Sandeep, sorry you didn’t like our movie ‘Disown’. But i think you got it all wrong. We were not preaching

  7. Vasanbala on December 2nd, 2007 2:05 am

Kabir Singh - where did you shoot the film? what location? good job =d>

    Liked the concept of “Less…”

Terror at the drive in show - good job…

Cacography - “Cacography symbolizes a form of expression whose state of existence is at peril.”
    Very Profound!!! :-?

    “missing” TODAYS best !!!

    well done !!!

  9. Pratik on December 2nd, 2007 4:12 am

My two cents for the films of day 2 :

Antonyms - cute, brings a smile to your face. Although, the ending comes at you almost out of nowhere. I presume you needed more than a minute to show your material (I had a similar problem with mine).

Defence Mechanism - nothing particularly great but I like “Science - apne bas ki baat nahin. I think I’m a good poet.” Somehow, this line was very appealing.

    Disown - nice, I like!

Do Diwane - nice, but again, needs a little more time to be more effective.

Dolly - Shot and edited very well, but I didn’t seem to get the idea.

Endless Xpektations - Beautiful! I loved it! I was smiling within the first 15 seconds, that voice was magic! Of all the socially relevant films so far, yours was the most effective. Good stuff …

Hamdard - The concept was very good, could’ve been executed a little better though.

However You Say It, Wear It - condom ! :d

Silent Mode - Nice concept, could’ve been executed better.

Stop Pollution - mere ko ek cheez yaad rahegi : “sayeenkdon” (that pronunciation)!

Terror at the Drive-in Show - great visuals, that’s about it.

8th Dress - if that isn’t, then who is the daughter?

    Orange Ball - beautiful visuals

Unforseen - don’t mean to question your execution, but the idea could’ve made for a very good light-hearted film, especially if there was more focus on the ‘chase’

Time Machine - samjha nahin, ho sake toh please explain thoda sa.

  10. Shekhar Shimpi on December 2nd, 2007 4:20 am

    Hi guys ;
thanks for watching my film “Terror at the drive in Show”,.
I forgot to say thanks to my friend Reba who lend me her toy cars to shoot the film, and Nitin Veturkar (Boogeyman) for his real Car ,..
    :)

It was fun doing this Movie,.

  12. kabir on December 2nd, 2007 4:50 am

    vasanbala,
the filmwas shot in chandigarh and it’s outskirts for the poultry sequence.i hopeyouliked it.

    @pratik
sorry if i could not get my idea across to you.but i triedto keepit as ambigious as possiple ,because i feel cinema takes the easy option by showing things and the wholeidea is tocontrol and supress what you want to evoke.
otherwise it works out to be an easy option if you show what is to be seen and registered.
anyways the film is about incest , and how a brother physically violates his sister.
the voice of the elderly figure could be the mother of dolly, who has a gut feeling like most mother do of something wrong happening between the two siblings ,and is seen as a warning.

an intresting thing to note is that in most homes,it is always the brother who tells the sister about the stories of the birdsand the bees, so there first brush with anything sexual is with there brothers.
and in a country like india things like this happen all the time, you read it in the agony aunty columns , but the fact is that it is never discussedin the open , and if a sister is violated by her brother and goesto her parents saying my brother did so and so to me, it is the girl who get’s slapped by her parents ,saying you being a woman must have led your brother on.

apart from that i triedto bring akind of connection between the isles of the poultry farm and the aisles of the supermarket ,suggesting a rural -urban shift.

coming backto the idea of incest in india not being discussed in the open , i used the egg and the voice of the motherly figure as the reminders of the episode between the two siblings ,never directly the brother,

    Hi guys,

awesome job again… congrats to all of you…

for me the pick of the day was endless xpektation… totally awesome… and the artist was a real good actor.. All in all the movie had good message, strong production value and nice bg score and proper direction…

antonymn was good too… but the ending spoiled it IMO.. too yash chopra type :x … ( yaaa go ahead n call me a cynic )

  14. varun viswanath on December 2nd, 2007 5:13 am

thanks for watching (and talking about) puddle jumper yesterday

great movies today, and i have to agree with popular opinion…the overall quality is much better than yesterday…

there seem to be a lot of public message videos in the entries - in my opinion, pro-condom, anti-hiv, say-no-to-drugs, drive-safely kind of videos are just that…videos. not movies, not cinema. i really appreciate the effort, and some of them are fantastically done…but this is definitely not the right forum for them.

