PFCOne 2007 : Day Four

Day Four. The last day for showing movies received in this year’s festival. The fourth day was planned as a day off initially, where we would do some short movie premiere or something of that sort. But with a 124 movies, there was no way we could take a break. With around 31 movies shown each day for four days, we hope you’ve had a rocking time and it has been a learning experience for many of the students of cinema.

Tomorrow we move in to announce the winners of the PFCOne 2007 Festival…

Until then enjoy the movies published on this fourth day of the festival…!

Here I am, two cents poorer :

6 - the best one of the lot!! … aakhir banayee kisne hai ;) j/k … please leave commments - good, bad, everything

Fishes - amateur acting, but oddly funny. The last dialogue is effective.

I Know the Way - yet another theme based on blindness, this one’s light-hearted though

Pyscho - awesome acting, good editing as well

Rashmi - nicely edited, i’ve read a similar short story earlier, but despite that, good execution

Roof Afza - amazing acting by the kid, were the kids actually picked up from the streets?

Doorbell that Didn’t Work - funny! “Bonnnnniiiiieeeeee” :d

Envelope - good acting except at the end, he didn’t look so relieved

Eternal Profundity of a Thread and a Needle - that dialogue delivery was awesome! baaki kuchh nahin (and what’s with the credits, get on with it yaar!)

@Rooh Afja (20) by Rohit Dhulia,

Rohit, did you prepare these kids to act or shot what they were already doing?
If first is the case then Mira Nair’s position is in danger :)

Inspite of awful language you kept in your film, its a wonderfully film with realistic touch.
    Congrats:d

  8. RK on December 4th, 2007 3:37 am

    @The Doorbell…by Kenny Basumatary (26),

=Kenny, Man your films are fun to watch.
You are man of Satire, Man for Satire :)

    Congrats on your efforts.:d

  9. RK on December 4th, 2007 3:44 am

    @Gajendra Ji,
    Simplicity can be so appealing!
You also have contributed with so many films. Rashmi is your best among all the films you submitted in PFCOne.
Your desire to convert the concept in to visual medium is amazing.
Concept of Badaltey Mausam is also good. Its a good short film.
You have got very appealing starting. Once credits etc start coming on screen, they bind the attention. Very professional there.
Pleased to see your work :)

  10. Gajendra S Shrotriya on December 4th, 2007 3:49 am

    Thanks RK

  16. Indraneel on December 4th, 2007 4:49 am

ALL RIGHT..seen the flicks..time for my chaar annas!!
    6 - wacky but underdeveloped!!?? - 1.5*
    All of us - Very good..professional - 3*
Badaltey Mausam - Gajendra has hit the mark with this. Poignant but could be tighter.- 2.5*
    City Clean - good message - 2*
Enter - Journey is depicted but for what?? - 1.5*
I know the way - Very well done - 4*
    Kasla Kay? - good docu! - 2*
    Life, death… - Good visuals. Idea there but… - 2*
    Psycho - No twist.. - 1.5*
Rashmi - the lady had her eyes blinking, 1 min movies cant afford big mistakes!! - 1.5*
Rooh afza - Docu on street kids!! - 1.5*
    Sky - average - 1.5*
    Struggle - good photography..oft repeated story - 2*
    The Briefcase - nice try - 2*

Movies not commented about here do not make the grade.

I should mention about Kenny Basumatary..he has it in him to be a very good film maker. His humor is apparent. But his movies do not make the grade now! Story..story..story!!!!!

But, OZ and Co. you guys have been awesome and as an avid PFC reader/viewer I sincerely hope that you guys at the site go places. Just drop a line if you need any kind of marketing or Ground event assistance.

  17. RK on December 4th, 2007 5:12 am

    @Indraneel(16)
    You write ,
[Rashmi - the lady had her eyes blinking, 1 min movies cant afford big mistakes!! ]

Do you mean dead dont blink their eyes?
    ———–
I assume you have seen Psycho (1960, Alfred Hitchcock’s film).
Even eyes of her actress, Janet Leigh, were moving in the long lasted shot, after she is killed.
Once we have discussed, eyes of Satyajit Ray’s old actress of Pather Panchali were moving after she is dead. :)
Both AF and SR are Directors of Directors! When their well versed eyes can miss these points then Rashmi’s mistake can be avoided. :-?

Or that was era of one time shooting and now with digital cameras one can work again with the mentioned shot?

  18. Gajendra S Shrotriya on December 4th, 2007 5:21 am

Hi Indraneel / RK… Even my son pointed this (Eye blinking)out to me. But then I thought, if ghosts could walk, why couldn’t they blink.

