Oscars 2007 - CINEMATOGRAPHY

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Roger Deakins - THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD

If there was one great film that most cine-fans missed out in 2007 it would be this one. I say Cine-Fans with emphasis because if you are not it, this film is not for you. Its too long, too slow, too philosophical for a regular movie goer. And the cinematography was simply mindblowing. Roger Deakins must win the OSCAR for this film. He is nominated in 2 films, & has been nominated 5 times before without winning. Which makes him the most likely winner if we know anything about how OSCARS are awarded.

Seamus McGarvey - ATONEMENT
I refuse to watch another ENGLISH PATIENT type film.

Janusz Kaminski - THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
Now to me this was the film of 2007. Without any doubt in my mind. Infact I’m so blown by this film, its in my top 10 films ever. The photography was out of this world. And probably the best in this category also. But Kaminski is a rockstar Cinematographer. He has already won 2 Oscars already. And this is a french Film.

So I don’t see no way the Academy is going to give Kaminski another Oscar. Its time for Roger Deakins his OScar.

Roger Deakins - NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
The best American Film of 2007 for me. Unlike the other film he is nominated in, this film has been a crittically & commercially, a huge success. Since the award is going to Roger anyways, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets it for this film. But for me personally it would be the wrong film. And Academy is the master of such cases.

Robert Elswit - THERE WILL BE BLOOD
This movie belonged to the actor, director & the background score. The cinematography was probably as good as it could be, but it loses out to some really exceptional competition .

Winner

ROGER DEAKINS

“I refuse to watch another ennglish patient type film”…this line takes the oscars..stopped watching atonement after the movie rolled for 20 minutes.=))

qutoe - I refuse to watch another ENGLISH PATIENT type film. - unquote

nothing satisfies a woman more than being needed. she needs to be needed. she will project a need even when there is no need. she is always convinced that you need her. while you may not think so.

this makes english patient a piece of work.
    :w;

    attoment is upside down

it is an adult, thinking that, if i have commited a mistake in my childhood, what i would do.

it is an adults thinking imposed upon a child. children don’t think that way.

attonment is a shallow mind trying hard to be literary.

  3. RICK on February 22nd, 2008 12:40 am

i agree with you NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is probably going to be the winner, but you cannot count out ATTONEMENT specially because of that 7 minute tracking shot that is being talked about so much,
by the way, dont you think it is a bit too unfair to catagorize a film like “the english patient” sort before you have seen it, well i have seen the film and let me tell you its nothing simmilar to the english patient, but the ending spoiled the film for me, and it was also a bit too melodramatic for me.

p.s- good to hear NCFOM is doing good buisness, its time people went into watch theese films not because it won an oscar but because it is a great film.

  4. RICK on February 22nd, 2008 12:42 am

its surprising how people are criticizing attonement without even having seen it or having stopped watching it half way through,
am myself no fan of the movie but atleast guys watch it first and then make your opinion.

  5. Sheikhchilli on February 22nd, 2008 12:51 am

I is like Atonement very much. Used a very unique storytelling device.

  6. Phoenixnu on February 22nd, 2008 1:13 am

just hand it to roger deakins for NC4OM. the visuals said everything…so powerful…so gripping. no background music and if u cut out the dialogues then also it will work. its all because the camera says evrything…the mood, the tone, the texture, character n d story. but then i think diving bell is more diffcult film to crack. n kaminski has done it superbly. also, havent seen assiasntaion of jesse james yet.

  7. Sourav on February 22nd, 2008 1:16 am

I go by my instints..I feel if the movie is not worth watching it I dont

  8. morph on February 22nd, 2008 2:12 am

did you walked out of the theatre? or you saw the first 20 minutes on a pirated DVD which is worse[-(

  9. rudro on February 22nd, 2008 2:18 am

roger deakins for NC4OM…, this was one hell of a work..wi.but most likely he will be rewarded for The Jesse James film…

  10. Mithun Gangopadhyay on February 22nd, 2008 2:38 am

Deakins is one of my heroes but unfortunately having two nominations in the same category cancels out the votes.

And to be honest I’m rooting for Elswit for “There will be Blood”. He also shot the amazing “Michael Clayton” which shows his range.

