Pinky or Teja or Baburao
“bhabhi chahe kitni bhi sexy ho usse dhekhna nahi chahiye……”
“imandar officer ka jaandar beta….istamal karta hai colgate”
The blade plate…..the cool glares….the irreverence and to top it all, the name. Pinky from Daud is and will be one of the most adorable [adorable?] characters Paresh Rawal played. I am in all humility and ignorance not sure how one is to write such a character and ask one to act.
This guy is supposed to be a master/maniac mind of terror. This guy had a love life but unfortunately killed her over a fight. Should they go for a 12 to 3 film or 6 to 9….because in Pinky’s words.
“pyaar me jaan deneki himaat honi chahiye….”
How cool is that. Does Yash Chopra know this tenet of Love. Shit if he did then all the Kirans and Soniyas and all the Punjabi kudies [how come all Punjabi boys and girls are fallin love….how come there is only one des i.e. Punjab whenever a Punjabi NRI refers to India……and all NRIs are Punjabis…ok…ok…back to Pinky.] would have been shot in the temple as we would have loved to. If Pinky had his way no National Award for Best Supporting Actor for Karishma Kapoor for Dil To Pagal Hai. I am sure she must have been the first to go….if Pinky was Rahul.
For all of Pinky’s gems alas……as I had mentioned only if Manoj Bajpai had caught the tone and not made such a serious start…even Aashish Vidhyarthi….they just could not get the point.
Probably that’s what puts these [how many are there anyways] actors way above the rest. Catch the tone. The irreverence, the unpredictability, the sarcasm…all intact…but you still take this Pinky seriously. He is not the villain who just makes funny faces as he is about to rape the woman and waits till eternity to make the move till the hero comes and puts the just slipped pallu back. Pinky has a gun and he will shoot.
Like I remember I always thought Om Puri was the class act in Jane Bhi Do Yaaron. I could actually believe that there could be a guy like him. The sport car/coffin scene with Satish Shah….till the very end with the Mace “oye…Tarneja..”…..Om Puri was outstanding.
Probably that’s why Paresh Rawal manages to make even a Priyadarshan film watchable. [off late I feel even he cannot save them…how much can one actor shoulder when the director insists he wants all his Over the top actors instructed to shout like on a zillion decibels to be fitter in one single frame in all his climaxes….]
Another gem from Mr. Rawal
“Omelet ka raja aur bread ka badshah…….humara bajaj…..”
The bad hairpiece, the pack of cards……and the non-existent mark [maai teja hun mark edhar hai….aree….kaunsa mark…??????].Teja of Andaz Appna Appna.
Though Pinky and Teja appear right up there for me, Baburao from “Hera Pheri” has always been the more popular and has never let Pinky and Teja get their due, I feel.
Though Baburao was super…..Pinky and Teja had the edge. Baburao had the following which Teja and Pinky never had and they still pulled it off….and how.
BABURAO’s props.
Ø The “soda” glass
Ø The accent
Ø The baniyan and the dhoti
Ø The posture and the walk
I know many even with all this would not have made Baburao the Baburao we know. But Pinky and Teja according to me were far more superior acts as they had to do it sans the props….it was Paresh Rawal all the way 100%…..no exaggerated accent….no exaggerated movements and what acts they were.
I think it’s much more of a challenge to pull off any character without the props i.e the external characteristics and get into the soul full on. There are instances of other such performances which have been hailed by many, the critics and the viewing public. The top slot I guess belongs to one such performance in recent times.
Abbaji from Maqbool. I see a fatwa ordered against me as I write this but for me Irrfan Khan and Piyush Mishra were far better acts than Abbaji in Maqbool. The walk…the false paunch…the slur,……all great but just see what Irrfan Khan did without all that…
Just that I wanted to know what others feel. Where so much importance is given to the look, posture and tone and stuff….even if there are should it not just look like second nature rather than “look guys I am performing”. I saw that in Baburao and Abbaji. But Teja and Pinky were just plain delight…..Let me know …..Pinky or Teja or Baburao….

