Hi Folks,
Just got this from the Academy. I know there are quite a few folks in PFC who have made short and animated short films, so if you want to chance your luck, here is the opportunity.
Read on: Beverly Hills, CA — Wednesday, October 1, is the deadline to submit entries in the Live Action Short Film, Animated Short Film and Foreign Language Film categories to be considered for the 81st Academy Awards®. Complete entries must arrive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by 5 p.m. PT that day.
In the short film categories, filmmakers must submit an entry form, one film print or copy in an approved digital format, and all other required materials by the deadline. (THIS IS OF INTEREST TO PFC ALSO IT DOES NOT TALK ABOUT ONE PER COUNTRY, SO CLEARLY THERE IS SCOPE FOR MORE AND ALSO SELF SUBMISSIONS, AS OPPOSED TO TRYING TO BE NICE OR PLAYING UP TO SOME JUDGES, TAKE CONTROL, HERE THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS).
In the Foreign Language Film category, filmmakers must submit entry forms, one English-subtitled film print and all other required materials by the deadline. Only one motion picture will be accepted from each country. (FOR THIS THE ENTRY FROM INDIA HAS ALREADY BEEN DETERMINED, BUT SOUTH ASIANS LIVING IN OTHER GEOGRAPHIES ARE WELECOME TO SEND IT FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES)
Complete 81st Academy Awards rules are available at http://www.oscars.org/81academyawards/rules/index.html.
Additional information may be obtained by contacting Awards Coordinator Torene Svitil via phone at (310) 247-3000, ext. 190, by fax at (310) 247-2600, or by e-mail at tsvitil@oscars.org.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2008 will be presented on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide
Note: This message will post to other sites since the source is the Academy of Motion Pictures.

Vivek,
Sorry, this is slightly off-topic. I have a question. Read that the makers of ‘Tingya’ are going to send it as an independent entry to the Oscars. Is that possible? (always thought that only the country’s film federation can nominate films under the foreign language films category) Under which category would such independent entries compete? If every filmmaker started entering his work as an independent entry wouldn’t that open a pandora’s box and create confusion amongst the members of the jury. Somebody please ENLIGHTEN.
As far as I know, there’s one OFFICIAL entry from each country. That apart people can run their films individually. This has happened in the past.
Thanks for the clarification Joyjeet.
Raj- good question and to get the official verdict on this best to contact the email of the Oscar rep that I have given in my post. I can also do that, in fact this weekend will be down in LA, so might get some insight into that.
On the Short and Animation, not sure if the One Film per country rule applies in the submission, probably in the final selection yes.
Vivek, thanks for the clarification.
I made a short film now how do i send my entry? Jes help me out Vivek… thnx
