Paighaam Laayaa Saawan: Songs From the Heavens
Amanda Sodhi | Movies, Talking-Points | May 1, 2009 at 6:04 am
I’ve always loved the rains. Always. And somehow the rains seem to follow me wherever I go outside of the US. As a kid, I’d enjoy walks in the neighborhood while it was pouring outside, and even now as an adult I like to avoid carrying an umbrella even when I know it’s going to rain. Oh I’ve got PLENTY of umbrellas, all right. Baat woh nahin hai. Lekin baarish kaa lutf toh uthaanaa hi chaahiye naa? No, no, fikr not, this post isn’t about my baarish-related dastaans. It just so happens that it’s raining here in DC right now, and as I look out the window at the blanket of raindrops covering nearby surroundings, my mind can’t help but drift to the following upbeat rain songs…
*Paighaam Laayaa Saawan (Lakeer) is one of my favorite baarish-songs. One of the main reasons is probably because I really enjoy listening to Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam’s refreshing voice :-) Shaan also sounds really amazing in this song. The sound of the wind, the triangle-type instrument, the softness of the composition…it’s all just so intoxicating. But, what I especially love about this duet is Mehboob Khan’s lyrics. (I’ve memorized the entire song by now. lol!)
Paighaam laayaa saawan,
Daaman se bandh jaaye daaman,
Rim jhim khushiyon ki barse hum pe barkhaa.
Chanchal hawaa yeh boli,
Sajne de teri doli,
Doli phir dole jaise dole chandaa.
Jee kartaa hai pankh lagaa ke udd jaaoon main,
Neel gagan ko baadal ban ke choo jaaoon main…
Barkha, pawan, yeh boondein,
Sab ne udaa di neendein,
Jaagi aankhon mein meri jaagaa sapnaa.
Mannwaa meraa bhi dole,
Haule, haule yeh bole,
Begaani duniyaa mein hai tu hi apnaa.
Jee kartaa hai pankh lagaa ke udd jaaoon main,
Neel gagan ke baadal tujh mein chup jaoon main…
Saagar kinaare kisi parbat ke saaye mein, Dikhtaa hai ek aashiyaanaa.
Hai jaan jab tak main rahoon tere dil mein hi, Vahi hai meraa aashiyaanaa.
Maasoom hai baatein aisi,
Phoolon pe ho shabnam jaisi,
Main khil saa gayaa,
Mehek uthaa jag saaraa…
Shaakhon pe jhoolaa jhoolein nayi naveli yeh kaliyaan,
Teri baahon mein jhoolen hum.
Chaahat kaa mausam aayaa,
Tanhaayi sang laayaa,
Madhosh hai aaj hum.
Madhhoshi ab naa toote,
Daaman yeh teraa naa choote,
Hai sang teraa, rang teraa, meraa kyaa?
*Cham Se Koodi Baarish Aayi (Via Darjeeling) is a really fun and sweet uchchallo-koodhoh-enjoy-the-rain type song. Chitra sounds like she’s having loads of fun while singing this Prabuddha Banerjee composition–her voice is so expressive! Mrityunjay Kumar Singh pens down some interesting lines–
Ghar mein bajti dhun ko sun kar, cham se kudi baarish aayi.
Aur hai kohare ki woh chaadar, khidkiyon pe khadi muskaayi.
Ghar mein bajti dhun ko sun kar, cham se kudi baarish aayi.
Hai hawaa ke sang uddti kuch phuhaarein titleeyon si,
Aake baithi mere dar pe jaise woh kuch kehne aayi.
Sard raaton mein thithak kar, baithe baahar raaston par,
Poochti hai aate jaate, logo se yeh kuch ghabraaye.
Baadalon mein kho chuki kuch, gaal par rakh kar hatheli,
Apni hi boondon ki ladiyon mein khadi hai woh akeli.
Bheegaa tan hai, nam hain aankhein, phir bhi hasti, khilkhilaake,
Mere ghar mein, haste gaate, jaise hai woh rehne aayaa.
