PFCOne 2007: Day One

This post is sponsored by

Welcome to the first PFCOne Film Festival for one minute movies. This is day one of the festival and we present to you the first batch of movies. We made it! – the participants for taking up the challenge to make the movie, you for strongly supporting the festival and we for making it in the nick of time (you have no idea what happened behind the closed doors 12 hours ago :) ).

It was nice to see the fun the participants have had in making these movies. The utter joy of making these films off their mobile phone camera, their videocams, handicams and whatever cams they could get their hands on (some very professional cameras too!) – to get the movie they had inside them out for the world to see.

It’s now your time to see these wonderful creations, like them, dislike them, criticize them… but do take on the responsibility to ensure the fire in these part time filmmakers keeps burning… intensely than ever…

Just click on the movie poster and the movie will start playing in a popup window…

    10. papai on December 1st, 2007 3:45 am

Nice work guys…. there is a lot of talent at display here….

A lot of very ‘personal’ emotions at display here…. perhaps none more so than nemesis, rang and minds eye

      minds eye :- Awesome story and executed really well. Just dont spread the idea :w;
nemesis :- Very brutal depiction of a trapped artist. Reminds me of gogol’s Nevsky Prospekt.
Rang :- Brilliant message and conceptwork. Beautiful.

kudos to all the budding filmmakers…… hope you have a great future ahead…

    11. Sanjay on December 1st, 2007 4:32 am

    15. Sanjay on December 1st, 2007 5:03 am

The first too are indeed not good to see….but see the third one….After 8 years….much better than the above….it generates your interest to watch more of them…..By this I don’t mean After 8 years is a brilliant movie….but a good try to make a sad love story in just a minute…..and yeah more than anything else it was Beethoven’s music which really made the movie good and worth watching…

    16. ashwin on December 1st, 2007 5:11 am

its a good effort by pfc………i saw some movies every one tried their ideas well……..i liked the movie scintillatin flame and perfect plan………sf movie is a good movie…….the darkness in that movie showin the darkness surroundin india was an excellent idea………..good work mahesh…..:)>-

It’a really a nice effort by all of you guys (though there are some who do not really deserve this comment !!) but still to mention some cinemas like NEMESIS, PUDDLE JUMPER, RANG can seriously ring a LOUD BANG amidst the sleepy “INTELLECT” minds…….Watch it..and you will enjoy (if you can THINK !!)….KUDOS to You ALL!!!!

    40. tarun mahajan on December 1st, 2007 6:31 am

Is this the first virtual film festival ever?
Oz, this was a great idea after all.
I suppose the movies and the comments will get more interesting over the next few days.
My PC modem burnt out this evening ,I may not be able to follow the festival hour-by-hour:(

    55. tarun mahajan on December 1st, 2007 7:03 am

dude i just stood up for sumthin’ that i was a part of not wondering if i was between classes or masses, slum dwellers or intelligentia;)

    56. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 7:04 am

      To all

      Indraneel –
“Rolled Urge – Stylised but not much else – a message is there – repititive – why?? – 2 *”

      Ankur Pandey –
‘Rolled Urge(why were the scenes repeating?)”

Well friends, its nice to have a discussion(albeit mini) on my film. Both of you have asked the same question, why are the scenes repeating?

I can give you two hints-:
1)The film is not an anti-smoking film, but about the efficiency of anti-smoking campaigns(among other things).
      2) Read the synopsis – “The mode of denial…”

      Sanjay
      Thanks.

      Varun
      “Interesting representation”.
Can you elaborate? P.S – I liked your film.

P.S – Did anyone notice the ‘black’ clad man standing leaning against the wall, among the sea of ‘white’ clad people?

    57. tarun mahajan on December 1st, 2007 7:09 am

hey anuj, i liked yr film…

    58. arnab bhattacharya on December 1st, 2007 7:13 am

@Indraneel –> dont mind but I am just asking you one thing you told that my film (nemesis) has good concept but still you gave 1*..why?/ As i am finding that all others are praising the idea…
      dont mind…

    59. Ankur Pandey on December 1st, 2007 7:24 am

PLAYBACK, you portray real ‘ad hominem’
(will make you scriptwriter if I ever get to make a film titled ‘ad hominem’ ;) )

@ ANUJ, ahem! I am all open to mystical interpretations, but expecting audience to sit inside your head is too much to ask for. Next you would say that the plant beside the chair was the symbol of hope in the gloomy and sorrowful surrounding.

(No offense meant to anyone, just constructive criticism)

    60. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 7:33 am

      ANKUR

Well, thanks, the plant did mean something. A tulsi plant’s kept on the right side of the dead body in Hindu funerals. But I do like your interpretation as well. Thanks.

It isn’t too much of a inside-my-head situation, is it? Its not that complicated as well. A mode of denial and a process repeating again and again. Isn’t the connection simple?

    61. Ankit Choudhary on December 1st, 2007 7:47 am

      Ankur,
Nobody has asked you to sit inside the director’s head, you give your own interpretations and we are happy with it, just as your interpretation of that tulsi plant.
As far as who am I, I edited Rolled Urge.

    62. Subrat on December 1st, 2007 8:41 am

Ankur Pandey, Anuj Malhotra, Tumpy Bhattacharya -thanks for discussing your movies.

Anuj – I did notice the person in black (possibly the dark force which makes the smoker light up despite repeated messages). Thanks for getting the Tulsi plant into discussion as well.

It will be good to have other filmmakers whose films are being discussed quite often as well – Anand Kadam of Mind’s Eye, Madhav of Puddle Jumper and Puneet Gupta of KL. Please bring on your actors as well as people seem to have liked them as well

    63. Arun on December 1st, 2007 8:43 am

Sky ship – Great Concept, Cute Kid, Wud have loved to see that without the compression..

