i loved “accident” the best…simply wonderful saw similar one though in last year’s filminute.com
“auto m@#$c*&$” is second best
“still life” is great …third
“destination” “deja vu deja vu” were predictable
i didn’t understand much of “lets get physical” or did i think much, when it just meant getting physical??
Eyes have dirt…couldnt understand!!
Auto M!@@#$d is brilliant..Vasan take a bow..and now KK has another career!!
An Accident is mindblowing..man, how much one can do in 1 minute..and what technical prowess..Safat, kya kahein yaar..dil jeet liya!
Muerta is also very thought provoking..needed to see that twice to get a feel of the subject..
Destination is good! Very good end.
Lets get Physical has a nice end too!
Auto Madarchod hands down…lot of work put in..colour correction et all…..nice shots too…i love splits…..
in the opening scne of AutoMaa did u guys notice the letter ‘r’ is replaced by a pistol? what detailing… mazaa aa gaya AB-KK… take a bow! wow!
Awesome movies on the first day itself. Liked Auto *&^*&*&*&, deja vu. Couldn’t get “Let’s get physical”.
ravptor, indraneel- thanks guys!
@trippy- the film is about anything but getting physical. I tried working with a lot of themes that have always sort of obsessed and also disturbed me. Don’t know whether i’ve succeeded!
Loved it vikas… really nice! Congrats again.
@ravptor-thanks a ton man!!
though i wish i could do something about the quality. Don’t know why but when i play the same .flv file that’s stored in my comp., it has a much better quality
@vick- see it once more putting yourself in the shoes of that guy.
Thanks oz for correcting the name!
Thanks Tanul, for appreciating our effort!
virtual vs. reality, auto and destination for me..
vikas, tried it.. still didn’t get it.. mind putting up your perspective in a day or two after everyone’s had the chance to watch it?
great job folks..
@ trippy & indraneel..thanks alot..for apperaciate ‘ an accident’
@striker- sure man! Was thinking whether i should do it now. But you are right..should wait till everyone has watched it.
@ om … mail mila kya..?
1st day & already so much of excitement.Way to go!!!!
Naturaleza Muerta though a good film has already appeared on Filminute.com festival (To be checked whether it qualifies PFCOne rules)… AutoM@#$d ofcourse has Vasan written allover it with KK the executor… An accident by Safat is a good experiment with story telling technique… Destination is a good thought… Rest so so… That makes Day One for me.
Watched Auto M&^^% again..Saala, so much happens in such a limited time span..doesn’t look like a 1 minute movie at all…!
@ suraj nair..positive pole is very good movie..ye compitive section me nahi he..mujhe dhukh he…
I guess the compliments for each and every films will keep flowing, but my compliments are directed towards a certain individual called OZ and his entire team behind the PFCOne Festival. I think they deserve a standing ovation for running the festival second time in a row, despite all odds, and providing an excellent platform for budding/passionate film-makers.
A big salute to OZ and the entire team. You guys deserve it! Best wishes always!
for me the wtf movie was ’still life’ (didnt get it at all).
‘auto madar*&^%’ could’ve done with a little less obsceneties (it looked forced), but a good movie nonetheless. hats off vasan for the extreme closeup shot of kk which turns into an OS shot showing the rickshaw driver. loved that shot.
‘deja vu’ was good fun.
‘destination’ said a lot without a single dialogue.
vikas, i would like to hear your interpretation of ‘lets get physical’, it wasn’t clear to me. please do post it later.
from the non-competitive section, i liked ‘positive poles’ and ‘hum kya karein’.
the rest were good efforts. i am in the same boat as the others. i stand in the line of fire tomorrow. best of luck to the guys in the competitive section.
and once again, Thanks OZ.
and one more thing, why is ‘Surrender’ by Samresh Kumar Shrivastava not available? are there any issues?
ok, of the films seen till now
WANDERING SOULS
loved the shot of the cows eyes, but hated the narrators voice..
The Trip
well, loved the “cat” bit but nothing much
Smoke Without Fire-
liked it, simple concept executed well
Hum Kya Karein kinda reminded me of Aamir, isiliye cudn’t appreciate it that much, but, still it was nice..!
Virtual vs reality
Liked it, nice concept and execution
Here’s what i thought of each film ..hope i dont offend anyone …. these r completly my views … i could be wrong ..
@wandering souls – liked the effort u have put in … the streets of delhi were nostalgic
i didnt like the direct “oh human” formal addressing ..wish the conversation of the cow having with itself had been little casual/informal …. tongue in cheek may be
@smoke without fire – wish u had cut down the credit sequence and made it shorter… otherwise like the idea and execution
@mistaken identity – didnt understand ..does it mean the muslim character becomes a christian to seek forgiveness or to fool himself into seeking forgiveness … i guess the latter might have worked for me ….
@kids day out … nice background music … kids were great ..shot in picteruesque banaras ghats ..wish it had narrated a nice story
@virtual vs reality – lovely twist in end ..liked the idea … could have been made better ..nice concept
@eyes have dirt – didnt understand it at first ..only after reading the premise understood it …wish there were more instances of superstetion eg Friday 13th ….
@positive poles – well made ..liked it … Paresh could have been better
@minute bhar ki talash – didnt understand :(
@hum kya karein – would have been better had the dialogue not been there …. may be a subtle way that the old man refuses to give the tenant the house … would have liked that
@tigerphotonics – didnt understand anything ..liked it still …. saw it again … slightly abstract …. liked it ..surreal… camera/eit achcha hai but didnt get it again … :(
@dry state – loved the line “jalti hui sabarmati sey cigg jalayi” …felt u didnt use it to ur potential …. poora samjha nahi :(
@auto madar*#@d – loved ur film director saab ..but im biased
@lets get physical – well made …. hmmmmmmmmmm….. liked the idea of it ….
@naturaleza muerta – nice shots … still life (the title) went well with the shots of the meat
@accident – personal fav… brilliant visuals …. am jealous of u …. wish it had been little less abstract.. would have loved it even more
@dejavu – hahahahahhahahahahahahahahhah ..liked it … brougt a nice smile on my face …thoda better shoot ho sakta tha
@destination – the expression on old mans face said it all ..loved the film and the old man ….how did u do the transition btw from drawing to moving image ?
@surrender – could have been better ..the red lighting was little distracting
@Om thanks for the chummi
and yes ..even the out of competition films were rather good
@indraneel – hahahahah inshallah
@thanks magik
@vasan kidhar hai tu …dekh sab tareef kar rahein hai behen*$#@
@srinivas- yes a BIG bow to OZ and one to all the filmakers … waiting for day 2
@amit – the film is available ..try the youtube link and navigating to the list
The eyes have DIRT
loved this…aah was waiting for black and white
POSITIVE POLES-
love it, again beautiful black and white. nice cinematography
POSITIVE POLES-
love it, again beautiful black and white. nice cinematography
Minute Bhar ki Talash
again liked it a lot, nice concept though the sound could have been better
HUM KYA KAREIN
good, didnt like the yong guy. is the odl guy an actor? felt like i saw him before somewhere
OMG, AutoMaa already has a orkut kommunity! Beat that! Unbelievable!