Oye! Baarish aayi oye!!! (and, no, that was not part of the song. he he)
*Jhoothi Moothi (Rudaali) is a really powerful composition by Bhupen Hazarika. There’s something quite appealing about classical and semi-classical compositions…Lata Mangeshkar sounds great (actually, perhaps even great is an understatement) and Gulzar’s lyrics are thoughtful. Dimple looks so carefree and overjoyed in this song, thoroughly relishing the rains.
*I absolutely adore the film Lamhe and all the songs including Megha Re Megha. I like the Rajasthani touch to the song (music director: Shiv-Hari) and the vocals by Ila Arun and Lata Mangeshkar. Ila Arun has a deep and distinct voice hard to ignore. I also love Anand Bakshi’s lyrics–the ched-chaad between the saheliyaan…in short, the celebration of rain!
*Lapak Jhapak (Boot Polish) is an OUTSTANDING classical composition by Shankar-Jaikishan sung by Manna Dey with playful lyrics by Shailendra. Definitely check out the video to this song (and, if possible, check out the entire film!).
*Laagaa Re Jal Laagaa (Paheli), sung by Sonu Nigam, Shruti Sadolikar and M.M. Kreem is another classical composition about the rain. I’ve always admired Gulzar and known that he is immensely talented. Phir bhi, while I was transcribing the lyrics to this song I was just left speechless…
Laagaa re jal laagaa, barsaa re jal barsaa,
Chavi ki godh bhari, re laagi hari,
Kalsi bhari aur taal bhare guddiyaa ke nainaa.
Paat paat ki baat baat par, jhool jhool kar phool bajaave taaliyaan,
Ber ber maati kaa dher bole sabur, khole saver ki laaliyaan.
Dhan hai, dhan hai, jal janmaa hai,
Maati ke badan se ek aur pal janmaa hai,
Samay ki ghurni se nayaa kal janmaa hai,
Pal janmaa, re jal janmnaa,
Dekh bhaal-kar, aaj kaal par laagaa re laagaa,
Laagaa re jal laagaa…Barsaa re jal barsaa…
Palkon mein soyaa huaa oas kaa daanaa thaa, piyaa,
Woh teraa nahin meraa sapnaa thaa anjaanaa saa, piyaa.
Jaago, piyaa, sapnaa jaagaa,
Tere naino mei soyaa thaa, sapnaa jaagaa,
Tere naino mei soyaa samay jaagaa hai!
Waah! Kyaa lyrics hai yaar!
*Sukhwinder Singh rocks! Why am I having this tareef kaa outburst suddenly? Well, I was listening to Rabba Rabba Mee Barsaa (Monsoon Wedding) again and kyaa mast gaataa hai Sukhi–just listen to the alaaps at the end of this song. Wow. Wow!! In fact, not just singing–he also does a great job with composing this song. His voice and the lyrics convey a feeling of ecstasy–
Rabba, rabba mee barsaa, saddi kotthi daane paa,
Kaavaa, kaavaa, kaavaa…
Aj meraa jee kardaa, main udd jaa naale hawaawaan,
Ki meri kismat ne, ki meri kismat ne kar ditiyaan thandiyaan chaavaan,
Ki aj meraa, ki aj meraa jee kardaa main udd jaa naal hawaawaan!
Such an overflow of emotions!!!
*Is my list over yet? Naa re, naa re, naa naa naa naa, naa re! Rahman’s Barso Re (Guru) is another beautiful song about the rain and Shreya Ghoshal sounds rather carefree. Even the video of this song is awesome, full of rich visuals! Gulzar conjures up a village setting with words like, “geeli maati ke chal gharonde banaayenge re,” “hal jote sab ne,” and “bailon ki ghanti baji.” I also like how the song refers to the actual feeling of the rain as being “kosaa.”
*Time to go back a few years to Lata Mangeshkar and Kumar Sanu’s rain duet, Dekho Zara Dekho (Yeh Dillagi). Loved the percussion beats, the funky trombones, and the choreography to this Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen composition. Just look at the way Akshay dances in this song, especially at the beginning! If only Sameer would continue to write lyrics with substance as he has for this song–
Dekho zaraa dekho barkhaa ki chaddi,
Tan ko bhigoye boondon ki laddi,
Mausam suhaanaa hai, kyaa aashiqaanaa hai,
Baj ne lagi hai tik tik dil ki ghaddi!
