The making of music part is very interesting. (The rest I skipped for the fear of ’spoilers’) I guessed Desraj Lackhaani would be a regular ‘Maata ka jaagran’ singer from one of Delhi’s suburbs. But turns out he was fished out of interiors of Punjab….and that kid (Master Mahavir Chopra) singing ‘Tu Raja Ki Rajkumari’…just wow!
I somehow have very huge expectations from ‘Oye Lucky…’ and a huge credit goes to the music team…Sneha and the singers.
Though there was no mention of Brijesh Shandilya and Himani Kapoor? Are they also a new find?
Looking very much fwd to the film…
oye funny
funny oye!
Very impressed!! (to say the least!!!)Great job by the music team!! wishing the very best to Sneha and hoping for more lovely music from her……
Eagerly waiting for the movie..
Thanks again for sharing Oz!
Thanks for this. I liked the part re. how the music came to be the most. Very different, Sneha K’s approach.
@Dibakar, Please get Sneha to blog on her experiences creating the music. Honestly, I thought the music director must be a rustic “guy” from punjab pind. It’s so difficult to touch the soul of the music when you are not really attached to the genre/culture/region/dialect. I couldnt believe someone can touch such finer details so well. Is this her first movie? She has made way in to the male dominated bollywood music industry with such aplomb.More power to Sneha!
God…this is brilliant…loved it…like how excited dibaker is…he is an actor..i tell you..somebody should cast him…
Sneha is hot ;-)
love the fact that utv has nailed its target market…..blogging on pfc is just awesome….
sneha has done the music for the RGV disaster called “GO”..so technincally she’s also one of RGV ’s discoveries
..her work here is awesome..A ragini in bollywood..sooper..
^^^ there was a movie called GO!!!!!!!!!!
i mean is this for real????
How lucky are u Movie Fan??
Some of us went out and paid for the dvd!
I have ‘GO’ at home.
But will most probably NEVER watch it.
What to do? RGV fan na?
Even buy his productions!
that was fun! does anyone know if Sneha is the first female bollywood music composer?
I know Usha Khanna was composing songs since 70s – one of her biggest hits – Shayad meri shaadi ka khayal dil mein aaya hain.. isi liye mummy ne meri tumhe chai pe bulaya hain… (from Souten starring Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Pran, Padmini Kolhapure and directed by Sawan Kumar Tak)… don’t know if there were any female composers in Hindi movies before her…
I know that Bhanumati has composed for some movies but I am not sure if she is earlier than Usha Khanna. Bhanumati didn’t compose for a lot of movies though.
Oz bhai – Usha Khnna’s first film, a major super hit music, was in 1959.
Oh wow! she’s older than I thought.
Jaddan Bai ( Nargis’s mother ) also gave music and she is the first lady music director in Bollywood for the film “Talaash-e-Haque” ( 1934-35). I have an article from the 40’s where it is mentioned that Times of India made a note that she was the first woman music director. Ishrat Sultana was the second lady music director ( Adel-e-Jehangir – 1934 ). Immediately after these two , “Saraswati Devi” came in Bollywood and she was the first “prolific” Music Director in the 30’s and 40’s decades. Then we have a few music directors, who have given music to atleast 1 hindi film – like Amirbai Karnataki, Arundhati Devi , Chitra Singh, Gauhar Karnataki, Ila Arun, Kishori Amonkar, Meena Mangeshkar, Shradhha, Mukhtar Begum, Neeta Sen, Prabha Thakur , Pratibha Dutt , Shakila Bano Bhopali, Shanta Apte, Sharda, Sheetal, Sudha Malhotra, Sumitra Lahidi. Then we have assistants/unofficial ones like Ira Roshan & Meera Dev Burman.
Not entirely sure if Jaddan Bai actually predated Khurshid Homji aka Saraswati Devi. Her first film was Jawani ki Hawa in 1935, so perhaps Jaddan Bai beat her by barely a few months.
Saraswati Devi is most famous for scoring the music for Achhut Kanya with Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani. She’s most certainly the only female Parsi music director we’ve had in Hindi music to date.
The two names in contention are Jaddanbai ( songs recorded in 1934 ) & Ishrat Sultana ( film released in 1934 ).
Saraswati Devi is DEFINITELY 3rd ( her “Jawani Ki Hawa” was releasd on 18th Sept 1935 )
Wow! Unrealistic stuff this… I mean to see this kind of effort given by the music team… mazaa aa geya dekh ke…
Sneha ji… shagirdh banaa lo apna!!
Keep making good music!
Hats off kcp & Dewi. Good research
Awesome. Finally got to see the faces behind the music, and man was it some surprise! Deshraj! Jugni! Tu raja ki! truly fun. and all those jagraata’s in Haryana, wow. That must have been some trip. The making was so devoid of all the usual bullshit one gets to see- this hero this heroine and all that. they were talking purely of the film and nothing else. loved the shoot clips of Abhay and Paresh Rawal, and how Dibakar pataaoed him for the triple role. Truly all great cons in the world happen for a noble reason. This film is bound to create history. Biggest indie hit of the year.
Tushar, actually it was a Ragini competition. Ragini is a Haryanvi folk form. A bit of an acquired taste for me – but I found myself very pleasantly surprised by the “Tu Raja ki Rajdulari” ragini in OLLO.
Hi sneha…I would like to compliment you on your fantastic music of Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye!I love all the songs so much that I listen to them all the way from my office in Andheri to Mira road where I live. The title track is very peppy and my favorite too. Overall, the album is refreshing and completely lovable. The songs are catching up with the public too! Congratulations for your bubbly successful album.
Warm regards,Shlok Sharma
I must admit that I did not like the making of the songs. I know that it is the order of the day, but I do not feel engrossed with music that is not made live, with musicians and singers. Thats the reason maybe, very few songs of today , catch my “complete” attention.
I mean I loved the passion of Sneha, her research and all….if I had not seen this making-video, maybe I might have liked the songs “more”.
oops. I made a mistake. I am pretty sure that Ira Roshan has composed one Mukesh song, mmediately after the death of Roshan
When I heard Sneha as the music D for OLLO, suddenly I thought, have I ever heard music composition by a female music D? Have you? I think Lata Mangeshkar did try unsuccessfully, but switched back to singing.
Sneha’s debut, as well as the debut of a female MD, rocks! The raw feel of Ragani singer to the ultra-chic instrumentation, the freq range is something my equalizer cannot handle :-)
After hearing the tracks many time, I am loving it even more – the reggae-ish rhythm section on ‘tu raja ki’ is totally a kool idea.
Sneha ji aap to debut innings mein century maar di?