here are a few things i want to say about todays movies -

antonyms - youve used of cliched situations, and packed them very well, i like the movie!

disown - very good camera work, very fitting music, good execution. it has a childish innocence that adds a lot of flavour

dolly - good camera work + photography…the acting was great…love your locations. story is quite unique and was pulled off very well.

endless expectations - very innocent, but cliched in the end. good camera work, very good acting by the boy

hamdard - good acting. it was suspenseful for a while, but then a very predictable ending…that being said, it is a concept that has not been explored before - good on you for making it a film.

missing - i loved the lighting and camera work. the contrast between the playfulness of youth and the responsibility of adulthood has been brought out very well

people say a lot of things - good acting and good dialogues from the lead actor in the last scene…but personally i think this movie was the easy way out of making a real one for this competition. the nerd in me has to say thats some pretty fantastic quality for an n95.

terror at the drive in - excellent lighting, and did you actually make a model drive-in for that? if you did, fantastic work!

the made-man - the medium of video was just not utilised to its potential. wouldve had the same impact if it was just audio

orange ball - excellent concept. there were some scenes where the ball had left the frame, but the angle didnt change…it affected the fluidity a little, but overall - well done, and thanks for showing interest in pfc from half way across the world

time machine - four takes of video, two takes of audio, looped. most other entries seem to have a whole lot more effort put into the writing, filming and packaging.

urge - good acting again, like your previous movie. the lighting was great, albeit evidently unnatural at times, but we are from the brotherhood of zero budgets and table lamps - excellent effort

vijay - great editing, very well shot. great execution of the “you chose what to see” theme.

thanks everyone, looking forward to the next few days.

  15. K J on December 2nd, 2007 6:32 am

    cacography was f**king awesome!
to get such a good concept using such limited tools is extremely laudable…
    zero investment movies made well….
that’s what i wanted to see on pfc….

  16. Shekhar Shimpi on December 2nd, 2007 6:37 am

    Hi Varun Vishwanath,
Yes I did the set for the show,
using toy cars,. Lighting was tough,. But It was fun

  18. varun viswanath on December 2nd, 2007 7:13 am

antonyms - youve used cliched situations, and packAGed them very well, i like the movie!

    just correcting some typos…
great work, fight the good fight

  19. Vinod on December 2nd, 2007 8:27 am

I agree with people when they say that the average quality of the films is better today. But today’s list doesn’t seem to contain any particularly good film like say, The Game, or Rolled Urge, or Puddle Jumper. No offense, but perhaps thats the reason it hasn’t got the kind of response the films generated yesterday.

    My favourites for the day-:

    Less -
Grim concept. The thought of being so irrelevant in the overall context of things is depressing. 3/5

    Missing -
The game(innocence) and the feeding the child(responsibility) were used well as a ironic accompaniment of each other. The casting choice was flawed. The actress did not look like a child. Location was good.
    2.5/5

    Dolly -
The shift from the supermarket, to the poultry farm in itself warrants 1 point. Thats brilliantly executed. Brilliant use of audio(the trolley and then the chickens). However, the execution of the concept is flawed, and without the one line synopsis, a viewer would be confused.
    2/5

    Endless Expectations -
The ending is predictable. Something gives me the feeling that the film could have done better without pretending to address an issue. Nonetheless, leaving the ending out, the energy the rest of the part created is a treat.
    2/5

    Thanks.

  20. K J on December 2nd, 2007 8:53 am

terror at the drive in show will probably win the award for best direction. the guy has serious skills with the medium, and with such limited resources!!
seems like robert rodriguez in the making…..

    :)

  25. suchita b on December 2nd, 2007 9:46 am

Dolly, very well shot film, with well thought of camera angles and shots, good production values, given the one minute duration, the effort and money spent is laudable.

  26. suchita b on December 2nd, 2007 9:49 am

Shekar, since you shot with miniatures, what lighting pattern you used.. and what camera?.. can you specify.. miniature shoots excite me.. am looking for more info..

