  2. Paa is a rare film.

Director R Balki, who spoke briefly about his film prior to the media screening offered the audience to walk out if they found the opening credits (read out by Jaya Bachchan in schoolgirl fashion) too long to sit through, but Jaya’s brief appearance, coupled with her child-like enthusiasm set the tone for a film that had us lean back in our seats and marvel at the chuckle inducing illusion of it all.

Anyone who has moving fingers that can type on Google, should not read this as a spoiler that what we can know about Progeria in an instance will brace us for what to expect of the film Paa. But that should not deter us from entering the world of Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) who is born with the rare disease to a gynecologist single mother Vidya (Vidya Balan) who in turn has chosen to give birth to her love child of Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan) from a hurried romance in London, where he’s pursuing Political Science for a career in Politics and she would have been happy settling down with him, which he is not ready for. They fall apart, in a classic set-up of a 14 year banwaas from each other, to be re-united by Auro’s fate.

When 13 year old Auro is introduced in the beginning; with his uncommon gait, his uneven teeth, his distinct appearance, his school friends jubilantly cheer for him to collect his trophy on stage for a feat he has accomplished and show them his famous Auro clown dance, which he does throughout the film, not needing much push to show-off. That is how Auro is in the film, a bit of an exhibitionist, supported by all and sundry in good humour. Amitabh Bachchan is perfect for the role of Auro, and lends to the character his personal trait of a child man, constantly in quest of unraveling something new everyday, his energy is inexhaustible. Where are the heroes of his age?

Paa being an AB Corp film, how could the Bachchans not take potshots at the media? In an unnecessary sub-plot that is forcefully hot-ironed into the film where an honest to goodness rising politician (are there any?) Amol Arte takes on yellow journalism in his crisp white kurtas and polite tongue, the pithy commentary on media is going to be a crowd-pleaser but is lost on an assemblage of media minions in a screening room where we are lectured on the responsibility of power. Who but politicians could know better! Media houses are called Black & White News and Sach News (as if news could be Jhooth) when Amol Arte lands on prime-time Doordarshan to expose the ‘necessary evil’ of our times, the fourth estate, instead of taking on another neta who is trying to jeopardize his plans for a slum redevelopment project.

The film tends to lose focus when it aims its camera on anything else but Auro. It is his world we are interested in, where he chases his grandma Arundhati Nag around her kitchen, affectionately calling her ‘Bum’ for her big matronly derriere. It is his tender attention to mother Vidya’s sacrifices for him. His hilarious conversation with best buddy Vishnu (a kid called Pratik who has some of the most rib tickling lines in the film). It is Auro’s back-ride on Paa Abhishek that we get moist-eyed about. His potty humour, conversations with King Kong, running away from girls – all this makes the film such a tricky treat – knowing what the climax holds for us. But far from being a tear-jerker in the end, the startling denouement revitalizes the film with joy and hope.

Amitabh Bachchan is an actor who should be exonerated from any more praise. In such a role reversal, Abhishek Bachchan who is given the time- turned fortune to play dad to his father, what better compliment? If Amitabh has ever chided his son at home for not listening to him, “You would understand if only you were in my shoes,” now Abhishek knows the feeling. This is Abhishek’s most subtle and mature performance yet, he is his father’s son.

Somewhere in the film the unbelievably loveable grandma Arundhati Nag speaks to Amol who wants to reconcile with her daughter Vidya, “Ek aurat jab akele apne bacche ko paalti hai, uska dil sakht ho jaata hai, narm sirf apne bacche ke liye.” That very aspect of a ‘sakht par narm dil’ woman Vidya remarkably fetches out from her inner strength – in a restrained performance where we are often stunned by ‘thairaav’, her’s is a superb return to form in Paa.

The cast of the film, including Paresh Rawal in a small and apt role, is well placed. Ilaiyaraaja’s tunes are fittingly shoehorned into the film in equal music as the pace. Full marks for clever camerawork, make-up, and the ad-style zippy editing in places. Balki did not set out to make a Lorenzo’s Oil; he did not want to cloud Auro’s thoughts with morbid fears and like Cheeni Kum, showed us children who can teach adults some of the most life-affirming lessons in life.

