PFCOne 2010 : Third Annual One Minute Online Film Festival

Update Nov 13: 2 more days to go before the window closes on accepting submissions for free. From Nov 16 onwards until Nov 30 we’ll be accepting submissions only with the late fee.

The list of submissions confirmed for the festival are listed here.

Update: Saurabh Shukla has announced a special award for the winner of his choice from the competitive section. The Gappu Award will be given to the filmmaker of Saurabh’s choice. The winner of the Gappu Award will get an internship on Saurabh’s next project for the entire duration of production. End Update.

And… it’s year three. Announcing the Call for Entries, for PFCOne 2010, the third online one minute film festival.

Oh boy! It’s the third one already. It just feels like yesterday when a group of five dived into conceptualizing the idea of an online film festival, the very first of it’s kind anywhere online, in the summer of 2007 at PFC’s HQ in Orange County, California. Time flies.

We received over 150 entries in the first year. And each one of them was shown at the festival. Year two, things got, ahem… heavy, with over 200 hundred entries, we decided to introduce the Competitive section.

Year three follows the same path, but we are spicing it a notch up.

PFCOne 2010, will be held from January 5, 2010 to January 9, 2010

So what is the festival about and how can you participate?

Everyone of you can participate in the festival. Each one of you. All movies that follow the festival rules and guidelines will be shown at the event. The mission of PFCOne is to encourage the filmmaker in each one of you. PFCOne is our attempt to motivate you to get up and shoot the movie that you’ve been dreaming about for so long and, if you win, our aim is to reduce your journey drastically between your cubicle and working with established filmmakers on their movie sets.

So all you have to do is to come up with a story that can be told in one minute, and to shoot the movie using your cell/mobile phone, your digital camera, your camcorder, rent a movie camera, a video camera… anything that can capture a motion picture to shoot a one minute film that is based on an original story…

Other tools that will be needed, are mentioned below, that can be downloaded for free mostly. Animation is also welcomed at the festival!

The Festival Timetable

September 15 : Submissions for PFCOne 2010 are now being accepted.

November 15 : Last date to submit your entries for free.

November 30 : Last date to submit your movie with a late fee of $15.00

December 15 : Competitive and Non Competitive Section is announced on PFC

January 5 : Festival Begins

January 9 : Winners announced.

Movies for the Competitive section will be chosen by an internal panel of PFC Authors.

A special jury will then select the top three winners from the Competitive Section.

Tools and Tips for making your movie

(list compiled by PFC Authors)

This festival aims at giving wings to your thoughts. Nothing should come between your idea and realizing it in the film. Having said that, we are aware that technology can get tiresome at times, and can distract you from your train of thoughts. So do read through these tips to help you realize your dream:

1. You should find out how compatible your recording source (phone, camera) is with the software that you have. You can easily find that in the product manual of the camera, or the help pages of the software.

2. Once you have figured the compatibility, find out what size and format does the file take once you transfer it to the computer. Now you might have a rough footage that you will feed in the edit software. Most of the editing software compress/transform the file once you upload it. You should do a rough calculation, after looking at the size of this raw footage to ascertain how big your final, one minute film would be.

3. You might also have a sound sample that you want to mix/overlap it on the film footage. Do find out how the final footage size varies with/without the sound mixed.

4. Once you have the final film ready, it is always advisable to keep a separate format ready for projection screenings. The film might look good on the website but might get pixilated once you screen it on a projector. The same holds good for the sound quality of the film. Make sure you keep the room for this in pre-production.

    Could you please clarify whether should i mention the link of my movie where it is uploaded along with the submission form.

    GD Star Rating

    • oz oz says:

      Kundan, your movie should only be uploaded on a file server, links of which we have mentioned in the post. It should not be on a public domain – ie. your movie should be first shown to the public only at PFCOne, ie. it should first premiere at PFCOne.

      The link of your uploaded file should be mentioned in the form where it says “My movie is uploaded at:” enter the complete URL here. Or you can upload the movie in your email as an attachment using a Yahoo account which allows large file attachments in email. If you movie is bigger than file sizes allowed by Google or Yahoo then something is wrong and you should try to get a better compression done on your movie.

      Hope this helps.

    Hi All,

    Please clarify if we can use some other songs as background score. I am kinda confused as I cant find any composer to lend his free hands for my movie.

    If not then what are the other options open for me?

    As per point no 10 “Any music has to be original or clearance has to be produced”. :cry:

    • oz oz says:

      Priya, this has been a constant question in the past PFCOnes. Try emailing composers who’s song you would like to include. Give them details on why you want to use it and that it is for the festival. If you do not intend to sell or use the movie for commercial gains, then do mention to them your movie is for non-commercial purpose only. In the past PFCOnes quite a few filmmakers got approval from various composers to use their songs in the movie. There are other ways to get free background score for your movie. Check the links in the post above for royalty free music.

      • Jay Jay says:

        Hi Priya,

        I would suggest the second option that OZ is suggesting. There are a lot of music files that are available under creative commons which you can use by attributing the composer. But do check not all creative commons licenses are meant to be used in videos (as addding of clips might be considered as modifying music in certain case). But most of the music files can be used, and you can put the movie under creative commons later when it gets premiered on PFC One :) .

        Also try this website www.music-for-video.com. It has some really good effects and short musical pieces.

        quoting from their site :

        You can download and use these sounds for free on your video/multimedia productions.
        The effects are free of charge for use in commercial and non commercial productions; if you use some of these on a website we ask for a link back to our website music-for-video.com .The sounds in this part of the website are mainly dedicated to people involved in video production , video montage ,multimedia projects etc.. but you can use them in any way . You can not post them on your site for download, sell them , claim copyright on them .
        The bottom line is : listen , if you like download and use , if you use them give credit to us , and we will be able to provide more useful sounds

        Hope this helps you. All the best :)

        Regards,
        Jay

    You mention that …
    “If the opening titles and/or end credits overlap with your main portion of the movie they will be counted in as the main movie – which means – the total length of your movie with opening and end credits will have to be 60 seconds.”

    My film ends with the last frame frozen with the end credits overlaid on it. Is the frozen frame considered to be a part of the main portion of the film?

    Thanks

    Is it against the rules to show it ‘privately’ to family & friends via facebook + other password protected websites?

    Is it ok as long as its not put in a publicly viewable website (like youtube)

    Hi, I would again like to repeat my question as mentioned above. My film ends with a frozen frame over which titles, credits and background score have been rendered. Since no new information is being conveyed after the frame is frozen, technically the movie should be considered to have ended there and the titles and the background score should not be considered as a portion of the main movie. However I needed confirmation from the organizers in this regard before submission of my film. Kindly provide an early clarification.

      @Subrat.Dwibedy,
      declare
      Opening title;
      Main Movie;
      End Credits

      For each movie {
      Opening Titles + Main Movie + End Credits < = 75 seconds;

      Main Movie <= 60seconds;}

      else{
      submission declined;}

    Hey i read in the comments section that director duo films are allowed. I just wanted to confirm whether putting two names in the Submission form with a single email address would be a proper way to submit the film. I mean a single form with double details would not be rejected. Please do clarify on this.

      Ashwini, if you find your film in the list then it has been accepted… if you don’t find the movie here, do contact us with the specifics, using the contact form.

    Oz,

    Can you please clarify whether there is any restriction on having some songs playing on the radio or TV? They just play on the background meekly. Would that be allowed? It would be great if you could let me know this. If not i will mute it and submit it tomorrow. Thanks!