WAH!!!
Jabardast all the Enthu filmakers!!!
@Virtual v/s Reality – Sahi Concept
@An Accident – nicely shot, but didnt get it.
@Auto Madarshot – is fantastic Entertaining,
I enjoyed watching it, love the diolagues,

VO killer – me
VO supariwaala – vasan bala
TIGROPHOTONICS
i thin this is the best i’ve seen so far, though there are plenty more to come
LETS GET PHYSICAL
didnt get it boss
@kk – yaar, i tried it 4 times before aur hamesha likhta tha ki video is not available.
abhi achanak chalu ho gaya. thanks.
Wah Vasan, Auto madar@## was a delightful watch. Very well edited and KK as an actor is a revelation.
An Accident was interesting…will wait for Safat’s storyline.
Still watching the non competitive section…
@kartik krishnan & Vasan Bala
sahi ‘Jodi’ hai tumhari !!!
just saw ’surrender’. visually beautiful. especially liked the terrace bit. but on the whole i didnt get what the movie was trying to say. looking forward to the directors interpretation. hope you help me in understanding it samresh.
By popular demand, the storyline for Safat’s “An Accident” ;)
The first section of the film (till the sunset shot) – After having inadvertently killed an old man in a road accident, the young man is haunted by thoughts and visions of the accident.
The next section shows the same old man following the young man, wanting his revenge. The film ends with the young man also meeting with an accident. Now, is it all a dream or is it really happening – you’ll have to figure that one out for yourselves
(This film, by the way, is an extremely shortened version of a 23-minute film by Safat)
Some of the films in the open section are also promising… the talent shows guys… keep it up!!!
THE ACCIDENT is awesome, hats off to you SAFAT.
this is definitely today’s best
Auto mad* and accident are the films that stood out for me ….overall the quality of films is lot better than the first installment ….even some of the films from non competitve section are interesting …..
@Rahul Soni
(an accident)
I thought old man died on railway track.
the man who is following young man looks difrent than old man.
Bhailog…alfaz nahi….beep……am quite Masakalli Masakalli…
Kabir -The man lighting his cigarette from the flames of a communal riot. ONly you can come up with something like that. Tu star hai!!!!
Safat – waiting for your feature. Wong Kar Ali.
so many great movies …
loved ‘auto maderc#@d’ and ‘accident’ … ‘virtual v/s reality’ was hilarious… but ‘lets get physical’ was my personal favourite … kudos Vikas
i just wanted to share something about my movie, ‘Deja Vu, Deja Vu’ … 15th october was the deadline for PFCOne 2008. i had wanted to buy a video camera for long, but kept postpoining because there was really no pressing need. but then on 15th at 5 pm, i again came across the PFC deadline notice on my calendar, and i said, fuck it, i’m gonna send a submission no matter what.
so i bought the camera on the 15th evening. wrote the script outside the croma showroom while deliberating on which camera to buy, and came back home and shot and edited the movie to send it just by midnight.
this was one of the first times i ever shot anything, and it shows. the video quality and the way it is shot (lighting etc) is just terrible, i feel, and was completely surprised when it made the cut to the competitive section.
anyhow, i applaud the PFCOne concept and cant wait to see the movies from the next days …
cheers
tarvinder
PS – thanks kk
PS 2 – timepass mein, i had made a bloopers reel of this one minute movie, and uploaded it as a video response

Deja Vu,Deja Vu…well i likd it even though the video quality et all want that great..but theres something good abt the movie..:)..good work tarvinder
Wow. These are perhaps one of the best short films I have ever seen. Auto madar$%$$, virtuality vs reality, mistaken identity, dry state, deja vu, still life, an accident.
My personal favorite for today is ‘Tigrophotonics’. Extremely enticing images and a very good selection of background score. Truly surreal, yet with a meaning. Bravo!!
safat – tu bas jagah bol banda haazir ho jayega … fukat ka actor
An accident..Safat bhai..apne acchi film banayee hai..mere khyal se mujhe pehli baar main nahee samajh main aata agar maine storyline nahee padhee hoti..aapka presentation kaafi umdaa hai..all the best.
Lets Get Physical..I did not get the movie.Looked interesting though..is it abstract?
Naturaleza Meurta..looks nice..i guess it got to do with wild life..
Destination: A film with good intention.

Auto MotherF**er was a brilliant idea with a very good actor. Congrats Karthik.
Vasan had mentioned somewher KK is going to act, and I thought it was going to be Kay Kay
But hey, not a bad bargain at all.

Keep up the good work.
ps: Aur “ji” bolke meri g**nd mat maar yaar
@Vasan, bro, can u enlighten us, where u got the idea for the title? I think it was a masterstroke. One felt like watching it just hearing the name.
Great job OZ in organizing this..so great to see so much talent coming in together on apna PFC !!
My favs for Day One:
An Accident.
Auto Madar#*@d: KK ROCKS !!!!
Deja Vu, Deja Vu.
Destination: My pick of the movie for the day.
Positive Poles.
Smoke Without Fire.
Tigrophotonics.
Virtual v/s Reality.
@ Safat: Great job again this year, enjoyed your film, the cs of the old man’s face is haunting.
@ Vasan: Yours too was a pleasure to watch, great use of the heavy guitar in the climactic reveal, lots of ideas packed into a very short time effectively.
@ Asif: You have some very nice imagery in your film.
@ Samresh: Ditto, lasting images.
@ Oz: Thanks for putting all this together, again.
@ Auto Madarchod: Great film Vasan! Apart from the eye close-up like everything about the film… KK trust me, you are very very good!
woohooo….pfcone is back n how!! cheers!! frm first day…liked virtual vs reality, naturaleza muerta, an accident n auto madar$%^&!! all the best guys!! looking forward to day 2.
Just wanted to add my thoughts. A few films definitely stand out – Auto and Destination.
Auto has so much repeat value, great acting by KK. Found that umbrella shot hilarious! Great finish as well.
Let’s Get Physical – I didn’t understand. Will wait and watch again before I comment.
Still Life was ok.
Accident – I didn’t understand. Read through the comments and gave it a second watch. Will wait before I comment.
Deja Vu, Deja Vu was funny, though could’ve been worked on. Tarvinder you did mention that you made it in a matter of hours. It’s a good effort for the amount of time you had, wish you had more time. Agli baar sahi.
Destination was great acting without any words.
Of the non-competitive section, Hum Kya Karen and Virtual Vs. Reality were note-worthy.
Looking forward to Day 2! :D
Thank you all for the kind words and comments on “Virtual Vs. Reality”. Hope to make it to compition next time.
Here is what Safat had to say about Accident… Sorry couldnt translate..busy at work…
”
film me jo young man he usse galti se ek old man ka accident ho jata he..jis ki vajah se vo pareshan he..vo accident usko bar bar khayal ata he..( ye hai film ka first half..cigarette vale shot tak..)
is ke baad vo old man uska picha kar raha hai usko marne ke liye revenge ke liye…aisa vo sapno me dekhta he…ya such me aisa he ye mene clear nahi kiya he ….! film ke end me uska bhi accident ho jata he…ye sirf accident ke sound se mene kaha he….