In the end, we hard-nosed cynical people – media wallahs stood up and clapped. Rare applause for a rare film.

5 stars are too many for any movie I think. But today I opened PFC and user ratings has paa – 5 stars, radio 4.5 stars…. is it that these two are gems and released on same day or is it that our expectations after kurbaan, de dhana dhan , blue have come down so much that any average movie gets exaggerated ratings. Which one is true? I am going with the later.

good watch, there is some ‘Saath Phere’ cooked up in between and allowed to boil towards the end, but otherwise its neat..
All the actors have performed well enough… it has some funny and well written lines..
There is serious lack of credibility in premise and settings, sometimes utopian, some scenes looks like they are inspired from Nayak:The Real Hero…some others are very loose.. if I go further, it would end up being spoilers.. a decent film, definitely worth a watch , a better one amongst all those which get released every Friday..

    shadanmd shadanmd says:

Watching a movie first day is the most cherished feeling which is difficult to explain in a few words. When I was entering to watch Paa (one of the most awaited movie of the year), there were many 7-8 years old children dressed in cute winter wear running up and down the stair case doing the monkey . Starting of the movie, for me was one of the highlights of the movie which actually sets the tone of the movie. Jaya bhachan in her child –like very adorable natural self introducing the entire casting was a pleasure.
The movie starts with the new age politician Amol Arte (Abhisheik Bachchan) attending the award ceremony of a school where he meets Auro (Amitab Bachchan) ,a 13 years old child who suffers from a genetic disease called Progeria ( where the body grows 5 times faster than the actual age).Auro introduces himself with the monkey dance on the stage ,and along with him all the kids in the theatre joined him.Needless to say everyone had already entered into Auro’s world. There is an instant emotional connect between him and the audience . Auro, ,lives with his single mother “mum” aka Vidya (vidya balan) and “bum” aka grand mother (Arundhati Nag) .He makes her “bum” runs in the kitchen, throws tantrum at his mom ,converses with king kong, has a portrait of Jackie Chang in his room, has a warning at the entrance of his door which reads “knock or else I would knock you off).He is super confident, intelligent, wity ,humorous ,popular and lovable among his friends and runs away from girls. His friends are as cute as he is and deliver to perfection. The movie goes deeper into the life of Auro in the second half where he finds out about his father who didn’t want to have him in order to fulfil his career as a successful politician, and how his dying fate reunites his parents. And in the process develops a relationship with his father.
Script writer and director R.Balki shoud be applauded for a crisp script and doing justice to it. As earlier with the director ‘s last outing the script, the dialogues, the background score, performance of the lead actors, editing are to perfection. A special mention should be made of the witty one liners throughout the movie…Trust me you would love them.
Coming to performances, mention should be made of Arundhunti Nag who is simple amazing in the role of grandmother. She looks so natural in the role and you actually feel the warmth she oozes so effortlessly. She is brilliant in the movie. This has to be the best performance of Vidya Balan after Parineta, though her role is not itched out well yet she delivers a very mature performance. Her performance can be aptly be summed up by Arundhunti Nag when she says , “Ek aurat jab akele apne bacche ko paalti hai, uska dil sakht ho jaata hai, narm sirf apne bacche ke liye.” That very aspect of a ‘sakht par narm dil’ woman Vidya remarkably fetches out from her inner strength. Abhishek in the role of a enthusiastic, corrupt free , young politician does justice to the role. This has to be AB juniors most subtle and mature performance after Guru. You can see the AB junior maturing as an actor. Now finally, AB senior,….well AB senior has reached a crescendo where he does not require any praises. He is just perfect as always. The potty humour of Auro, the one liners, just name the scene and Auro is brilliant. Especially the scene between him and his friend where he Auro asks him about the similarities between him and his dad,or the one where he makes his grandmother run after him,or even where he meets his dad and ofcourse the last scene, he is brilliant. Though it is not his best performance, but it is one of his best performances. The best part was he let audience fall in love with Auro and his aura takes the backstage. Thats the hallmark of a great actor, allowing the character to grow and keeping d actor’s personal charisma backstage. A small mention should be made of Pratik, a young child actor (friend of Auro) who has some of the most rib tickling lines in the movie.
So where does the movie miss out??At times the movie threatens to fall apart but somehow the actors manages to hold on the script together. Like the director’s last outing Chinnekum, where inspite of a good script the movie failed because it failed to create an emotional connection with the audience .However in this movie, its Auro’s world tat creates the emotional connect with the audience. As soon as the story deviates from Auro’s life, goes into the sub plot of the moral role of the media should play, or the young educated politician wanting to change India, the story seems to fall out.
The background score gells well with the script and none of the songs looks out of place. the camera work is clean and smart and editing, sound recording and make up are top notch.
An applaud to the chemistry shared by the son-father duo of Bachans. Whenever they were on screen, audience were glued to their seats. They both completed each other effortless as if playing their real life ,just that the roles were reversed. The last scene was the most touching scene of the movie, where a dying Auro reunites his “maa” and “paa” and gets his rightful identity of a son and not being a basterd. Interestingly, the word “paa” is uttered by Auro only once in the movie and its the last word of the movie. It not a great movie but its a movie which should be watched and the movie wont disappoint you. Watch it with ur maa, paa, bum (grandmother) and friends, and enjoy the monkey dance.

