OSCAR 2007 - Best Actors/Actresses in Leading Roles

Its OSCAR time in Hollywood. With the writer’s Strike coming to an end yesterday, this town will be gripped with Oscar Buzz now. This year has been an exceptionally great year for films in hollywood. It was a year when the Speciality Divisions of all the Studios did exceptionally well.

****************
Best Actor in Leading Role -

George Clooney - MICHAEL CLAYTON

I watched this film before any of the other films that is heavily nominated this year. It has to be George Clooney’ s best & most mature performance till date. He is sutble, his face has the pain his character carries like scars from the battles of life. George Clooney is perhaps one of the best actors in Hollywood to play such a character. Kevin Spacey is another guy, but he is doing theater now(which is fuckin awesome). The scene with his son in the car is so deep & Clooney couldn’t have done better with it. It was one of the best Father-Son in recent years.

Daniel Day-Lewis - THERE WILL BE BLOOD
The winner. Even if you think its not the best performance of 2007, you would have to agree that Daniel is going to win the OSCAR for sure.

Johnny Depp - SWEENY TODD
I have not seen this one. I am boycotting the collective work of Johnny Depp & Tim Burton for past 3 years. I think Tim Burton has almost kidnapped Johnny Depp. If he is not doing Pirates, he must be doing another Tim Burton film. Besides I’m not into that genre anyways. But I have heard mixed reactions to the film. Another reason I won’t watch this film is because its a musical, but thats only secondary reason.

Tommy Lee-Jones - IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH

Another great performance by Tommy. Last year I became a big fan of Tommy-Lee Jones. Not just the actor, but the MAN. Esp after I watched his beautiful directorial debut The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Until that moment I was never a big fan of him. To he seemed to play the same character of a Law Enforcer in film after film. I gave this film a pass when it came out in theater, mainly because of its director. I didn’t expect Paul haggis to really make a very honest film after the golden run he has had at the Box Office & Oscars. But with IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH he has taken a U-Turn. Iraq war is something I’m very sensitive about. And I’m always scared when films about IRAQ come out. If they will be able to make a honest film, without crossing that thin line of pretentiousness. Its not the most entertaining film, its not the most meaningful film, but it is a very honest work from somebody who is right now a Golden Boy of Hollywood & can do whatever he fancies. Another reason I think Tommy got nominated for this film is also because of his powerful performance in NO COUNTRY. But Javier Bardem was gonna get the nod for that one. So Tommy gets nominated for a much neglected film of 2007.

Viggo Mortensen - EASTERN PROMISES
The only good thing about this forgettable film from DAVID CRONENBERG. I had so many issues with this film that it will require a seperate post in itself. But I think it didn’t deserve any nomination. I have a lot of respect for Viggo. But there were other deserving actors.

———————–
Actors who missed out.

Frank Langella - STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING
This was my fav, performance of 2007. Its a very New York film. Dabba & Mithun must watch this film.

Philip Seymor Hoffman - THE SAVAGES & BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU ARE DEAD
What a year for him. If there is a award for Actor of 2007 he would beat Cassey Affleck & Tommy Lee Jones to it.

Cassey Affleck - GONE BABY GONE
Like Philip, he also gets to fight out the Best Supporting trophy for this year. But He really deserved to be in this category too.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

In a year of such great films, it was an unusually weak year as far as strong Female Lead Roles are concerned. Feminists might say “DUH!”, but I found it quite unusual.

Cate Blanchett - ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
I have to be honest with you, I really don’t remember if her performance was worthy of a nomination in such a bad movie. What would be one of the worst background scores in a Hollywood film ever, kept me distracted from noticing the other things in the film. I hope Shekhar is done doing these films. He is too good a filmmaker to be wasting his years doing such films. This nomination is the proof that 2007 was not a very good year for actresses.

Julie Christie - AWAY FROM HER
I didn’t like this film either. Neither did I like Julie Christie in the film. For some strange reason It kept getting good buzz in Hollywood. I would say mainly because of Sarah Polley & Julie Christie’s reputation. The only good thing about the film for me was Olympia Dukakis. She is great in it.

Marion Cotillard - LA VIE EN ROSE
She has swept every award she has been nominated in 2007. That could be the only reason why she might lose the Oscar to Ellen Page. But it is definitely the best performance by an actresss in 2007. I would love to see her win.

Ellen Page - JUNO
Arguably the best performance by an actress in lead role in an American film in 2007. Everybody has seen this film by now. i think she has the best chance of getting the award.

—————
Actress who missed out

Angelina Jolie - A MIGHTY HEART
A film that seemed to have been made with the sole purpose of getting Angelina a Nomination for Oscar. She must have been dissapointed.
—————-

Winners -

Daniel Day Lewis - Best Actor in a Leading Role
Ellen Page - Best Actress in a Leading Role

  2. Mainak on February 12th, 2008 11:07 pm

    @Saurav
    I will do posts on Supporting Roles & Best Film this over next few week.
    Unfortunately I have not seen any of the Foreign Film. The movies that were the buzz didn’t get nominated.
    I will have to do some research to write about the writer’s strike. I’ll try.