– film ko nightmare ke point of view se bhi dekh sakte he….aur old man vakai revenge le raha he is point se bhi dekh sakte he.
”
Hope this makes it more clear…again..brilliant movie Safat!!
Ah! The second coming of One!!
Some wonderful films of which Auto and Accident stood out. But the one that really stood for the spirit of PFCOne was Deja Vu – amateur but clever and funny
@ safat…..
boss hats off….
ekdum killer film hai……
this one’s way better than ur last year’s film……..fantastic stuff yaar……
The sardar in Deja Vu is damn funny :-)
Yes ,I like watching ‘Deja Vu’,. Idea sahi !!!
Deja Vu, Bloopers video by Tarvinder…
@Deja Vu
I had Deja Vu,
watching it once again,
again and again,
Now this is real fun
wait,
Now phone will ring
Much as I hate theorizing and ‘explaining’, I guess I got to do this. A lot of friends said they didn’t understand the film and would want to hear my take on it. I resisted myself but when the number of “didn’t get it’’s increased, I thought I better do some explaining or its gonna be very lethal!:)
Well, ‘Lets get physical’ is an extremely personal film for me. It emerged out of my personal experiences, many of them quite disturbing, as I have mentioned earlier. Below is my attempt to decode some of them. Please bear with me and I apologise if it gets too long.
There are a couple of themes which I have always sort of been obsessed with. The idea of imagination/reality and unrequited love being two of them. Let me narrate to you a couple of incidents.
When I was in first year of my college(2004-05), there was this really happening girl in our class. A piece of envy to other girls and the object of desire for all boys. Many in the college were after her. But she quietly chose a hunk from our class. It remained top-secret till one day a gutsy senior who had got a whiff of the whole affair made her accept it in front of everyone. Well, everyone though a bit jealous, was happy for them. The girl was not a typical high-flying type and they both made a good pair. And they could have lived happily ever after till one day we got to know the guy tried committing suicide but was saved. All of us were shocked and slowly it came out. Something even our wild imaginations could not think of- the guy belonged to the Scheduled Caste. He had hidden this so far but the girl got to know somehow. Many of us tried to talk some sense into her head but she was adamant. Her point was not as much about him lying to her but “ how can he be an SC and still hope to court me??”
There is this another very close friend of mine. He never had a girlfriend till very recently when a girl proposed to him. He too liked her a lot and he accepted. After all they had been unofficially seeing each other for over two months! The girl was extremely sensible, intelligent and articulate and so was the boy. They would have discussions on everything under the sun for hours without any of them getting bored or wanting to leave. So their dating each other was obviously the next step.
Third day of their official courtship, my friend calls me crying inconsolably. The girl had ditched her. On the third day their official courtship! He told me they had gone to a coffee shop and the girl tells him she can no longer be with him. The reason(take a wild guess)…–my friend is dark and she’s quite fair-complexioned. “ Yaar I have realized I won’t be confident taking you to meet my parents or introducing you to my friends. They’ll all make fun of me!” and “ oh man, u arre sooo nice..how I wish u were just a shade fairer!!”. And my friend was like ” Was I wearing white paint all this while that she couldn’t see i’m dark??”
I could go on and on about such experiences but time and space doesn’t permit. Maybe the experiences I’ve had are rare and extreme cases. But then I’ve had too many such rare and extreme experiences. I’ve narrated only two of them here as I hope they would help make me drive home my point better.
The film was my attempt at exorcising my demons. It was very hard emotionally to make it in the form of a film but then i decided i had to.
In the film, notice the guy’s attire. He decidedly belongs to a certain class(the lower class). And the girl is someone who is on the other side. Even though i made the film a couple of years back, if I have to use a modern reference, I’ll take the help of OLLO and say the girl is actually sheeshe paar ki jugni.
Much as the boy longs for her and desires her, wants to console her on her break-up with her boyfriend, tries to be her savior when he sees her getting eve-teased, ‘crosses-over’ to reach out for her help; he can never find her when he gets to the ‘other side’!. He doesn’t find her there because he doesn’t exist for her. So if he’s non-existent for her, how can he see her?!
Or maybe the whole thing never happened in the first place. Maybe it was all a part of the fairy tale the guy invented for himself. A damsel-in-distress devastated by grief and waiting to be saved from the clutches of a mawaali by her hero! Isn’t that a perfect plot and situation for the guy to show his heroism, his courageous n caring side; To show how much love he carries in his heart ? But no…he’s denied that fucking opportunity coz the girl has bloody evaporated by the time he reaches there!!
I really don’t know which of the two versions actually happens. Or maybe there’s a third version. That you’ll have to tell me. I can just tell you that my friend cried buckets after he first watched the film.
So some of the questions that arise are- where does imagination end and reality begin? How much of reality is actually reality and how much imagination is actually imagination? When we claim to have found love, how much of it is actually ‘love’? I know this one sounds hackneyed but think about it for a moment. What really does it take to be loved back?? and is it love sans all ’skins’?
Think about all of the above when you watch the film and I’m sure u’ll get it. U’ll definitely and totally get it. and if u still don’t, then maybe the film is really shitty! Thanks for ur patience in reading all of this and sorry if this sounds TOO serious! Can’t help it really!
@oz
loved the ‘deja vu’ bloopers
lets have a special bloopers section for all those who can provide them. i am sure all of us will be having loads of them.
Vikas..i got you wanted to put across..but dont you think..the movie is too abstract and required your explanation.Its completely my personal opinion.
vikas, the background to your film definitely helped a lot more in understanding your film.. thanks for that and hats off to you!
@Vikas Kumar
your film is nicely shot,
well done dude!!!
@sorav- point taken.But i would like to disagree with you. I feel the film’s complex but not abstract.
Maybe i could have simplified it a bit but then what does one do when the idea itself is so complex?
I agree it took explaining on my part but then aren’t films(especially short films, since one can totally afford it) supposed to be about our personal selves?
I myself am against abstraction and experimentation for the heck of it but what when the subject demands it?
Don’t know if i’m making sense here!
@ striker, shekhar- thanks a lot guys!
My pics of the day are:
1. Auto Madarchod- Hatzzoff! Just see the shot at 0:22.
2. Tigrophotonics- A 2 second last shot with some shakes might have made it more effective imho, but still one of the best of the day.
3. An Accident- Safat, your explanation insured that my interpretation was right, umm almost. A clearer face shot of the dead old man in the initial part of the movie would have removed the ambiguity.
4. Positive Poles- Effectively put.
Others:
*Virtual v/s Reality- Again, effectively put. Must have been difficult to make.
*Kid’s day out- Background score and location were brilliant.
*Still Life- Picturesque. Period.
*Deja Vu, Deja Vu- Got the idea. Moved on.
*Lets get physical- Vikas, whatever your attempt was, sorry it was lost in translation.
