf,nm deserve praise…and agree with pranay its not like the audience or the quality of movies is bad…its the media/distribution.but things r becoming better and it will happen in a few yrs.
