PFC needs your IDEAS
oz | Qwiki | May 12, 2008 at 9:48 am
With the increasing costs of running PFC and still keeping it independent, at times it gets a tad bit tough for volunteers who donate towards keeping the site up and running with their donations.
Hence, we are looking for ideas, your ideas – that you believe will help us…

I suggest paid ads from film adverstisers and monthly sponsors. But please to not get paid post etc because it will end the free spirit that PFC works on. I understand your problems but it should stay free if it must retain its unique charactor.
Cheers

Ads are PFC’s best bet….but try contextual ads ,related to cinema or arts in some fashion.
Like they do in social networking sites which have ads based on users profile.
But this will require some good web designers ,who can place ads meaningfully…
I’ve started reading PFC recently so forgive me if this sounds simplistic but why does PFC need a lot of money to run? After all, it’s just a bunch of blogs put together. Maybe, along with getting a little more money, it can also be run a little more cheaply.
Having spoken to Oz in the past, I am a bit guarded since Oz spends so much time thinking about PFC, it is hard to suggest something that he has not already thought of.
Nevertheless, here is an idea.
Allow all donors to own a piece of PFC.
Lets say, PFC is a startup and we decide to reserve 10% of PFC for donors and lets say this is 100,000 stock options. We create virtual stock options for $10 each and donors get 1 stock for every $10 they donate. Thus, the valuation of PFC would be $10M if we can instantly find 100,000 donors who each donate $10. Of course this is unlikely because the value of PFC is not $10M at this time. Nevertheless, it will attract more donors since they will get something in return. Also, one day if PFC does make it big, there will be a way for these early supporters to cash out.
Am happy to discuss in detail if PFC team thinks this is worth exploring.
Among other ideas,
2. What is unique about PFC is its supporters? I think. These are people who are a tad more interested in quality cinema. Some are downright passionate about it. May be we could create a pool of super committed, committed and mildly committed regular visitors. We allow select producers/distributors/directors/scriptwriters etc. to interact with these pools through surveys. Of course, visitors are added to this pool only after PFC gets their consent. I am sure there are other ideas around this.
Of course, PFC team must have thought of how best to monetize the USP of PFC – its patrons. Most of these ideas require somekind of membership/categorization etc. If we can get better idea of the demographic it could become a very saleable. Need to analyze the audience before we can confirm if this is a sizeable audience to be of value to marketers to glean information from. Would be happy to investigate if PFC team wants and needs help to explore.
3. I dont know but there may be a threshold for the kind of audience a site like PFC will attract. I am sure we are not there yet but it is likely to be much lower than, say rediff movies etc.. That said, Ad revenues are likely to be limited. So, to improve Ad revenues, we would have to provide better demographic information. This would help only if we feel we have a different demographic that too an interesting one. If not, we would have to diversify into other services possibly paid to generate revenue.
My “Rambling Detector” has been flashing red for a while. So I stop.