*Dry State- Nice idea. Didn’t work out.
*Surrender- Samresh, did you have permission to use that soundtrack? just curious.
@tarvinder thanks man! Wow, i guess we share a lot in common. I too had picked up the camera for the first time for this film n had less than 12 hours to complete it..i remember my friend giving me basic camera handling lessons and i was like, “pahle ye bata record kaun sa button dabane se hota hai?? ”
n by the way i really liked the concept of ur film. And believe me, i’m not saying this as quid pro quo. I mean it!
hey vikas
‘lets get physical’ was my fav movie of the day, man… loved it…
this is how i had interpreted it – the first part, the argument between the guy and the girl, who were presumably dating, was seen as a life inaccessible to the poor youth across the street. that life came with its fickleness and the couple parts ways over the argument. and the only way that he could ever be with a girl like that was if he could win her acceptance by some heroic, self sacrificing act like putting himself in harm’s way to save her (from the eve teaser)… but that was just a day dream, something that he just would keep wishing he would get to do.
… and i also loved the way it was shot … and the change in music when the eve teaser approaches … great stuff
…….
…..
PS – thanks subrat. your comment made my day.
…. the voice disrupting the scene in the ‘deja vu’ bloopers is that of our cook, on the phone, who also did part of the camerawork of the film
shit… this is like a mutual admiration society we are building yaar… i wrote that comment before reading urs
Vikas..thanks for the explanation..now get the right picture..god how much could you do in one minute..i am jealous…its always so much fun to kow where the idea originated from…like it.
Thanks for the explanation and background Vivek Kumar. I can watch your film with new eyes now.
@ Om
thanks man!
@tarvinder
am so glad the film got u thinking and u came up with ur interpretation.
wow, u have some real talent hidden in ur house. I mean ur cook cum cameraman did a decent job! Can i hire him? (hope he cooks as well as he handles the camera!)
And i don’t think we are building a mutual admiration society. Though i know there always is the danger of getting labeled thus when you like each others’ work!
@ pratik
yaar mujhe toh apna naam ‘Vikas’ pata tha!
@Vikas, now that I read your interpretation, I think dressing the guy (who picks the coin) in a torn vest (banian), old wrinkled torn khakis and probably a “gamcha” on his shoulder or around the neck could have made it more transparent as to the guy’s economic/social background and the chasm that exists between him and the girl, guys at the other end of the road. (yes its a little over the top, but what exists in your mind gets relayed quickly and effectively within that minute, by doing that)
Though I was not involved in the selection for Competition section, I was given the option to select one movie that I liked which the panel had not already selected for the section…. without saying much, you owe me a beer
@oz
agar aisa karta main toh mithun ki film ho jaati!

yaar kyun le rahe ho meri! I know u are at ur sarcastic best as usual!
And man, again this is MY interpretation of the film. Also the class thing is not the central point. It’s just incidental. He’s not meant to be the bechaara garib aadmi longing for the raees ameer ladki.
for the beer, anytime man. But i’m here in Delhi.
Thanks that u liked the film n included it in the competition!
Had to go through each of them twice before I came up with a personal verdict.
My favorites:
1. Destination – brilliant! Packs in so much story in just 1 minute.
2. Auto Madarchod – Intelligent and witty. Darkest humor I’ve witnessed in a long time. Fantastic piece of acting!
3. Lets Get Physical – the despair on the guy’s face – brilliant. Fantastic concept for a 1 minute video.
3. Dry State – addictive and effective. Also, amazing titles.
The rest were all decent.
Deja Vu had an interesting concept, kinda reminded me of the movie “Ru Ba Ru”. (Yes, I have seen it.) But had the hammiest acting job ever. :D
An Accident – trying too hard IMHO.
Virtual Vs Reality – good concept.
All those who commented on Destination above – thank you very much for watching and for your encouraging words!
A big thanks also to the organizers of PFC for this great opportunity! I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the movies on Day 1…great job every one!
@Kartik Krishnan – Thank you for your comment! Also, to answer your question, the image to video transition was really quite simple. I used windows movie maker for editing… there I took an image snapshot of the first frame…added a “pencil sketch” effect using photoshop… and used movie maker to insert that image back in to the video timeline and added in quick fade out-fade in..
Btw – r u the same KK from auto? If yes, you were brilliant!
Oz, Vikas… see comment #2 on top.
I understood it all… hehe…
Vikas… take a bow! again!
Vikas – was the idea behind your short inspired from the Coen brother’s episode in Paris Je T’aime?
to be really honest the start of the playlist was really dull…The starting 7 films were so uninteresting..
It was only from Positive poles that the show got interesting…
My top 5 picks from the collection
1) Deja vu deja vu
2) tigrophotonics
3) destination
4) positive poles
5) lets get physical and auto madarchod
@ravptor
thanks again man!! I just hope u too aren’t being satirical!
@Tejas
No man, it was not. But i’m honored if that occurred to you! I’d again like to say the guy’s character was created more of a misfit rather than poor. His picking up the 50 paise ‘misfit’ coin that’s no longer in circulation(shopkeepers, bus conducters refuse to take it anymore)has to do with HIS being a misfit and NOT his being so poor that he would jump at a 50 paise coin!
I had this aspect of his character very clear in my head. I had given my brief to the actor and told him to come unshaven and interestingly he wore some really simple clothes. And i was like-wow, let’s go with it coz it gives a new dimension and definitely adds to your ‘misfit-ness’.
Also, Coen brothers toh bahut badi cheez hain.
But if only for illustration i’m allowed to look at their film, the main character in paris je t’aime also is a ‘misfit’. Though for him it’s got to do with an alien language and culture!
My apologies if at any point of time my film seems deliberately complex, indulgent, pompous, or anything like that. Main bas assure hi kar sakta hun ki aisa intention kabhi nahi tha mera.
When i started thinking of making a short film, i was like- Why not talk about something that’s within me; about thoughts which have taken control of my mind? Can i make a more honest film than one that comes from within me?
Lots of images would occur to me-while walking down the street, while traveling in the bus. A lot of “What-if” type of images if u get what i’m trying to say..hard to put them in words here. I would also see something identical sometimes. Once i saw a beautiful girl waiting on the bus stop. I kept observing her until her bf came in a car, she got in and vanished..And i was like-man, she could as well have been invisible all this while!
Small details started filling in. Like many times i’ve seen couples fighting , though very subtly, on the roadside. They would be arguing inside their car parked in a corner. Many a times i’ve noticed a motorcycle parked beside a quiet road, the guy half-sitting on it, the girl trying to hide herself behind him from the glances of curious onlookers. The girl would be trying hard to control her tears. Both trying to look normal when they are actually having a fight.
There were lots of my own personal experiences and those that my friends had that went into it. I cannot discuss all of them here for obvious reasons.
Maybe all this is not a big deal. Maybe these things struck me only because i’m from a small town and the city , at least initially, was alien to me with all its complications and complexities (including the complexity of relationships). I can really not say for sure! But one thing i can assure you- all of my film actually happened around me(whether literally or metaphorically) and i SAW it.