    64. Dhruv on December 1st, 2007 8:48 am

      Saw al the films…

Here are my opinions on what I thought to be the 5 best

      5) Mind’s Eye – Not to be offensive. But its the most overrated film here. Its predictable from the word go(its the most overused twist plot device in the world, apart from “Its all a film). But in a relative context, it is well made. the glass reference is brilliant. 3*

      4) After 8 Years – Nice concept. Use of the momentary passin light to bring about a recognition is excellent. The romantic things in a romance :) . The concept of a letter was a little sloppy though. 2.5*

      3) The Nemesis – The image of the flower(creativity, liberation) suddenly being
broken by a shout(reality) is well done. A much underrated film. 2.5*

      2) Rolled Urge – Technically the best by far(along with what is at number 1). They have shown a same set of events almost three times in a minute, without rushing it. Perfect editing. There is a written message, but is that the message after all(after what Anuj said). Its real mindfuck. Well done. 4*

      1) The Game – Superb editing. Amazing visuals. Great camerawork, which can be noticed when an analogy is established between the character in the game( MANHUNTER), and the child’s walking. Brilliant again.

      4*

    65. Karthik on December 1st, 2007 8:49 am

KLPD – Couldn’t make the head or tail of it.Guys get some sense, you could something better in a minute

Mind’s Eye – really cudnt make wat the directors wants to convey.

Sky ship – Kid’s Cute, beautiful concept conveyed in a minute..text wud’ve been clear..

    66. Dhruv on December 1st, 2007 8:49 am

      sorry, Mind’s eye is 2*…

    67. Debjyoti on December 1st, 2007 8:50 am

“The Nemesis” and “One minute of local Kunfu” are realy good. The acting is perfet in Nemesis. But the last sequence was bit unclear , I mean the picture. And the comedy in One minute kunfu is good…Best of luck for both the directors.

    73. Indraneel on December 1st, 2007 10:00 am

Anuj..your interpretation of denial and therefore repitition does not sit well with me..as more people see your short, you’ll find the same issue cropping up as it is a 1 min film that you had started with a bang. But, it is my POV…all the best..there will be people here who will support you!

    74. Prat on December 1st, 2007 10:03 am

Well I liked Mobile phobia and Minds Eye. All the best guys

    75. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 10:10 am

      Indraneel

I hope this stays a meaningful debate(as it is now).

“your interpretation of denial and therefore repitition”
Notice the order. I think denial is a consequence of repetition, rather than it being vice-versa. Repetition is a consequence of adamance. I hope that makes my point clearer. I am free to elaborate.

Second, I am thankful to you for choosing to give me your views. :)

    76. samrat on December 1st, 2007 10:13 am

      loved KLPD, After 8 years..

      will watch others too….

      @OZ

KLPD is a kickass film but i think the rules said that one is supposed to use copyrighted songs…

i doubt whether the makers got the rights for songs by Akon and Junoon.

nevertheless the songs sound amazing and perfectly fit in the movie

    77. Indraneel on December 1st, 2007 10:14 am

Arnab..you had the best concept so to say in today’s collection..but the implementation with a storytelling process that could have been much more than what emerged..was it you the actor..or somebody else..because it got tardy there, my POV..don’t get hassled..1 min films are tricky that way..you fall in love with many shots..or you dont have too many good shots..or the scrpt does not have enough draft detail!!!
But..as a viewer I feel that you have it in you to do much better..You may still win..who knows!!

    78. Ashok on December 1st, 2007 10:16 am

Sky ship nice one.. well depicted about our minds when we were also young..

there are a few which I couldnt understand much what the director wants to coney us..

    79. Madhav on December 1st, 2007 10:18 am

Thanks to all those who watched Puddle Jumper.
I thought it would be a nice movie to shoot for a single minute festival. I’m glad some people are reacting positively to it.
I see some criticism and negativity on this page.
Brothers and sisters, relax. This is creative expression, we will always have people beating us down and calling us names even before the “release”. Don’t take it to heart and just do what you do.
For others asking about the actress of Puddle Jumper, we’re lucky to have her perform this for us as a favour. She’s extremely talented and I think she has a great future in the creative field.
All the best to the other filmmakers. As i said earlier, keep doing what you do, regardless of what they tell you. To quote one of my favorite bands, Pearl Jam: “I am Mine”. And no one else’s. Fight the good fight.

    80. Indraneel on December 1st, 2007 10:21 am

Anuj..I get your drift..but denial is a disorder that I consciously do not confuse with any other action / activity.

Let me be a little simplistic here..We all copied in exams..we passed..moved on..and we do not talk about that to others during our adult life. Why?? Denial..Because we are ashamed. Suppose I had to tell it to someone..would I keep telling about it…may look stupid to you..but “hard hiiting communication” needs to be fed “dheere se”, to me at least..otherwise you were good.

    81. Madhav on December 1st, 2007 10:23 am

Anuj, thanks for saying you liked our film.
What Varun meant by “interesting representation” was that you showed the “urge” looped. It was very cool and showed the cycle that ensues in addiction, regardless of warnings and reprimands. Good job, keep it going.

    82. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 10:31 am

      To

      Indraneel
I am sorry I was not clear vis-a-vis my elaboration on the denial-repetition chain. First-:
      1) In my film, two DIFFERENT parties experience the two separate feelings, its not the same person.
      2) These feelings may be mutually independent of each other. One might not lead to another, and then again, one might.

I, at this stage, am admittedly a little apprehensive about explaining the whole film. I wish more interpretations would come. I hope I am not being condescending. I can only say that the smoker’s denial stems from the fact that that stick in his hand might harm him. He IS guilty.

      Madhav

Thanks. Its my editor’s idea there. I just tried to solidify it.
Urge in a loop. Thats where the ‘ROLLED’comes from. Apart from the obvious meaning( a cigarette), ofcourse.

