…phir bhi VIVAH ne silver jublee manayee

teen dinon mein ‘hit’ aur agle hafte cinemagharon se ‘gayab’ ho rahi filmon ke is daur mein VIVAH ki silver jublee khas mayne rakhti hai.darshkon ko yaad hoga ki is film ki release ke baad mumbai ke filmi panditon aur trade visheshgyon ne bhavishyawani ki thi ki ise darshak nahi milenge.sach to yeh hai ki single screen aur chote shahron ke darshkon ke liye upyukt is film ko film sameekshkon ne filmi bhasha mein ‘dho’ dala tha, lekin VIVAH ne yeh sabit kiya ki mumbai mein baithe pandit aur visheshgya desh ke darshkon ke rujhan ko nahi jante.mumbai mein jabardast kism ki lobbying chalti hai,jo kisi bhi film ki release ke baad use hit ya flop karne mein lag jati hai.
HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN se saflta ke shhrsh par pahunche suraj barjatya ne MAIN PREM KI DEEWANI HOON jaisi prachlit formula film mein apni lokpriyata ki dhalan dekhi.hrithik roshan, abhishek bachchan aur kareena kaoor jaise popular stars ke bawjood MAIN PREM KI DEEWANI HOON darshkon ko pasand nahi aayi thi.suraj ko ehsas ho gaya tha ki awashya hi unse koi ghalti ho gayi hai.ghalti yeh hui thi woh apni zameen chod kar kuch naya karne ki koshish kar rahe the.VIVAH se woh phir se apni zameen par laute.unhone ‘desi’ soch ke saath chhhote shahar ki ladki ko apni heroine ke roop mein chuna aur use modern tarike se pesh kiya.yahan tak ki maqbool fida hussain ko is film ki nayika ne unhe apne kaishorya aur yuva kal ki ladkiyon ki yaad dila dio.unhone madhuri dixit ke baad amrita rao ko kendra mein rakh kar paintings bhi ki.VIVAH darasal seemit prints ke saath release ki gayi yhi, lekin baad mein darshkon ki maaang par iske prints badahye gaye.yeh film darshkon ke maukhik prachar se safal hui.film dekhkar nekale darshkon ne apne parichiton, mitron aur rishtedaron ko film dekhne ke liye bheja.kisi bhi popular film ki yahi khasiyat hoti hai ki daarshak hi uske pracharak ban jaate hain.uske liye aakramak prachar ya millions ke ads dene ki zaroorat nahi padti.VIVAH ki lokpriyata se bhartiya darshkon ki ruchi ka bhi andaja lagaya ja sakta hai.
gaur karen to is film mein koi bada star nahi tha.shahid kapoor aur amrita rao ki jodi safal rahi hai, lekin is jodi se kisi badi hit ki umeed nahi ki ja rahi thi.VIVAH ki safalta mein in stars se adhik director aur unki poori soch ka yogdan hai.unki prastuti dashkon ko bha gayi.hindi belt mein VIVAH ne jyade business kiya, leki mumbai ke filmi pandit aur trde expert ise nahi maan rahe hain.iski seedhee wajah hai ise UP aur BIHAR mein adhik se adhik darshkon ne dekha zaroor, lekin ticket rates kam hone se cash register mein ullekhniya rakam nahi deikhi.choonki filmon ki safalta ka sambadh kamai se jod diya gaya hai, isliye darshkon ki sankhya ko trade expert jyada mahtva nahi dete.phir bhi yeh sach hai ki VIVAH ne silver jublee manayee, jabki us dauran release hui kuch badi films do hafton ke baad hi cinenagharon se utar gayi thi.

ajay, i could only read less than half of your article because reading hindi in an english font is just way too cumbersome and tiring for me, as i’m sure it is for others as well. also, PFC is a global platform for cine-lovers everywhere around the world, so please either write your posts in english, or provide a translation for your posts, just to be fair to those who cannot read/write/understand hindi. shukriya (thanks)…

super, i have nothing against ajay writing in hindi. he’s more than welcome to do so. but if you’ve been on PFC long enough, you know this site gets plenty of non-desi readers as well who love world cinema and do love watching indian cinema as well. and there are also desi readers here who may watch hindi cinema, but with subtitles bc they don’t understand the language. my comment was simply a suggestion for ajay to be fair to all readers, and also increase his own readership. for you to say that people who don’t read/write/understand hindi should stop reading such reviews… why should they? they’re on “passionforcinema”, not “passionforhindicinema”.