Recent Posts:

Good Post. For me it is Pinky anyday!!!
Great post; have always felt that Paresh in Daud was such an underrated performance. Teja in ‘AAA’ was a cakewalk for Paresh though, IMHO - its the kind of act that Paresh does so routinely and effortlessly in the current comic capers, doesn’t really stretch him at all.
Talking about Paresh’s villainous acts, has anybody here seen this obscure Telugu flick called ‘Kshanam Kshanam’? It was directed by RGV, and had Sridevi in it. Sridevi wasn’t all that great (at her sqeaky worst here), but o-boy, was Paresh awesome !!!
For me ‘Kshanam Kshanam’ was Paresh’s best performance till date. Its not obscure, its a cult classic, it was way ahead of its time and is considered one of the best comedies in telugu cinema.
There is one more movie called ‘money’(Produced by RGV), where he plays a guy who tries to kill his wife. I would say He is one of the most liked character actors in the recent telugu cinema.
@Indianoguy: Sorry dude, not very familiar with Telugu cinema. Saw the movie based on an article / blog from Prem Panicker on rediff (a series of chats), where he named ‘this obscure little film’…his words, not mine :). Was merely quoting…but yeah, Paresh was awesome in that (Sridevi spoiled the movie foe me, though).
@ Vasan…One of the funniest dialogues “EVER” was from Daud by our own Mr.Pinky…
Pinky and his gang are running and catch a “running” bus…the Conductor comes and says ..”Ticket..Ticket”…Pinky goes: “nahi Chahihe(Dont need)…This one cracks me everytime i recall the scene..dont even have to watch the scene…just the mention of it is enough to crack me up and make my day…ohh wow..i see it happening now..Lol!!!
awesome man …the bus scene ..the climax…infact i think i even tried to do that once while travelling…no …no one saw the humor…..
SOme of the funniest dialogues
“rakh, phone rakh tujha maaila” Babu rao disconnects the wrong number caller (Dinesh Hingoo). “BABURAO JI?” calls Shyam, and Baburao, irratated by the phone nuisance and surprised at the same time, goes “saala, kuthriya, rakh ne baad bhi bolta hain?” - Hera Pheri
“mana gypsy lo prayaanam baaga jariginda?” Nayar asks Satyabhama who stole his jeep with Chandu - Kshana kshanam.
A villager asks Nayar in the bus-stand “Saaru, ee bassu yaadgiri gutta pothunda?” and Nayar, discomforted (by the loss of his jeep), tired and annoyed, growls back “enquiry kanispistunda?” - Kshana kshanam
- One of my favorite Paresh movies was Andaz Apna Apna… I feel the chemistry too played a great factor between Paresh, Viju Khote and Ajit clone - right from “kiske Mama ki bandook?” to “mark idhar hain…” it’s tragic to see it took such a long time for this guy to finally make it. And yeah in my view the second most perfectly performed role was by Paresh himself in Dacait (the first goes to the late Balraj Sahni in Garam Hawa)
@wb.. lol at the Hera Pheri dialogue.. that was pretty great!!
@oz.. its been a while since i thought about Andaz Apna Apna.. it was quite funny when i last watched it… i think i will have to watch it again and see how i feel about it now..
and Kshanam Kshanam.. never heard of it.. man!! I am super behind…i guess i have a lot of catching up to do(from early 1900s)
teja because i am on amongst the many fans of andaz apna apna.there is another paresh rawal character.can’t remember the name of the film.there is a line in the film which he repeats “bharat mata isse kuch nahi aata”. i felt that character was also hillarious.sanjay dutt was the hero in that film.can someone remember the film?
was the film “Kabzaa”? i am not sure….someone can confirm.
vasan i dont think it is kabzaa.he had a serious role in kabzaa
I think that movie was Ravan Raaj where paresh had a song too picturized on him!
Thanedar Bishnu Pandey (Paresh Rawal) in Dacait and baburao in herapheri… are two most powerful performances by paresh….
he almost started out usual fake encounter schenes…..