    83. Indraneel on December 1st, 2007 10:38 am

Anuj..I think you need to have more people responding to your effort than just a few now. I am no Raja Sen and don’t pretend to be a huge film student. My take on all films is whether they are capable of getting my attention in the first run.
Also, I am a bit hung up on the mettle of the story always.
      So, cool..don’t explain..probably, yours is a masterpiece..just dunno yet..me!the unfortunate!!

    84. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 10:42 am

    85. arnab bhattacharya on December 1st, 2007 10:53 am

@Vinod…Well Vinod, just I am trying to say what was going on my mind when i made the film..I meant the voice of father(family) to be the voice of the practical realities of life i.e. our work, job, fight for survival & then i tried to show that even if a person is very much inclined to his creative side(here its film-making) he(most of them) gives up for survival & thus killing the creative soul within oneself..

    86. Indraneel on December 1st, 2007 10:55 am

Hey everyone, just chimiing in with my thoughts :

      After 8 years – a different twist
Breaking news – there was something to it that I liked
Good times – great concept, but I feel you could’ve done without the goofiness in those quick shots. I thought the music track you used just didn’t fit in.
Khidki – In a world of god-fearing believers, this film says something about both, fear and God.
KLPD – funny, how did you get away with using all those music tracks? Tell me you bought all those rights ! ;)
Mind’s Eye – I could tell the ending, but it was really well executed.
Mobile Phobia – funny. Although shouldn’t it have been called Mobile Frenzy? I couldn’t see any phobia, unless I missed something.
Puddle Jumper – shot beautifully, although I must say I didn’t get it. Don’t worry, I’m very dense so I’ll need to watch it again. :)
Rolled Urge – relevant. I don’t think your film had anything to do with Anurag Kashyap’s No Smoking though. P.S. After reading your comments, it seems I might’ve misunderstood. Yeh bhi phir se dekhunga …

I think there should be a special mention for blindness. There were atleast 3 films with a theme of blindness. Some inspiration from Gajraj Rao’s Holi maybe ….. :-?

    88. Devils Advocate on December 1st, 2007 11:57 am

Great work thus far, Films that have stood out for me are: Puddle jumper, Minds Eye, KLPD(although I agree with the music rights concern) and the Game. Can’t wait to see what else is in store for tomorrow

    89. Devils Advocate on December 1st, 2007 12:00 pm

@ the creator of 8 years, was your story inspired by O Henry’s short story?

    90. Pratik on December 1st, 2007 12:03 pm

      @Anuj (Rolled Urge)

Ok, I saw it again and I think I get the idea. I still like it.

      @Madhav (Puddle Jumper)

What’s the relevance of the empty glasses? And who’s that guy in the background who calls out to the woman?

    91. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 12:10 pm

      Pratik

Thanks. Can you give me an indication of what you think the idea is?

I was busy for the entire day and once i was back to my place the first thing i did was checking PFC movies and comments…i was really very happy and overwhelmed after reading creative criticism about Mind’s eye….actually i had written a short story called mind’s eye some months back….i had to cut it short and change lot of stuff to accomadate in a min….guys this was my first attempt of using a video cam(na not even family videos…)….and you cant understand how glad i am…i was not sure that i could do this………PFC has really given a wonderfull chance to all the common guys like me who only dreamt of this but never had a chance…..OZ and others you guys rock man and thanks a ton….

    95. Pratik on December 1st, 2007 12:53 pm

      @ Anuj

What I took from the film was that no matter how many times you tell a smoker that it’s ‘injurious to his health,’ he will have another smoke as long as he wishes so. The more you ram it in his head, the more he denies it. Is this in conformance with the original idea?

      @ Nikhil Singh

I think the idea of the letter was sloppy. I have no better ideas. The concept is nice though.

    96. Anuj Malhotra on December 1st, 2007 1:04 pm

      Pratik
You are quite right. Thats why the loop. Thats why its NOT an anti-smoking film(I might not even be concerned with that). Its a film about the pro-anti-smoking messages that a smoker is subjected to and how he reacts to them. Without sounding too arrogant, can I ask two more questions-:
      a) What could the sound of constant running water mean?
b)Why is that sound and the cigarette being lit the only two sounds that can be heard?

    97. oz on December 1st, 2007 1:29 pm

      - I would like to “warn” a couple of people here to stop negatively criticizing unnecessarily other filmmakers’ movies and praising your own made movies by masking your own comment name and using a fake one. Please keep this festival clean or I’m gonna reveal your names out in the open and withdraw your films from the festival.

    98. Pratik on December 1st, 2007 1:33 pm

      @ Anuj

Ok, I didn’t even realize the sound of running water; I thought it was meant to be a pronounced silence. Now that you tell me, I hear it! :d Hmmmm … now why should there be running water … ? The only connection I can make is that water stops the fire that lights a cigarette. Is it that the smoker quits smoking only when he dies? …

I thought it was an anti-smoking film when I first watched it. Not so any more.

Your film is deep, dude! Good stuff …

      GAME
It is one of the short films that has stunned me with its superb editing, technicals and camera angles. but the theme lacks its standard. its just an old wine in a new bottle.

      ratings-3/5

      THE NEMESIS
I found the script more of an emotional failure than a creative excellence. Any passionate person goes through the same phase when he is detained from doing that particular thing. i understand the directors emotional point on that and would request not to take personally. the film could have been more clear and more aesthetic. the black and white sequances should have been more highlighted as that forms the layout of the present consequence.
      purely an emotional effort…
      ratings 1.5/5

      ROLLED URGE
the start could have been better… it was very abrupt.
the concept, frames and composition are brilliant. though very old but the added textures of denial of the truth by the smoker, the repitions and the clues are extraordinary- the film defines the aesthetics very distinctly and stands apart in its style and identity- the whole film will be different to different individuals. cheers to Mr. malhotra.
the editing is brilliant but i felt the frames moved faster, as if running to conclude on time.
The lead actor still had scope to utilise and comeout with something better.
a master piece in its trait.
      ratings-3.5/5

      Explaining ‘Ad Hominem’

I had hated to do it, but finally I have to write the explanation here, as everyone has panned it. (No offense meant, the blame is entirely mine).