Great movie and Outstanding performance from AB! Even for a moment you won’t think it’s not the kid but somebody else. This is called slipping into a role (as opposed to making a role as per the actors personality). I found the dialog quite witty and the whole hall was laughing along with them. While Big B is incomparable, Bidya Balan was brilliant, Abhishek pretty good and the kid doing Vishnu’s role really good as well. Arundhati Nag and Paresh Rawal shine in their role as well! Best thing is that movie is not over the top and has been shown an intelligent 13 year old. Balki’s study of child psychology seems to have worked.

R. Blaki has once again prove himself after Chini kum. The only problem I have with Paa is that it is bit slow sometimes and editing could have been better specially showing political career of Abhishek… Paa is different experiance and deserves a warm reception… :)

Paa is a wonderful film which makes you laugh and also tugs at your heart.Wonderful casting indeed- Big B is Auro and literally lives the character.Vidya Balan’s role reminds us that here is a talent that given the right roles can do wonders.Abhishek is earnest as well.Arundhati Nag, Paresh Rawal and the kid Pratik are fine too.

Ilayaraja’s music & BGM – truly soothing, dialogues are witty & interesting. This is a movie which is certainly a lot, lot better than most of the movies coming out these days.Go for it.

Paa is good. As everybody said already, AB’s character as Auro is the most entertaining part. AB’s body language as a kid is amazing. Vidya, Abhishek and the child actor also very good in their roles. If you are not expecting an intense, unpredictable story with lots of ups and downs, then you can go for this movie for its simplicity, witty dialogues, and acting. The story is simple and is told in a simplistic way, although some people may call it a weak point, but the simplicity of the story let us focus on emotions in relationships, witty dialogues between Auro with his friend, his Paa, Maa and grandmaa. And yes, music is good too.

The media-politics episode is a little distraction in the movie, don’t know why it is there. Another thing is under utilization of Paresh Rawal, in my opinion, he didnt get enough opportunity to show his talent.

I wanted to give 3.5/5 to this movie, but that is not an option, so I give it 3 stars. 4 is little too much.

Wonderful movie. Reminded me in some ways of the kind of cinema Mahendran/Balu Mahendra used to make in the 80′s and early 90′s, personal, moving and soothing. Loved the scenes between Auro, his mom and Grandma, and later between Auro and his Dad. The movie worked really well because of the way Balki depicted the relationships well, in fact the very reason i liked Cheeni Kum too.

One of AB’s best performances this decade, right up there with Black, Viruddh, Sarkaar, Khakee.

Vidya Balan has that old world charm, and coupled with some solid acting talent, its a pleasure to see her on screen. And yes a welcome break from the Barbie dolls flitting the screen.

AB Jr does well, though for me his Rahul Gandhi style principled political leader, seemed a bit too contrived. Also the media bashing and that slum redevelopment stuff, did not really gel in well with the movie.

And kudos to Arundhati Nag, as Auro’s grandma in a natural, effortless performance.