My fav’ Paresh performances are in Dacait, Sir, Kshanam Kshanam, Sardar, Daud and Hera Pheri. Also thought he was damn funny in that ridiculous movie where a woman keeps saying abba Jabba Gabba only….don’t remember what it was, but iwas so stupid it was funny!
I didn’t like him in the recent YHTKH though.
And I didn’t like him in Tamahnna or Raja either…don’t think he’s an actor who can carry off roles like that. Have any of you seen Paresh on stage - I haven’t had the chance to, but would love to!
He sucked big time in Raja. Even in the new movie ‘malamaal weekly’ he was terrible. I just have seen his hindi movies and my fav are the one mentioned in this article. Even in Mohra i thot he was funny.
sardar, paresh rawal did this film directed by ketan mehta
ignored by everyone but read in filmfare tht its one of HIS best performances (i mean he feels so), dvd available on shemaroo.
chk out this film he looks like sardar vallabh bhai patel and thts wht works for him
a v seroius film though
Ranjeet that abba jabba dabba was in Judaai….with a question mark supermanish curl on his forehead. I also loved him in Arjun. Though it was a small one… he was awesome and a sure indicator of things to come. Another unforgetable cameo….was “AMOD SHUKLA”…….super right from “we are not here to question the government we are here to serve it”……to that scene where he is shot….AMOD of Satya left a super punch just like the film.It pains me that he is more in demand [sorry for using the word "demand" sounds like i am refering to a whore....] for his films by Priyadarshan….one more Priyan googly…he insists on typing his credits as “FILMED BY PRIYADARSHAN”…..i have seen “directed by XX”…”a film by XX”….”a XXX Film”….what what is this “FILMED BY….” I don’t think he is the DOP of his films…or he is saying he just switches the camera on and the actors do what they want….thats how his films look like anyways now a days…..God! I want the Priyan of Gardish and Muskurahat and Kalapani back…
Oh yeah, it was Judaai. Don’t really remember Arjun, but yes…he rocked in Satya. In fact, I always felt that Mohanlal’s character in Company was an extension of Paresh in Satya.
Yes, Paresh is getting typecast nowadays, he perpetually plays the fumbling, grumbling innocent character from ‘Hera Pheri’, or its variants. An interesting character with great scope for a different approach was the inspector in Priyan’s ‘Yeh Tera Ghar…’, but Paresh misinterpreted the role, I think. If you watch the Mallu original, and you’ll see what I mean.
I don’t agree with you about ‘Gardish’ - the original was a masterpiece, and Priyan destroyed it in Hindi. The soul of the movie was absolutely lost, though Amrish Puri did give a good performance.
Some of ace Dialogues from ANdaaz Apna Apna
“Tum jo ho woh tum nahi koi aur hai, woh jo hai woh woh nahi koi aur hai, main jo hoon woh main nahi, ya main bhi koi aur hoon? Main kaun hoon”
“Teja main hoon mark iddhar hai.”
“Amar aur Prem, yaane ke Amar Prem. Naam sunte hi main samajh gaya tha ke tum dono awwal darje ke filmi aur awaare ladke ho”
“Yeh Vasco D Gama ke zamane ka Gun hain”
“Kiske Mama Ki Gun Hai”
lol.. this whole thread reminds of personal experiences. I remember back in the days me and my mates would imitate lots of Paresh’s dialogues when we were just goofing around and being silly. its not just the dialogues but the way he delivers them and brings the character alive - is to me his real genius.
You literally can’t think of anyone else fitting that role once he plays it.
“uhhhh do cup kyu.. ek cup vapas le jao.. do dost ek ki pyale mein chai piyenge”
ok, this weekend, Andaaz Apna Apna
KSHANA KSHANAM was dubbed in Hindi and is available as HAIRAAN. inspite of the dub its a fairly engaging watch….one of RGV’s best road movies…..Sridevi was screechy but her ‘Devudu, devudu, devudu….’ prayer routine was awfully funny…..