What I had attempted to show is that a seemingly sensible and rational guy discuss about his ’society for promotion of cosmic insights for humans(SOP-CH)’ but gets progressively intrigued by the questions that are asked, and silences his opponents by making ‘ad-hominem’ statements (personal attacks/prejudices).

    106. Madhav on December 1st, 2007 2:50 pm

Pratik, thanks for your interest in Puddle Jumper.
The glasses emptied in quick succession signify a tryst with alcoholism. We blurred the last one to give a feel of inebriation.
The man in the alley shouting out to the girl represents a relationship gone sour.
Each cutaway from the puddles is a possibly regrettable scenario.
Hope you liked the “rat” too.

Hindu funeral rites and rituals heh? I don’t know anything about them. So I googl-ed and find that water is used to purify the soul during the funeral. But why just a sound effect? Why not include that as a visual? I’m not questioning the execution, just want to see how you went about making it.

The negative response with proper explanations also will help me in the long run. Thanks to them too!! But only few (i will not name ) has rejected my film without giving any concrete reason..Anyhow everyone has a point of few..Within the film makers of day 1 I am awaiting yours comments (though i have received from few)

The water connection – In Hindu rituals and rites, a body is meant to be burnt near a river or a water body.(Though its seldom done that way). The sound you hear is supposed to be the river nearby. Though ofcourse, even that cannot be taken literally. Its a symbol for something. What could that be? :)

Could not see all the movies. Among the few i saw, I would like to give the credits to “Nemesis”. In just a short span of 1 min, Arnab managed to give a complete picture of the turmoils and obstacles one faces in pursuit of dreams. Many times he meets the end in the struggle. Arnab’s “Nemesis” rightly projected this.

Thanks to one of my friends that I came to know about this forum and also this online film fest. Great work guys. Kudos to you for making such a thing possible. I took my time to see all the first day entries and here’s what I think
1)after 8 years…..the main theme seems to be inspired by O’Henry ’s “after 20 years”. the premise was good, execution and climax sloppy. especially that letter part was totally uncalled for. a 1/5.
2)game……slickest flick of all the entries. the editing is awesome especially in the dream sequence. easily 3.5/5.
3)I want to see me…..the first few seconds where we see only a montage of black screenshots is good. the rest is very mediocre. 1.5/5
4)JAM…….crappy acting. but the humor was good at places. 1/5
5)KhiDki…….again a good premise. but weak presentation. 1/5
6)KLPD…….kickass acting and background score. crude but effective humor. 2.5/5
7)lost in mall……..I seriously want to have a chat with the director just to know whether I am missing a point or not. above any ratings.;)
8)scintillating flame…….I liked the candle thingy. overall nice concept. 2.5/5
9)sky ship…….nice message. but to get an oscar in 22 yrs. of age?:o the guy must have been a genius.:d 2.5/5
10)mobile phobia……..fun. but why the phobia? a philia or mania should have been more suitable. 1/5
11)rang…..I don’t know whats with this blindness stuff. is it the sympathy angle? the ending’s very sloppy. You didn’t even need to show that the girl’s blind dude. only showing the paper with black color would have sufficed. 1.5/5
12)mind’s eye…..schizophrenia. one of my favorite topics. the ending’s very predictable. but some detailings are very good. like in the first shot the wife pours juice in a glass. and in the last the glass is shown to be empty. 3/5
13)rolled urge……..good editing job. and the overall execution is very good. though the acting could have been a tad better. 3/5 and that disclaimer wasn’t needed. “No smoking” and your film deals with completely different issues, methinks.
14)puddle jumper…….a bit preachy. but undoubtedly the pick of the day. the girl does very well. the glasses emptied in quick succession , the guy calling from behind, jumping from one puddle to another……brilliant stuff! 4/5
15)puppy…….another very well made flick. the use of light, angles in the first shot is wonderful. and the ending……o director, subtlety be thy name. 3.5/5
16)the nemesis……conceptwise one of the best entries on the first day. the acting in the first shot was sloppy. editing’s a bit amateurish. the use of different color schemes for the diferent selfs was commendable. 3/5

And the rest, I thought, was not worth mentioning. Peace!:)

      @ arnab bhattacharya

yes arnav, i will define the aesthetics as i meant to … but to start with i would like to quote Godard “bying a camera and shooting a sequence doesnot make film-maker”

u used a handheld movement for two reasons known to me
      1) to make it realistic.
      2) that served as a charecter.
      (thats my interpretation)

… but in no way the camera should be so louzy… there are many hand held sequences shot to fame- ROCKY BALBOA CLIMBING THE STAIRCASES- to name one. but that never took off the feel and rhythm of the film. ur camera movement was against the feel and felt like MJ dancing with the tune of ustad bismallah khan.

and as a well wisher of ur field i would like to advise that never try to define aesthetics of cinema … it just comes it cant be forced.

whatever u do, be it a piece of sequance, music or a note; close ur eyes and repeat; if that doesnt pain ur closed eyes, or ur beautiful heart or ur hearing then go for it if it disturbs then work on it- thats what i think is the way to get the right aesthetics.

      CHEERS FOR UR FIRST EFFORT-:)>-

Well well buddy, who sayeth that we make or watch films only for aesthetics? Ever heard the term “its so bad that it’s good”? Anti-entertainment is also an art form and there are number of famous films in that genre. And speaking of hand held camera, lousy camera movement et al. , there’s a complete film movement that exercises all those intentionally. Peace!

