PFCRonin : The Ten Contestants

There were 92 reviews that came in until the window closed. Another few dozen came in after we closed the window and unfortunately these had to be left out of round one. The last two hours before the close saw a flood on submissions.

It all came down to 15 top notch reviews and it got tough for PFC’s internal panel to get them down to 10. After much discussion and deliberation here is the list of the Final 10 who will be fighting it out for the title of PFCRonin.

Movies for which the ten contestants have to submit their reviews will be announced each Wednesday (by 10pm PST). The ten contestants will also be notified by email about the movies. The contestants are advised to check the last dates of submissions for each week here

The ten contestants listed alphabetically are:

  • Shaayon Bhattacharya (Mumbai, India)
  • Rajesh R Kallidumbil (Pune, India)
  • Praveen Gopal Krishnan (Bangalore, India)
  • Kavita K Meegama (Bethesda, USA)
  • Satish Naidu (Pune, India)
  • Sreehari Nair (Trivandrum, India)
  • Mohammed Rashid (London, UK)
  • Shantesh Sunil Row (Dubai, UAE)
  • Trasie Stittsworth (Los Angles, USA)
  • Thani (Mumbai, India)

ROUND TWO: The movie to be reviewed for round two will be announced in two days time on January 9th by 10pm PST.

Beginning round two, the reviews of all ten contestants will be published and judged by the esteemed non PFC Jury.

In case the contestants have any questions please feel free to use the contact form to email us.

Congratulations and we all hope to see scintillating reviews zipping out of your keyboards for the next five weeks. Good Luck!!!

i wish the deadline for submissions was extended by a few hours at least… since the competition is about recogonizing talent, there should not have been such rigidity with respect to the deadline timing. Especially since the date of close was jan 5th PST 10pm and we should assume that the day end is 12pm (midnight).
The two dozen entries that came in a little later (few hours) after the window was closed should have been considered as well!

    Hi Oz,
can u pl tell if my review made it to top 15? any other feedback would be appreciated as well.
    thnx.

BTW, for everyone else, here is what I had submitted:

Taare Zameen Par: A true motion picture

Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan’s first directorial effort, is made with a lot of conviction and sensitivity. It has a unique script with a social message, executed differently compared to contemporary Hindi cinema. The opening shot of a mesmerized Ishaan, the protagonist, collecting tiny aquatic creatures from the school gutter into his water bottle sprang a smile on my face. The scene was very nicely done, indicating right-away that Aamir understands the fine nuances of his craft. This sequence also established the free-spirited lifestyle of Ishaan. The next hour delves deeper into his day-dreaming mind, each scene solidifying that Ishaan just wants to be mentally free from the shackles of our systems.
The movie identifies with us, touching our emotional chords. We can relate to Ishaan sitting next to the driver in the bus, or staring out of the window during class, or being compared to his studious elder brother, or being rebuked for low marks by teachers and parents. In parallel, the film is extremely sensitive. I had tears in my eyes whenever Ishaan or his mother got sentimental: like the departing moment at boarding school, the following ‘Maa’ song, or when Ishaan runs into Aamir’s arms while receiving the best painting prize. Prasoon Joshi

  5. Evelyn Tu on January 6th, 2008 8:44 pm

Yeah, congrats to the top-notch writers who are listed here! ^:)^

Oz, I’d be curious to know how many reviews were submitted. Since PFC is getting so much recognition, was it in the hundreds or even thousands?

  6. oz on January 6th, 2008 9:05 pm

    - Shiv, the deadline date and time of Jan 5th and 10pm were mentioned in the original post for submissions. Considering we had to declare the winners after the collecting the judge’s decisions, build the post, notify the winners, set a lot of backend process into motion, we could not take any late entrants for it would have delayed the entire contest schedule. :)

    - Evelyn, the total submission received were around a 136. Some were rejected cause of incomplete submission forms, length and others cause they simply arrived quite late.

  7. adr on January 6th, 2008 9:12 pm

    Oz,

It would be great if you could post the winning entries on the site.
    What say?

  8. Sudhir Nair on January 6th, 2008 9:29 pm

Congrats to the top ten…i think (and i hope) we would get to see their reviews. Maybe there should be no provision for commenting otherwise we might have a never ending debate. Ill have to sharpen my skills for Season 2 (if and when that happens)..

  9. Inca on January 6th, 2008 10:25 pm

Congrats to each one of you.

    More power to you all.

    I second that, Ronny.

Let’s see where we all were.

  17. Gopal Awasthi on January 7th, 2008 2:06 am

    Phew….tough luck….
hey why not post the winning entries so we could compare them to ours(and feel a lil less disappointed)…since a more personalized feedback isn’t possible!!

  18. Just a Thought on January 7th, 2008 7:30 am

First of all, congrats & best of luck to all those who won.