  19. RK on December 4th, 2007 5:28 am

    Gajendra Ji,
I also took it that way when saw your film that you have chosen it that way only. Its a listened thing for all that ghosts dont blink or their images dont appear in mirror or sometimes too bizzare saying that their feet are in opposite direction. Who has seen Ghost? it was certainly not representation of a dead body like Psycho and Pather Panchali, hence your version has to be accepted. It was an illusion.
Was not SRK, the ghost of Paheli, drinking, eating, blinking, sleeping and even making love with a real woman? :-?
Seems theories about Ghosts have to be subjective:)

  20. Virinder Singh on December 4th, 2007 5:41 am

Hi guys I am the maker of Life, death and Enlightenment- care to expoliate your trepidations about my film?
    @ indraneel- but what? and
@ Sandeep- 2/5 thanks but was it really not complete or poignant enough in its 1 min form?

  21. Gajendra S Shrotriya on December 4th, 2007 5:55 am

Agreed RK… Ghosts in Bollywood and even in Hollywood have been blinking for ages.

  23. Pratik on December 4th, 2007 6:28 am

    @ Indraneel

I’d be the first to agree with you that 6 is underdeveloped. It requires more time, it’s not quite 60-second material. Either that or it’s not good writing. But thanks for finding it “wacky”! :)

    @ RK / Gajendra

The blinking eyes caught my attention as well. It’s not a really a question of IF ghosts can blink or not. The fact that the ghost in your film is silent doesn’t conform with her blinking; that’s the only reason it struck me. I think that’s what Indraneel was talking about. Despite that, it’s a good film.

  24. RK on December 4th, 2007 6:49 am

    @Pratik,

How do we interpret the scene? We can see it in the frame of The Sixth Sense also that Rashmi herself does not know she has been died and when she hears through Phone which Rajeev listens then she realises that she is actualy dead now and hence she blinks to accept that realisation, ala Bruce Willis in The Sixt Sense!
and Rajeev Says to Rashmi, you are wet. so we can ask how Ghost can be wet?
I personally dont understand this blinking objection particularly in this film because its not case iike dead body of deceased person as was in the case of Pather Panchali or Psycho. Here we encounter spirit or say ghost and ghost has no pre defined definition.
    :-?

  25. Pratik on December 4th, 2007 6:58 am

    @ RK

I’m not comparing the ghost to ghosts in any other films, I could care less about the rest. I am looking at the ghost in the context of this film. The ghost is silent in the film. And when it blinks, something doesn’t seem right, it’s a little out of place. As a viewer, I have no preconceptions about the character, what she did before she died. The maker of the film might.

Gajendra, was the blinking meant to be portrayed on screen? Or did you use it because that’s the only shot you had?

  26. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 6:58 am

baal ki khaal mat nikalo yaar :)

I hoped it was funny, else why I would bring PP, Psycho, TSS in this discussion of short films here:) Its for fun :d

  28. Pratik on December 4th, 2007 7:07 am

    @ aam papad

Exactly! ;) … theek hai, theek hai, enough with the blinking already - Rashmi’s a good film and that’s all that matters.

  29. Devils Advocate on December 4th, 2007 7:09 am

top three for me today are Sky, Rooh afsa and Life death and enlightenment- only because i am biased towards it, as I helped make it. Tomorrow we find out about the winners!!! any clarifications just message ahead.

  30. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:21 am

Best films for me today were -
    City Clean - excellent idea
Sky - high in emotional quotient
The door bell that didnt work - Unintentionally funny n simple

Films that didnt work for me -
Badaltey mausam - Boring like one of those k soaps
Sound matters - So wannabe man
Fishes, enter - Wat the hell were they !!!

Voices(Spl mention) - Guys dont u think this film was 36 chowringhee lane revisited???

  31. Elliot Erwitt on December 4th, 2007 7:22 am

it’s nice to see so many different stories coming out. good job filmmakers!

losers like sandeep chavan and indraneel seem to be having their khalid moment today with their ’scholarly’ ratings!

  32. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 7:24 am

    @Elliot Erwitt
no hard feelings buddy ..every one has right to rate the films …

  33. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:26 am

by the way i m the guy who made the best film of the festival ‘the beginning ‘.

Criticism is welcome. But i know for a fact that none of u hv words to criticise as u all hv lovd it…

Taali maarne ki zaroorat nahi hai
    Thank u Thank u

  34. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:29 am

    @Elliot

I share yr thoughts buddy. Will someone ask sandeep chavan n indraneel as to wat gems they hv made.