P.S: As for Godard, here’s another of his quotes……”All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl. ” :d

    140. t! on December 2nd, 2007 10:35 pm

Um, this will be long ;) But, here are my random thoughts on many of Day 1 movies…

A Minute of Local Kung Fu – Funny and fun. An entertaining minute and it looks as if everyone had fun making it…

After 8 Years. Great job at telling a classic story in a different environment on only a minute. The use of music was perfect. I actually loved the letter at the end with the VO and the credits running, effective use of time!

Alice. I loved the fact that it showed action rather than told a story or became preachy. I liked the way it showed her at first dependent, and then independent.

Are You Listening? I liked the news reporter as poetry slam contestant delivery. I like the shots, the way they broke up the narrative. There are a lot of films here that seem to be PSAs, but I enjoy the fact that there are so many entertaining ways to deliver these messages…

The Game. I really loved this from a technical perspective.

Good Times. This put a big smile on my face. Partly, because I can’t believe that people still do the Robot, and partly because it was sweet.

I Want to See Me. I don’t know why this one appeals to me so much, so I won’t think to hard about it. I liked the idea, how it was laid out, and how it was shot…

Mobile Phobia. Cute. OK, Ashwani Thakur probably wanted a better review than cute, so I liked the idea and it was executed very well. Also, I don’t speak Hindi, and the idea behind this film transcends language. I like that.

Puddle Jumper. Brilliant in every way and for every reason. The sound quality of the narrative was a bit distorted, and that in no way took anything away from the idea that she was expressing.

Puppy. Good, fresh idea. I kept waiting for one thing to happen, but the ending was obvious (to a dog owner, at least) in its reality, a nice change from what I expected. I don’t want to spoil the last few seconds, but they were telling and an interesting summary of the dog

    141. Anuj Malhotra on December 2nd, 2007 11:06 pm

      t!
“Rolled Urge. The message delivery reminded me of a high school project. I apologize to Anuj Malhotra if you are a student. But, the film was interesting to watch; well shot, well staged, great use of textures in black and white. I watched it twice because there is a lot to see here. ”

      Thanks for the compliments.
However, the unfortunate human tendency is to respond to the criticisation :( .
When you mentionthe message delivery, is it the written message that you are talking about?
      If it is so, then-:
      1) The written message is NOT the message of the story. Its not even the point of the film.
      2) It is there to pronounce the recursion and make the loop more evident.
      Thanks.

After 8 years: The story with its time limitations was cliched but could actually convey what it set to. Nice attempt. 2 stars. Background score was okay.

Alice: Nice one but to me looked more like old DD’s 1min short messg before some serial. 1 star

Are you listening ?: This one looked nice to me compared to “Alice”. The presentation was full of energy and editing made it look good. Brave attempt. 2 stars

Game: This is a brave attempt. Was wonderfully shot, edited and background music was complementing the visuals. Liked the concept and the way it was shown. 3 and 1/2 stars

Mind’s Eye: Aha. This one was good. 3 stars

Poodle jumper: Okay sort of. 2 stars

puppy: This one is good and innovative. 2 stars

      Rolled urge: Okay. 2 stars.

Most of the shorts, according to me, runs from the urge to say a social message in 1 min. Only exeption was Mind’s eye which tried to fool audience in those 1 mins. But game was the most technically accomplished in this lot.

    152. Anand Kadam on December 3rd, 2007 2:55 pm

@Omprakash…thanks for those kind words for Mind’s eye…

    153. Madhav on December 3rd, 2007 4:16 pm

Puddle Jumper is a very personal film that tells the story of a girl through visual metaphors interspersed with “real” images. Inherently, it is meant to be an introspection and not necessarily a social message.
And Omprakash, granted you didn’t “go” for the film, but at least have the courtesy to spell its name correctly.

    154. t! on December 3rd, 2007 7:28 pm

@ Anuj – First, kudos to you for wanting the feedback!!!

The message delivery had nothing to do with the written message or the recursion. It was the idea of showing a smoker with mourners, showing the consequences of smoking, that I have seen done over and over again in school projects, etc.

Fact is, at first I found the idea trite and done before, but exceedingly well made, which held my attention until the recursion, and at that point I got excited and realized that there is something much, much deeper going on here. That’s why I had to watch it twice!

I watch hundreds of short films a year. Many look alike and deal with the same few themes, although some are technically better than others. There are some themes that tend to be made over and over to the point of being overdone.

Yours could have been one of them, but you made it something else!

@ DPac, it wasn’t a conscious effort to find something good in all the films. I am really enjoying these films. There are a lot of really great things happening here…

@ Anand – sorry for no comments on Mind’s Eye, but I don’t speak Hindi, so I am not commenting on the dialog driven Hindi language films I am seeing. I am the wrong person to do so…

@ Dabba – I am not a Zombie Farmer, but worked on a film called “Zombie Farm”. Nothing to do with the game at all. Interestingly enough, I didn’t even know about the “other” Zombie Farm until about three weeks ago!

Almost through Day 2. I am so excited!

I would definitely like to know why you thought my ideas were a doubt of existence. And get one thing clear mate, I seriously don’t challenge your reviews of any film or anything. Everyone has their own ways of seeing things and I respect that. I only was trying to point out that unlike you have suggested, only aesthetics and out of the world camera work doesn’t make a good film. <):)

    156. Omprakash Seresta on December 3rd, 2007 8:38 pm

@Madhav. Sorry for the spelling mistake. I apologize. I understand that how frustrating it might be for the film maker whose audience is not even paying that much attention. I assure you that I was actually writing about all the movies then I realized that all my comments are straightaway negative in nature. So I decided to keep only those that captivated me. In that sense, I did really “go” for the movie. Puddle Jumper captivated me with its sleek and sepia presentation. But the didactic nature put me off a little bit. I was expecting less voice-overs (less in the sense crisper), for someone like the girl you are showing, a little bit more sarcasm and even cynical.

    157. Anuj Malhotra on December 3rd, 2007 10:10 pm

      “Okay, 2 stars”.
Could you please elaborate a little?