@shilpa
u got game gurl…
way to go!
Vikas..stop apologising..you have created something wonderful..complex or not..its good..very good..what your explanation has done is..given us a new perspective to look at it..its like directors commentary…abhi maafi maangna band klaro..else, we will have to ban you from PFC ;)
waiting for day two movie..specially shekhar shimpi’s THE RAVEN…!
For me the three performances that stood out on day one was:
The guy I. Let’s get physical
Kk….auto madha…
the old man In the destination
Day two kicks in another half an hour….
finally watched the films. Great start to One2.
-
2 films for me are Auto$$#, and Accident.
Auto$# had the best concept and execution. I like how vasan divorced the audio from the video, and thus packed in a lot of information. I liked that the story actually had development, the protagonist does something out of desperation whcih may be is not in his character (or may be i’m projecting since we all know that kk is such a nice guy), and lastly he even packed in a twist in the end. well done. and kk had that frustrated look of helplessness, and rage that i see in his rants on cinema and girls. so he wasn’t really acting. waah, kya acting hai. waah, kya acting hai.
.
I don’t understand why people didn’t get accident. it seemed very straight forward. i liked some of the images. the dog in the desert, the guy going backwards on a dune…
.
special mention for Kabir’s dry state. What I don’t know. But i was captivated.
.
deja vu had one funny line, when the friend says it can’t be deja vu because that happens only in french or something like that.
So do you guys think the jury has done justice in selecting the best 6 for competitive so far? I know its a damn tough job..but still….
@ Om
thanks yaar, that gives some strength.
@suprabh, tanul
thanks guys!!
@vicksteria
thanks!
mushkil hai par namumkin bhi nahi om bhai! i think the judges have been very very just! salut!
@vikas,
interpretations aside…
the movie had ’soul’
especially the music .. who did it?
Yea..KK is a non-state actor..:P
Some of the lines in Deja Vu were funny..I found the sardarji quite funny and quirky.Nicely done.
Vikas I liked the opening sequence bro..the coin.That was not amateurish if you were handling the camera for the first time.
Title and the film – Was going for Sankalan. It was Sriram Raghavan who was to conduct a session with the scriptwriters. I wanted to gatecrash and listen to him. Anupama let me in. I got out at Andheri east and started looking out for an Auto. The next 40 mins I had asked every MADAR$##^^# AUTO in the stand and got into none. I was getting late and it was a Sriram Raghavan lecture I was missing and I was seething. I wanted to kill one and take the vehicle myself. I ran and ran and reached the highway and finally hijacked an auto by getting into it and refusing to get out. He took me to where I wanted. All thru the journey my blood was boiling. Wanted to pick up a fight….I wanted to kill…It brought back memories of SHIVA. After each show we saw (saw it some 4-5 times I guess) we wanted to get into a fight….I felt the same. Reached the location. Sriram Raghavan was standing outside with the students for a break….where I met Jyoti a writer. I was generally cribbing and cussing away like nobodies business…..and told her what if it was a killer who was getting late…..he would have definitely killed an MADAR%^$%^#$ AUTO fucker…..then told her a line from KILL BILL I love. when The Bride asks Bill why did he have to indulge in that bloodbath. Bill says…..”maybe he over reacted…” the bride is furious “over reacted?????” Bill – “whatelse do you expect a killer to do…..”. (Pratim would know the exact lines…..correct me if I am wrong….don’t want to mess with you on Kill Bill trivia ïŠ)
I had 2 options in mind 1.) K.K and 2.) Somen Mishra.
If it’s K.K then it would definitely be a killer getting late.
If Somen then the common man turning vigilante.
But went with the whole…..what else does one expect a killer to do thought.
Shooting was tough. A couple of blasts and police in all important stations.. There was no way we could get into the crowd and shoot. Anubhuti got her car and let me hide in it. KK – My actor, producer, assistant….everything……right from waking me up in the morning to getting the tapes…to getting costumes…..I just bossed around….and asked KK to go here and there….and he would……sometimes he would get frustrated and turn back in the middle of the shot and say “bhen^%^$%^ kya shoot kya kar raha hai bata to sahi…” He never knew where the camera was or where I was……I would just say “jo bhi kar raha hai camera mein mat dekh….we can gain or lose a moment…..”. 65% of the tape has KK looking into the camera ïŠ The rest where he wasn’t…..YOU ARE are magic machchan ïŠ
KK did not know how to drive an Auto. He took an on the job training for exactly 5 minutes I guess…with me dangling to one end with a camera in another hand.
If at all I want to make a short film…I always keep away from a few things.
1. No slow motion of children/Old People walking/running (of hell!!! have done that once….guilty – http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_SMgXa-Pgo)
2. No showing…handicapped people…..NEVER EVER. No showing….someone doing something…then…..with sad violins in the background…it’s reveled that he/she was blind….or crippled. I Hate cashing in on that SYMPATHY factor…..I hate them to my gut. Can’t stand them and they are always sure shot crowd fav….
3. No waking up in the end…and oh! It was all a dream.
4. No suicide.
5. MOST IMPORTANT – no complaining if people did not like my film. This is the toughest rule….
@DPac
thanks man!
The music-I did. I had various free samples available but not how u hear it in the film. Me and my friend(who provided the technical support) worked on many tunes and finally created the music that you hear.
@Vasan, good… now you know how I feel with my bunch of lovable authors who at times I simply want to strangle… replace auto with PFC and you know…
@VikasKumar
Dude, I understand your sentiments and now I understand your movie. Earlier I only understood that it was not the case that the guy was harassing her.
One more thing I would like to suggest is that when you go for grayscale images you should take care of cloths. The observer and the guy with that girl looked quite similar. So I thought, for a moment, he is remembering his past days.
Also what was the significance of that coin?
@Safat
1- What was the significance of that rail-track
2- Was the movie played reverse scene by scene?
OZ – CHILL – u have once again…taken all that strain and heart beat skips…and put together this platform – take a bow…..- Masakalli Masakalli……Matakalli Matakalli..
Vasan waah waaah…same sentiments..same sentiments..that is no sentiments in my short….infact..would love to make a comedy on sentiments..a joke on a short of sentiments
@Vasan: thanks for the behind the scenes dope. just wondering wud it have been the same without the car… that hidden kamera stuff has lent so much to so may movies… dev.d inkluded! Cheers anyways, loved ur film. its on my orkut fav vids. owe u guys a beer!
Wandering Souls by Amit Tiwari – Wonderful! I love the subject matter, the narration, how it was shot, and everything about it…
The Trip – Sweet! Shows that even an ordinary home video of a trip can be turned into an interesting short. I only wish that the subtitles were in yellow so they are easier to read.
Smoke Without Fire – An interesting take on an old idea. Good job on innovating what could have been just another PSA.
Mistaken Identity – I like the idea of showing another side of terrorism; those who impersonate others in order to perpetuate hate.
