Oscars 2007 - Best Actors/Actresses in Supporting Roles
BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
1)Cassey Affleck - THE ASSASINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
A superb performance by one of the 3 actors who ruled 2007. Its hard to imagine anyone else in that role after you have seen Cassey’s performance. But its not enough to win. Winners of this category usually are Characters that are very loud & flamboyant & who steal the movie from their Lead Characters.
2) Javier Bardem - NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
The winner.
An Amazing performance by His Highness. Will his highness win the OScar? I think he will. Its a very powerful character. And Javier does a terrific job of it. Javier has also entered Hollywood in a big way. He has a woody allen film on the way apart from many other projects. American audiences got introduced to him in a big way with this character. If he wins it ill mean good business for his other projects. And Hollywood loves good business. For us fans of His Highness, its just another day at work for him. No big deal. :)
Long Live His Highness.
FRIENDO!
3) Philip Seymour Hoffman - CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR
2007 was a Philip Seymour Hoffman’s year. If just merit was the only criterion, he would get nominated for the Best Actor in Lead for his part in BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS…. And maybe even in SAVAGES. But its his turn as CIA agent Gust Avrakotos that stole the show. It was him who made this movie the most entertaining film of 2007 for me. (It beat SUPERBAD in case you are wondering)
He is clearly one of the best actors in Hollywood right now.
4) Hal Holbrook - INTO THE WILD
The only good thing in this film. He saves the movie from becoming a really preachy film. but its not enough.
5) Tom Wilkinson - MICHAEL CLAYTON
I can watch anything with Tom Wilkinson on screen. And this was one of personal favorites. Its hard not to laugh when a character says -”I’m Shiva, the God of DEATH”. But he is completely convincing.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
1) Cate Blanchett - I’m NOT THERE
This was my fav part of this extraordinary film. Part mesmerising, part confusing, part boring, part brilliance. This is a film that I need to watch again. If you are not familliar with Bob Dylan’s life it will be very confusing. I’m only partly familliar with the subject. But it was a very interesting film. And Cate is brilliant in it. I think she should win. She deserves to win. How many actresses can pull off being BOB DYLAN on screen?
2) Rube Dee - AMERICAN GANGSTER
Why is she nominated?
3) Saoirse Ronan - ATONEMENT
I refuse to watch this film.
4) Amy Ryan - GONE BABY GONE
Another great role. Amy rocks in this part. And if you have seen her in the second season of THE WIRE, its even more amazing. She has a very good chance of taking the Oscar. She also has the advantage of being a fresh talent as compared to the other 2 serious contenders - Tilda & Cate. Cate has even won this category in 2004 for THE AVIATOR.
WARNING - This Video could mean spoilers for some people who have not seen the film.
4) Tilda Swinton - MICHAEL CLAYTON
She gives a very controlled performance of the ambitious Lawyer who won’t stop at anything. She also has a good very good chance of winning. Mainly because of her very impressive body of work so far. Sometimes Hollywood gives an award not just based on the film that the talent is nominated on, but based on the history of the talent’s work also. In that aspect Tilda has a better chance.

WINNERS
JAVIER BARDEM - No Country For Old Men
I am not sure about the actress. I want Cate to win. But as for reasons above mentioned this category is open for me. I change my mind every second. Its Amy or Cate for me.

His highness should and will win. Love to see a really deserving actor with deserving performance is actually a front runner, a rarity at the oscars. Was awestruck watching Bardem in Schnabel’s Before Night Falls and then The Sea Inside. Mainak, you want to know why Dee was nominated? cuz she is gonna win! Academy has this bizzare unofficial lifetime achievement oscars given out in some form to people with a great career but snubbed at the oscars before(though I doubt Ruby Dee falls even in that category too). With the SAG nod, Momma Dee is actually the front runner here.Though I agree Blanchett’s Dylan is the most accomplished work in this category.
Love your post. Keep them coming for the other categories too!
iam unable to fathom ruby dee’s nomination either ..she is there in like 31/2 scenes in which she does ok nothing remarkable . She also won the SAG award earlier this month !
Academy guys are an emotional bunch they love thier old people :-?
since you refuse to see atonement (god only knows why) you are missing a very good performance by Saoirse Ronan.
in the male category javier bardem was reallly good but hoffmann was exceptional. he was the only reason one can see charlie wilson’s war (an otherwise so-so film)
BTW bardem and swinton won the respective categories in BAFTA
Swinton will win based on her resume. Not just on Michael Clayton. I watched the clip on Amy Ryan from GONE BABY GONE thats posted above & I feel she has a great shot at the OSCAR. I will be happy if she wins too.
Ben Foster’s in 3:10 to Yuma was THE performance of the year for the supporting actor category. But he isn’t even nominated./:)
dear friends ,
i am with manaik for Javier Bardem .. .. do toss .. do pick up any cheat…. JAVIER was born to win this OSCAR …
to add to Javier Performance .. i was lucky enough not to encounter Anton Chigurh in Theatre because i am sure if i did , i wouldn’t have returned home alone ..
i have’nt seen any of the movies except for Atonement in Best Supporting Acting shortlist .. but surely CATE, u deserve it .. u are lovely as BOB DYLAN .. ( may be m BOB fan and is biased)
Bardem was immense. There just cannot be another winner. I’ve seldom seen transformation like that, and he did it with very little make-up. Fucking remarkable.
WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE “INTO THE WILD”!!!!!!!!!
Thanks mainak..gotta catch up on lotsa movies..saw Juno..thats it..Ellen Page is good
AMY Ryan is going to win I feel.