    158. Ankit Choudhary on December 3rd, 2007 10:51 pm

      t!

“Fact is, at first I found the idea trite and done before…… ”

The whole idea of recursion was to show that this concept has been done before and many a times, This is why Anuj has said in the one of the posts above that the film is not about a smoker but about the effeiency of anti-smoking campaigns, and the effect of SO MANY such campaigns on the life of the smoker. :)

      Thank You.

    159. Anuj Malhotra on December 3rd, 2007 10:54 pm

      t!

      Thanks for the appreciation.

The mourners are our representation of the constant warnings(see:anti-smoking campaigns), that a smoker is blatantly subjected to every single day, and how he chooses to refuse it, deny it, and move on. Its a vicious circle. In the larger scheme of things, the film could even be a commentary on how things work with every one of us. There are certain issues in all our lives, certain troubles, which we have accepted as a part of our conscious. We either deny the existence of such troubles, or completely seek bliss in ignorance, instead of trying to do something about it.
But really, I think our novelty lies more in the originality of our treatment, than in the originality of our concept. Though the half-burned face is still something we are proud of. ;)

    160. Anuj Malhotra on December 3rd, 2007 10:57 pm

Those two successive posts, by Ankit and me, should clarify our intentions with the pronounced recursion, the meaning of the mourners, and the intention of the whole film.

this is the best among the films loaded here. the film has portrayed one of the worst attitude of the society but amazingly in a beautiful way.

i give 5 cheers to the director(madhab). the film made me feel that madhab was very sure about what he wanted even the amount of water on the floor and the area of spreading.the film was ready in his mind! the voice over is just perfect with the movement of the charecter… its wonderful to see the film for n number of times… each time i find a new thing.

      @LORD –

      I have a question for you –

      1. How much do you rate Rolled Urge out of 5? Give perfect expaination of you rating, I mean why are you giving these points or why are you deducting it?

    166. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 2:34 am

lets have the best 3 films of the festival here…..

      :-?

    167. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 2:39 am

first let us get 3 top films from each day ….and then select 3 out of them …..what say hemant …:)

    168. Ankit Choudhary on December 4th, 2007 2:41 am

      Well to be honest……

      1. Rolled Urge
      2. The Game
      3. Puddle Jumper

    169. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 2:57 am

well ankit what abt day 2 …and day 3

    170. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 2:57 am

      Well, not a bad idea.

My choice would go with Ankit….

      1. Rolled urge( loved the concept Of Recursive Loop….,liked the film style too):)

      2. Puddle Jumper(okayish film,IMO overrated):)

      3. Game….Nice!

    171. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 2:59 am

well i cant pick from day 1 since my film is also there …..:( .anyways guys pick from other days as well

    172. Madhav on December 4th, 2007 3:01 am

      Lord_ink, t! and No. 1:
Thank you for your kind words of appreciation!

      Lord _ink,
      To answer your questions:
      1. From the moment this was conceptualized I’ve always thought of the girl as the puddle jumper. It feels right and fits well, to me. You’re right about it all being metaphorical.

      2. I followed the rat around for a while and managed to get the right set of shots. The alley where we shot the film is infested and we were lucky to get what was needed for the shot. There was a lot of improvisation.

      Thanks again!
      Madhav

    173. Ankit Choudhary on December 4th, 2007 3:09 am

      Anand Kadam,

The list was for all the 3 days. I think Day 1 was the best and it had the 3 best films of the the three days. And why can’t you pick from Day 1 though your movie is there, just be honest with your opinion, even though you are mentioning your film in the top 3. I was the editor of Rolled Urge, still I meantioned it because I truly think Rolled Urge was the best.

      Hemant,

Thank you very very much. :)

    174. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 3:14 am

      allright…

so its the crew of Rolled Urge!!:d

dude….how did the concept come in?

Also, are you(the editor) and the director very experienced?

    175. Anuj Malhotra on December 4th, 2007 3:25 am

      Hemant

The concept is one of many we had and have.
As for the editing of the film is concerned, we had two major options-:
      1) The recursion that you see
      2) The construction(till the point where he is burnt), and then the deconstruction(where the funeral around him ends and he is back to normal) chain.

Both would have worked well for the conveyance of denial, but I think recursion is surely a better idea, as it covers a longer duration of time.

We are both 18 and 19 respectively, but yes, we have made some short films.

    176. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 3:34 am

      Anuj,

19 is too immature for this, man….

i can just say Great work by your team.

am still in a state of denial wrt your work….:d

      :) >- :) >-

    177. Anuj Malhotra on December 4th, 2007 3:37 am

      Hemant

“19 is too immature for this,”
I construe this in a positive sense. Thanks very much.

    178. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 3:49 am

      Guys,

I couldn’t complete my film for the festival but i am really enthusiaistic about all other films here….

I must say “We do have lot of talent still left in India”( in reference to directors like SLB and KJ)….But thats again just my opinion!!;)

And again, why are people not discussing films here….We have had some real good films here, in the festival but there are only few left who are enthusiastic on day 4…look at Rolled Urge, the entire crew hooked on PFC, the Puddle jumper….director’s interested…

I think thats the most important thing…Being committed to film-making….dont just wait for the results…Come on,its about FILMMAKING….

NB-not intended to hurt opinions or responses!!:)

    179. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 4:08 am

Hey hemant ….reply to 178 …i am the maker of Mind’s eye …can you let me know your comments on the film ..good or bad ..its all mine …

    180. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 5:33 am

      Anand,

      Thanks for asking my opinion….

To be honest, the film has been done pretty well but dont you think the concept is over-used….I mean,in this festival only,i saw 3 films on the same concept…

But, inspite of that….Mind’s eye is one of the nicely handled concepts….I liked it….would rate it 3.5/5….

i am sure you can do so much more with the film..:)

    181. Ashwani Thakur on December 4th, 2007 5:39 am

      Wrong Title :d

BOY I named my film mobile phobia and now after the sweet comments I actually realised that it might have been something else. Thanks (Indraneel, vinod, prat, pratik, the Optimist, Shetty, the none and T!)
      for all your comments.