Illayaraja’s tunes, though mostly reworked from his older songs are easy on the ear, and P.C.Sreeram once again shows his class.

All in all, worth a watch.

Note: This review is very long but good enough( jus like Director Gowariker i need more space to express everything)
my other reviews af facebook: firday fever

Lets forget the resemblance of Benjamin Button face with Auro, and someone said resmeblance of story with the movie “Jack” Robin willams(i didnt see this movie).

Each character in this movie touches you. and Auro is Sho shweet..now you know why AB is AB. I bow myslef for this performance, I feel that all his characters all this years are one Side, and this one character would be other side of Balancing machine, greatest ever performance!!

The movie not just touches the audience, it actually hugs tightly!!(jaddo ki jhappi) :)

I dont want to talk about the story like always, as by now everyone has known the story.
funny side is before release of the movie msn website had a title “How AB shrunk” and there was 5 page article, but it was nothing to do with AB nor the movie, it has to do with the disease.(cashing on AB) :)

so what do we get out of PAA-Sho Shweet like i said in title of this review. Aura though suffering from rare disease, but he is very intelligent and he displays that with his spontaeous humor, Kudos to Balki for adding the humour to this character, else it would be boring and AB like always elevated the character.
You never fell that its AB that is the greatness of AB and the makeup ofcourse. but AB leaves his trade mark expression:
    1. When he(i mean any character of AB in any movie) Gets angry, Genreally he stares strongly for couple of seconds and then jus turns away instantly.
Thats a wise men way or should i say legendary way of showing angry -Telling you strongly but silently that iam angry on you and leaving.

so even Auro does that in one scene, where he would pack up everything and waiting for the car to pick him to go to delhi and when he peeps into window thinking the car has come, realises that its not for him, that shot you will see the trademark AB anger and disappointment.

You will realise its AB in scenes where they show his eyes expression.

its the spontaneous humor, naughty ness of Auro, the way AB says it. makes you laugh your heart out!

LOL moments with Auro(which i can remember as its been over a week i watched this movie) :

LOL-1>>: In 3rd scene(if iam right on the number) of the movie, where he is angry on Abhishiek ‘cos of all the media attention he bought, the way Auro releases his angry by walking here and there murmuring..!

LOL-2>>When Abhishek asks what does your parents do

LOL-3>>Auro and his friends conversation on phone about the similarites about his friend and his Dad(You will get cramps in your stomach by laughing)

LOL-3>>Auro-Abhishiek in train and the water bomb story

LOL-4>>When paresh rawal comes to see Auro towards the end of the movie and Auro says, Samay kam hai- and paresh rawal says no we have lot of time, then the answer of Auro= this one is utlimate -Laugh your heart out- moment in the movie. like i said kudos to Balki, and AB for creating the spontaneous humour, great timing. we never feel like its made up.

Now lets talk about Viday balan-The creator of Auro in movie : I dont think anyone else would have been done justice to this character except Vidya Balan. She has given excellent performance as the true woman of india, right from the girl friend character to mother, her character shows how great a

True indian woman is,specially the last episode is intersting, where she displays years of suffering, her anger with silence, i dont want to call it as anger but its the kind of love-filled anger. its not easy for single mother to take care of kid like Auro.

The Genious director shows that suffering in one scene, what she has gone through i.e when Auro plays in park and someone comes and ask is it your son, what happend to him, you should see what VB explains, Thats true mother!

Iam sure lot of woman who went through similar situations in their life would instantly connected to this character, and that is purely because of VB’s performance not to forget Balki the director.

    Slap like Dialogues from VB:
1> When she calls Abhishiek and tells your problem is solved, no troubles for you(this is what i say true indian woman, unconditional love, god are they only in movies, or do we have these kind in real life, if so pls let me know :)

2>Towards the end of movie when Abhishiek says with great happiness -he is my son- then the response from VB Brutal slap on face, infact its slap on all the men who relates to Abhi’s character in the movie.. Ph..atak!!

Abhishiek Bachhan : The son of the father, who plays the father of the son(auro) in this movie. Decent performance The acting, character all are like tailor made, nothing extra, nothing short jus perfect fit.

