Tools and Tips for making your movie

(list compiled by Tushar and other PFC Authors for you)

This festival aims at giving wings to your thoughts. Nothing should come between your idea and realizing it in the film. Having said that, we are aware that technology can get tiresome at times, and can distract you from your train of thoughts. So do read through these tips to help you realize your dream:

1. You should find out how compatible your recording source (phone, camera) is with the software that you have. You can easily find that in the product manual of the camera, or the help pages of the software.

2. Once you have figured the compatibility, find out what size and format does the file take once you transfer it to the computer. Now you might have a rough footage that you will feed in the edit software. Most of the editing software compress/transform the file once you upload it. You should do a rough calculation, after looking at the size of this raw footage to ascertain how big your final, one minute film would be. Is it in compliance with the upload limits of your email program? PFC will be receiving all your entries via GMail, where the maximum file size allowed is 20 MB. Now just to be on the safer side, it ensure your movie file size is 18MB or under so it can be sent via email and PFC can receive it via it’s GMail account. (note: zip files are not accepted)

3. You might also have a sound sample that you want to mix/overlap it on the film footage. Do find out how the final footage size varies with/without the sound mixed.

4. Once you have the final film ready, it is always advisable to keep a separate format ready for projection screenings. The film might look good on the website but might get pixilated once you screen it on a projector. The same holds good for the sound quality of the film. Make sure you keep the room for this in pre-production.

  20. oz oz says:

Thirangaa, I see that Anurag has already replied to your query.

From PFC’s end it is always our honest intentions to bridge the gap between the filmmaker and filmviewer, to create more opportunities via such contests, networking and other means for creative and talented individuals. There are atleast a dozen around here who can tell you of the opportunities they have received via PFC to work in the creative medium.

PFC editors have spent much time in organizing the contest you talk about, in getting the links, pictures etc for each and every of those 400 plus comments…

PFC can only do so much… if decisions get delayed or producers need more time to get their projects off, why should PFC give up its optimistic marching forward attitude and not look for more avenues to create further opportunities for the cinema fanatic? We aren’t running any profitable venture here via such contests and we aren’t in it for the money… a lot of time and energy is spent into organizing these events and a lot of cash flows out from our own pockets to get these things rolling because we truly believe in such ideas and goals…

    Q.1
Does the 1 min movie have to confirm wid any censor norms?

    - Make anything you want but no porn please :)

    Q2.
Does the 1 minute include the credits?

    - No… your entire video is divided into
    (a) Opening title if any (will not be counted in the minute)
(b)Your main movie (will be timed for the minute)
(c)Your end credits (will not be counted in the minute)

    Q3.
If my boss agrees to fund the movie and display the company logo in the credits, does it have any effect on my eligibility to participate?

    - Sure, if the firm has helped you in making the movie, you are free to include their name, logo etc. but ONLY in the end credits and you have to mention what help did they provide you with. Please avoid putting more than two logos of the companies that helped you… if there were more companies you took help from please feel free to add them as text.

    Q4.
Can i seek professional help to edit the movie?

    - Of course you can. You can use any professional help, any post production tools (editing, sound, effects) for your movie.

Q3. NO..it wont affect the participation. Get your neighbourhood dog, cat or anyone to produce the film ….. it doesnt matter. All we care for is the film….

Read the whole post but don’t think you have mentioned on what parameters will the entries be judged on.

How much weightage will be given to technical finesse is my question, really.

    GD Star Rating

  31. oz oz says:

d&c, :) there are no parameters… no weightage… no nothing… the focus is to make a good film of one minute duration… the point of this festival is to bring talented people who may have nothing to do with films, out in the limelight.

  37. oz oz says:

    - Rony, yes. If a film is only being shown at festivals and has not been released anywhere in theater, web, television… it is eligible. But the focus of PFC will be to look at the amateur filmmaker – the one who has only been dreaming of making movies but so far hasn’t because of his/her regular day job, etc.

    - Shailesh, Mac comes with it’s own editing software while Windows too has some. Most at home these days use Final Cut Pro (FCP) which is one of the simplest editing tools available online but is expensive, try to see if you can get your hands on a trial package or a student’s copy. If you have a Mac, iDVD should be enough. A quick search online will get you what you are looking for.

Regarding music – search google for “royalty free music”… you will get some really good websites who offer such music downloads for pennies.

One final question that’s keeping me back
The mini dv has the ilink firewire feature, which means superior quality when downloading the movie.
The dvd and hard disk models don’t have the ilink feature (talking about sony)
All 3 have the usb transfer feature however … so any difference in the quality, when i download the movie using the USB port to my PC (via the above mentioned cams)? I have visited the link provided by Shripriya (thanks a ton for that) and that only speaks about difference in quality if downloaded via ilink. I would be editing my movies at home (to start off with), and so was worried about the quality when I downlaod via the USB port.

    Thanks for the link, Shripriya.

Anthony, as I understand, you are mixed between a mini DV cam with ilink and a hard drive/DVD cam with USB. I would suggest you take your pic between Quality and Transfer. do you want a better resolution cam or a one with faster transfer. I agree that ilink transfers faster, almost double the USB transfer rate, but I would not compromise on the quality a high def cam gives over mini DV.
The reason why? I would go with a better quality high definition cam, considering it doesn’t hurt if you have the resources to buy a mini-DV and planning to use it for professional purpose in the long run. Mini DV is for home videos.

some more links to help you narrow your selection:

striker & oz, thanks. Yup, I was concerned about the quality, not just for this film but anything I might do in the future, since cameras cost a lot and I didn’t want to make a mistake considering my modest budget.
Tushar, thanks for the links. Great help to me. I may have to go with a standard definition camera due to budget constraints.
Anyways, my main concern was quality. And since the emphasis is more on content, I can afford to take a breather!
The reason I kept asking was that here the emphasis may be on content. But there is a good chance I won’t win (I mean there are so many talented gals/guys out there :) ) and other contests may insist on video quality. Buy I guess the firewire and minidv combo shud help me considerably (given the money I can spend).

the best and easiest way is to dump ur original audio track (or maybe use it in bits whereever possible) and make and mix a new track with the sounds/dialogues/music etc which u want

    @anthony
characters inyour movie singing popular songs in their own voice (without original music track) shouldnt be a problem…

images at random (stock images) is best used if they are your own or if you have bought them or if they are royalty free. check policy on usage for whichever media you are going to use which are not ur own

Kumar, Yes if you don’t have the rights to the karoake you may not be able to do it. My advise is to call the record company and clarify the matter.

D&C, no… please no… you can upload you file on a “file storage” website or a file uploading site – these sites are purely meant to STORE YOUR FILES. They do not “show” your file on the browser be it your video, your music or anything else. All you uploaded file “CAN ONLY BE DOWNLOADED” and “ACCESSED ONLY AFTER DOWNLOAD”… You cannot distribute it until the festival is over. Putting your file on YouTube before the festival ends equates to “distribution”. hope this clears the confusion.

Sourav, If you have a mobile phone that captures video go for it… why try to burden yourself with issues. The objective of the festival is to make it “as easy as possible” for everyone to make a movie, so drop the camcorder idea since it looks like you are facing problems and opt for an easier cheaper option.

please visit the links below for answers with regard to your file format questions..
Use VLC media player or QuickTimeplayer to play .3gp files (your handset would have some with additional software to play these files in any case)

i was wondering if anyone could suggest a video editing software for 3gp and cell-phone footage.

also once i have completed editing my movie in 3gp format, how do i convert it to .flv file? and will that affect the resolution of the film?

sorry for coming up with so many doubts, but, i’m just not “techy” enough.