    182. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 5:42 am

Thanks for your comments Hemant …i could have done more thats for sure ..this is what i could do with all the available resources ….i am here in uk since aug ..dont have many indian friends and those who are,are all my Team leads and seniors …so i had to change the context of the story and cast me and my wife (grateful to her that she agreed to act) …you can check the story on my blog if u want ..its very diff from this …and also this is my first experience with a video camera and i am happy enough that it is atleast appretiated ….:)

    183. RK on December 4th, 2007 5:50 am

      @Anand (182),
How you arranged BMG for this shortie? The moment your camera follows the male actor inside the gallary on the way to inner room, BMG is quite good and camera also goes with good and controlled speed. and that blackened screen was also quite good.

    184. RK on December 4th, 2007 5:59 am

      Liked three good films here.

      I want to See
      Puddle Jumper
      Sky Ship

      —-

@Madhav (Puddle Jumper), you (or your camera person) have seen Anup Singh’s Ekti Nadir Naam ?

    185. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 6:02 am

with all of that, you are a winner already..:)

      I salute you bro ^:)^

Kungfu, Alice, Khidki,KLPD, Mind’s eye, Rang, Recycle Reuse, Rolled Urge, The perfect, Transaction, Who

can anyone tell me whats so great abut PUDDLE JUMPER and SKY SHIP???

    188. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 6:05 am

i used a very normal digital camera (Not a digicamcorder) samsung nv3 …while taking the shot my wife held the camera and followed the actor (Thats me)…she is pretty good with camera steady :) ….only two of us were involved in the making ..so you will never find both of us in one shot coz the other one was with the camera … it was damn fun …as i told earlier i had diffrent story in my mind but due to lack of resources i had to go with this one ….may be next time …not may be surely next time :)

    189. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 6:14 am

      RK,

I would like to differ….Agreed all the films are good in their own right but i would still want to ask you..

On what basis do you call films like KLPD and One Minute Kungfu better than Rolled Urge??

No personal differences with any of the teams but if a cinema buff appreciates KLDP and Kungfu, alice or Mind’s eye(sorry Anand,i hope you agree that there are films lil better than yours)then i dont think there’s need of such festivals….

Arent we here to encourage classy cinema….I mean, personally i would rate Rolled Urge the best film(The dir is 18/19….No age isnt the factor, look at the concept, his technique, the style)thats worth watching….

I dont mind puddle jumper also(though i said its over rated, there’s still some good editing involved), The game(amazing concept)…

Films like KLDP( a bunch of chichore’s and dhinchak-dhinchak music) or kung-fu(comedy with action),they do deserve to be encouraged but honestly of my opinion, these flms cant take the credit from good works here….

    190. Enjum Hamid on December 4th, 2007 6:27 am

“Good Times”: Very nice interception of music and cool disappearance of the protagonist being replaced by the father in the doorway. Good effort Ali!

    191. RK on December 4th, 2007 6:38 am

      @Hemant11,
In comment 186 I have not mentioned films in decreasing order. Along with (I want to See,
Puddle Jumper, and Sky Ship) I liked those films on first day of Festival.
      Different film for different aspects.
PJ- I asked Director if he or his Cameraman has seen Anup Singh’s Ekti Nadir Naam. If this film is seen then later we can discuss more.
PJ spreads feminine touch in a beautiful manner
      on screen.
Kungfu is a fun film with well arranged action shots.
KLPD’s main character has got very animated face to express emotions and that fetched my attention.

Rolled Urge is good but perhaps the fact that had seen exactly similar skit during college days, and few scenes are repeated two times reduced the impact. Use of B&W certainly increase its viewing experience and we have to consider if same impact was brought with colours also?
All through the film, I was getting impression that its done on a stage and camera is following characters. Or may be I could not get the real essense of this film. Will watch it again. This is amazing to know that Director is so young.
Above all I am not counting films in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 order. Jury of PFCOne festival has to spend energy for that.:)
Personally I dont favour any attempt to select no 1 in the field of art as its not possible in this field. Few good can share same place. Every year few deserving people have to face injustice because there is only one award for no 1 position. This is ridiculous.
I am not sure if basic idea behind such festivals is to reward best but to invite many entries and promote them and few natuarlly will attract attention of more people based on their merits.

    192. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 6:44 am

      @ hemant ..
i think RK is right ….art is subjective …every one will have their differnet take on a subject ….

    193. hemant1 on December 4th, 2007 6:47 am

yeah….lets rely on PFC for the judgements.

We can just vent our opinions….

which according to you are the 5 best films,RK??:)

    194. Anand Kadam on December 4th, 2007 6:56 am

Here is my top 5 list (Not in order):
      Mind’s eye (Can’t be that modest :) )
      Puddle jumper
      Sky Ship
      Missing

    195. Madhav on December 4th, 2007 7:03 am

      Hey RK,
No I haven’t watched the film that you have mentioned here. Why do you ask?
Also I was the cameraman for the film, so we both haven’t seen it :)

      All the best guys.
      Madhav

    196. Anuj Malhotra on December 4th, 2007 7:12 am

      RK

I do not mind the criticism, I do not mind it all if its based on a fair judgement.

      Your statement-:
“few scenes are repeated two times ”
Not few scenes, ALL the scenes are repeated twice.(btw, they are shots). One of the scenes is repeated thrice. But thats the whole point of the film. Do watch it again. Please do before passing a judgement. I, and Ankit, have used up half of our preparatory holidays to try to explain why there is recursion.

When you say you have seen the concept in school skits, what exactly do you mean? Could you elaborate?