  27. adesh on December 2nd, 2007 10:03 am

terror at the dirve in show is the most brilliantly executed film of the day (or of the festival, might be…we’ll know soon) Creates fantastic mood, very imaginative. I think you are our robert rodrigez.
I liked endless expections. Missing is very good too.

I :x these gems: people say a lot of things,
terror at the drive in show, and drum roll please….
the orange ball- simply because I have a natural affinity towards abstract visuals. Personally being manipulated by human emotions just doesn’t affect me- no offense to anyone’s movies. Having said that endless xpectations was a really well shot movie, along with humdard and however you say it,wear it.

  30. Praveen K Nair on December 2nd, 2007 10:48 am

This is going to be bloody long!

It was three days to the deadline( the initial one of 15th Nov) when I came to know of PFC. WOW, what a brilliant idea. And what a brilliant opportunity. Top it all, what an awesome set of reward!

Even before I started thinking about what film to make, my mind was fast dreaming about which one of these top artists that I will be spending 2008 with! Will Anurag Kashyap be arrogant and treat me as a rank outsider? Or should I opt to work with Pavan Kaul or Nishikant Kamat as those are one month projects. Longer period of experience you see! Nah, Hansal Mehta it is, the writer in me sure needs a Guru!

    Burst the bubble

  31. Shekhar Shimpi on December 2nd, 2007 10:49 am

Hi Suchita, All I used is simple torch for light, and my Camera is Canon-still 7.1 mega pixel

  32. Devils Advocate on December 2nd, 2007 11:06 am

@ praveen: after reading about your passionate process behind making your film, “Vijay”, I gave it another visit. No exaggeration, I saw it in a totally different light. Its true we do only see what we want to see. I sort of shrugged it off the first time as, oh not another one of those movies. But in all honesty, had any limb missing or mental illness I am sure I would not be thinking the way I do. So I really applaude your effort for showing me at the very least what well thought out filmmaking can do. CHEERS

  33. Mainak on December 2nd, 2007 11:51 am

    Kabir
Your Dolly seems to be my favourite film so far!
    Keep shooting!

  34. Sandeep Chauhan on December 2nd, 2007 12:25 pm

    @Sumanth….

sorry man if i have hurt your sentiments….nothing intended….i was just making the point that we become so objective about some things that we lose the power to think, stand on our own and society is the main culprit……they don’t think….what they need is someone whom they can show upon, their own greatness…..stealing is bad…fine….but what that boy did was not stealing…..that 100 Rs note could have been drained in water, eaten by a cow :)…or hell knows what……in fact instead of being afraid of what society will say….he could have stood by his decision….and gave a thought on what he can do with this 100 Rs for the betterment of his life.

  35. Tanmay on December 2nd, 2007 12:32 pm

Vijay - 3.5/5 - A feel good film abt disability. Liked the positive energy.

Time Machine - 0.5/5 - Nothing worthwhile in it except the catchy background.

The 8th Dress - Funny attempt at humor. Caricature characters and bad acting dont quite help. (1.5/5)

People say a lot of things - 1/5 - Quite artificial. Bad acting.

No Sir - 0.5/5 - An amateurish home video and not really cinema.

However you say it wear it - 2.5/5 - THe funniest aids awareness video I’ve seen. Whacky idea !! Enjoyed it..

Hamdard - Predictable end but the actor was good. 1.5/5

Dolly - Good direction and equally gud camera work. Acting was nice too. 3.5/5

Do Deewane - CUd have been a much funnier film with the same concept. Girl’s acting was nice but guy was really bad. 1.5/5

Disown - Too preachy and impractical. 0.5/5

    Defence Mechanism - Too simplistic !! 1/5

Antonyms - CUte film.. wud hav been more natural had the couple hugged or kissed in the end !! 2.5/5

Cacography - Definitely the best film for today. Loved the background score, the concept, the graphics in the end. Whole thing had an errie feel about it. Way to go Suraj, you got a bright future! 4/5

i also liked the actor in blue shirt in Defense mechanism…very camera friendly….