ANDAZ APNA APNA - was probably a fluke the way it ultimately turned out. I mean how could anyone design something so insanely funny as this…not Raj Kumar Santoshi of the current day !!!! My favourite dialog from the movie :
‘Mujhe nahin jaana hai kya London?’
The lost puppy forlorn expression on his face was something to die for laughing!!!
He was pretty decent in his debut movie ARJUN as well. I think all his notable performances have been covered in various posts above.
I am watchin andaaz apna apna NOW!!!! This thread made me all nostalgic and run back to finally buy it!
Its my most fav comedy of all times.
“ye teja teja kya kya hai ye teja teja…”
dhaak ki tikki dhaak ki tikki
wow! shakti kapoor was just perfect!
and the way tiku talsania laughs at seeing him in the end completes his character.
ajit’s son n viju khote were a perfect silly conmen team.
and the nukkad guy(”ye hum kaun hain?!”)
“malik, jitna tha sab laaya hoon”
“aap beech mein baithiye, nahi nahi fir main chalaaoonga kaise”
unka ek sawaal mere do do jawaab
bechaara koi gehre sadme ka shikaar lagta hai(a wildly hysterical n ecstatic salman laughing at aamir n raveena)
haila! govinda!
…tsch tsch…i wish it could be remade….
nooo! i take my words back! it should NEVER be remade
I also think that Paresh was top notch in Bhagban. The chemistry between him and AB sr, and between Lilette Dubey and Him was awesome, and that is what was lacking in Babul.
[...] January WB 08:07 pm Add comment 1 Views Thanks to Vasan Bala’s post on Paresh Rawal, yesterday I watched Daud again. [...]
whenever i think of paresh rawal it reminds me of his role in “NAAM” and the dialouge from the same movie “Yeh one way hai..yahan …” dont remember the complete dialouge…he has a good performance in “Awara Paggal Deewana” but the best still is remains “Teja” (Andaaz apna apna)…..for me the best dialouge in the movie by paresh rawal was “yeh phirauti ki rakkam hai ya …mayat ka chanda ..sale chindi chor” the whole scene his hilarious right from teja showing the gun “yeh dekh yeh dekh “… both the tejas are his best performances one as a villian in (NAAM) and one as a comedian in Andaaz apna apna
Wow!!
I have always felt that Paresh never quite got his dues for ‘Daud’, and whilst I agree its not Ramu’s best film to date, I can’t help but smile and laugh each time i see it!
I absolutely adore Paresh in this film… i’m so glad so many of you got the humour, just goes to show the character didnt fail after all!
I see how alot of his famous lines have been covered from the film, and alongside all the above comments, i’d like to add a couple more….
I love the way he refers to Manoj Bajpai and his love interest as ‘kabootar’ who go ‘gootter goo gootter goo’ before he goes into the ‘teen se che…nau se baran’ story!
Also when he threatens to cut the young boys mouth and says ‘Tu to saari umar hasta rehga (refering to mouth being cut open and the advertisment for Colgate) aur tera baap tujhe dekh kar saari umar rota rehega’!!
Hilarious!
Also when Pinky finally finds Daya Shanker and goes into the whole ‘Tere peeche saara desh ghooma hoon… gear stick ghumaate ghumaate haath mein dard hone laga hain…’ or something to that effect.
And then there is his ‘humble’ request to Pushkar to get a silencer as the the noise of gun shots is too loud for him…
Man, all the dialogues he mouths are top notch!
Why didnt Neeraj Vohra get an award for them?? (They were by Neeraj weren’t they???)
We could write pages and pages on Pinky i guess… i really never got over his performance in ‘Daud’.
He makes up for all the loop holes i thought.
My head is clogged up with bugs and germs else i’d think of so many more fab lines…
Btw, the music was ace!!
Too ahead of its times….
Background score by Rahman was also fantastic!
One of those albums that never becomes stale.
I can listen to it even today… Surprised no one mentioned ‘Zahreela pyar’.