Just a thought…would it be possible to do a contest like this for those who are not already associated with the entertainment industry and journalism line? I thought this contest was a platform for those to get noticed for their review-writing skills who would not get noticed so easily elsewise. It gets a bit unfair (matter of personal opinion) to have people who do review writing on the side as a hobby competeing with others who are already established in the field of communications. For example, the shortlisted contestant Kavita already works for CNN and a few other TV channels, as well as has already produced films and documentaries. I’m sure a few of the other contestants have similar experience.

Not trying to complain or be a spoiled sport. But, it would be great if PFC did more contests like these for the underdogs :) Thanks!

And…good luck to all those who were short-listed. And, keep working on your writing to all those who did not make it–There are plenty of other esteemed places you can get your reviews published if you work on it ;)

  19. arun prakash on January 7th, 2008 7:46 am

Oz, do you intend to post these ten reviews?
Please do so,before we have a flood of rejected reviews in either the comments column or via posts:d

    Rony,
I liked ur review….its good, talks about different aspects of the film and is also written nicely w/ an appropriate ending.

see very simple lines for a lovely movie
Tareen zameen par is an ossom movie. Aamir has again played his Mr. Perfectionist role but as a director. Story, acting, direction or cinematography all perfect. But there is scope for improvement as background music didn

  23. rick on January 7th, 2008 8:34 am

YEAH CAN THE NAME OF THE 15 CONTESTANTS BE KNOWN?
would be nice to see where we all stand as someone else already said

  24. Jaykumar Shah on January 7th, 2008 9:49 am

As Much As I had liked the idea of the contest I am loving these comments. I too had sent my entry for Ronin. You can see my review of the movie on http://www.jkpcblogs.blogspot.com also and here is a copy of text.

Title of your Movie Review: Taare Zameen Par : Every Director Is Special

Movie Review: (650 word limit. Please enter below your movie review
for Round One - ‘Taare Zameen Par’)

Aamir Khan came up with a brilliant movie, well yes and no both. Yes
because AK has been good in terms of direction, acting and producing
the film but No because I don’t think that the Idea, the beautiful
characters and the heart of the movie is his own. The person I would
like to credit whole heartedly for this movie is Amole Gupte. He knew
“every child is special ” and still he gave his baby to a friend who
could show it the light of the day.

The movie is about young dyslexic Ishaan Awasthi, who comes over his
shortcomings, making himself as special as any other child, making all
of them who scoffed scolded and despised him, Love him. And in the
journey he discovers a mentor who believes in him, Ram Shankar
Nikumbh. A beautiful subject about understanding children and their
imagination which everyone who has done anything ever against his will
    will identify with.

There are many heartwarming scenes in the movie but the one that made
to my list and that you should watch out for are: The sequence where
Ishaan bunks the school to see the colors of life splashing all across
the streets of Mumbai as he walks down (”bindaas” with a wink).
Another one was when he says his bully lighting a cracker in his hand
that “I am not afraid”, it brings out the emotional turmoil in his
heart so beautifully making us think of how we have stereotyped good,
bad, life and achievement. But the most beautiful part of the movie is
the song “Maa..”, it simply makes you cry, especially when the flip
book made by Ishaan is shown for the first time, as he disappears from
the painting and his mother’s tear falls on that place.

The biggest thing that I did not like was that the story needed a
painting competition to make Ishaan accepted in the class. It shows a
race which eventually Ishaan wins and that is exactly what the makers
    did not want to portray.

Acting by the director’s actor Darsheel Safary is outstanding. He
brings out emotions in the exact requirements. Remarkable. Aamir Khan
as usual has acted well especially in the scenes where any other actor
would have sound totally preachy. Tisca Chopra as mother of the young
boy has given a moving performance, especially in the scenes where she
thinks of her son. Vipin Sharma as father hams in parts. Other Kids at
the school are good and the teachers at school have performed strictly
    ok.

As a first time director Aamir has done a fabulous job, especially in
the handling of emotional scenes which is practically 75% of the
movie. His finesse as director, once improved will make him a director
    to watch for in future.

Amol Gupte the writer, the creative director, the ex-director, the
visionary has done a very good job in all the factions of work he was
involved in for TZP. Most importantly he lends his character, his soul
    to Ram Shankar Nikumbh.

Deepa Bhatia has done good work with research and concept but editing
part was nothing more than average as unnecessary scenes were not
trimmed and it looked jittery and jumpy at times.

Special mention needs to be given to the special effects (especially
the Calvin rip off of captain Ishaan) which thankfully were not
    overdone and were very apt.

But the biggest winner of the movie was the music by Shankar Ehsaan
Loy. They knew exactly the point when the audience will have a lump in
their throat and joy in their eyes that are lost in colours of the
movie. Add to it the magic of Prasoon Joshi’s words. Finest of the
    year for sure.