We might hv made a shit film but we made it with heart.

  35. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 7:32 am

guys ..crticism helps to grow ….and it doesn’t matter from where it comes …

  36. Pratik on December 4th, 2007 7:35 am

    @ aampapad

So you were the one who made The Beginning. Bahut hi timepass thi!! Who’s that main actor? He was awesome in your film. After watching the film again, I just had one suggestion : more variety of shots, some close-ups, some at a different angle.

  37. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:37 am

    @andy kadam

bhau dont u think there has to be a basis for criticism and it cant be just to fill in the posts and making sure that ur seen on the forum regularly.
    Ofc its welcome…
If u c my likes n dislikes for today ive also mentioned the reasons behind it.

Now that really helps to grow and not only the ratings.

  38. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 7:39 am

so Tarun Mahajan is aam papad

  39. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:41 am

    @ Pratik

Thx bro for yr suggestion.I wanted a very jump cut kind of a feeling in the edit pattern and somehow i felt that by changing the angle the viewer mite just loose the connect with the film.It happened with so many films in this fest where the editing seemed to choppy n sloppy.

Thats abt it..And most importantly this is not the last film I made..

  40. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:42 am

  43. Pratik on December 4th, 2007 7:49 am

    @ aam papad

Hmmmm, ok … I understand what you’re talking about.

About the ratings, I agree. We don’t want the numbers. We want constructive feedback.

  44. kabir on December 4th, 2007 7:49 am

I know the way: brilliant feel and colors, the ending could have had more of an impact if there was a single zoom to the boy who is blind, rather then zooming in and then zooming out and then zooming back in.

Rohafza : a very real film , something like a dogme95 film . not really satisfied by the moral.

the doorbell that did’nt work : fun , keeps you interested .

psycho : the main character is soo bad that he

  45. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:50 am

i like aam papad and i thought it’ll be a unusual name…thats it

  46. aam papad on December 4th, 2007 7:53 am

  48. Ashok.N on December 4th, 2007 9:23 am

Ultimate Family Holiday-Releastic, emotive and too good. It represents a true spirit of a family Holiday.

  49. Sandeep Chauhan on December 4th, 2007 9:52 am

    @Elliot and aam papad

hmmm….so u guys got hurt…..sorry for that….but if just a 5/5 rating makes you feel any happier….lemme change my reviews….

ALL MOVIES ……… 5/5…..reason: Everybody Made it from their Heart

And this could have saved a lot of my time I spent on watching all movies as soon as they are posted

    now my argument:

I don’t know how often you guys follow PFC….but if you have…there was one of anurag’s post which said about the culture of PFC…..

“We are not in the process of mutual masturbation”

Karan Johar (and for that sake most of the directors) also makes movies from his heart, Maniratnam, Sudhir Mishra, Anurag et al also makes movies from their heart…..does that mean i like KJ’s family-friends-picnic-on-screen as much as Maniratnam’s Dil Se, Mishra’s HKA, or Anurag’s Black Firday…NO NO NO NO

I believe in fairness and i won’t compromise that just because I am giving reviews for some fellows on PFC because that doesn’t help anybody. If u SUCK u SUCK….no two ways bout that…..come up with something better next time…..

And if you guys get let down by just a couple of reviews you have a very hard time ahead….

If you wanna see how good a short film can be…watch this

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/884049/kalakaar_the_artist/

Everybody here appreciates that newcomers have taken a big leap by participating in PFC One…..but this is a National Award not Filmfare

  50. Sandeep Chauhan on December 4th, 2007 10:00 am

    @Virinder

I think the message you tried to give was good but somehow the visuals don’t make you feel the same from inside…..i mean it’s like…..if you remove the sound from video…..will I be able to feel anything about it ?

  51. george on December 4th, 2007 10:11 am

Sandeep .. just saw KALAKAAR !!! amazin stuff !!!

  52. striker on December 4th, 2007 10:13 am

kenny basumatary, man.. the humor in all your films is so simple, yet so well-portrayed.. you’re a good actor too.. would love to work with you..

i haven’t seen 36CL but i really liked “voices”.. i think it was the narration that did it for me.. the music was overpowering in some parts though.. try to tone it down a little so the dialog isn’t drowned out.. nice job regardless.

great job to all the participants for making these movies, with a special mention to mr. shrotriya, who has taught us all that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. nice job with “badaltey mausam” sir.. probably my favorite out of your other ones.

