PaAdlabs

They fart more than a cow! The smell is so vicious that it will directly go into your brain and pop all your nerves that you would not know what hit you! We know that we Indians have a freedom to fart or piss openly in public, but PaAdlabs are farting and pissing on their own work or investment! Have they gone insane?! They clearly have gone insane by not releasing ‘Johnny Gaddaar’ in UK. Why has that irked me a lot? Well, because a geezar (Pranab Kapadia) from PaAdlabs UK, speaking to IndiaFM, cited the reasons for the move as

The holy month of Ramzan has hit film business hard. The Pakistani audience, which forms a large percentage of film-going audience in U.K., stays away from movies in Ramzan. As a result, the business hits an all-time low. Instead of ruining the business prospects of JOHNNY GADDAAR, we decided against releasing the film in theatres. Besides, the adult certificate will also keep the kids away, so why take the risk?

How lame is that! Where are the figures? How can he say that UK Indian film audience is made of more British Pakistanis than British Indians? Fair enough, if British Pakistani audience would have stayed away from the cinema during the month, but what about the British Indian audience? I thought the film is an Indian film, no? Would not British Indians be interested in the film? And why are you releasing the film in India – did you guys not look at that India also celebrates Ramzan, so a percentage of population will stay away from the cinema? But they would say, ‘more people would go to cinema than stay away from cinema, in India.’ That would be the likely case in UK as well.

Let’s look at the percentage of British Indian population and British Pakistani population. Currently UK’s population is 60,776,238 (2007); and 1.8% of that figure are British Indians and 1.3% of that figure are British Pakistanis (2001 census) (Link). You can clearly see there are more British Indians than British Pakistani in UK. And recently the boom of Indian ITians demand in UK would have increased the British Indian population. Also, we should not forget the Indian students studying in UK. That would mean that British Indian audience would be more than British Pakistani audience, no? So PaAdlabs still would have a big audience to target, if we entirely exclude the British Pakistani audience. You guys still would have made a good business.

Now if they had done their research – a proper research, then they would have found that Dharemndra has a big following in UK. The Punjabi factor – have they overlooked that aspect? Dharmendra has a huge fan group base in UK. Not just oldies, but young’un also have a great deal of respect for Dharmendra. If that research was too demanding for them, then they should have had at least a bit of common sense to see that ‘Apne’ was hit in UK because of Dharmendra paaji. Leeds, Birmingham, Southall (London) are predominately Punjabi area. So release the film in those cities and you are bound to get people in the cinema.

How on earth is Johnny Gaddaar an adult film? I have not seen the film, but Johnny Gaddaar an adult film? Beats Me! Johnny Gaddaar would be seen as a kids’ film if you compare to ‘Hey Baby’ – a sex comedy, which was classified or promoted as a family movie. There is something wrong. If a family can watch ‘Hey Baby’ together, then why would they have any objections at watching ‘Johnny Gaddar’ together?! Besides, only family people go to cinema in UK? What about the people between 20-30 – age group or other groups, don’t they watch films? Would not they go to cinema with their ‘family’? Would not the kids stay away from the film in India? So that means family won’t come to the cinema? So why are you releasing film in India or producing the film in the first place? Or the kids and family in India are more open-minded and have rights to watch adult films together, where as Indian in UK are backwards?

And yes, Johnny Gaddaar is not a kids’ movie, so why on earth would you target at kids?! Do you think film audience is only made of Kids? The film targets the other type of audience, so you should target those audience rather than coming up with lame reasons.

PaAdlabs are taking far more risks by not releasing the film in UK. Because many people in UK are likely to see the film on pirated DVDs and if they like it, then whose loss is it?! Many people in UK have watched ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ and have liked it a lot so if they knew ‘Johnny Gaddaar’ was from the same director, then it would have attracted people to the cinema. Then there is that Hard ‘Yeah’ Kaur song, which would have made people notice about the movie in UK. There are so many factors, which would have brought people to the cinema, but PaAdlabs spent more time farting.

You gotta believe in your product and there is always a big enough audience to recover the cost and a profit, so just need to market it to them. And if the product is good, then it will be a winner as long as you sell it to the people. It won’t make any money if you just keep it in yer lab.

what i hate is the reasons they come up with, which are so ridiculous. if they had said we cannot afford to release the film in overseas and are looking for overseas distributors, then i’d have been fine with that, but no, they wanna come up with some pathetic excuses.

they just don’t want to do it. they have the money, resources, and everything. but still….

Honhaar, you see this is the way it is – Nobody outside this forum knows much about Johnny and are not even interested – The only way they could have marketed it in the West is as an international arthouse film – Too much hassle and has to live up to the best thrillers in the world. It can’t be marketed as a Bollywood film as it has no starcast except for Dharam Paji and Rimi Sen, who won’t even attract moths to the screen. I think they did a smart thing in protecting their profits. Let it grow first through word of mouth in India and then they can release it for the Desis, or else have an online release as well.
I feel Manorama too should have been release in only 1 multiplex in the 6-8 major cities and allowed to grow, but then it wasn’t even a great movie

Gurpreet, It would have worked if they had target/marketed the film, to the age group 18-40, the Dharmendra Paji fans. There are so many easy hassle free ways to market the film, which they did not opt for. It is about marketing and selling the product to audience, which Indian Film industry lacks, cos they only believe a star or a family movie sells.

“Nobody outside this forum knows much about Johnny and are not even interested”

Because they have not marketed. They could have used the UK based singers song from the soundtrack, to get the public notice about the film. They could have got Dharmendra pajji on some of the radio shows/ tv channels to promote the movie. They could have done a lot of things to create the hype, to attract the public. And then rest of it depends on the quality of the film.

And if they are planning to release the film after seeing how the movie fares in India, then by that time people would have seen the film on pirated dvds, so they would have loss money. (By the way, where did you see Manorama Six Feet Under?)

yes, i would not have minded if they had released the film in limited theaters.

Honharr Paaji fans???? In the 18-40 agre group – Oh yes pardon me – I know both of them in Southhall. Which world are you living in?? Next you’ll say we can market Dev Anand to the 14 – 106 age group in Russia.
The only way this film can be marketed is by hyping something in the content that has never been seen before and by hyping the “new hot guy”. A tough ask if you ask me – even the posters look lame, and the promos look like a C-grade thriller, although I do have hopes for the film. And so mark my words its not gonna get a great opening in India either.
I saw Manorama in Mumbai before my flight out of Sahar and it put me in a foul mood throughout the flight.

Honhar, 18-40 or 50 is too wide and in the 18-30 age group he has no fans – he’s past his drawing the audience because I’m in it period. In fact having him in the movie gives it a not so cool, B-grade feel for the common audience. Apne worked because it had both his sons and two top heroines and a HUGE marketing budget, but most of the other films he’s been associated with over the past two decades have been really F-grade
Like I said, the promos shouldn’t just show the faces of random actors and Rimi Sen, but should be slicker and have a definite this is ultra violent theme
Don’t like the poster either – looks like another B thriller.

Now, you can say I’m being negative or irritating and my comments are worthless, but this is what an outside viewer not in the film industry but who loves world cinema thinks when he sees the promos and posters of Johhny G – only I have inside info that its great from here…. the others don’t.

From the few postings that I read, Gurpreet made perfect sense to me even though there are things that I disagreed with him on. Even though he was passionate about what he said, never indulged in personal attacks – did he? I am not sure that the IP address logic is correct either – I can remote log in to a computer anywhere in the world and use that desktop to do anything I want. I will get that IP address. Besides, one can use web proxies. It can be done many different ways if that’s what one chooses to do.