*Ab kuch saal peeche chale hi gaye hai phir se, toh might as well bring up Chatri Naa Khol (Gopi Kishen). I’m neither fond of this song anymore nor am I too impressed with Kumar Sanu and Poornimaa’s singing in this song either, but I do remember initially enjoying this track by Anand Chitragupt and Milind Chitragupt many, many years back.
*Here’s another blissful duet, this time rendered by Kumar Sanu and Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam, and composed by none other than RD Burman: Rim Jhim Rim Jhim (1942 A Love Story). Javed Akhtar’s lyrics are so extremely romantic–just check out these lines:
Boondoon ki yeh jaddi,
Laayi hai woh ghaddi,
Jis ke liye hum tarse.
Baadal ki chaadrein, oddhe hain vaadiyaan, saari dishaayein soyi hain,
Sapno ke gaaon mein, bheegi si chaaon mein, do aatmaaein khoyi hain.
Raahein dhuaan dhuaan,
Jaayeingein hum kahaan?
Aao yahin reh jaayein!
*Also composed by RD Burman, Rim Jhim Gire Saawan (Manzil) is so melodious. I especially like lyricist Yogesh’s use of the phrase, “ghungru si bajti hain boondein” and the way Kishore Kumar stretches out the word “agan.”
Rim jhim ghire saawan,
Sulagh sulagh jaaye mann,
Bheegein aaj iss mausam mein,
Lagi kaisi yeh agan?
*Okay, okay, fine. Zaraa Zaraa (Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein) isn’t really a song about the rain. But these lines by Sameer are so sweet–
Yun hi baras baras kaali ghataa barse,
Hum yaar bheeg jaayein, iss chaahat ki baarish mein.
Meri khuli khuli latton ko suljhaaye, tu apni ungaliyon se,
Main toh hoon isi khwaaish mein.
And, of course, Bombay Jayshree’s deep voice sounds fabulous–her voice sounds so full of longing in this song. I like how music director Harris Jayraj uses the flutes and soft percussion arrangements and maintains a slow pace throughout the song…
*There’s definitely an addictive quality to Shankar-Jaikishan’s Barsaat Mein Hum Se Mile Tum Sanam, Tum Se Mile Hum, Barsaat Mein (Barsaat). One could go on and on and on singing a cover version that line written by Shailendra :-) Of course, Lata Mangeshkar does it best.
*One of my absolute favorite baarish songs has got to be A R Rahman’s Boondon Se Baatein (Thakshak). The song has this haunting feel with Sujata Trivedi whispering “rim jhim rim jhim.” I wish there was more information about lyricist Mehboob Khan–songs about the rain seem to be his forte as even Paighaam Laayaa from Lakeer is written by him.
Bheegi, bheegi, bheegi,
Jaadoo bhari,
Lamhon ki yeh raatein,
Dekho karne lagi hoon,
Main boondon se baatein.
Maine poochaa boondon se,
Sach sach bolo, hai raaz kyaa?
Yun barse ghataa kis gham mein?
Kehne lagi, yeh toh aas hai,
Kisi ki chaah mein khushiyon ki.
Parbat ki deewaani woh,
Barse ghataa mastaani woh,
Mujh pe bhi hai deewaanaapan kisi ka–
Dekho karne lagi hoon main boondon se baatein!
Rim jhim, rim jhim boondein gireen,
Kaise mehek uthaa hai zameen yeh.
Baadal ne chalkaayaa hai pyaar,
Dekho beqaraar zameen pe.
Mujh pe bhi barsaayaa hai,
Mujhko bhi mehkaayaa hai,
Chalkaayaa pyaar kisi ne mujh pe bhi–
Dekho karne lagi hoon main boondon se baatein…
*The juxtaposition of Alka Yagnik’s attitude-filled voice with Adnan Sami Khan’s thick and slightly lethargic toned voice in Baadal (Yuva) is an interesting choice. And, guess who has written lyrics for Rahman for this song? Yup, it’s Mehboob Khan again! (Dude, does anyone have any information about this person?!) The following stanzas are noteworthy since they make some clever observations about things one normally wouldn’t ponder –
Patthar pooje bhi jaaye,
In raahon pe bhi woh mil jaaye.
