Piyush Mishra – Gulaal
My first encounter with Piyush Mishra was through a music cassette I had borrowed from my cousin way back in 1993, My cousin was working with him on a theater project under ACT 1theator group and the songs belonged to a play on communal harmony. I kept the cassette with me because it had an introduction by Naseeruddin Shah,(Naseer’s performance was still was still rare in those days). I wasn’t in Delhi and couldn’t watch the play but the songs from the cassette were unlike anything I had ever heard. They just charged everyone who heard-It was earthly voice of Piyush Mishra, Melodious compositions sweet enough to bring tears in one’s eyes and with them came words craftily woven around the melodies, The words came flying like stings and they scorched and bit the heart and the soul, His voice echoed in the ears and stayed there. The necked audacity of his outcry for change inspired one to bare his heart out and initiate the change. The album started with “Ek gardan pe saikdon chehre-Aur un chehron pe hazaron daag” from kaify aazmi’s gazal “Bahuroopani”- rest of the songs were Piyush Bhai’s(As my cousin used to address him) brainchild.
The songs like “kaun hain hum aur hain aaye kahan se” or “Ye jo sadak par khoon bah raha hai” or most preferred song also referred as The motercycle song – “ Jab raat gaye mere gaon ki sadak par “.I curse the day when I dubbed the cassette and overwrote it with Jagjeet Singh’s Gazals, because those songs couldn’t be found later, Thankfully, I had mugged a few and sung them amongst friends, Thanks to those songs I earned a reputation of “Italaan” amongst friends and colleagues. I received compliments from girls on style of those songs and I made most of those compliments.
I became a big fan of Piyush Mishra, I watched his play long back telecasted on DD(I don’t remember the name), Watched him acting in “Dil Se” “Matrubhoomi” and recently in “Maqbool” as well.
After all these movies and screen plays (The legend of Bhagat Singh, Yahaan),I must say that “Gualal” has done justice to what he has to offer to bolliwood-His music and words. The compositions and lyrics are amazing, they have been sung with equal energy by Him, Swanand and Rahul Ram. The movie brought out his brave words, his deep concern for political and social mess around him and it is the restlessness of this poet which brings all this passion in his songs. it can be debated whether the music brought out the finer aspect of the movie or the background and treatment of the movie nourished the boldness of the music and lyrics, Whatever it is, The audience got to see Piyush Mishra at his best and I hope that this partnership between Anurag and him flourishes so that Piyush Bhai could come out free as he always was.

Gulzar sa’ab aside, poetry seemed to have been kicked aside in the mainstream cinema. Swanand kirikire and Piyush have brought it right back, and how! You rock Piyush Bhai.
Nice write up dude…i met him for the recording of a TV commercial we have done for one of our client. He is a very down to earth, simple and cooperative. And above all, what an amazing voice he have…simply awesome.
I really hope that the Indian film industry explores more of this dynamite. I really thank Anurag for showing his real talent on screen.

Ak is doing great for the industry by showcasing the talents like Amit Trivedi and Piyush Mishra. Honestly, I never knew Piyush is such a multi-talented genius ( what voice, what lyrics !).
I can understand your frustration now, erasing the songs with Jagjit Singh. I can see the solid reason to become a big fan of Piyush Mishra, after Gulaal.

There was a serial on DD about 12-15 years back. Piyush Mishra played the role of a very articulate Terrorist Leader. He keeps brainwashing the hero. It was simmilar to what Pankaj Kapoor played in ROJA, but Piyush Bhai played with such intensity that I could never forget it. I watched every episode every morning on DD Metro just to hear Piyush Mishra give lectures to atankwadi’s…
And the DD serial he wrote ….The lyrics were–

I am so happy after listening to his songs especially lyrics from Piyush in Gulaal.
He is a treasure of creativity and I am so proud of Hindi as our language. Creative
Works like his can revive beauty and expressions of our national language.
I hope he gets his long overdue respect and recognition from one and all.

ultimate awesome kamaal ka lyrics hai by piyush mishra. the best n rememberable part of the movie is the CLIMAX super hit hai.
this is a awesome work from Piyush Mishra. Probably for the first time I saw such an original work. Now I see some movie makers are making movies on our society. Great direction by Kashyap. All songs are so much integral part of the movie that entire movie revolves around it. Not like popular cinema, where songs do not make any sense to the story.
I wish Piyush to continue the good work and come up with more original songs in future. Hope filmfare will also recongnize his work.