Like most men this character has his career plans, very smart young, handsome politician who chases his dream all through the movie and realises where is the real happiness. which is not in the white kurtas and Honda CRVs

Slapp like moments and Dailogues from this character :
1>>When he show cases his show in doordarshan-its slapped on media who instead of being responsible are playing with society for the sake of their TRP ratings.
2>>When Media asks him in parking lot about VB’s affair the answer he gives.

Presh Rawal : he is the best, give him anything!

The mother in-law character- jus like real life M-In-law, played very well. she is like a candle light.

Music: Melody king he is-Illayraja he is legend…! Then, Now and forever, jus listen to the song -Udhi Udhi- tell me who else can compose a melody song with classic rock elements.. jus like wine gets better as it ages so is he. lesson to all the wannabe rock bands- if you want to create history in music first create a melody…!

Director- Balki-Like it said you dont have to be louder to be heard. This is my 1 1/2 movie from this director i watched chinni kaam half only for some reasons.
I have to say that Balki actually brings out the -Real- Natural- Amitabh in his movies, i dont know how but iam sure he knows amitabh almost like Amitabh knows about him self.

The director has very his own way story telling which is real, simple and straight(hard to find these days). just 2-3 characters in chinni kam and around 6 characters in Paa- he manged to touch audience that shows his excellence of his skills and proves that content is king. Its perfect every inch of the movie is perfectly tailor made and it shows.

Finally Jaya bachan- well she is actually the beging of the movie, well I guess most of them know that this was last minute addition, As AB family wants JB to be associated to this movie and our Genious director got inspired from some movie and implemented the movie credits presentation with Jaya Bachan.

This is nice, but it would have much better, Basic flaw is editing. Editing was so silly it looked some fresher was doing the editing. Given the fact that JB can’t remember all names and There would be retakes, Editing would have been taken care very very well which isn’t done.
Also the scene changes would have been take care, placement of JB from one place to another would also been taken care so that it looked like its continuous, but it looked like – lets jus finish it up and print!(good try- would have been better)

Adding Turbo charger to movie : its my feeling that It would be Even more memorable and it would like a turbo charger to movie, if Auro’s disease would been just like the way Benajamin’s Disease in the movie Curious case of Benjamin.

which is physically he looks younger as he grows. but he would be aging. like at 13 you look 50 and at 50 you look 13. so at the end of the movie AB would be looking like 13 or 20 years old young guy. so it would have been great. if it made like that. just my thoughts- Udhi Udhi- :)

Verdict : Dont miss it-you will LOL, you will Cry -O-L you will Love-O-L!!

Can I give it 0 stars please? Bad movie. I couldn’t believe that a half-baked movie like this one is being hailed as good. Puhleeeeaaaazzzzeee… It’s like a pot was put on the stove and a bunch of ingredients were thrown in, but someone forgot to turn on the flame- so under-cooked, all these different flavours and ingredients that did not mix at all! Bad bad bad bad bad……

Paa in not greatest movie in big b’s career , but all said, within a budget of 15 crore they have made a movie which is much better than trash like Blue or KI which are made around 60 to 100 crores.

Big b as usual steals the show.Paresh Rawal was wasted.
Ilayaraja music was excellent, even they were lift off from his own Malayalam Songs.

Why do we bring budget of the movie when reviewing a movie, I dont understand. One can make a good movie out of a small budget and a total disaster with collosal budgets, as you point out. A movie’s budget is its producer’s problem. I dont want to know how much money he has put especially when I shelve out the same amount everytime irrespective of the movie’s budget.

Well said… The budget should be in line with the requirement of the movie, and if the movie is going to the dogs because they can’t cough up the money needed to make it right, it is really a failing on the maker’s part- cannot be used as an excuse. And I also agree about scores of small budget movies that are so well made.

AB looks unbelievable, even after the movie, i had doubts if there was amitabh. Amazing stuff there. But the movie, in my view, was missing something important – a plot!

It felt so disconnected..2/3s in the movie, i was not sure where is this going..

The father-son chemistry was half-baked..the unwed mother angle..not sure if there was a message to the masses there…the politician drama was totally unnecessary and added no value…the ending was downright ‘filmy’…

Net – I came out appreciating Vidya’s understated acting, but felt let down by the movie.