Yeh dhaagaa hai naazuk, naazuk,
Bandhan phir bhi toh bhaandhaa jaaye.
Saagar mein doobe nadi,
Judaa hai naam, rang wahi.
Zameen par taher jaate hain,
Kisi ke kadmo ke bhi nishaan,
Nishaan woh kabhi bhi naa mitte,
Pade un pe saayaa bhi kisi kaa.
*Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, Kishori Gowarikar–all these singers and just one song: Ghanan Ghanan (Lagaan)! I love how Rahman came up with the innovative idea to use the singer’s chanting “ghanan ghanan” to imitate the sound of the rain arriving. Javed Akthar’s lyrics is loaded with vivid imagery about nature…dharti, baadal, phool, kali, hawaa, etc.–
Prem ki barkhaa mein bheege bheege tan mann,
Dharti pe dekhenge paani kaa darpan.
Jaiyyo tum jahaan jahaan,
Dekhiyo wahaan wahaan,
Yehi ek samaa ki dharti yahaan,
Hai pehne saat rangon ki chunariyaa.
Yeh bijuri ki paayal, yeh baadal kaa aanchal,
Sajaane laayi hai dharti ki dulhan ko.
Daali daali pehnegi phoolon ke kangan,
Sukh ab barsegaa aangan aangan.
Khilegi ab kali kali,
Hansegi ab gali gali.
Hawaa jo chali toh rut lagi bhali,
Jaala de jo tan mann woh dhoop dhali.
*Wow, most of the songs on this list are composed by Rahman, including the Alka Yagnik-Udit Narayan duet Taal Se Taal Milaa–Sukhwinder Singh’s tak-tann-a-na-na-na alaaps in the background, the sound of rain drops falling against the surface…it’s all captivating…
Saawan ne aaj toh, mujh ko bheego diyaa,
Haaye meri laaj ne, mujh ko dooboo diyaa,
Aisi laggi chaddi,
Sochoon main yeh khaddi,
Kuch maine kho diyaa,
Kyaa maine kho diyaa?
Maybe I ought to catch this film again…
*Anaida’s Oonchi Neechi (Chori Chori), composed by Ira Roshan, is a song I suddenly saw one day on this really crummy local Indian show based out of DC. But, I did immediately get hooked onto this song. I liked the folk touch to the composition, Maya Govind’s lyrics, and the way Anaida whispers “zaraa dheere chalo ji.”
Oonchi neechi hai dagariyaa,
Patli hai mori kamariyaa,
Zaraa dheere chalo ji, O baalam dheere chalo ji.
Dekho ji dekho woh pargat ki chaiyyaan,
Baiyyaan pakad ke chalo more saiyyaan,
Kaari badariyaa hai, bijli bhi kadki,
Lage hai darr, Moraa jiyaa ra bhi dhadke…
Zara dheere chalo ji, O balam dheere chalo ji.
*I’m so obsessed with Junoon’s Garaj Baras Saawan Gir Aayo (Deewar & Paap). The guitars, the loud vocals, the distinct pronounciation, the lyrics by Ali Azmat and Sabir Zafar…everything about this song is rocking (pun intended). Everytime I hear this song I feel like dancing regardless of whether it’s even raining or not. lol. I can totally imagine a group of friends stuck in the middle of no where with a flat tire as the rain comes pouring down from the heavens and they all decide to get out and have some fun dancing like crazy while this song comes blasting out of their car’s speakers :-)
Garaj baras saawan ghir aayo!
Garaj baras saawan ghir aayo!
Dekho kaise anjaane rasto pe barse ghataa,
Aao le lein mat waali mastaani rut kaa mazaa.
Aa, aa bhi jaa, meri jaan aa bhi jaa,
Chaahe tu zeher de, yaa jeene ki duaa.
Kaisa yeh naataa hai saanson se saanson kaa?
Sun toh le yeh sadaa bheegi bheegi fizaa.
Yeh zindagi rangon mein doobegi,
Surmayi shaam yeh bhoolegi naa kabhi.
Koi toh baatein ho aankhon se aankhon ki,
Pyaar ki roshi jalti bhujti hui.
Aao dhoondein mil ke khushiyon kaa lamhaa koi,
Seene mei jo bhaddke toh bhaddkaaye sholaa koi.