Asha was amazing!
Guys, why are you ppl just quoting Daud.He had a similar role(or shld i say, he did it in a similar way) in the Sanjay Dutt,Urmilaa starrer ‘Khubsoorat’ which was the movie i think Rony D’ Costa was referring a few posts back.i think in that movie, he was a quoting a lot of advertisements in a manner similar to how Pinky would have said those lines.
both those guys were probably the most ‘humorous-but-scary villains’ i can recall.
and yeah in Judaai his scene with Kader Khan - AMAZING(in case you dont remember where Kader Khan asks the questions in rapid-fire mode to Paresh Rawal)
@vasanbala y is it that all the xx variants(refering to ‘filmed by xx’ variants) have 2 ‘x’s while ‘a XXX film’ has 3′x’s.some1 getting naughty/dirty here or me reading too much into it? >:)
just recalling another nice dialouge- the 1 where Paresh hits ‘Tarzan’ and scolds him for being such a strong man.
also Ranjit, about ‘Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar’,dude why are you taking the Mallu thing as the reference point.i mean it can be said that the mallu guy acted better or sumthing but to question some1’s interpretation,i think, we have no rite.the thing is that despite everything Paresh’s portrayal was believable and all and hence a question of misinterpretation doesnt arise as unless we see the mallu film(i havent seen it, purely going by ur account) we dont realise paresh’s shortcomings in that role.but on its own it is good enuf rite?i dunno if what i am trying to say is clear or not.
and hey just recalled that scene when Ashish Vidyarthi says ki “sorry main kissi sholay se milla nahi” or was it sum1 else who said that thing?
@Rbehemoth: Let me answer your question this way: if somebody remade ‘Forrest Gump’ in Hindi, wouldn’t you compare the lead actor with Tom Hanks? Or for instance, wouldn’t you compare the actors in the upcoming RGV’ Sholay? Didn’t you compare Ajay Devgun in ‘Main Aisa Hi Hoon’ with Sean Penn of ‘I am Sam’ - I know I did. The same thing here too.
Reg Paresh in YTGYMG, it was not that he acted badly. But I do believe he read the role wrongly (like RGV says Manoj did in Daud), due to which a lot of scenes with huge comic potential failed to click (which were rip-roaring in the original). I think it was a role (as written originally) more suited for Rajpal Yadav.
YTGYMG was a scene-by-scene remake of the Mallu original (there’s an old Tamil remake too. Terrible acting by Sunil Shetty ruined the film, IMO.
“Terrible acting by Sunil Shetty ruined the film, IMO” - Now for ChristSake tell me when he did anything else.
rbehemoth - even bade Miya chote miya had Paresh in similar role as Daud
@DK: He (Sunil Shetty) was ok - just barely - in Jungle, Hera Pheri and to a lesser extent, in Border. But I agree, he’s a terrible actor
!!
i thgt he was decent Kaante and a few others.but somehow i never thgt of him as a terrible/intolerable/unbareable actor.coz sumhow whenever these 2 words are said ‘Fardeen Khan’/'Zayed Khan’/'Ria Sen’(was it the other sister or this 1?) crop up in my head and i inevitably draw comparisons with them and i find SS to b much better than these ppl. i just think of him as a BAD ACTOR to a certain extent.
@Jwalant in ‘BADE MIYAN chote miyan’, Paresh’s character was not half as ‘attractive’/'lovable’/'memorable’ in Khubsurat/Daud.though ofcourse in this as well i liked him. just recalling that dialouge that he says while kidnapping Ramya Krishnan - “Chalo chalo ladies first, ladies first.”
@Ranjeet point taken and btw i dint compare Ajay Devgan and Sean Penn coz i havent seen either of those movies. but i did compare him in ‘Deewangee’ wid Ed Norton in ‘Primal Fear’ :”>.
i hope i am readable in my previous comment coz on reading again,i find that there r lots of errors. apologies.
