wtf is power awards…and why it’s given to Yash chopra and adi chopra….who are these critcs who decide critic’s awards….Darsheel gave an interview that he is not satisfied with best child actor..so what to do now..u have to give it to srk..but darsheel…so lets give darsheel critcs best actor..and srk as always the best actor….this sucks ….

by the way, didn’t Yash Chopra get the ‘power award’ before too?
What is power award anyway? Is there a policy that it will always be given to the person whose pet dog wins best actor?

I think Power is a satisfy-your-ego award. This year we could not give any other award to Adi / Yash combo so lets give them power award….
Even in any other year, I think the only people who have got this award are Adi / Yash and SRK….
And what the deal with SRK presenting the awards for the third time or was it 4th….

I don’t think the selection this year has been as bad a some of the previous years. Shahrukh delvered a worthy performance in CDI. I shudder to think what would have happened if OSO was the only SRK release last year. If he had got it for OSO, that would have been the limit!! But yes, i agree that the critic’s award becomes sort of a consolation prize!!

The only award I personally have a major problem this year is the Best Playback Singer (Male). I didn’t find anything exceptional in Shaan’s rendition. Then that’s just my opinion.

black friday and manorama were criminally ignored this year. atleast they deserved being nominated.

screenplay should have definitely gone to johnny gaddar. it was probably the best screenplay we had in the last 3-4 yrs.
in art direction i don’t know how guru can compare to blue umbrella, or how chak de can compare to eklavya in cinematography.
and how come darsheel found a nomination for best actor category and still failed to win the best debut award?
and wtf is a power award? is it the power to fix awards award? but seriously, what did aditya chopra do this year to get this award?

baah! the story will always remain the same. let’s just wait for the national awards. my only grouse with national awards is that they do not acknowledge violent movies like satya and all. johnny gaddar won’t find favour there too…

No award for SRK last year even though his KANK was much more deserving than Hritik for Dhoom 2. I think they got large bits right this year – SRK for CDI was well deserved. (As was Shreyas for Iqbal – clearly a bad choice there.) But I think Kareena was an excellent choice. Ranbir needs to be drummed out of town but unfortunately is here to stay and torture us for many years. Neil Nitin – what a find, can’t wait for more. Darsheel reminds me of a brat – says he should get the best actor award – not he should be in the best actor category! So they give him a nomination, and then a critics choice award. Was his performance really award worthy?

Awful awards – Rahman for Guru – his worst work to date. Barso re choreography – now jumping into pools and rivers is choreography? Life in a Metro screenplay – WTF – 40% or more was plagiarized!

Tabu for Cheeni Kum? It was about the worst I have seen her do.

I am sick of these popular award shows. We certainly have become a country with the ailment of “overdose of democracy”. The indian idol and the respective clones is another case over here. Why we need popular choice to determine everything? How many people who voted for all these awards and shows are really trained in the respective subjects? What makes people think that any one without any theoretical or practical knowledge and experience on filmmaking(or singing, dancing or whatever)can pass judgment over the ability of an individual who actually spent time to learn their trade and create(or perform)? Do we let our academic papers checked on the basis of popular choice like “vote for the best guy to win a PhD”? Why performing arts is considered to be a whore for everyone?
Sorry for so the rhetoric, but thank God Black Friday did not win any of those film-fairytale awards. Really do not want a film like BF to be a part of that impudent celebration of mediocrity.

    @Anurag
fifty percent of the people not aware of your movie would have become aware of it if it was indeed (and very deservingly) nominated for the best picture award. same about manorama and johnny gaddar. these awards would have meant that atleast people would catch these movies on DVDs and TV and see for themselves what good cinema is. this ‘popular award’ garb is only there to yield to the yash raj ‘power award’ power. why is there a jury anyway if this is a popular award? why not just conduct an sms poll and give all awards to shahrukh khan?

for what i know, these awards, if given properly would have brought some good movies which failed at the b.o. some eyeballs and people would have given them another chance. maybe that would have helped improve the cinematic tastes of our audience.
but i guess that is exactly what the people in ‘power’ did not want. although admittedly, chak de was indeed a very, very good movie….

Instead of looking for a way forward, the filmfare has gone totally directionless. Its a myth that filmfare awards are decided by public voting. If that be the case, then the boxoffice report should be taken as a measure of public vote. And films like Welcome and Om Shanti Om should have won hands down.

If you want to give away awards, lay down a criteria based on the final product, and not on the acceptance of the final product by the public. Films like Johnny Gaddar and Black Friday were criminally ignored.

Anand (17): one needs to understand the process for filmfare awards so that you understand what Anurag meant in his comment. people are asked to vote for their choices, and the films/ individuals that get the maximum number of votes gets the nomination. the nominations are judged by a jury and the final awards is given based on 50% popular vote and 50% jury votes. so, if (as anurag says) 50% of India doesn’t know about the film, it’s difficult to be nominated or get the award.

One can debate about this process, but with this process, it was difficult for films like BF or JG to get nominated and win(at least in the popular awards). But i guess they could have figured more prominently in the tech awards which are not based on popular vote.

