His modus Operandi

Audacious burglar constantly outsmarting the public, chowkidars and policemen because of his cleverness and presence of mind. Selected his targets in posh colonies and would arrive thereafter midnight usually in a stolen car. Would keep the engine of the car running. Was an expert in picking locks. He is such a silent and smooth operator that in most of the cases the inmates of the house did not realize that a burglary was being committed under their nose.

In all of the burglaries, the grill of the front door/ window of the house was removed with the help of a long screwdriver and lever to gain entry.

The time of the burglaries was between 2am to 6am

In the case of stolen cars, he had a peculiar style of picking keys from within the house and the targets were the mostly luxury cars. These stolen cars from place have been found abandoned at the next place of crime from where the new cars were to be stolen. The cars were stolen with a peculiar style of picking up the keys from within the house.

The audacity and confidence of the Super Chor could be judged by his conduct and behaviour during and after the execution of the crime. Following are some of the interesting incidents which reflect his extra ordinary confidence and presence of mind:

1. Once when one of the ladies woke up during the burglary, he smiled and greeted her, “Good morning Madam”. Even before she realized, he was gone.

2. Once when one of the chowkidar (watchman) of the area questioned him, he mentioned that ‘Sahib’ is going to the airport and further sought the help of the chowkidar in transporting material from the verandah to the vehicle, which he kindly obliged.

3. Once when a chowkidar questioned him regarding his presence, he went inside the house, bought sweets and offered to the chowkidar, which he very kindly accepted and then he was gone.

4. When one of the girls who was returning after a morning jog, questioned him about taking away her music system, he replied confidently, “You first go up and check with your father who has got you a new music system and has asked me to take away this old one. Even before she could blink her eyes, he was gone.

5. In one of the burglaries he even took away a pet dog (Spanish Pomeranian)) from the house!!!

‘Super chor’ falls in police net, finally

The South district police today claimed to have solved more than 200 cases of burglaries, house thefts and auto thefts with the arrest of a notorious criminal, Devender Singh alias Bunty (31). The Delhi Police had announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head earlier.

His arrest has also led to the recovery of stolen goods worth Rs 4 crore, consisting of precious diamond and gold jewellery, cash, expensive cars, antiques, watches, TVs and other electronic items. He also possessed two flats in Mayur Vihar and two flats in Noida. The stolen items including cars, jewellery, expensive branded watches, electronic items, utensils and cutlery made of silver and brass, antiques, whiskeys, wines, cash and a Chinese-made pistol with six cartridges were also displayed.

The Delhi Police Commissioner, Mr Ajai Raj Sharma, who visited South district to have a look at the recovered items, not only appreciated the efforts of the district police but also increased the cash reward to Rs 1 lakh from Rs 50,000.

The police had spent a number of days looking at his modus operandi, nature of crimes, studied scientific aspects with the help of forensic experts and had also visited a number of states to learn about the crimes he had committed there. Finally, they got a tip-off that Bunty was staying with his associate, Vikram, in a hideout in Mayur Vihar and nabbed him on April 26.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Mr P. Kamaraj, he had been involved in more than 500 cases over the years and he had been active in Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, and several parts of Delhi with the help of his associates in these states. After committing burglaries, he normally would go to other states with the stolen materials and dispose them of there.
He was earlier arrested in 1993 by the special staff of New Delhi police. The district police had solved more than 300 cases and recovered stolen properties worth more than Rs 30 lakh from him then. After that arrest, he had earned also the nickname, Super chor, among the cops.
He is supposed to be an expert in breaking any kinds of locks and handcuffs. Once he opened his handcuff when he was lodged in a Chennai hospital using an empty syringe. He was in police remand then. Bunty was also interested in pets. He had taken away a Spanish Pomeranian from a house which he burgled.

He even consulted a veterinary doctor once on how to tame the dogs and always carried chicken ‘chicklets’ during operations and fed the dogs with ‘chicklets’. Once, the owner of a house had shot his tamed German Shepherd after Bunty had burgled the house terming it as a “useless dog”.
He had also displayed his presence of mind during the operations and outwitted police personnel, chowkidars of houses and victims during several occasions. The Joint Commissioner of Police (South), Mr Satish Chandra, said he always entered the houses with great confidence and vanished from the place when spotted by the owners within no time.

The police said that Bunty was an addict to burglaries and used to do extensive research about the house before committing burglary. He could never stay without committing a crime. Although he had amassed wealth worth crores of rupees and had never been short of money at any circumstances, he continued committing crimes and led a very lavish lifestyle. He also used to spend money on women.

‘Super chor’ gets three years in jail

A city court on Monday sentenced “super chor” Bunty to three years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for two specific cases under Section 411. He has been booked under 200 cases of stealing. Domestic items worth Rs 5 crore were recovered from Devinder alias Bunty’s possession in 2001, which the Delhi Police claims to be the biggest ever recovery as far as domestic items are concerned. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Laxmi Kant Gaud on Monday ordered the sentence. However, Vikram, the co-accused, has been acquitted since no evidence was found against him.

Famous for his unique “style” of stealing, Bunty was very picky about what he would steal. Apart from air-conditioners, cars, refrigerators, paintings, even puppies were found from his possession.

Bunty used to stay in an apartment in Mayur Vihar and neighbours were of the idea that he was a big businessman. Fluent in English, he used to make a fool of others by his good looks and language skills. People would get carried away by his sheer style, making it easy for him to steal things right in front of them.

Bunty once went to a house in Hauz Khas and while he was about to steal a music system, the girl who was present there asked him where he had come from. A clever man that he is, he told her that he was from an electronics company for an exchange offer. The girl was told that he would take away the old music system as her father had kept a new system in the car. By the time she went to check the stereo in the car, he had ran away with it.

In the intervening night of March 15/16, 2001, Bunty had stolen things like fax machine, emergency light, pillows, bed sheets and many other goods from South Patel Nagar. His other major theft was in Panchsheel Park from where he had stolen a television, music system, refrigerator and air conditioner among many other things.

Tomorrow – Part 2: More news clippings and detail execution plans of a few of his robberies

    Bunty is a great man!
He did everything so confidently and he did not feel ashamed of what he was doing.
He in a way had O.C.D- Obsessive compulsive disorder.
He used to take anything that would come in his way. May it be family pictures, teddy bears or even a television.
The one mistake he made was that he stayed at a specific location. He should have kept changing his locations.
The best part about him was the way he used to flee away from the police stations. Simply amazing.

I really do respect you Bunty, sir…:)
