Play School Rock !!

A scene out of “Malgudi Day” where Swami asks his wise grandmother “why is the sky blue……?” “why is papa like this……” “when will I have a kid sister…” (his mother is pregnant….he believes it will be a girl). Great moments from my childhood….then came the “Wonder Years”…hold both of these close to my heart…..Jim Morrison and the lot came much later….at a different age….and the questions they asked and the things they said……had a different meaning…donno if I got them…but they sure said it….they will live on…..but not sure if they were the same ones which were asked by Swami….

Rock On !! asks me to think of my play school days questions which Swami asked…even I asked them….some were cleared in Science class in a few years….a Rock band which says…. “why is the sky blue…….the earth round…and water wet…If I have not thought about it as yet….then think about them now DOUBLE EXCLAMATION….am ok with all that….but then don’t wear a Gun and Roses T-shirt…don’t have Morrison on the wall…don’t frame a shot with a Dylan CD in the foreground.

Finally!! saw “THE!!” film. People cheered…..the grand finale was glittered with a Sameer inspired…..song… “you are there with me….everything is there……you are not then what not….kinds….” happy the rock band stayed away from Dil….Jigar…Nazar…(I like the “Saat Din” one though…..). Maybe more than anything else…it’s Shankar Ehsaan and Loy and the lyricists who let me down !! of course the screenplay writer must have written.
”And they gave the performance of a lifetime”….but then it had to be supported by great music than just great camerawork.

HERE THE RANTS END….well almost

It’s not half as bad as I have venomously started the post. It has it’s moments….and the first thing that comes to my mind is…..Arjun Rampal has indeed graduated from Plywood to Oak Wood….not being mean…actually thought he did rather well for himself here. In fact for most of the film I stayed with him and his family. WOWOW……Shahana Goswami…..GRADE ONE ACT. Loved every moment of her. Superb….now who will cast her in the lead someday….let her hogg all the screen time and space….hopefully someday that happens.

The beginning did give a few lumps. Got me back to the days when the VCR was got home…and “Jdango” was played first….yes my father brought that….a potentially R raterd film……which was followed by “Nandodi Mannan” and “Adimai Penn” both MGR blockbusters…saw all three of them back to back…..my father introduced me to the westerns… I discovered Kung Fu later…ditched guns for fists …it brought back memories of the days when I sat alone at Worli Sea Face…bunking “WORK” thinking…how do I reach Mani Ratnam….”Sir I want to do something..related to Cinema”….having no clue as to what…..I took my plung….a better late than never situation….still dangling….but am there…rolling in cinema dirt than anything else…hands are dirty but hygine was never the prime issue….surviving…..limping on !!

It’s about dreams….giving it that one solid shot even when every muscle is aching and the bones creaking. It does cuddle the dreams within….tickels them sometimes. Pinches it too….it will do the same for all who ever had any passion….for anything. It’s formula…it does work at a level….a definite attempt to play hide and seek with the cliché….sometimes your catch it….sometimes….you want not to notice even if you have busted it…. Kabhi Khud pe hasa main…..kabhi khud pe rooya…..na..na..na na…..na na…nana…..

The general aligation is it’s a clean Rock group…no dope…no gaalis….BUT there is a shot of KD rolling a joint…followed by him and Rob being stonned….Anyways my grudge is with the music…and a film about MUSIC…..ROCK esp…. better crack it….Paanch did….Abbas Tyrewala and Vishal Bharadwaj did it….S-E-L did not. I still swear by their DUS…..still listen to Chaandi Roop Ki….. Piya….and Sun Le mahiya…but Rock On !! hai yeh waqt ka ishara…..S-E-L laut aao doobara…..

It’s the tost of the season…can clearly see why…..the Urban affulent Mumbai is well fed…they do visit Bars and Discs which have Che and Morrison images plastered on their walls…(a shot in the film too)….but then they dance to a !!.

Great rant VB, spoken like the Mohanlal of ADs! Remember these thoughts when you pen your feature though. Lest we go ranting…

I agree with the music part. It “was” noise. I am sorry to convey earlier that Rock-is-noise. It was not meant to put that way. Rock-On music by SEL was noise according to me.

Terrific Post Bala. I watched the movie yesterday & came out with same feelings that you have mentioned.
The Scene in The Gift Shop where Purab talks about his friend Aadi the POET. God!!! nobody calls u a poet for writing such stupid lines. Meri Laundry ka Bill. Hahaha

just wondered (can not say wondering)
    imagine a rock concert
    what image comes to mind
rockers on the stage and a big gathering
    what i wondered about is
what is more important in this scene
    music or gathering
    .
can you imagine rockers rocking for two people
    it appears to me
that gathering of heard is more important than music
    .
music corresponds with state of mind
one listens to the music that corresponds with ones state of mind
to sit down in a classical concert is not a matter of will power
where pt. jasraj is going to repeat same four lines for one hour
    .
    i again just wondered
how many of indian young people or in the state of mind to relate with rock
if number is big sociologists should take note of that
    .
    one more wonder
    the word ‘rock music’
    doesn’t sound good
‘rockish sound’ would we more apt

finally! I am never gonna watch this film. glad that someone shared some thoughts at least, for a holy change.

Pritish @3 Good point you reminded me. I was also wondering what the heck POET is he. I was desparately trying to read the lines of the paper that his wife finds in the junk-room. One of the most pissing-off scene was the two Hindi Film song selection that they do !! Oh My God !! that really gives their taste of Hindi Films and music in general !! Ofcourse I know that they are into rock, but for gods sake they are staying in India !! They think of a Pancham song “Ye Din To Aata Hai” ???? Panchamda would be restless up there wondering about the choices of the Rock-Youth in India !!

    Bingo!! That was SPOT ON!!
It did have smoe stellar moments & dialogues.
I was gobsmacked when Farhan says “maine yeh nahin socha tha ki hamare beech faasle itne badh jaayenge ki main tumse nahin, tumhare answering machine se baat karoonga”
that did it for me… anyways…
SHOT THRU THE HEART & FARHAN & GANG ARE TO BLAME,
THEY GAVE ROCK A BAD NAME!!

Vasan, there’s a musician, a singer within every one of us. We still sing the songs we heard while growing up. We outgrow everything else, but not our music.
    ROCK ON !!

    Rock Phenomenon
    .
any society when becomes rich experience rock. when kids don’t have to worry over how they are going to survive in life, they go crazy
    .
its the overflowing energy of youth, which is not consumed by the worries of life
    .
but the western rock is not the answer, for india
    .
why do you need to be part of a heard to go crazy
    its still the same insecurity
if you really want to go crazy
    show some guts
    go crazy alone
    .
we have our own tradition of going crazy
    .
    that’s what a sannayasi is
he has gone crazy for the worldly wise
    and
    he has gone crazy alone
    .
only, there is no turning back
    .
    are you up to it
    if yes
    than von boyage
    if no
than enjoy rock for time being
before you fall back in the same rut

Am no bitter critic of the film….nor is my intention to run down a film which is the toast of the season…..my problem is with the imagery and it’s exploits…..in the name of Rock (am no know all….by any far means) you have a band which says it will not “COMPROMISE” on their music…with motifs of Che/Morrison lying around…they think they are better….and hate the ITEM preferring boss of a music company….my only problem is how is Magik any different for Vipsi (you have to listen to this guy to believe…..MINDNUMBING)what is it that they don’t want to compromise on?….what’s so out of the box?…that they are trying to reach out with….I am in alignment with their passion….and their love for music….but not with the outcome as shown in the film. As in the music….the characters work fine…..all of them….just wish the music was truly a non compromising one…..like the Saat Din song though…quite matter of fact…

And magik -U put it down very well….

Anyways a great debut in the offing…..”A Wednesday” watch it…

  16. parth on September 5th, 2008 2:41 am

    @ everyone

The way u believe u r “real” rock fan and Rock is your blood, the same way characters of Rock On!! believed. Magik dint make Billboard Top 10 nor NME gave their album 10/10, they just believed in their songs…Aditya Shroff wasnt awarded Gnanpeeth (i knw the spelling is wrong) for his poetry, his best frend - his bandmate - called him the great poet..

and that, imho, is wot Rock is all about!!!!!

“There is nothing conceptually better than Rock ‘n’ Roll”
    - John Lennon

  17. nillohit on September 5th, 2008 2:49 am

    @ Parth
    Can’t agree more!

  18. Vasanbala on September 5th, 2008 3:56 am

Sweet Path - “The way u believe u r “real” rock fan and Rock is your blood”

NO WHERE NEAR THAT. My blood has less hemoglobin count and am on medication….no not Rock as you would believe…I would any day have more hemoglobin..and iron..than rock.. My problem as I again state in text..is the imagery….as Rock ON!! Magik band members have the right to be judgemental on the ITEM Music company boss…and call his music crap….I say the same about them….again read…I am not against the film/screenplay/camerawork….its the music….S-E-L could have done better…..Shankar Mahadevan being a part of such a MAGIK group called “SHAKTI”..he could have done wonders…anyways it stuck a chord with you as most..am happy you had a better time….and if you read the post again…My trip down memory lane was cause I watched the film…..am not bitter on the film as I am on my S-E-L…..give me their DUS and Breathless days back anyday….they sure Rocked then…..

iske liye ek ultimate funda batata hoon
per isme kismat ka haath rahega
sanyog baith gaya to theek …warna

    aakhien khuli rakhna
ki kahien koi sadhu dikhe khanjari ke sath
    sadhu ki aakhon main dekhna
baaki apne kaam ki cheej pahchan loge
saadhu ko paanch rupaye ka gaanja pilana
    aur intezar karana
bhole ke naam ki chilam chadane ke baad
sadhu is sansarik jeevan ki vyartha per ek nirgun chedega

ek confesion karne ka man ho raha hai
mujhe sirf ek afsos hai, bas ek
main railway station ke foot over bridge se
apni train pakdne ke liye jaa raha tha
jaise hi main seedi se utarne laga
wahien kone per ek aadmi baitha hua tha
    sadhu tha
meri nazar padi, main thoda thithka bhi
    per phir neeche utar gaya
train lagi hui thi aur chalne main hi thi
aur wahi mera ek matra afsos hai
maine ruk kar us sadhu ke charon main apna sir nahien rakha
na uske pahle na uske baad
us darje ka doosra insaan mujhe nahien dikha
jis per nazar padte hi anayaas jhuk jaane ki shraddha paida ho

  22. Honhaar Goonda on September 5th, 2008 3:30 pm

vishrant bhai, i think, you misspelt the word.. it should have been ‘ghazal’, then you would have got more results, i think :-D

besides, rock/guitar has entered india jaise qawaali, ghazal, harmonium came to india. in fact, guitar has already replaced tabla and harmonium from indian filmi music… no?

  23. Phoenixnu on September 7th, 2008 12:01 pm

compltly agree…the best song of the film…..ajeeb dastaan hai yeh…kahan shuru kahan kahtam n if this is all desi rock then m wondering how indian ocean survived so many years!!