Kid’s day out – Sweet. I would have liked to see the closing shot of him reacting to receiving his kite, though…
Virtual v/s Reality – A pretty standard PSA type short, except I really dig how you shot the crash scene. That was pretty cool considering the tools and time you had to work with. Totally cool.
The Eyes Have Dirt – I didn’t quite get it. I understand the trepidation and superstition, but didn’t get where it was going. That said, I dig the sound design. Really, really dig it…
Positive Poles – An awesome film, and an awesome way to tell this story. I really like the way the relationships were drawn.
Hum Kya Karen – Good job. I really liked the acting in this film…
Tigrophotonics – I like the surreal feel of the film, how it was shot, how everyday farm/village scenes were made to feel sinister. But, I didn’t really get it. Damn my lack of Hindi fluency…
Surrender – I loved the use of colour, and how it was shot and designed.
Auto Madar#*@d – What more can be said?
Lets Get Physical – I like the idea. I can think of so many different interpretations of this, which I like. It was also very well done.
Naturaleza Muerta –OMG I love this!!! A simple farm scene, really well shot, really peaceful, really well captured. I like that it is an English pun, as well. “Naturaleza Muerta” in Spanish is Still Life, but translates into English as “Dead Nature”. This film captures both…
Deja Vu, Deja Vu – Awesome comedy. There are so many good quotes from this one little short…
Destination – I am speechless. What a powerful, well made film. And, without even using a word.
So, my favourites? Destination. Naturaleza Muerta. D'©j' Vu, D'©j' Vu. Wandering Souls. The Trip.
Now, on to Day 2…
It’s the AK school. Go to the toughest of locations…get the busiest of crowds…and as one can never set conventional camera angles….one always either gets a bad one or an interesting one….never a dull moment.
Vasan..was it all dubbing or sync-sound?
@sourav
thanks bro!
@xion
thanks for ur suggestion.Makes sense! Will keep in mind next time. For the coin thing, look at comment 121
@Vasan
Like ur film even more now!
Wow!! Interesting anecdote man! Now I personally feel the rage that the contract killer did inspite of me not being a contract killer!
Vasan and KK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Effing FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always suspected that the two of you would make SUPERB actors, and Auto MC proves me 100% right!!!!
I’ve laughed a lot in this cafe that I’m watching this in! So’s my 12 year old cousin sis.
HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love you guys!
My picks, in that order.
Auto Madar… – Typical Vasan!! Sly, slick and sexy… with KK in Irrfan mode. Vrrooom.
*WB bows to the dudes*
Accident – Janab, kya visuals hai! Ek dum sexy!
good premise, smart take! kudos Ali saab.
Deja Vu – Hilarious! But gives one the feeling that the making has had a few limitations to face. Good show nonetheless!
The spark is shining right through. Guess it was the circumstances. Congrats Paaji.
@wb..thanks bhai..!!!!
@xion..rail track is only a good location..no other meaning..and u see comment no. 57 for story line..
Auto Ma%&^
Rocks. adha kaam to title mein hi ho gaya, by KK by god.
Minute bhar ki talaash
Cool concept, liked the film, good use of dimensions and aesthetics. Ends of a sweet note. Liked the film.
Surrender
Nicely cut, good use of filters. I thought it could be a less subtle in the last 20 seconds, the music was a tad distracting.
Naturaleza Muerta
Definitely raises the technical standards.
Mistaken Identity
Brilliant opening shot, good pacing, good cutting, why no hindi/urdu lines?
@ wb, t!, sourav, dabba, suprabh, shekhar … thanks guys
Vasan n KK,
in one of the shots kk ducks the umbrella …how did u get it done ?? .. i mean where the girls part of the shoot..or was it a random shot …
The Trip
I thought it was a scoring trip, but it ended up being just a trip. Hmmm
Smoke without fire
Why the anger with smokers?
Positive Poles
Very nicely done, good use of sound, and the punch comes real nicely at the end. Liked the way it is established. Super cutting, good expressions. All positives.
Auto Ma%*&%*
Dubaara dekhi. The fun multiplies. The Killer – Kartik Krishnan. Wow, aur jeene ko kya chahiye..
so many finer things, KK’s apontaneous expressions, the smooth delivery. Poora picture banaao yaar.
Naturaleza Muerta
Saw again, subtle quiet take on the irony of life, one guy lives by killing animals. Reminded me of Three Burials.
Destination
Sweet little film, loved the way the camera rounds the old man and establishment is made quite smoothly.
Deja Vu Deja Vu
Awesome man, hats off, you got it just right. I already feel like I have said it before.
Let’s get physical
Liked the way the guy looks from across the street. Was there anything else to notice?
thanks a lot guys …
anand – that shot was completly impromptu ..I’m like that in REAL life ..try to ignore people when im caught up in my thoughts…with myself.. thinking… in public etc etc
girl didnt know i was standing there … that there was shooting going on … i just did that without knowing what im doing …
Tigrophotonics
Fuck what was that! You get my vote dude for making the best stoner short till now. There some good stuff there.
Destination is an exceptionally well-crafted film and speaks volumes of the directorial skills of the writer/director/producer as well as the histrionic ability of the actor.The subject is heartrending and has been emoted superbly. Congrats to the director for being able to elicit so much of the requisite pathos in just one minute!
Dry State
Loved that one shot with the guy asking for a matchbox from the passenger. It summed it up all.
Right said, Supriya. Pathos is the word I was looking for.
Anand(151) was going to ask the same question….loved that shot.
great film vasan and KK is perfect for the role with his killer looks :P
I think ‘virtual vs reality’ deserves to be in competitive section. Loved it!
Destination was nice.
Loved the idea of Deja Vu, Deja Vu….acting could have been much better.
Auto madar..has excellent outdoor shooting and camera work…congrtas to the director..and camera man.
Liked the message behind Smoke without fire…grt idea..and well presented .
KK, thanks for the explaination …that was such an awesome shot and so real ….more power to you guys …
@niranjan – virtual vs reality ka twist bahut achcha tha dost …. its a film that has repeat value … reiterating my point – loved it …
@tarvinder and OZ – loved the bloopers video … u guys sure had fun
“a phone will ring !!!”
“its morpheus !!!” high pitch mein hahahahahah
im not supposed to pick up the phone
what why not ????
hahahahahh ROFL !!!
BTW – liked ur interpretation of lets get physical
@vikas – the incident u have narrated indeed forms the backbone of ur film …
BTW – watch a brendan fraser film called school ties if possible … somewhat related to that story of the SC guy and the girl in love …
“Was I wearing white paint all this while that she couldn’t see i’m dark??”
OMG ..the most ridicolous reason i have ever read for a girl dumping a guy …
Having read this … i get your intention and the attempt to communicate all this in your film …
The only problem is the communication ..and trust me its a hurdle to effectively convey “why cant others see what i can see”..IT is a BIG challenge ….for that we need to be objective and constantly re-checking ourselves…I’m guilty of it …. it happened with my first short film ..
http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=o2lX0J0qgyE
Hopefully am not sounding patronizing …
Am sure in your future endevaours, the idea will be better conveyed so that people will not say “it is abstract” ..all the best ….
