Pancham Unmixed : A Salute to the Boss - R.D. Burman

Better late than never. Capturing R.D. Burman’s life in a documentary. And when it finally came out, what a way to do it! Brahmanand Singh does complete justice to the boss. We saw Pancham Unmixed at IFFLA 2007 and were blown away. Its the simplicity with which Brahmanand unfolds the flow of the documentary.

Following are two videos. The first is a 4 minute trailer of the documentary. The second is a 25 minute discussion we had with Brahmanand after watching the doc.

We’ve got to see one of highly engrossing and moving documentary in such a long time. Now if only you could… the rest of the world doesn’t know what it’s missing.

Oz, there has to be a way of putting this documentary online (with appropriate commercial credit). There is a huge audience (of course, including me) dying to watch this and it’s almost criminal for us not to get a chance to see this.
It’s Pancham’s birthday and this is a wonderful tribute. Brahmanand - how do we watch this?

    @krishn,
this documentary is looking for distributors to be released in theaters. Brahmanand the director is working very hard on this. The problem is that many distributors in India do not think that documentaries are meant to be watched in a theater. IFFLA, where the documentary received a tremendous response saw some very positive response from the distribution houses here in the USA. PFC on its part has also been working on this. That is the situation so far. Brahmanand will be able to give some updates when he comes to comment in here.

    Brilliant…………
Hats off to the director for such a nostalgic timeless piece of work.

  6. suchita b on June 27th, 2008 10:46 pm

brilliant!!! thankyou for getting these hidden talents in the forefront… would love to see the entire documentary..

We need something like Icarus films [NY BASED] in India, to distribute documentaries…

All the Anand Patwardhan’s documentaries have been distributed by Icarus.

We still live in stone age, since, documentaries and animation are not considered films.

In India, the only way to distribute your docus is selling to a National geographic, or animal planet:) CNN IBN and NDTV have also started a docu section and Mr. Burman’s docus stand a very good chance there…

    lata mangeshkar …?

    gulzar…?
old colleague of pancham da r doing?
    big b?
    dev sab?
    javed akthar?

all these re-mix musicians who steal panchamdas songs?

Hi, Have seen this docu - at its premiere. It’s just simply fantastic! Haven’t seen such a moving / enegaging / informative / revealing two hour docu on a musician before! In fact -have become an even more ardent admierer of RD after watching this film! It’s one film whose DVD I would like to have in my personal collection! Brahma, let me know when you come out with the DVD.

and guys here’s an inside info on the Pancham Unmixed premiere that was held at IFFLA - a man flew in from Dubai to Los Angeles the morning of the premiere, saw the movie and took the return flight back to Dubai right after the movie. The man is none other than apna KCP :)

  11. indian_cinema on June 28th, 2008 11:28 am

stop doing business in the name of rd burman….if its a homage to r.d free karo… bullshit……. brahmanand ji ko bolo make the docu free for all..dhanda mat karo nakli wala……middle finger

  12. oz on June 28th, 2008 11:46 am

@Indian_cinema - I’ve got to remove reply to your comment. It’s stupid and idiotic to think that one should spend one’s own money to make something you like and then give it away to you for free because you will not pay a dime and instead coat your selfish desire as “rd burman ke naam pe dhanda”. Why don’t you come forward put your own money and make such a documentary and then give it away for free. Or give your money to the documentary, get the rights and give it away for free to all of us. If you don’t have the money, you can approach many non profit or charitable organizations and approach them for funds to buy this documentary. When they ask you the reason, go ahead, tell them you want to show this documentary for free to everyone in this world.

Some people just can’t afford it to do what you want (here). They put in the money for the love of doing something for the RD, expecting they would atleast get their money back if possible.

But then if there are other people like your good self who may have the money, to do the same thing, and want nothing in return (recovering the investment) simply wanting to do it as a charity, then I encourage you to come forward and do it.

So the challenge for you from PFC is to buy this documentary and make it available for everyone for free. Please email me you true name and number so we can talk and PFC will support your desire. If you can buy this documentary to show it to everyone for free, I announce here that PFC will show this documentary for free, and whatever cost for servers, technicians etc. is required to show this movie, PFC will pay it from its own pocket.

I’m waiting for your email. And I hope you are a - take the challenge kind of a person - and not a mere weakling who sits behind his computer and trash talks because it is “free”.

  13. Tony Mera Naam on June 28th, 2008 12:08 pm

~Clap clap clap!~ Oz bhai, talk about getting someone to put their money where their mouth is. Its easy to talk. Some of us have put $$$ into a film and got nothing in return (financially speaking) so we understand the value of the product we’ve created.