Watch it with your family. You will like it for sure. I would give it
    a 3.75 out of 5.

Here’s a link to the movie review from one of the finalist at PFC Ronin. Satish Naidu. This may or may not be the one that was submitted, but here it is…

Satish though I don’t completely agree with few of your negative points in the review, the review was nothing short of outstanding. You definately deserved to be on the Top 10 list. Great job.

  26. Sarang on January 7th, 2008 12:47 pm

Can we know who the last 15 were? Also, since this competition has 6 rounds, and you had 15 pretty good reviews why NOT give the other 5 another chance? Wouldn’t that be fair?
Anyway, good luck to the contestants. Have fun!!!

  27. Rajesh Shetty on January 7th, 2008 12:56 pm

I completely agree with Sarang. May be the PFC Ronin is the talent which got left out in the 5 reviews that almost made it to top 10.

  28. Satish Naidu on January 7th, 2008 9:06 pm

    Hey Rajesh,
Thanks a ton for the appreciation.
My review at the link you mentioned, sure isn’t the one submitted because of the word limit. The one submitted primarily had the top two paragraphs.

    Regards,
    Satish Naidu

liked your long version on the movie-place blog, Congrats!

  33. P(L)AYBACK on January 9th, 2008 8:10 am

Oz,…its sad, but I think PFC is dying,…there is hardly any traffic,…even fewer comments,…and the best posts get a maximum of 5000-6000 views (rare). Compare this to the 30000-40000 views per post when PFC started ! :(

  34. Shekhar Shimpi on January 9th, 2008 9:05 am

    @ Play
    Just Wait,
I think it is like Silence before the great Storm:)

  35. suchita b on January 9th, 2008 9:17 am

Payback, i agree with you, why don’t you write a controversial article and get the traffic back…it has to be big time controversial something out of the world….i can suggest you a few things…:d

  36. spin on January 9th, 2008 9:53 am

    Congratulations to the winners.
and all the best for next round.

  40. kavita on January 10th, 2008 5:38 pm
  41. suchita b on January 10th, 2008 9:12 pm

Play back, to begin with, expose everybody who are writing with a different name:) and i can’t help you on that because I don’t want to go to hell..:d how about starting with your real name..:)

  42. P(L)AYBACK on January 10th, 2008 11:14 pm

    @ Suchita…Yeah right ! :P

  43. Neeraja on January 11th, 2008 9:04 am

    @Suchita
    I second that :)
Come to think of it, on PFC it’s mostly men who hide behind virtual names, wonder why? :-?
    :D

  44. Anand Kadam on January 11th, 2008 9:27 am

    @Neeraja …
how can you confirm that they are men …:)

  45. Neeraja on January 11th, 2008 1:35 pm

    @Anand Kadam
Here is a list of possible reasons:
    1) I have good intuition about these things
    2) Because of some of the comments they made
    3) I would like to think that :D
    4) Every theory needs some basic assumption
    5) Who cares if they are (or aren’t), I just want to know the real names

    Pick your favourite :)
(Note: only one option is correct)

    hehe enough nonsense!

  46. cinemaisdead? on January 11th, 2008 1:59 pm

Playback, if you’re really concerned about the lack of traffic, one might suggest you shouldn’t tell them to “not talk about things they know nothing about” or “stop writing trivial pointless articles”
insinuating that they don’t deserve to be here, because some of them might believe you.
    Just a thought :p

  47. P(L)AYBACK on January 12th, 2008 7:19 am

@ cinemaisdead ? …would u write an article about Quantum Physics next time ?

  51. suchita b on January 13th, 2008 1:43 am

Neeraja and Payback, they are mostly men, because they are the ones who have lots of secrets [god knows what they are:((] and they are the ones who seem to be more inclined on blogging then women,, but there are a few woman as well, albeit with the name changed… and Play back are you one of them :d:d

  52. P(L)AYBACK on January 13th, 2008 1:57 am

    @ Suchita,…What do you think ? :)

  53. turrtle on January 15th, 2008 7:27 am

    @Oz

If the readers are not satisfied with the ten reviews on offer, can they vote somebody out ?

Alternatively, can you publish the 5 who did not make it and have readers vote in a wild card entry ?

    What say, eh ?

  54. P(L)AYBACK on January 15th, 2008 7:35 am

    @ Turtle,…who do you wanna vote out ? :)

  55. realname on January 16th, 2008 9:25 am

‘Suchita B’…what’s the big deal about blogging with your ‘real name’? It sounds like you haven’t been to any other online chats….everyone writes under pseudonyms on the internet. This sort of issue(the ‘real name’obsession) only matters to people who have no life beyond the internet….