GARAJ BARAS SAAWAN GIR AAYO!!!!
I could continue to add to this list (for example, Mika Singh’s Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag and that very annoying Baras Jaaye Badal song), but I’ll let you guys do the honors ;-) It’s now it’s your turn to share your favorite upbeat rain songs while I go outside and enjoy the rain :-)
Do stay tuned for a post about melancholic rain songs coming up soon…
Until then, let me leave you with my absolute favorite rain song from the “happy rain songs” category: Koi Ladki Hai (Dil To Paagal Hai). Yes, Udit Narayan and Lata Mangeshkar sound wonderful. And, yes, Uttam Singh is a very nice composer. But what really makes this song so special is the very, very, very beautiful lines by Anand Bakshi–
Chak doom doom, chak doom doom…
Ghodde jaisi chaal, haathi jaisi dum,
O saawan raajaa, kahaan se aaye tum?
Koi ladki hai, jab woh hansti hai,
Baarish hoti hai, chanak chanak chum chum?
Koi ladka hai, jab woh gaataa hai,
Saawan aataa hai, ghummad ghummad ghum ghum?
Baadal jhuke, jhuke se hai,
Rastein ruke, ruke se hai,
Kyaa teri marzi hai meghaa,
Ghar hum ko jaane naa denaa?
(My favorite lines are the following:)
Aage hai barsaat, peeche hai toofaan,
Mausam beimaan, kaahaan chale hum tum?
Chakk doom doom, chak doom doom, chak doom doom, chak…

Awesome! Parbat se kaali ghataa takraayi…somehow rain always feels better in films, kapde nahi dhone padte…lol. Great post.
my all time fav rain song:
Lagi aaj sawan ki phir woh jhadi hai-Chandni
My fav is AAj rapat jaaye…it has to be there in the list of rain-songs and that too at the top:)
What about Saawan barse tarse dil…
I would add Badal yun garajtaa hai from Betaab instead of Anaida’s song…though I can never forgive RD for introducing Shabbir Kumar as Rafisaab’s substitute.
Baadal yun garajta hai is a classic. Fantastic alternate song structure. One rarely gets to hear such mukhdas. Need to hear it soon.
Ya, please include Saawan Barse Tarse Dil from Dehak in the nest post.A classic again.
Went back to the Via Darjeeling song after reading this. Quite a nice one.
Lakeer’s original in tamil – Rhythm had five songs based on five elements. Paighaam was Kaathre en vaasal vandae, the Wind song. I somehow have more affection for Paighaam. Lakeer had an original number – Sadiyaan. Love it.
Arre, yahan bhi baarish ney gaddar machai hui hai!
I have to agree with Tushar, I definitely have more affection and connection with ‘Paigham’ over ‘Kaatre’.
I did play ‘Kaatre’ ALL THE TIME, but have to admit, the Hindi reworking of that track is WONDERFUL!
Normally I really dislike it when tracks are reworked from South to North and vice versa, as the arrangements never sound quite as good.
‘Zarra Zarra’ is one example of that!
Have you heard ‘Vaseegara’?? Man, it is AMAZING!!!!
Bombay Jayshree sounds serene and out of this world in that.
Whereas in the Hindi version, she sounds as if the mike is right in her throat!
The vocal arrangements are just not up to the Tamil version.
But, ‘Paighamm’ is most probably the only Tam-to-Hindi track that not only gets the arrangements right but actually outdoes the original!
That credit goes to Kavita Krishnamurthy!!
IMO anyway.
Her Vocal range is just SUPERB!!!!!!!
And now I’ve got ‘Parbat se kaali… from ‘Chandni’ stuck in my head!
Must say I have never been too fond of Zara Zara/Vaseegara. I feel it’s overrated. As a similar vocal setup, I would rate Anul Maele from VA higher.
@Amanda
wrt ‘Ye Dillagi’ song “If only Sameer would continue to write lyrics with substance as he has for this song”
were you being sarcastic?
‘boondon se baatein’ is a lovely track but I don’t like the whispering part.