Hey Indian_Cinema, I’m guessing you don’t buy many CD’s… just download the music for free as well…

Seriously, some people need to give their damn head a shake…

    Indian_Cinema,

If you dont have money to spend on the name of RD Burman, do let me know your postal address and I’ll buy and donate a DVD to you..

Unfortunately you are not aware how difficult it was for Bramhanand to come up with such a brilliant piece of work..
and you cant picture How much time and effort has gone in and it is beyond your imagination how difficult it was for bramha in terms of resources specially monitory resources..

but ofc it is the limit of your intelligence that is reflected in your comment..

Fingers for you and Thumbs up to Bramhanand!

  16. indian_cinema on June 29th, 2008 4:21 am

nice to see so many replies ….. i appreciate his work for sure what i meant was take it to the masses rather than just praising it in restricted circles…and thanxalott i will give u my postal address plss courier..i take all the criticism in my stride…atleast couple of point of views came out…thanxalott….to sum pfc is also a creative commons initiative and its doin grtttt… i hope u know what i mean…brahms sory if mu comment hurt but tat was a genuine querey i had in my mind…kudos brahms…

  17. kcp on June 29th, 2008 4:33 am

agreed Pavan. In fact more than the love for RD, it was only due to Brahma’s “passion”, that I made a point to visit the first show of this fabulous piece of art.

And Mr indian_cinema - THIS documentary is made exactly for that : take it to the masses. Just wait and watch.
The ONLY thing pending from Brahma is taking legal clearances ( copyright issues ) of various artists speaking about Pancham, various music clips put into the film, various video clips put into the same, etc. Brahma does not want any complications lateron becasue he is expert in making films and not distributing them. Any help/suggestions from PFCians would also do ( http://www.brahmanandsingh.com/contact.htm ).

  18. indian_cinema on June 29th, 2008 5:50 am

i apologise all at pfc and brahma for my comments…got ur point…..

  19. Pavan Jha on June 29th, 2008 1:27 pm

    thx Indian_Cinema…

but I agree on one of your concerns, specially when I watched the first trailer of Bachna Ae Hasino.n today…..
Certainely not a tribute to Pancham/Kishore or even Rishi K.. Just cashing on the old gold..

  20. Pratim D. Gupta on June 30th, 2008 3:17 am

how can I get to watch this Pavan?

  21. Nina on June 30th, 2008 5:07 am

Truly a fantastic documentary, touching and elegant. I loved that Mr. Singh was respectful to Asha Bhosle and did not mention her relationship with R.D. Burman, beyond their professional collaboration. That’s classy! The next step now, for this terrific work of filmmaking, is a film festival in NYC, where I know loads of people who would enjoy it!

  22. sudhir on July 1st, 2008 1:34 am

    Hi,
I am not sure wheather this documentry will be released in Theaters. But let Brahma try & if It is not possible for theatre release then he can certainy try to tie up with Sony Max or Zee Cinema as both were popular only after showing Pancham Films. Again he can show over there all of his 80 hour rec in between.

    Pancham

Would love to know whether there is going to be a London screening for this fabulous documentary. I wish I went to the premier in LA. Also looking forward to the inevitable DVD release with the extras which could not make the final cut. More amazing that it took 14 years since Pancham’s departure, that we will get to a proper documentary film on the genius. Hats off the Brahmanand for his time and effort. I hope he is able to negotiate a deal so the film reaches the masses.

  24. Saurabh Dixit on July 2nd, 2008 10:43 am

Ask Brahmanand Sir to post few chapters of his doc here: http://ytscreeningroom.googlepages.com/home

This place is quite cool actually.

i get goose bumps just listening to oz, brahms and the 4 min trailer. Thank you very much to Bhrams and his team.

If only there was a way for me to pay something and watch this online. I would certainly do it. In fact I would easily pay $50 for this DVD.

Saw the movie yesterday.. sat next to Brahma. what a great humble guy.
it is truly remarkable what he was able to extract out from the participants.
his songs selection was perfect and very situational to the narrative.
and purely entertaining.. of course great music, laughs and lot of emotions..

there is no doubt Pancham will be remembered for ages to come.. but I have no doubt that Pancham Unmixed will help generations to come understand RD and his passion..
and thanks for that to passion of Brahma for making this possible..

  32. Pratik on November 13th, 2008 1:47 pm

I saw this at the MIAAC last week. I have the Q&A with Bhramanand Singh on video. Will post it on the net soon, hopefully as a post on PFC.

And of course, the film rocked! :)