From all i see here…it is but obvious that all the filmmakers were having tons of fun making it…and it oozes out on the screen…kudos to one and all

  39. Neeraj Mehta on December 2nd, 2007 2:39 pm

    I made Do Deewane.
And, yes the guy’s acting is terrible. Thats me. :)).
BTW, in the other film that I submitted - Two Victims, I have almost no footage :))

Originally, It was a bit funnier with the to-and-fro being a bit longer and funnier but the one minute limit forced to cut it short.

No regrets though, I just hope some you guys had a hint of a smile by the end.

Given, my wife is getting acting compliments means I am earning some serious brownie points. So “Do Deewane” is going to turnout to be a blockbuster for me :)))))

Thanks again for taking the time to view these films and more importantly providing feedback.

I know the amount of effort it took us to put “Do Deewane” together and so I have a lot appreciation for almost all the entries that have been submitted. That said, here is my take on the entries.

    From yesterday,
Killing the Deceased - Good concept. Can be built upon for a really compelling and touching short film.

KLPD: Great Acting. Just like many bollywood films, waste of good talent and resources on a pathetic concept.

Mind’s Eye: Good concept. A little more build up would have made it more compelling.

Puddle Jumper: Couldn’t it have been just a podcast? Visually nice but neither the puddles nor the jumping has any significance, or did i miss something.

    Rolled Urge: Good concept.

    DAY 2 DAY 2 DAY 2

    Antonyms: Good execution. Mediocre concept

Cacography: I dont get it. So in some jobs handwriting is important, yeah so what.

Do Deewane: Its my first short film, and have to admit, the concept is mediocre

Dolly: Awesome execution but it is too deep. The metaphors are way beyond me.

Hamdard: Very nice. You certainly made me smile. Love it.

However You say it, Wear it: Fantastic. You get your message across. Among the public message films, yours is the best.

I should join politics: I liked it a lot. Very sincere. It felt real.

Terror at the drive in: Not much to the story but otherwise it is simply awesome, How did you shoot/edit this? Incredible.

    Cheers!
    -neeraj

    DAY 2 - My picks

  43. Niranjan Rao on December 2nd, 2007 8:01 pm

Dolly, Disown & Endless Xpektations are really worth it. Very good effort. Dont miss.

  44. Madhav on December 2nd, 2007 8:20 pm

    Neeraj,
I’m not a huge fan of explaining things in my film but since you asked (so politely), Puddle Jumper could not be a podcast because each puddle is a metaphor for a “bad” choice. The protagonist walks in them as opposed to around them, unlike most people.
To compliment this abstract representation there are “real world” images of incidents and experiences.
    All the best,
    Madhav

Dear Sandeep, thanks for the rating, yours is the first that I got.

Varun, thanks a ton for the encouraging note in your review. I like the fact that you have seen the positive side of most of the films. All artists need that pep-up.

But I disagree with your comment that films with a social message are just videos and this is not the forum for it. Fiction some of them might not be, but movies they certainly are. And most of them have a story to tell and uses cinema as a medium.

Devils advocate, thank you for re-viewing Vijay. Often, how we feel about a film, or how we interpret it depends merely on the state of mind in which we view it. So, thanks a ton for taking the effort to watch it repeatedly and comment on it.

Tanmay, thank you for the encouragement.

All these reviews, observations and criticisms are highly motivating. Thank you very much guys.

thank you for watching my film “DOLLY”
The metaphors for the film are eggs and
chickens, the story of the birds and the bees sounded to westernized

KLPD: the camera work was great, music was fitting, and the images stick with you, and most importantly it seems to have been done with a lot of fun and truth.

PUDDLE JUMPER: fantastic camera work and editing. Acting was great and pleasing to the eyes. Warm looking film, I especially like the way she says done, done, done.

ANTONYMS: Mani Ratnam meets Yash Chopra .just the right blend.

I SHOULD JOIN POLITICS: I like the way photographs have been used, and the words that come later

    @ Neeraj Mehta

The fun you had in making Do Deewane was quite apparent and yeah the film did bring a smile on my face. Especially liked the dialouge about fridge being used to keep books lol.

Good to see you taking the criticism in a positive manner. I hope you continue making films and keep having as much fun in making then. Enjoying the journey is as important as reaching the destination. :)

And oh yea, you can definitely use your wife for other films too. She seems quite talented !!