Its fine if you got the feel of a stage. I never made an effort to ensure than someone does NOT get a feel of a stage. An ensemble in a room generates that feeling automatically.

Kindly request a rewatch and the resulting comments.
      Thank You.

    197. RK on December 4th, 2007 7:12 am

      @Madhav,
As you (and your cameraman, means you again) have not watched Anup Singh’s film, now you must watch it. That film may appeal you a lot and subsequently may help also.:)

      Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments and support for SKY SHIP.

    201. RK on December 4th, 2007 7:42 am

      @Anuj Malhotra,
Good to see your attachment with your film. :)

Surely others cant have that grip over any film by simply viewing it as its maker can have because he makes it and spends many hours or perhaps days in the preparation. But That kind of PhD on any film is neither required from the audience. you may not be knowing about rest 123 films present in the festival as their respective makers know.
I am not giving any judgement on your film because I am not judge for your film. May be judges of festival like your film as you like it. My opinion or others opinions dont affect that decision of the jury members. So rest assured about that thing.
Rest in normal case audience have to be earned by the film itself.
Why I said stage, becasue when you use camera and use close up shots then character should be having some expression on the face. Your character acted like present on the stage where audience see the character from a distance and mostly their movements, major make up (like half destroyed face of your character) will be visible but what he is carrying on his face will be hardly visible from a distance. Though you wished to show his mental conflict!
You have made it so you know why you repeated your scenes (shots) but do audience also get same meaning from your order of presenting the shots?
Just from the begining when match stick is rubbed at match box, we hear sound but no flame. Its all dark. It could have made a hell lot of difference if you had shown flame after first or second sound of friction between stick and match box. Rather you see face of person, person and flame in some other synthetic light.
Then you repeat your slogan also.
What shortcomings you find in your short film? as you have made it so you must be knowing where your film is weak? :-?
Dont worry all films here have shortcomings and that confession does not decrease your chances of winning over others.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra should take some inspiration from you and your team. You guys are so religiously supporting your film. This die hard attitude is required to win awards :)

    202. Ankit Choudhary on December 4th, 2007 8:16 am

      RK

“But That kind of PhD on any film is neither required from the audience. you may not be knowing about rest 123 films present in the festival as their respective makers know.”

“You have made it so you know why you repeated your scenes (shots) but do audience also get same meaning from your order of presenting the shots?”

Nobody asks the audience to give the exact meaning of the shots as the director, you just have to give our own interpretations, read some of the above comments, a few users said the meaning of tulsi plant, sound of water, etc.etc, and they all were good interpretations. That’s what we expect as makers from the audience, to give their own interpretation.
You will be surprised to know that the director(Anuj Malhotra) and the editor(me) have different interpretations of the recursion thing in the film, and yet both of them fit correctly, like ways audience may have their own ones.

And nobody in this world will force you to like the film, but please make an honest attempt to try and understand it.

    203. Ankit Choudhary on December 4th, 2007 8:20 am

      Hemant

Thankyou very much for rating ROLLED URGE as the best film of the festival and above all thank you for your words of encouragement.:):)

    204. RK on December 4th, 2007 8:31 am

      @Ankit,
If I, as an audience, have to read a book first to understand a film or to get right kind of interpretation or if I have to read comments to get that level of understanding then I find myself as an audience not suitable for that film./:)
Whatever mathematics I know did not help me this time to decode completely this Recursion. :-?
You find it dishonest attempt to see your film? Your cinematographer comes with so long comment in praise of light, and camera work but your film lacks since begining, it misses the point that in dark, first it will be light of the flame of the burnt stick and later artificial light source (whatever you guys used) will come in to existence.
Its very first scene of any film which set the mood of the audience. Sorry for pointing out small thing but you guys are trying to promote your film forcefully.
I repeat again, Jury members have nothing to do with comments made here. They will judge the films independently. They may not be having time to go through these comments made here.
This is good you as editor and director have different interpretation of same film you guys have made and both versions fit very well.
Have heard that sometimes director and editor think differently about same subject.:)

Thanks and sorry if you feel we are forcefully promoting the film or forcing it down your throat.

Its fine if you think that the slogan appearing twice is an error. Thanks for pointing out that the sound of a flame being lit should also necessarily be accompanied by the visual showing it happening. I also apologize if my ‘dead body’ had very minimal expressions. Thanks for pointing this out, and we appreciate your earnest effort.

Now when you say ["sound of a flame being lit should also necessarily be accompanied by the visual showing it happening"]
I understand that (because knowledge comes in a flash) your main character is knowingly living in darkness so light of flame does not enlighten the space around him and hence you, your cameraman and your editor have decided not to show light of flame initially:-?

@ Hemant1 – in regards to a couple of your comments. 1. Puddle Jumper has to be my favourite so far. One think that I find frustrating about film is that so many people do not portray women well. The way we feel, the way we act, the decisions we make. It is as if we are all one cliche or stereotype. So, to have a film about a woman making bad decisions and almost embracing them, jumping from one to the next unapologetically, speaking like a young woman and not some man’s idea of what a woman of her “type” should sound like was refreshing. Using the puddles to represent bad decisions was fresh and amazing. I loved this film on so many levels…

And, the initial call for entries for PFCOne stated, “The whole purpose is to encourage the film maker in each one of you.”. Therefore, while passionforcinema may exist to celebrate the best of world cinema, the festival itself was created to allow community participation, to encourage creativity and most of all, fun. It isn’t about, “encouraging classy cinema”, it is about celebrating cinema and those who love it. I think there are 124 examples of that here this week…

Thanks Unclad Fakir, Debjyoti and Ankur Pandey for the :) >-. Thanks a lot to Vasan too, especially for the personal praise.
A Minute of Local Kung Fu simply intends to be a minute of entertainment. That’s all. I see that people either really like it or find it beneath contempt :d. That’s okay, although I’d have been pretty cut up about criticism if I were a few years younger.