Here are some of my absolute favourite rain songs:
-boondaniya barsan laagi re
-jhir jhir jhir jhir badarawa barse
-rimjhim ke tarane leke aayi barsaat
-o sajna barkha bahaar aayi
-saawan ki raaton mein aisa bhi hota hai
Some of my yesteryear favorites:
-Barsaat ka mausam humko jalaaye
-Ye badal phir kab aayega
-Dil mein bheege mausam ki yaad
-Barsa ja aaj rut baawri
Very comprehensive list.
Just adding some more to this and also to the ones already provided in the comments. btw, Aaj Rapat jaaye is ONE happy rain song!
The rain song hit list :p
1. Pyar Hua Ikraar Hua :D :D
2.Bheegie Bheegie Raton Mein (picturized on *sigh* Rajesh Khanna and ZEENAT!!)
3. Ek Ladki bheegie bhaagi si
4. Allah Megh de, paani de
5. Tip tip tip baarish shuru ho gayee, from the era when Aamir Khan didn’t turn intellectual; that reminds me of another voluptuous song–tip tip barsa paani, from Mohra. Not my favourite, but could be others ;) :D
6. Zindagi bhar bhulenge nahin woh barsaat ki raat
7. Asha Parekh and Dharmendra romancing on title track of “aaya sawan jhum ke”
awesome list !
boondon se baatein, rimjhim gire sawan, jhoothi moothi mitwa, baadal, garaj baras …wonderful music…
really nice compilation…good job !
Some more songs that I like-
1. Tip tip barsa pani- Mohra

5. Aakhir tumhe aana hai (Yalgaar)
I love Vaseegara(I dont understand a single word) more than Zarra Zarra(which i understand).
Amanda,
Good job!
My list of Rain favorites is in form of a pictorial quiz (old one.. but can try your hand at it)
http://www.gulzaronline.com/chitrahaar/qz1/sundayqz1.htm
When I said Good Job, it doesn’t mean good selection.. as a few in the list are for the sake of it.. but still a good effort for a specific era.. I was not expecting to have many from old/bw era, but since you’ve included Lapak Jhapak, I was atleast expecting “O Sajna Barkha Bahaar Ayi” (Simply One of the greatest)
‘Sun sun sun barsaat ki dhun’ from SIR.
I loved that album!
No idea if the cd was ever released?!
‘I love u’ from MAHA-SANGRAAM!
Madhuri magic!
I would mention SriDevi, but i’m very biased and love EACH and EVERY song of hers!
Waah gonydhoni ji! Baarish ka hai mausam! Kya yaad dila diya :-)
Listening to it right now.
@Sethumadhavanji
Sir, your list is interesting, makes me think whether they’ll qualify as baarish songs or not because I see that most of them have been picturized in rain but while listening them they won’t give you the feel of Baarish. Songs like zara-zara mention about rain in one or two lines and the entire song is not about rain.
–
PFC par barkha ki jhadi …wah abhi to saawan aaya bhi nahi aaya hai. :D
This is really disappointing…no mention of the Anu Malik classic…
Dekho baarish ho rahi hai…
It’s raining, it’s raining
Mera dil ro raha hai…
It’s paining, it’s paining…
@ steve: thanks for mentioning sun sun sun barsaat ki dhun… i digg the album too!
@ amanda: lovely post. while reading, i cud hear the pitter-patter of the raindrops.
Chicken Frankie with Garam Chai ki Pyaali: correction:
Mera dil ro raha hai…
It’s paining, it’s paining… (wrong)
my heart is paining, it’s paining… it’s paining… it’s paining… (right)
LOL. nobody mess wid anu maaleiiek classix.
jus struck – geela geela paani (satya)
A lovely list Amanda Ji…hav heard most of the songs u mentioned…will chk out the one u said frm Via Darjeeling….i loved almost all the songs of Lakeer…Paigham n Sadiyan being my favs…
there’s a really sweet song from “The Blue umbrella”…”Asmaani Chhatri”…its got some really sweet lyrics…n wat abt Adnan Sami’s “Bheegi Bheegi Raaton mein”…isn’t dat awesome…!!
From the retro ones “Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si” by Kishore and “Yeh raat bheegi bheegi” by Lata n Manna Dey are really nice
@Tushar: Sawan barse from Dahek is really nice…i absolutely love the video….
forgot Rafi’s “Boondein Nahi Sitara”….wat a melody this was….