Haven’t seen Atonement yet but I’ve heard the cinematography is brilliant.

Of course with the Oscars you can never really tell. The fact that Emmanuel Lubezki didn’t win for “Children of Men” is criminal.

  11. Sourav on February 22nd, 2008 6:58 am

@ morph..since you have raised this question..whats your guess?

  12. Medium on February 22nd, 2008 7:49 am

cinematography of Atonement is brilliant !!!for sure !!!

I dint like the movie all that much !!! i have no problem with English patient … except that i felt the movie just kept going on and on !!!

I could have digested Atonement if it was a true story !! not sure if it is .. i wasnot bothered to check … if the book was based on true events …
Then OK .. or else … hmmm

Kiminski … god i just love his work !!! but as Mainak said i guess it is Roger’s turn this year !!

  13. striker on February 22nd, 2008 9:29 am

we keep seeing multiple nominations for SRK in the same category.. this is the first time i’ve seen it at the oscars. is anybody else as surprised? has this happened before?

  14. RICK on February 22nd, 2008 9:58 am

    @striker
yup a couple of times before

  15. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 10:44 am

    RICK
You are not getting my point about ENGLISH PATIENT & ATTONEMENT.
    And its not worth explaining.

  16. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 10:47 am

Its a pity no one has seen JESSE JAMES. I highly recommend that you guys try to watch it before the OSCARS. They released the DVD last month I think.

  17. striker on February 22nd, 2008 10:51 am

mainak.. honestly, you didn’t make a point about atonement. you just said you refuse to watch a film like TEP. sure it’s worth explaining. go ahead.. humor us.

rick, what are the other times someone has been nominated multiple times in the same category?

  18. Mithun Gangopadhyay on February 22nd, 2008 11:03 am

    The ones I remember are

Soderbergh for Traffic and Erin Brockovich but he ended up winning. There was no way he couldn’t have won.

Walter Murch for Editing for Ghost and Godfather 3. He lost.

    Forgettin the acting noms.

  19. striker on February 22nd, 2008 11:12 am

interesting.. thanks mithun. i’m surprised the academy hasn’t enforced a “one nomination per category only” policy. i for one, would like to see this happen, since it takes away a spot from someone else who could be in that spot. to crib about SRK’s multiple nominations no longer seems valid, because the indian awards aren’t the only ones that do it.

    dammit.

  20. Mithun Gangopadhyay on February 22nd, 2008 11:20 am

I don’t think enforcing that rule would be wise coz then it would be like reservation and not bout excellence.

Take the example of the best song category. It would be criminal to limit one nomination per artist or even soundtrack if more than one song is brilliant.

Elton John was nominated thrice for Lion King. Won
Alan Menken thrice for Beauty and the Beast. Won

Would you begrudge them this honor?

  21. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 11:29 am

    Like I said….
” If you don’t get my joke, it ain’t worth explaining.”:-w
But since its you, i’ll just drop one line.
I’m mentally allergic of literary adaptions of stories about love stories about a soldier from WWII.

  22. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 11:31 am

I’m watching this hilarious film called -
HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING.

Its a British Comedy. Must watch for Mithun if he has not seen it already. Since he wants to get into Advertising.

  23. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 11:34 am

I think there is a difference between SRK getting multiple nomination & Roger Deakins getting nominated for these two fantastic films.

  24. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 11:37 am

    @mithun
Do you think if CHILDREN OF MEN was a 2007 film, it would have been nominated in more categories. It was a heartbreaking experience that year to see that film being nominated as if it was an action film. Getting only technical nominations.

  25. striker on February 22nd, 2008 11:40 am

good point, but for every nominee that’s good, there’s always someone better, isn’t there? it’s just about discovering them, and giving them that open spot. i hear you about elton john, but why couldn’t they pick one of his 3 songs? i agree it’s no easy task, but then again picking nominees never is. even if 2 other people had been picked for those spots, elton john would’ve won hands down cuz let’s face it.. the lyrics, music, and picturization of “can you feel the love tonight” was just way too strong to beat.