    Welcome Mr Ajay on PFC.
Its nice to be reminded that Vivah has actually celebrated Silver Jubilee which is very uncommon these days. Suraj Barjatya had released Hum Apke hain kaun also in same fashion. He released it with single print in Bombay and later increased the number of prints and released elsewhere in the country.
But still there is no formula. Audience rejected his marketing policy in Main Prem ki Diwani Hun. Word of mouth marketting was there also. But film has to have something which can connect it with the audience. HAHK and Vivah did it, MPKDH did not do it.

If you dont mind, Hindi fonts are available, which you can use to write your article. You will be agree that Abhivyakti or other Hindi language based net magazines wont accept your roman scripted articles no matter they are written on Hindi cinema. Nobody will object if you publish your article in Devnagri Script. Its really hard to read whole article in roman script. When we have facility to type in Hindi fonts then this special emphasis on Roman script looks bit odd.

One more thing: Number of visitor on the top of article certainly does not tell that these numbers of people actually read the article. Many might have left it after finding it difficult to read in Roman.

Many may start writing articles in SMS language with lots of mathematical digits used as alternatives to english alphabets. Does that make good and easy read for readers?

I am sure your first purpose will be to reach maximum number of readers and not propagating roman script.

Sorry if anything suggest you to mind it. but intention is to tell what a reader of your article may feel after finding so much difficulty in reading it.

    Thanking you.

Sunaa hai ki “Vivah” ne “Fanaa” se bhi acha business kiya hai. “Fanaa” sirf publicity aur bade stars ke karan hit hua hai. Lekin “Vivaah” achi film hone ke kaaran hit hua.

Hindi film audience are divided into two. Classes and masses. It is the masses that make a hit really. When film like “Chuppa Rustum”, “Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet” where considered as flops, they made money in the Northern circuit of India. Even when Salman Khan’s “Bandhan” was released the filmi pundits had said that this film is a sure flop. But it turned to be a hit.

Masses are never taken seriously and the films that become hits because of them are never taken seriously. Many forget the superhits of the 80’s Hukumat, Insaniyat Ke Dushman, Waqt Ki Awaaz, Swarg Se Sundar, Elaan-E-Jung, etc. The films that I mentioned were superhits. Lekin nobody wants to speak of them. Because they do not belong to the classes.

Or It may hapen that what could not happen after 1857 by britishers, it becomes possible now and Roman becomes alternative script for DevNagri atleast on Internet and hopefully in real life also in coming years.:)

Personally I can’t read Hindi fonts so the Hindi-Roman script works for me. Agar baat hindi film ki ho rahi hai to zahir hai wohi log padhenge jo hindi samajh sakte hai…

Abhi font-wont par badi baatein ho chuki hai, us film padh bhi kuch baatein ho jaayein jiske baare mein Ajay-bhai ne likha hai.

See, I don’t necessarily disagree that the Indian audience is divided amongst classes and masses. But we must realize that a general statement as such is over-simplyfying things.

I’m not from middle-India nor can I be considered a small-towner (main ek NRI hoon). And yet I liked Vivah. It was a sweet, simple film which aimed to appeal to the “good” in us.

In fact that’s why it scored. Because no matter how jaded and cynical we may have become it our lives, somewhere inside of us we keep the desire to be “good people”. To be nice. To have values. It’s just that we have gotten so accustomed to put up a wall, or a shield, to protect ourselves because we’ve all been trained to believe “nice guys finish last” and “the world doesn’t work that way”, “Duniya kamzor ko jeene nahin deti” and all that.

Vivah may have been “old school”, but it was surprsingly refreshing (and not regressive as some have said).