Hats off dude … for taking the crticism in your stride …
And it doesnt look at all that u had picked up the camera for the first time ..
“I’d again like to say the guy’s character was created more of a misfit rather than poor. His picking up the 50 paise ‘misfit’ coin that’s no longer in circulation(shopkeepers, bus conducters refuse to take it anymore)has to do with HIS being a misfit and NOT his being so poor that he would jump at a 50 paise coin!”
Shit …more interpretation …. Sahi !!! thats why i was wondering why the shot of 50 p coin
and yes the guy playing the lead was nice …
P.S – your film took me back to the bus stops in delhi …where i stayed … we would stare at the HOT girls … the moongphali waalas ..the goons and awaraa lafanges ..the inferiority complexes i had while approaching the girls …the film is very rrelatable …
@Amit ..lets have bloopers for all the films ..lets ask the filomakers …. AWESOME suggestion ..OZ ji ..possible hai ?
@satyavrat – read comment 151 :P
@shilpa – sahi sahi ..got it ..the transition
@dabba – “so he wasn’t really acting.” hahahahahah i am tempted to say you right ..but why take away the charm of “kya acting kee hai” …. :P
@vasan machcha – love u ..and thanks soooo much for sharing the germ of auto ..and more so for sharing the things u wanna keep away from. The 5th rule is the toughest
Btw “65% of the tape has KK looking into the camera” ..thats why im scared if all the people raving about my performance had seen the unedited version/wrong cut..they would have HATED me ..thank u DOP-Director-Editor all rolled into one sirjeee .aapne laaj rakh li meri
@WB – kk in irrfan mode !!!
U JUST MADE MY DAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY DARU TONIGHT !!!
@neeraja- errr thank u
Vasan anna kallakeeta !!!
@KK,
are bhai, may I have your permanent address i.e. postal address of your parents so that they also see which kind of path breaking, bhasha breaking, traffic breaking cinema their son is doing.
Auto driver/s were taken in confidence before you mouth handled them? were They real or actors?
One who countered your anger performed well. His name is included as an actor?
BTW, IMHO, you should have used Manjeet’s baritone on other side of Phone to bring more killing touch to the conversation effect in the film. VO on Phone is quite soft in comparison to your high voltage performance and the hard task under consideration.
RK saab – kyun ghar waalon se pitwaane ki baat karte ho..bhasha breaking..path breaking .. sey bone breaking ho jayega ..
all the auto drivers except the last one did not know anything about shooting ..they were not taken into confidence …i just went up and asked them andheri west location which they all flatly refused ..because we were at east and no rickshaw usually goes from east to west …
the last auto rickshaw driver was someone we chose randomly and had to take into confidence (not only had he to perform, but also teach me auto driving) …we didnt take his name etc ..but we paid him 100 bucks which he was refusing to take but we persisted …
Manjeet would have sounded tooooooooooo lazed out and sust… his voice lacks energy …IMO ..
My comments on all films of Day 1
Wandering Souls
Powerful images. Amateurish voiceover. The film would work just fine without the VO because the images are so telling. Trust the power of your visuals.
The Trip
No comments
Smoke without Fire
Idea of a PSA is good but can try harder to make it more impactful, and really show the effect on family as passive smokers.
Mistaken Identity
Interesting. Caught my attention. Good use of sound in the opening. Subtitles were not necessary. Good film.
Kids Day Out
Not sure I understood this one.
Virtual vs. Reality
Good concept for PSA. Impactful. Could have been cut a little more energetically. Also the close up shot of the man’s face during the accident could have been avoided. Good effort.
The Eyes Have Dirt
Did not understand this one.
Positive Poles
Interesting. Wanted to see something more.
Minute Bhar Ki Talaash
Could not understand it.
Hum Kya Karen
An honest portrayal of a real problem perhaps faced by many youngsters today. Kudos. In something shot straight up like this, try not to jump the 180 degree line during editing over the shoulder shots. Other than that, good film.
Tigrophotonics
Didn’t get it.
Dry State
Superb. The power of imagery!
Auto Madarchod
Funny. KK was awesome. I wanted more story, but I won’t overanalyze this one. Fun.
Lets Get Physical
Not sure I got it.
Naturaleza Muerta
Not sure what the filmmaker was trying to say.
An Accident
The visuals were great. Really drew my attention. But kind of left me a little hollow on the story front.
De Ja Vu
Interesting. Good effort. More natural actors would have enhanced it. Also, more coverage would have helped. By that, I mean more shots that covered the expressions of the actors. Master, over the shoulders etc.
Destination
Simple, powerful, moving! Pure story, pure performance. Loved it! The audiences is pushed to imagine such a detailed backstory by simply being shown a photograph, a face, and a location.
Surrender
Great imagery. But I was fishing for a story. Why was this guy contemplating suicide?
My favorite film of Day One – DESTINATION
Vasan and KK – very nicely done! The pacing was excellent – felt his rush and his exasperation.
Destination was also very good – such a simple idea and very simply communicated – and so, very effective. Nice.
Congratulations everyone.
Thanks for the feedback for ” wandering souls”..will try to improve next time…
Amit Tiwari
Wandering Souls had heart.
The Trip was pointless & a waste of time for me.
Smoke without Fire – I wish they had not done the heavy Dramatic music. But its a nice effort. Also like KK said Its weird to see a long credits roll in a 1 minute film.
I didn’t think too much of Mistaken Identity. Didn’t get it.
Kids Day Out was again similar to THE TRIP. Pointless.
Virtual vs Reality is a nice concept.
The Eyes have Dirt – ???????????
Positive Poles – Nice effort.
Minute Bhar ki Talash. – The phographer of those pictures is speaking? Great pictures. Would like to know about the photographer. But why shoot a bunch of someone else’s photographs? That doesn’t make a film.
Hum Kya Karen – Hum kya kahen!!!
Tigrophotonics – Interesting
Surrender Couldn’t watch.
Auto Matherchod – My fav film of the day.
Still Life – Great Images
Accident – Great movie.
Deja Vu Deja Vu – Hilarious. Paaji rocks
For a 1 min 15 sec film…we shot for an hour….so there were many moments…and there were no other actors consiously a part of the film other than KK and the Auto guy who gets killed…all were passing…and probably had no clue of them being filmed.
If interested I can upload a few shots…..which were edited….basically the ones where KK was looking into the camera….
Auto MC…kya baat hai vasan bahu…umbrella shot is the shot of the year,deserves oscar nomination
@Vasan
Add whole Article, Making of “Auto Madar”,.
real entertaining Cinema, (sequel bana do yar)
@CC
yes that Ubmrella shot was crazy,Loved it;
Oscar nahi Bhaskar award dena chahiye.
RK Saab -the first person to watch the film was my mother. And even as we were dubbing at home my father was getting all worked up…..but for cinema….they had to let go of their nishtavan, agyakari….susheel beta.
My mother and father think KK is a superb actor. Mom loves him.
For the “THANDA” boss dubbing….am sorry yaar…it was me….could not match KK’s enthu. And for Manjeet. PLease call him and have a 5 min conversation..and let me know what you think then.