    Mainak,

    wat about nomination( best actor) for Emile Hirsch for INTO THE WILD…

    He just too good in that movie…. lost 40 pounds for a single scene( which is 10 sec)..

    dont say u missed this movie…

    I lost respect for oscars as there is no nomination for this movie in many categories…

    Here are some of the misses for into the wild:

    Best adapted screenplay
    Best music
    Best director

    Dont know why Jhonny depp has a nominee for sweeney todd… he is a great actor but oscars are just playing for the gallery i guess…

    But overall we had some great movies last year

    no country for old men
    juno
    there will be blood
    Micheal clayton

    But wat about Into the wild…. sean penn would be
    laughing at the oscars

  7. doremi on February 13th, 2008 11:09 pm

    Seriously can’t see anyone topping Ellen Page’s performance in Juno. She was absolutely brilliant.

    Vineeth
    You have raised the wrong question. I think Ravptor would be better person to have that conversation about the GREATNESS OF INTO THE WILD.

    If not I will come back tommorow & rant about it.

    DOREMI
    Watch Marion Cotillard in LA VIE EN ROSE.

    I think Emile Hirsch was amazing in “Into the wild”. It was an amazing performance, and you also have to see that all the actors who got nominated have a great body of work, but this guy started with movies like Girls Next Door, which was nothing but a fart. He did cam a long way and this performance was simply mindblowing.

    Tell me why “Eastern promises” is such a great movie? Althogh Viggo is an amazing actor. There was a time when if women used to go topless in a relatively good movie, they got the nod to oscars and quite a few of them won also. I think same trend is now starting for men, if you go full frontal you get a nod.

    @Dabba
    I’m having a very busy & strange week. I didnt get your drift.

  14. Mainak on February 15th, 2008 4:44 pm

    @Vivek & Vineeth

    I’m sure INTO THE WILD is a fascinating film for many. I have nothing but tremendous respect for Sean Penn. He is a man with a conscious. He is also very angry with the world & the ingorance of the people living in it. Which was actually pretty much the theme of Into The Wild.
    His intentions are always very noble. But its like they say “Preaching to the Choir” for me. For me Alex didn’t lead a extra ordinary life. I’m not tryin to be-little his sacrifices, but I found the film a bit preachy. I didn’t learn anything new from the film. And the film was very boring too. It took me 3 attempts to finish it.
    I’m very interested in the lifestyles of all the people who are hailing INTO THE WILD. What kind of jobs they have. What kind of social awareness they have about the world they are in. How is their relationship with the people around them. Do they work for a Evil Corporate company? Or have they taken a brave & noble path in life?
    Why this film touches so many people?

    I think it’s similar to the experience of THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES. That movie made me feel so guilty about my life. Compared to the compassion of CHE’s life we are such selfish creatures.
    I think INTO THE WILD has the same effect on people who don’t do anything to improve this world. or even Change their own life.

    @Vivek

    Viggo def deserves the Oscar nod more than Emile. The person who really missed out is Casey Affleck for GBG.

    My picks

    Best Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis
    Best Actress - Marion Cotillard
    Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem
    Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett
    Animated Film - Ratatouille
    Art Direction - There Will be Blood
    Cinematography - There Will be Blood
    Costumes - Elizabeth The Golden Age
    Directing - PTA
    Editing - Bourne Ultimatum
    Makeup - La Vie en rose
    Score - Michael Clayton
    Best Picture - No Country for Old Men
    Sound Editing / Sound Mixing - Bourne Ultimatum
    Adapted Screenplay - No Country
    Original Screenplay - Michael Clayton

    Of course I expect to only have a 50% accuracy rate. The categories I haven’t mentioned I haven’t seen the films.

    mainak, from your comment in 14 and knowing you on a personal level, i feel that the reason you didn’t feel for the protagonist in ITW is because you ARE the protagonist himself. rebelling against the norm. living your own life the way YOU want to live it. whereas the people that have acclaimed it, are the people that wish they were in the protagonist’s shoes. they wish they had lived that life themselves, but for whatever reason, they didn’t. mind you, i say this without having seen the movie. so this might be a judgmental call on my part, but for some reason i’m dead confident that i’m right. the people that envy the protagonist, wish to be him. those that ARE him, i.e. you, don’t envy him, and thusly, don’t see what’s so great about him, because you yourself are living his life to a certain extent. do let me know if i’m completely wrong, but if i’m right to even a certain extent, you should have your answer to why this movie is being hailed as widely as it is.

    about ur comment on my Night post and the people that ruined Sixth sense for you

  18. rudro on February 16th, 2008 5:38 am

    Just watched no country for old men and Juno. I think it will take a criminal offence(like the snubbing of Into The Wild) to deny Ellen Page the award. But I was amazed to see that NCforOM got so many nominations. Academy generally stays away from recognizing bleak-themed, abstract filmmaking, but it is surprising that NCforOM, which is a masterpiece(my personal opinion) and resembles more an european or korean style of filmaking rather than the usual hollywood staff, might actually win the best picture! Should congratulate Academy if they go for that…Its like Black Friday winning in the Filmfare awards!

  19. Mainak on February 16th, 2008 1:16 pm

    @Rudro
    Have you seen La Vie en rose? It would not be a criminal offence to deny Ellen Page her award. Because there is someone better than her in that list. But I have to admit its not as beautiful as the so called SNUBBING of INTO THE WILD.

    I’m praying they don’t give the best Actres award to Julie Christie. Its highly unlikely but not impossible.

  20. Mainak on February 16th, 2008 1:38 pm

    @Striker

    I kinda said the same thing in a different way :)