@rbehemoth: I love Ed Norton..he’s so GOOD!! Deewangee….:((. Thought Anniyan / Aparichit - cliched and heckneyed though it was - was a better ode to Primal Fear (though I still prefer the book by William diehl to the various film versions).
man, i love Ed Norton as well(my fav holly actor i think at the moment).in some respects feel that he is somewat similar to Aamir Khan.shy/not liking to b a celebrity/in the limelight etc. but i prefer Norton over AK.
watched PF after watching Deewangee. They say Zinda is Oldboy raped. i think Ajay Devgan in Deewangee was Ed Norton’s performance raped.Have since then had a bias against Ajay Devgan since then.
havent seen Anniyan/Aparichit or read the book but have heard that its significantly different(positiviely so) from the movie(courtesy: wikipedia, imdb message boards)
rbehemoth: Primal Fear is not very different from the novel, but just not as good IMO. Lets not talk about Devgan or Deewangee. My respected for his newfound talent as an actor dwindled considerably after I saw Deewangee and then ‘Main Aisa Hi Hoon’. He can do ONLY the Company / Omkara silent routine, I think (though Bhagat Singh was a pleasant exception).
Anniyan is nowhere even close to Primal Fear (except that the lead, Vikram, suffers from MPO). However, the final scene from Primal Fear (the swicthing scene) has been flicked, and Vikram has done it pretty well - of course, he’s a damn good actor, and is capable of more IMO.
Zinda is Oldboy all the way - esxcept for the climax. In Oldboy, the climax tied evrything together, like a neat jigsaw puzzle. By modiying it and ’suiting it to Indian taste’, S.Gupta proved that he didnt even understand the damn movie! Dutt was okay in Zinda, though.
rbehemoth - Btw, one Norton fan to another ;), have u seen American History X? That’s my fav’ Norton performance so far (though Red Dragon comes a close second)…
Edward is amazing!
I do think he’s always given outstanding performances in all his films.
I especially loved him in ‘Fight Club’ which, by the way, is a brilliant movie….
David Fincher Zindabaad!\:d/\:d/
And Ranjit, you didnt like ‘Anniyan’??!!
Man, I loved it!
Vikram sure can act can’t he…Awesome actor!!
@Steve: I did like Vikram in ‘Anniyan’. Just that I found ‘Anniyan’ repetitive in content - the same musing on corruption that has pervaded India, from Hindustani, Nayak - expected more from a Shankar-Vikram combo.
The fact that I went all the way from Long Island to NJ to watch the movie might have contributed to my disenchantment !!
Ah… ok thats understandable then.
I remember feeling the same when i went to see Sridevi’s ‘ARMY’ back when it released, and as ‘bollywood’ wasn’t so big, there were limited cinema’s which showed Hindi films.
So there I was, on a bus, then train, then cab, then bus again to see this film at the ‘nearest’ cinema and i bloody hated it!!
I do love Sridevi, to me there is no one as complete as her, but the film??
Oh man, it just made me feel like going :((:((:((:((
So yeah, all that has to be taken into consideration I guess.
Oh yeah i love American History X.He seemed(seems??) to LIVE the character.i mean his whole body language+his physique+just abt everything.he played the charismatic+mislead youth to the TTTTT(more than 1 T if thats possible!).in fact i often wonder how he managed to do FC right after AHX(physique wise).
Hard to judge which role he performed better-AHX or FC.though i must admit that after watching AHX was trying to behave like him(mannerisms etc.) :”>.
uhhh there seems to b a problem.
in fact i often wonder how he managed to do FC right after AHX(physique wise).
– i meant
in fact i often wonder how he managed to do FC right after AHX (physique wise).
@rbehemoth: Yes, its impressive how beefed up he looks in it, isn’t it? None of our heroes even try stuff like that (except a stray Kamal Hassan in Abhay, or Vikram in Sethu / Tere Naam). Have Naseer or Om ever done a physical transformation for their roles - just wondering…..