Vasan..when i saw yur movie for the first time…i told oz that this could be made into a triology…the first part you have already made..
Next one minute film would be from the perspective of the caller..what he is going thru when KK is trying to find an auto..and then gets a call from Bhau..
Next one min fil would from Bhau’s perspective..how the caller is convincing bhau that the killer is “almost” there..and then..the twist..bhau decides not to kill malhotra…
Kya boltha?
great idea Om!
@Om
wow! lovely idea.
@vasan
please make it into a trilogy.
I must say, once again, a big ‘Thank You!’ to all those who watched Destination and commented on it above! Your encouragement goes a long way and it has totally gotten me all inspired to make more shorts in the future!
I wanted to also thank a few people without whom Destination would not have been possible.
I want to thank my friend, Sudha, who sent me the link to PFCOne 2008 and asked me to check it out. I have been doing a bit of theatre previously and film making was always just a far-off dream. So when she sent me the link and asked me to start on it, I made my very experimental first film Destination.
I also would like to thank Mr. K Radhakrishna Menon, for playing out the character in Destination. Mr. Menon is a veteran theatre artist in Singapore and I can’t thank him enough for participating in my experiment without even thinking twice!
Ravish – thank you for the photo!
@Kartik
Thanks a ton bro!
Yeah I’ve seen ‘School Ties’. I guess what’s most disturbing is – all these ridiculously incredible things still happen!!
No you DON’T at all sound patronizing bro! There was some real valuable advice there! About the idea getting conveyed- In fact I was very much aware about the danger of the film ending up not fully accessible. But making the film very easy to understand was the last thing on my mind. The style of the film was a very conscious decision. I was told about the possibility of it coming off as abstract but then I was like- behen*&%# , when the things I’m trying to talk about are so insane and don’t make any sense why should I simplify the film and make it ‘saner’?! Why don’t I let the content decide the form? ( that behen*&@% was Auto Madar’s effect rubbing off on me!
)
Also the response of the film was very varied. Among all the people I showed the film to, many got it completely in the first watch and loved it, many after a second watch, and there were also those who didn’t get the film n couldn’t relate to it.
But yeah I do understand ur point and I’m very much aware of the importance of reaching out to everyone. Hopefully will be able to do it with my next. Thanks a lot again for all the suggestions.
Glad that the film could spark nostalgia in you about ur delhi days. Aur yaar kaun si ye antim film hai life ki…abhi toh puri life filmein banani hain aur ye toh pehli hi hai!!
doesn’t matter even if it’s totally panned! But do keep the suggestions flowing!
Cheers!!
P.S. – BTW I really liked ur first short film. I don’t know why u say u were guilty?!
Shilpa K Shukla, Destination is wonderful! I liked it dil se. Sock in the gut! An ideal short film! And it works mainly because of Mr Menon’s great acting and the tilt up climax shot!
@Vasan
I remember I was there when you were telling me the your story for Auto MC. And no, I wouldn’t call your voice laidback or anything. You were pitch perfect and tone perfect
Nuts. Make that “when you were telling us your story”
My picks for day 1
Destination – nice and simple..
Auto Madarchod – too good…
accident – good visuals..
@Vasan
just read your behind the scenes write up, Inspiring
how did you convince that Auto Driver to act in your film?
What was his reaction?
That would be interesting.
Wow!
I feel jealous of all the people who could make a movie.
I have seen only 8 out of 19 including all 6 in C section.
My views:
1. Auto MC: Very kinetic. Nice story. A bit more profane for me.
2. Lets get Physical: Love the way it was shot. I did understand the part about unrequited love but Vikas’s explanation helped in getting more perspective.
3. Naturaleza Muerta : Beautifully shot. The old man was he a real butcher or an actor. He was really into his role. But somewhere it lacked a punch or may be it was suppose to be like that.
4. Deja Vu 2: I think it was OK. The end was neat. It was more acting oriented so close-ups of actors would have helped more.
5. Destination: This is the most complete movie, IMO. Fantastic expression by the common man. It keeps you engaged and the story reveals itself very nicely. The parting shot stayed a second longer. I liked that.
6. Accident: I think this was mind blowing. My only grudge was the sound of accident in the end. It wasn’t a great audio. I assumed that the biker died too in accident. I saw it only once so the problem may be from my side.
.
Shekhar, we were done with all the shots and were looking to get lucky with the last Auto with the driver for the day. We had to shoot in a lane where there were no cops and no one objects on KK driving the auto without license and a lane where there are not many onlooker as KK would be riding it and I would be dangling on the auto with a camera…so did not want many people peeping in…had enough of that at the station.
KK is a fab actor….now how to get an auto driver perform?????
We got lucky…really really lucky with the first auto we approached. We told his it was a student film…students me and KK..hahahhahhahhaa…maybe the auto driver loved Clerk…..so he though we pass off as collage students.
He started…the general looking into the camera…and of course he could not act…..here KK was awesome…..he started pushing the Auto guy in the take,….maybe that worked and I got that one shot with the auto driver’s face…and he looked convincing uttering those lines…..I thought I’ll keep it….then the O/S of the driver proved great as he was not saying anything….I just cut some audio of the good take and repeated when his back was showing…so it looked like he was consistent with his lines. KK did the rest….
Initially I had also taken a close of the driver with blood coming out of his nose…and a close of KK’s hands with blood on his knuckles….later took them off….
The whole shoot from location 1 was wrapped in under 2 hours…..it was totally impromptu…..in 2 hours of shooting we shot for an hour……just kept the camera rolling knowing fully well 59 minutes of it are not going to make it…..but I always knew the film was going to take shape and make any sense only in the edit….watching the random footage was going to make no sense….so we kept on shooting and KK kept running from one Auto to another.
Except for the last auto which KK drove…none of the auto driver’s knew they were being filmed.
Vasan, you guys are great!!!
Somebody should have shot this thing from other camera; While you were hanging on the auto and shooting, KK driving and dead Auto driver behind,
towards the end where you took close up of KK would be circus.
He He Clerk reference is funny..
Vasan & Team,
You are an inspiration.
Was a lot of color correction done? It seems to uniform. I can never get to shots even of the same place to look the same if I even move an inch.
Of course, I have no background in film making and I use a $200 camera.
-n
Deepbluelotus – Ours was KK’s small handycam. Not even a PD-150. And when you have a great location….nothing matters….you put the camera anywhere and you have an interesting frame…..so it’s “if i can do it anyone can”….I don’t see how any background matters.
I can’t claim I have no background…but I was one of the worst ADs on the set and I generally don’t know from my finger to toe. Clueless and forever lost. I bet anyone can better my act on a film set. So I don’t think you need much skill too. Maybe a bit of an itch in the ass…that works….I guess.
Color correction – I used a Sony-Vegas version 7 on my home PC to edit. Thats more trial and error. I know no jackshit about colors or saturation or contrast..nothing..Trial and Error and Luck.
Go for it…Get Lucky…
Auto madarchod, accident and destination .liked them