I dunno what’s worse??
Anu’s ‘Raining/Paining’ or his ‘Eyes’ track! Lol
Magic! U just returned the favour by mentioning ‘geela geela’ from SATYA!
That’s a perfect rain song :-)
‘SIR’ was a fantastic album!
And not available anywhere :-(
Doesn’t anyone have the c.d?!!
Nice compilation Amanda.
You should have added some songs of Ustad ji as well I think. Two come to my mind instantaneously:
More Sayiyan to hain pardes…(Bandit Queen)
Sawan ki bheegi raton mein…
boondon se baatein – takshak. my fav!
@ steve: i hv got 3 tracks. can mail it to u…
‘Boondon se baatein’ was lovely, I agree.
Ironically, I have the South version from ‘Star’ (I think?) but not the Hindi version!
Magic?! I’d really appreciate that :-)
But are we allowed to leave our email i.d’s on here?
Or do u want to mail ‘em to Amanda ji?
Then she could pass ‘em on?
Is that an idea???
CHAALBAAZ!!
‘Na jaane, kahan se aayi hain’!!
Oh but it’s SriDevi, so… :-)
Steve- go ahead & leave your mail i.d here, Magik can mail it to you I guess.
Yes the tamil version of boondon se baatein is from Star, but I guess ARR composed it for Takshak first. In fact I guess all the songs of Star are basically stuff that ARR had composed in Hindi earlier , like Rut aa gayi re from 1947 Earth is machi machiniye in Star
@Steve: I found a site where 5 songs of Sir are der….well m not sure abt how many songs r der in total in dat album…if i’m allowed to post here…i’ll do it…otherwise i’ll mail u d links…
Ok Sethu, agar mujhe maar padi, then i’m going to hide behind u, so u better protect me
Magik & Shoaib, u can leave the links/songs at
luckyoye[at]rocketmail[dot]com
Thankyou!
A big thank you to everyone who added to the list!
@Tushar: lol, baarish mei baahar jaao toh kapde apne aap dhul jaate hai :-)
@Crime-Master-Gogo & Satya: Oops, totally forgot to mention those songs. Thanks for mentioning them!
@Satya: Saawan Barse Dil Tarse will go in my second rain songs write-up.
@Tushar: Sadiyaan rocks!!! My favorite part would have to be the intensity of Kailash Kher’s alaaps at the beginning. Glad you liked the Via Darjeeling song.
@Steve: Nope, haven’t heard Vaseegara. Please send it to me when you get a chance ;-) “she sounds as if the mike is right in her throat!” Oye that was harsh. Maybe you had the volume on full blast. lol.
@Neeraja: Thanks for adding to the list! I’ll have to check out the songs you’ve mentioned soon. Nope wasn’t being sarcastic—I think Sameer has a lot of talent—his songs from Saajan are just one example of the many lovely songs he has written in the past. But, overall, the standard of his lyrics has gone down to shamefully low levels compared to his earlier works. Of course there are exceptions like Saawariya which had lyrics jo maasoomiyat mei doobe hue they. Maybe I’ll do a music review of Saawariya at some point…
@idle-labour: Thanks so much for sharing your favorite rain songs! Yup, totally forgot to include Aaj Rapat Jaaye. But I don’t think Pyaar Huaa Iqraar Hua has any references to rain…great song though!
@rol: thanks so much for your kind words.
@Sethu: thanks for adding to the list! Although some of the songs don’t have references to rain, though.
@gony dhoni: Thanks for mentioning those songs! I did include barsat mein humse mile tum in the list, though. Rut aa gayi re is about basant ka mausam not rain. By god, ab toh yeh Vaseegara sunnaa hi padegaa!
@Pavan Jha: Wow, pictorial quiz! Awesome! Unfortunately I haven’t head “O Sajna Barkhaa Bahaar Aayi”—will try to listen to it soon. Thanks for the recommendation.
@Jahanpanah: Yup, that’s exactly why I didn’t include some of those songs. Jee haan PFC par barkhaa ki jhadi will be back in part two very soon :-)
@Chicken Frankie: waah kyaa classic thaa. lol!