    Dolly is good. 3 stars

Dream effect: Nicely shot and well presented. Liked it for its technical excellence. 3 and 1/2 stars

Hungry house: Though, I liked the presentation, the grim shots, the central plot is missing. 2 and 1/2 stars

Terror at the Drive in Show: awesome. Liked the execution. Bravo. 3 and 1/2 stars

The orange ball is good. 3 stars

The unforseen: ha ha.. this one reminded me of a bangladeshi movie where in their penchant (but with limited budget) to create a bollywood kind of scene where hero being encircled by goons on bikes, they showed the goons on bicycles….. Sorry, no offense to the maker. but you did make me laugh. I tried to avoid making any comments for any movie which did not appeal to me. but this one did appeal to me albeit in a different sense… I hope you wont mind it

    My thoughts on Day 2?

Antonyms. A sweet film that I could really relate to. Most of us have had these days with our partners. I do think the ending was too drawn out. At the first glance, the first laugh, the point was given.

    Disown. Loved it.

Dream Dwellers. What a beautiful film. I loved the way Kishor Kumar Keekan was able to see the beauty in everyday life, view the poverty in the same lens, and convey so much with no audio…

Endless Xpektations. I don’t know what to day. This was really well made and beautiful…

Hamdard. The film synopsis gives the film away. Who cares. The acting is well done, it is well shot, and even when the inevitable happened, it still brought a smile to my face.

Heads & Tails. Abrupt ending, but the music rocked, the effects were cool, and it was well shot!

However you say it, Wear it. Really good. Well made, liked the idea of having young people participate in the way they did, and got a laugh at the nicknames at the end. This looks as if it were made for another festival or to be submitted somewhere as a PSA. If so, I hope it does well. It deserves it!

I Should Join Politics. Um, Nirav, you should actually stop making one minute films and explore making longer ones. Really well done.

Missing. Well shot, and a novel way to show a child mother. Great job.

No Sir. This made me laugh out loud!

Resume. Another well made film, and I like the idea, but would have liked to see a firmer relation between the protagonist and the accident that left him in his current state…

Shcizophrenia was lost on me, yet I watched it twice because I liked what Ankur did with the character looking upon himself as if he were an Escher drawing…

Silent Mode. What is funny about this one is that last week I heard a news story about how millions of American’s now suffer from Phantom Phone Vibrations - they think the phone is vibrating when it isn’t. I am one of them ;)

Stop Pollution. I didn’t understand the language (once again, nahi main bolti hindi hoon), but am thrilled that someone broke out the green screen. Or, did you do that on a computer?

Terror at the Drive In. I stopped this just seconds into the film, and then restarted. Freaking BRILLIANT use of models, of portraying the drive-in. Loved the fact that you credit James Whale in the credits, because you captured that old-tyme horror feeling so well…

    The 8th Dress. Funny.

The Made-Man. I really liked this and the direction it went. Good use of dialog and storytelling.

The Orange Ball. Watched this thinking it would be like The Red Balloon, and it was similar. Loved the intentional and unintentional humour at the end.

Urge. Liked the way the inside conversation was portrayed on the outside. Mr. Shrotriya, I am enjoying your films…

Vijay. Simple, and I liked it that way. I really appreciate the moving street shots you took.

  67. OM on December 4th, 2007 7:30 pm

@kabir..thoughafter watching dolly for 4th time, i loved it..the problem that i feel is that, i wudnt get it if you didnt have the synosis of the movie up there…i really looooove te way the sound kmixing i done…love the fact the way you shot the movie…loved the shot where a hand with bangles is picling the egg, but then again, if you had ot given the synopsis, it wud have been really hard for me to understand..having said that the ” dolllyy dooollly dooolyyyy” still haunts me..donno how to ract, so guessyour jobis done..much so coz i watched it 4 time…

    Dream Effect explained:-

Sometimes you have a friend in life who is very close but always enforces his point rather to say could be a very dominating character,he is a buddy but sometimes you feel he is your shadow who is always there with you and in that closeness and dominance you see a negative shade of him…………………………………….

The next morning when you wake up you end up saying “NO” to that friend who is so close to you because of the negative affect of your subconcious,

Try not to give ratings plz next time…………..