  53. Omprakash Seresta on December 4th, 2007 10:53 am

city clean: was effective and brilliant. i liked it because it didnt had any stupid voiceovers. 3 stars

kasla kay ? This is a brilliant way to deliver messg. The best movie for me (though I said in my earlier posts that most of the movies are derived from the urge to deliver a social messg). 5 stars. kudos to the makers

Peace and pieces: liked the sarcasm. 2 and 1/2 stars because of tacky presentation.

The Briefcase: This one is okay. Much better than the others. 2 and 1/2 stars

The Door Bell That Didnt Work: The last scene was the best one. The girl running away… ha ha 2 and 1/2 stars

The envelope: Is as usual, message driven short. But deftly executed. 2 and 1/2 stars

I’m agree with Anand Kadam: crticism helps to grow

  55. Devils advocate on December 4th, 2007 1:45 pm

    @ PG
I have grown up playing “risk” and loved that as a methaphor for all the nations, diverting all thier “resources” into one medium: oil- whereas they have so many alternatives like solar and turbines to manufacture power. So it was a neat concept i must agree.
Would like to add one last thing I would have wrote the last statement as “do we really need so much oil?” or something more capitvating to being out a more questionable thing to think about in the end.

    One question:
Will these movies be available for people to see for the next few days?

@Elliot and Aam Papad - Muchos Gracias for anointing me with a “Loser” Tag. For just this, you deserve an Oscar. The people who know me have never been able to tell me that!

Cinema has two groups of people involved. The makers and the Viewers. PFC One has provided a huge platform for the makers. But, the other group of people have to see it, enjoy it, salivate over the creativity and toast the participants and winners.

I toast all participants and as I have kept repeating through all the reviews that I am to be forgiven if I have aggrieved anyone as I know creative people do tend to get hurt fast. I manage so many of them all day!

But I need to express my views too. Or we might as well stay away from such platforms. Is that a goal of yours, my friends? If it is so, let me know in clear and complete terms because I am the one who is not deprived.

Also, movies are there on youtube too. Great ones! They have a comment column too. I could always spew my “loserliness” over there. Why here?

Have all of you seen Sarvanan’s creation. Here is a man who shall go places.
Kenny has not been able to make a compelling movie among all his entries. But, it is visible that he is hugely talented.
‘I want to see me’ held me and made me think about the director’s thought processes. So much emotion there!

They may not win prizes but they all have a future.

Lastly, I salute Gajendraji. I am getting to be a fan of his humility. A student in his 40s. Yesterday, in a Leadership Seminar, I took his example. THE AUDIENCE WAS QUIET. THAT WAS IN AWE OF THIS PERSON.

The cup is never half empty..It is always half full. It depends on the viewer!

Gajendraji, agar main Jaipur aaun to miliyega??

RK / Pratik / Aam papad… I didn’t know eye blinking ghost would be so much discussed. All that matters is you all liked the film. Thanks a lot for all the encouragement.

  67. Gajendra S Shrotriya on December 4th, 2007 10:02 pm

OM… Thanks! Its a great feeling to be appreciated at PFC.

  68. Gajendra S Shrotriya on December 4th, 2007 10:12 pm

Indraneel… you made me feel as if I have already won the Oscar. Anyways thanks a lot! And pls do let me know when you visit Jaipur.

  69. Gopi on December 4th, 2007 11:04 pm

Hmm… after all the movies, the one which has the most repeat value will be 1 minute of Local Kung Fu… I mean, it wont be winning any awards, but it sure makes me laugh…
And Kenny B’s (again) Doorbell… very funny in a very honest way….

  70. Gopi on December 5th, 2007 1:33 am

I will be eating my words here…

  71. Kenny on December 5th, 2007 3:38 am

Thanks to Pratik, KJ, RK, aam papad, Kabir and Omprakash Seresta for their lavish appreciation :”>
Striker, I’m moving to Mumbai next week - going to struggle :d
Gopi, thanks a million for mentioning the repeat value point. It’s my personal belief that films I make should have some kind of repeat value.
And Indraneel, aaponar shubhecchha ke liye dhonyobaad. I understand that you might not have found my movies compelling. We all have different tastes :) I was just attempting a bit of small scale comedy, that’s all. I was thinking of doing a horror clip as well, but I got the idea too late.
As for the debate over criticism, I agree with Sandeep Chauhan - PFC isn’t meant to be a mutual pleasuring club. Sandeep’s given my Horror Movie Comedy a WTF…!!! rating :), but I suspected even as I was trying to cram it into 60 secs that it desperately needed at least another 15-20, or quite a few people might actually go WTF was that…and it happened. :d Thankfully my ego was salvaged by a few others who DID like it