AZAD (21): OSO did get a lot of nominations, because of it’s popularity and maybe the jury did not vote for it, so in the overall tally it fell short.

before anyone gets me wrong, I don’t hold a candle for Filmfare awards and am always disappointed by SRK and Chopras getting an award EVERY year. I’m just saying they have a defined process and usually stick to it. the process is open to rigging as well (as is evident from the pyarelal interview above)….but that’s the way it is!

Another thing about the Film-Fare Awards and other such “popular” awards are that they will ALWAYS be representative of the industry.

Shah Rukh Khan is the face of Hindi cinema, so it’s not surprising to see the number of awards he’s won over the years.

YashRaj Films still recognized as the #1 Production house (despite their terrible track record in 07), so it was almost inevitable that they had to be recognized somehow as well.

Neil Nitin Mukesh may have been, hands down, the best actor to debut in 2007. But Ranbir is from the illustrious Kapoor family, so…

Watch Harmen Baweja win best male debut for 2008.

As for Deepika Padukone… Besides Sonam Kapoor what other actress made her debut in 2007? I guess the Chak De Girls, but none of them had a significant enough part to be in contention for an award. Was there anyone else?

Who do we make movies for – ourselves or the viewers?

What was so wonderful about Aamir Khan’s direction in Taare Zameen Par?

Neil Nitin was courageous and made the choice to act in JG – not some mainstream popular cinema. His future choices seem as good. He aspires to perhaps be a Shreyas or a Naseer – so why are we surprised if he is not awarded and Ranbir in his towel slipping act is?

In fact CDI is a film where he pulled out a performance that was quite unique – he did not need to weep at all and sundry or give speeches to speechless parents to show us he can act. !!!!!!!!!!!! Wht happened to Maniratnam……only he made a good film with a subject… Aamir khan- ok for best debut director

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE (MALE)
    Abhishek Bachchan (Guru)
    Akshay Kumar (Namastey London)
    Darsheel Safary (Taare Zameen Par)
    Shahrukh Khan (Chak De! India)
    Shahrukh Khan (Om Shanti Om)
    Shahid Kapoor (Jab We Met)

Abhishek gave the best performance than any one in the nomination list.

    the great Amithabh’s son didn’t got 25% vote….!!!!!!(25+75%critics vote…mmmm there was a chance )

Thank god …for the supporting actors category…
Nobody can blame filmfare this time.
the only perfect choice by them (irfan and konkana)

Music Rahman is the only choice… At least he is creating something …not copiying.

Was Eklavya banned from Filmfare awards this time? Was it nominated in any of the categories? Forgive my ignorance. Not that I loved or liked the movie, but its again from one of the Chopras (though a little less influential/with less power). I wonder…

vimal you seem to hate everything associated with SRK apparently ! :-?

Guru music was ok but not all songs were good that whole song about twin was sheer cacophony it was like someone drilling in to my ear .

All the songs in OSO album were consistently good and much better and hummable and far more popular than Guru’s songs .

try humming Meetha hai kosa hai barish ka bosa hai posa hai kosa hai barish ka bosa hai :w; ..were those lyrics translated from tamil or something LOL !

music should definitely have been taare zameen par.
the other ones i can say with conviction were johnny gaddar for screenplay, eklavya for cinematography and blue umbrella for art design.
and one thing i still don’t understand is how come darsheel was eligible for best actor category but not for best male debut? can anyone please explain to me how this works?
black friday was not nominated so CDI for me was best movie. although aamir for direction did get it deservedly.
but the only consolation is that sajid khan was aptly ignored in the awards. now THAT would have killed the filmfares…

Shootout at Lokhandwala… Great movie… Vivek Oberoi should have gotten Best Negative Role award. but coz of controversies he got neglected.

For Anurag Kashyap: Which is your next movie? I want to compliment you that what u did for Return of Hanuman was what Steve Jobs did for Pixar..u gave Indian Animation Industry a chance.

    @vimal

well, I can’t remember offhand all the songs which “became” brilliant just because of his voice quality but I’ll like to name a few:

    Kitni der tak (Dilli Heights)
O re Paakhi (Khoya Khoya Chand)
    Jaanu na (Eklavya)
    Dholna (Hey Baby)
    Salam-e-ishq songs

and the song which you find normal -”Main agar Kahoon”- deserves filmfare handsdown, IMO. Then, somebody will point out that above songs were not that popular and filmfare is about popular awards, in that case “Chak de India” or “Dard-e-disco” deserve to win. “Jab se tere Naina..” is strictly an okay song and that too is because of its composition, Shaan didn’t add any value to it which is in complete contrast when Sonu sings. He brings much more to the table as a singer.

And I’m not saying that Shaan is bad but I have noticed that filmfare is not doing justice to the talent of Sonu, not only this year but over the years. Remember Himesh getting the award over “Piyu Bole” and “Dheere Jalna”! And how can somebody rate “Kabhi alvida na kehna” lower than “Chand Sifarish” purely in terms of singing?

Why are technical awards given separately??
They are still given separetely aren’t they??

“Best screenplay award” is given separetly, isn’t it? These r the kind of people who are least qualified to make statements like ..
“The Script is the king” and stuff like that..

    Morph,

I believe they used to give best screenplay in the technical section till about some years back at a separate function???
Well I think we shud not even be discussing these awards…
Everything mediocre is like communalism.. The more u discuss it, the more it starts to make sense.. The way to shut it out is to shun it completely..