@Magik: Thanks! Oh teri! Forgot that song from Satya!!
@Shoaib: Nice to hear from you! Glad you liked the list. Yes, I really love all the songs from Chatri Chor and it’s one of my favorite films also. Bheegi Bheegi from Adnan’s album is in my second post. And so are two other Adnan songs.
@avn: Thanks! And yes, Ustaad ji’s songs are in my list—-the second one. Actually first this post was going to be three times the length it currently is and have udaasi waale rain songs also. But then a friend suggested I divide it up into two parts, which is what I did. So, stay tuned for part two ;-)
@Steve: Oye hoye, Sridevi ke bhagt ;-)
Arre nahin yaar, there is a difference in the vocal arrangement.
I will send u the song tonight, intezaar karna :-)
SriDevi ki jai ho
One song, though it is not actually a rain song, but which evokes fond memories of rain is “Dhire Dhire Thodi Thodi Chini Kum Hai Chini Kum”. The song has been picturised while there is rain in London and having seen the video, every time I hear the song, I find my self in seventh heaven
Magik, did u realise how the ’sun sun sun’ track has the same tune as the piano intro in that ‘Aaine ke sau tukde’ track from ‘MAA’?
Anu Malik became inspired by Annuu Maaleek, it seems
Oye Amanda, great list there. You just expanded my playlist. Finally, another soul who’s just as crazy bout Junoon’s Garaj Baras. You may like to checkout the Coke Studio jig on Garaj Baras with RFAK accompanying Ali Azmat on vocals and Omran Shafique as lead guitarist. Absolutely mesmerizing:

@Amanda: oh great….lemme guess the other two..are they Baarish from Kabhi to Nazar Milao….and another Baarish from Kisi Din ??
@Abhishek: woah Garaj Baras…how could i forget dat…wat a song dat was….
yea i hav d video of Coke Studio Garaj Baras with RFAK…its awesome….in fact most of the songs from Coke Studio were good…i really liked the idea of fusing different artistes…brings out sum great compositions…
One more rain song “Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho To Ye Lagata Hai Ke Jahan Mil Gaya” from Hanste Zakhm
Two rain songs we missed and both are alsolute favouries of mine are Nahi Samne from Taal and Cham Cham Barse Ghata from Priyatama(Basu Chatterjee film starring Neetu Singh).
@15..Pavan …I just love the song O sajna barkha bahar aayi….specially the part tumko purake mere man ka papihara..was great.Salil Chowdhury-Bimal Roy combo was one of the greatest.

@Steve: Thanks for sending the song! After listening to it I have to admit that I love Zara Zara more than Vaseegara.
@Bharat: Yup, that song really is lovely!
@Shoaib: Arrey waah! You’ve guessed the other two songs correctly :-)
@Anindya: I have Nahin Saamne in the second list/write-up.
@Pavan Jha: Thanks so much for posting the link! Truly an awesome composition.
@Abhishek: I’m happy to hear I’ve expanded your playlist. lol. WOW! Thanks a million for sharing the YouTube video link. Awesome!!!! lol, now I have two versions of Garaj Baras to go latoo over :-)
Here are more rain songs for the list:
Dekho Naa: Fanaa
Kuch Aisaa Jahaan: Bas Itnaa Saa Khwaab Hai
Saawan Kaa Mahinaa: Milan
Humraahi: Atif Aslam’s Meri Kahaani
Allah Megh De (Subha Mudgal): Ramchand Pakistani
Huh? Did u mean u prefer ‘Zara’ over ‘Vaseegara’ or the other way round?
Didn’t u notice the farrk in the vocal arrangements, Amanda ji?
Steve, I meant that after listening to Vaseegara I like Zaraa Zaraa much more. I think that her voice captures the feelings of longing/tadap much better in Zaraa Zaraa. But, that’s just my opinion ;-)
@Anindya:how cud i forget Nahi Saamne…wat a beautiful song dat is….
@Amanada:i’m eagerly waitin for ur next list…but so many rain songs have already been mentioned hea…i wondr which one’s do u have…apart frm these…
Shoaib, part 2 will be posted by tomorrow at the latest :-)
realized that i forgot to include fuzon’s malhaar on this first list :-( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljtucGsjmBU
