Nikhil. V | Qwiki | June 30, 2009 at 12:19 am
A fascinating discussion with screenwriter Nancy Oliver about her debut feature ‘Lars and the real girl’. She talks to force-of-nature Jeff Goldsmith, Sr. Ed. Creative Screenwriting Magazine about the film, how she wrote it, character arcs, motivations and a lot of other things…a must listen.
Can’t get better than this if you want to understand film and screenplay writing. Many thanks to Jeff. Hope to bring you more of Jeff’s great interviews…

Thank you Nikhil…it is a real good interview… a nice insight into writing freely…
Ya, its that one cycle of deluded activity that Lars undertakes that NO talks @ so tenderly but yet it doesn’t guarantee the end of all such probabilities. This guy is mentally ill. Playing along, acting with kindness as N says is the reality that she wants to show. Perfectly fine. But Lars isnt cured completely in the end. Its a game he as a mentally ill patient begins and ends his own way. Nancy says that once he realizes the people around him love him, he knows what will happen to Bianca. So true…So what is so unusual about this. As a doc shudnt PC have seen this? Atleast felt smthg on these lines. Her presence as a maternal figure I guess was more prominent. Yes, the trigger for Lars to do this – Emily M’s pregnancy…She puts it quite well this part in this interview…I didn’t quite see it that way..
Liked her take on Gus too and why she chose kindness all over from all…Didnt sound too sugary…
The film is there so whatever she says is naturally affectionate but I couldn’t see it that way..
Best part of the interview was her approach to writing and her thot proc here…I liked it…
And True Blood is coming to India on HBO from next month I think…After SFU I’d def’ly be checking this out…Alan Ball and Nancy Oliver…
Thanks for this Nikhil. Btw, her voice sounds pretty young for a 45 yr old…Nice one…
This is awesome Nikhil…please upload more such gems if yu have ‘em.