If you haven’t seen it, I say rent it. But watch it with your guard down and an open mind. I think you just might like it too.

However, I have visted this page numerous times (as the script changed etc.,so my visits count in the “reader” views number)

There are others on PFC who won’t understand this either. If you are fine excluding people entirely, that’s fine. I just feel that you were willing to make the shift from devanagri to roman to accomodate some people – why not accomodate everyone? ;)

This isn’t pressure or a “must-do” – just my thoughts. At the end of the day, you should write how you feel comfortable. Hopefully one day my Hindi will be good enough…

And considering Vivaah is an Hindi film and most of us are Indians here, we should take pride in our national language. I agree with what you said about Vivaah. Its an achievement for a small budget and simple film to do well and hold its own in today’s marketing and proposal driven Bollywood. harneet singh: please dont make it a language debate. Its not language debate. people were discussing the script.
    Suraj Barjatya and simplicity?
Have you really been seeing hindi films with proper attention?
Suraj is the man who introduced designer things with his debut film Maine Pyar Kya. He concentrated on lavish factor in HAHK and further kept this flagship of luxurious life in his films HSSH and MPKDH. He divided history of Raj Shri films in to two parts. Pre Suraj phase and post Suraj Phase.
He took stories from his banner and mixed them with the lavish style of Yash Chopra’s Vaqt and Raj Kapoor’s Bobby and made a market for his kind of films. Though Raj Kapoor did not follow his Bobby formula again but Suraj sticked to this formula till audience rejected his MPKDH.
This is different matter that Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar got inspiration from Suraj’s lavish films and even left him behind.
Vivah cant be a small budget film. Suraj cant leave his attachment with riches and richness. but that should be a honest factor with him because he has been born with silver spoon in his mouth and he knows that kind of life only.
His “Prem” never can be a middle class working man because he sees himself in this character. A Prince who is soft and humble at heart.

RK, great observation on the Suraj Barjatya brand of filmmaking. The one thing that seperates him from the Chopra’s/Johar’s is that (with the exception of MPKDH, which he himself admits as being a market driven mistake), Barjatya makes films from the heart. You’re right, his films do involve mansion type homes and the main protagonist of Prem is usually very Prince-like in that he’s the heir of a big fortune.

But then its not always the same Prem. In MPK & HAHK Prem was extroverted, talkative and boyish, whereas in HSSH & Vivah Prem was introverted, soft-spoken and showed maturity and sensitivity. MPKDH had a double-dosage, one of each Prem (with huge over/under doses respectively).

But the one thing that remains constant is that Prem is a down-to-earth guy with good values.

What worked for MPK and now in Vivah is Prem falling in love with a simple middleclass girl, and rather than having her adapt to his lavish lifestyle, he took to her simple and middleclass life.

Plus the narrative style, especially in Vivah, is very subdued, very simple. It’s completely opposite of the over the top, loud, trying to be slick-glitzy-fancy style.

That’s where Barjatya differs from his peers, and that’s where the honesty in his filmmaking shines through.

    Harneet Singh,
Everybody who has eyesight knows how to view a film.
Especially, If its interaction between our two eyes and scenes running on the screen only.
But certainly film viewing or any viewing of any art form is too personal entirely dependent on viewer.
I had/have no intention to suggest you about viewing of a film or films in general.

But here we discuss several other things related to films, whatever comes up at the time of discussion. It can be hisoty or it can be a fact that dIrector has copied these and these scenes in his film from these old films. So discussion is never limted to that particular film only. For example: Suraj Barjatya copied Bobby, when Salman Khan takes Bhagya Shri to party given by sister of Mohnish Behal. Entire party sequency is frame to frame copy of Bobby, where Rishi Kapoor takes Dimple to the party thrown by Aruna Irani and Rishi’s old room mate tries to rape Dimple.
Here you will hardly find hard core fans of a particular film maker. Everybody is praised here for their goods and everybody is raped here for their mistakes. and everybody is everybody, even so called Gods of films. Before your emotions are hurt at PFC, I think it shd be understood very well.
Hope scene is clear and we may go on discusssing the films:)