  26. striker on February 22nd, 2008 11:44 am

mainak, just for that, i think you should watch atonement and do a post on it :-?

i know there’s a huge diff between SRK’s and deakins’ nominations.. but you’re not getting my point mainak my man. and it’s not worth explaining.

  27. Mainak on February 22nd, 2008 11:51 am

I get it Striker. And you do have a POINT. Its a socialist way. And I do agree with you a little bit, but not completely. Both the arguments have valid points.

  28. Mithun Gangopadhyay on February 22nd, 2008 12:17 pm

    @Mainak

I would certainly hope so. Chivo has been robbed for two years running with both Children of Men and The New World.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll netflix it.

    @Striker

I just feel that nominating someone just to make up the numbers or because it’s politically correct will lead to a dilution of standards. It’s dangerous thinking which might lead to a future situation in which a film like Lord of the Rings wouldn’t win so many awards coz the Academy might think “Hmm let’s spread the wealth around a bit shall we”.

    Shades of Mandal Commission.

  29. rudro on February 22nd, 2008 8:02 pm

    @ mainak

children of men was nominated for best adapted screenplay in 79th AA, along with cinematography and editing. But honestly, last year had a terrific line up and it was difficult to fit COM in.Though I think it was an amazing film, undoubtedly.

  30. Mainak on February 23rd, 2008 4:22 am

    Rudro
Last year wasn’t as good this year. COM was the best film of 2006 by every standards.
The only movie that can come close would be UNITED 93.
COM should have been the Best Picture & Best Director for sure. But unfortunately it was the year for the Sympathy Oscar for Scorcesse. So Departed took away a lot of undeserving trophies.

  31. Santosh Kumar T K on February 23rd, 2008 1:09 pm

    Just an aside.

Saw the “Atonement” tracking… mini masterpiece. I would have felt let down or “cheated” had it been CGI or digitally manipulated. Thankfully the only additions or manipulation to that audacious shot were a few ships, and some smoke I learn. But that didn’t prepare me enough for the experience I had watching Orson Welles ‘ “Touch of Evil”. Considering its time and era, the free uninhibited flow over the buildings and sweeps across the roads, junctions was awesome. Steadicams I guess were unheard of then when tracks ruled the roost. No matter how much these draw attention to themselves and are termed cinematic show-offs, once in a while they are visual treat. Expect to see such kinetics in our movies. Can’t think of any! Ravi K Chandran came close in Kannathil Muthamittal, and just came close.

  32. Mainak on February 23rd, 2008 3:08 pm

    Santosh
Can you tell me exactly what time in the film does this famous tracking shot happens?
I have the DVD of Atonement at home & don’t want to watch the whole film.

Have you seen the openeing of Altman’s THE PLAYER?
Its a tribute to that shot in TOUCH OF EVIL & the characters are talking about that shot. Its really awesome.

  33. Neeraja on February 23rd, 2008 4:15 pm

Hey Mainak nice posts, keep them coming.
Unfortunately I missed out on most of these movies :( but next week is most probably (and hopefully) Oscar-week for me…gonna clear up this backlog :)

Long time since I posted a random youtube video, and is there a better place to do that than your post? :D
(though I am sure you must have watched this one or might even have posted it here at some point of time)

Do not teach Robert de Niro how to act!

  34. RICK on February 24th, 2008 12:30 am

    @MAINAK…

its about 1 hour 2 mins into the film, when james macavoy come to the beach, hopefully after you have seen and appreciated that shot you will change your opinion about the film.
by the way i thought you refused to see that film?? how come u r having the dvd???:-?

  35. Mainak on February 24th, 2008 12:36 am

    RICK
I have the DVD since last 4 months. And have not seen it. You can imagine how strongly I feel about this film:)
BTW its a screener. Last year my gf received screeners of all the nominated films.

    Thanks for the information Rick.

  36. Mainak on February 24th, 2008 3:08 am

Keep ‘em coming. I had never seen that D’Niro Clip. I’m his fan again:)

This is the opening scene from Werner Herzog’s documentary “My Best Fiend: Klasu Kinski”. Herzog claims that Kinski came to the set of Aguirre fresh off this tour, and expected people to treat him like Jesus.