@steve: Thought Sridevi’s performances became increasingly shrill as she got older. Loved her in ‘Mr India’, ‘Moondram Pirai’ (the orig of ‘Sadma’), the mom in ‘Khuda Gawah’, parts of ‘Lamhe’…but she used to make those shrill, giggly faces and noises all the time - thought it detracted from otherwise fine performances all the time. Of course, its another matter that many Bollywood actresses follow her ‘method’ (Manisha, Urmila, Shilpa etc).
hmm of the top of my mind Aamir Khan, they say, beefed up for Mangal Pandey although i guess it wasnt a HUGE transformation but a lot more subtle.
also i do recall that Om Puri lost considerable amount of weight for Aakrosh but frankly, i dont remember much of the movie as was too young when my brother watched that movie with me(they were telecasting that on TV, i think). i remember him talking about the end of the movie(scene between Amrish Puri and Nasseruddin Shah) to me and how gr8 it was. thats a bit off topic though.
i think it just requires a mainstream actor(or probably 2-3 younger ones of the likes of Shahid Kapur/John Abraham etc.) to undergo such a physical transformation in A SUCCESSFUL MOVIE before it becomes the latest fad(like the one we had where changing hairstyles became the latest ‘in’-thing) and other guys(Salman Khan etc.) follow suit till it becomes a common thing.
and as an end note: i felt that Abhay/Alavandan were potential masterpieces. i love Abhay’s characterisation(felt shades of Hannibal Lector-’Red Dragon’/'Silence of the Lambs’/'Hannibal’). i love the way he was portrayed through the major part of it. i even love how they shot it-Vijay’s part first then waited for Kamal’s ‘beefing up’ and then shooting Abhay’s part. yeah, its a different issue that the overall movie was a HUGE disappointment.
@rbehemoth: Don’t remember much of ‘Aakrosh’ either. Yeah, Kamal did rip off Hannibal quite a bit, but he was tremendous, cant think of a lesser actor exuding the same sense of eeriness and menace. The movie was a huge whopper, though.
Another example I thought of - not really preparation - was Kamal in ‘Sagara Sangamam’. Apparently, to get the voice of the old man right, he screamed himself hoarse for 10 minutes. Kinda overboard, me thinks
!!
As an aside: Had a friend in the unit where Hrithik did the training bits of ‘Lakshya’. He used to say that they had quite a bit of fun at Hrithik’s expense, who could bearly keep up with the training routine for 5 minues without teaking a break. Biceps are not everything, I guess :).
first things first, paresh is awesome. one of the rare breed of actors who can rise above a script. and for those who haven’t seen him in action with theater.. i saw his play “naughty @ forty” a few years back.. and he was mindblowing! kept the audience in stitches the entire time.. (and surprisingly tall too!) i saw an interview of his a long time back that he is able to refine his film roles from the amount of theater he’s in touch with. and it sure as hell shows on screen.
…and another ed norton fan here
i’d call him the “silent warrior” and find him to be like irrfan in many ways. does quality films. churns out amazing performances. stays away from gossip and media. that’s what we need more of.
@Striker: Yes, Paresh is so tall, wonder why he looks so short in the movies. I saw him in an interview, and his real-life persona is SO different from the trademark bumbling, wisecracking roles he does.
Not related, sorry…read a quote by Om Puri today, its so true:
Om Puri to Naseer (Shah): “They have distributed all the good roles among their relatives, while we are left holding a stethoscope in one hand and a banana in the other.”
It is late 80’s, Doordarshan is just gone showing soapoperas late night. earlier there was one serial in one night. Hum Log hogging 2 (or 3 days), fridays for Yeh jo hai Jindgi. Now it is 10.20 pm winter night..and there is a new serial tonight..”Bante Bigadte” Does anybody remember that. Though I used to sleep early..but there was a character ..so hillarious, so original and so different from other serials…He caught my and my family’s imagination. We used to wake up so late just to watch him. Shafi Inamdar and Swaroop Sampat were other 2 characters. Can I get a copy of that from somewhere. ( Later I know Paresh married to Swaroop Sampat)
