Predicting the Future.
Generally, there is a lot of buzz about the new films coming up this year. Crores have been spent on making these and more still to be spent on the marketing and hype. Some are tributes ( quote – shahrukh khan about DON) some are copies ( Lolita) some are sequels – Dhoom 2. So what will be the future of these films? I am putting my reputation (whatever little there is..heh heh ) and will predict the future of some of the forthcoming films.
So after bitching about taran adarsh and other half baked critics who give their views on films that have released – I take the insane step of predicting the most unpredictable thing in India – the success or failures of films
Before I go ahead and before I get any brickbats let me clarify - I am a HUGE big B fan, a solid SRK fan and have a soft corner for the Jr. B. But, I have still tried to be neutral.
1) DON: The original was a fast paced thriller – quite hip for its times. Farhan Akhtar has always been a trendsetter and is known for the 2 gems he has made. Other than DCH, I personally feel that Lakshya was a brilliant coming of age film. I always cherish the scenes that depict the father – son relations shown in both. DON, I feel, will get a great start. A SRK film will always get a great start no doubts about that. BUT – yes but – I think that Don will be panned by critics and fans alike. SRK will be severely criticized for his mannerisms and for the clothes he wears. People will compare the new one with the old one and eventually – it will end up as an AVERAGE HIT that too because of the Mumbai circuit and the overseas circuits.
2) Jaaneman: Salman – Akshay- Preity combo is a new one. People loved Salman and Akshay in MSK and I think that this could hit the bulls eye. But then the feeling I get from the promos is that the story is an old one – salman is the playboy, Akshay is the nerd – salman tries to help akshay get preity – preity meanwhile loves/falls in love with salman. Plus New York has become too common after K Jo’s efforts. BUT – inspite of everything – this one has Akshay looking great – Salman looking awesome (plus his drag sequence) this one should be a HIT.
3) DHOOM II – Superhit. Abhishek- Hritik-Ash-Bips- sexy beaches of rio- amazing stunts – high expectations – Yashraj films banner – this one should be a big big hit. After Krissh, this would be the biggest hit for duggu. As I said, SUPERHIT.
4) Nishabd: Ram Gopal Verma’s take on Lolita. SUPER FLOP. I have been an AB fan for the last 20 years. This film will not draw the family crowd and his loyal fans will hate him for doing this film. We want to see him as the grand old man – the patriarch in baghbaan – the sarkar – even the sexy sam – BUT not a man who falls in an overtly sexual jiah khan in Nishabd. I feel that the Big B will have a lot of explanation to give to his fans after this one ( like he had to do after Hum Kaun Hain). SUPER FLOP.
5) Sholay II: SUPER FLOP. AB has a bad habit of depending too much on directors who give him hits – Manmohan desai, Prakash Mehra, Tinnu Anand, Mukul Anand and now Ramu. But, Ramu I feel has totally lost his touch. Ramu’s sholay will be a huge embarrassment for the whole team. People will rip this film apart. SUPER FLOP.6) Kabul Express – John Abraham – Arshad Warsi – International locations – global theme and an international look and feel – a multiplex uperhit film that will be appreciated by the world wide film lovers. I feel that this one would be a BIG HIT.
7) Umrao Jaan Ada – New combo of AB and Ash. Sunil shetty plays and important role and JP Dutta wielding the megaphone. Hmmmm. This one could a tough call. BUT (yes again a but)..you have great visuals – the AB jr and Ash combo after a long time – a strong story - if the length of the film is within limits and the film doesn’t meander ( 2 major faults with refugee) the films would be Commission Earner (B-).
Guru – Mani rathnam’s take on Dhirubhai Ambani and his rise to power. Somehow, I feel that the ABjr and Ash combo is good for 2-3 films. It doesn’t have the chemistry of AB Jr and Rani that one looks forward to. Perhaps, after two films together, this one wouldn’t really draw the crowds. I also feel somehow that this films wouldn’t connect with the north Indian audiences since there is too much of a southern taste to it.. Unless Mani has a masterpiece at hand, this one follows the same path as Yuva. ( but I also feel that Abhishek will give a brilliant performance in this film) Commision Earner (B-)9) Baabul – Ravi Chopra, Big B, Salman, John, Rani – amazing cast - touching & heart warming story – this one would draw in the family crowds in droves. Again, one of the few films that I feel would connect to the urban and rural audiences. Lots of people will identify or would like to identify with characters in this one. This one, I feel, would be a SUPER HIT.
10) Vivah – again a family film. Suraj Barjatiya returns after his disastrous MPKDH. Shahid and Amrita look like a young couple that are engaged. Could be commission earner. Unfortuately the stars that draw the crowds are missing. Imagine Maine Pyar kiya with Avinash wadhwan and sheeba instead of salman and Bhagyashree. Flop – Break even
Will I be right or wrong..only time will tell..Till then why don’t you write in with what you feel and your takes on films that are about to relase.

Recent Posts:

- By jove… this actually brings out something - that I would love to see someone write in detail on PFC - the commercial fate of many a movie is decided by its title, premise or its poster… or is it?
maybe it is ..maybe ..after years of watching movies..you just get a gut feel….
@ Sophocles.. I agree with most of your observations, but feel Jaan-e-man might not turn out to be a superhit, might as well be a hit. Again.. Umrao Jaan will bomb. This would be a personal opinion, but i have started hating Aidh off late. She is getting on my nerves with that heavy breathing and underplaying her voice.. Precisely why i hated her in Shabd( It was a well made movie, but for christ’s sake kick that idiot Zayed Khan out of this industry.. give me a chance i could perform 1000 times better..lol). No idea why would Barjatya still make something like Vivaah, obviously once bitten twice shy doesnt imply him.
I was in a cab last night and the Afghani Cab driver was talking to me about Kabul Express(wtf?). He said most of the Afghan people are eagerly awaiting the movie.. that should say something about the outcome.. Hit( Could as well be super hit)
you know, i only would watch Nishabd, Sholay and Guru. I would not even given a look to any other movies, because:
Don 2006 - The gay look, don beating kuriya, jumping from a chopper to sing a song, a few actions scene from hollywood movies, not my type of movie.
Vivah: Just crap. nuff said.
Jaan-E-maan: It’s going to be cheesy, lame and unfunny. another crap movie which will get a lot of publicity, where as quality movies go unnoticed. what a shame.
Umrao Jaan: it’s going to be just a drag, and ash’s acting will be just..
Dhoom 2: Aaaaah, another crap movie from Yash Raj factory that will just make money and win gay awards.
Kabul Express: i think, the look of the movie is just misleading you guys. i don’t think it will be all that. it will be a let down
that’s just my opinion.
:-w
Guru guru guru all the fucking way for me !!!!
Don - I’ll see it once, and i will go and tell my friends, being gay is in !!!
Kabul Express - All hype and no material ???? Who knows …
Umraoo Jaan - Imaging AB Jr speaking Urdu !!! Nooooooooooooooooooo
“Imagine Maine Pyar kiya with Avinash wadhwan and sheeba instead of salman and Bhagyashree.”
My 2 cents — why not. what was salman and bhagyashree before MPK .. no bodys , the right movie at the right time and the actos just happned to be part of it. they became a success because of the movie and not viceversa.
as regards amrita and shaheed , this pair is anytimes looks made for each other than abhishek /aishwarya .. or any other .
nothing to predict the fate of the movie
well Mr sophocles (change it to nostradamus), next time all the big production houses should consult you before spending crores on making films! on second thought…you should get into moviemaking, i am sure you can pedict the fate of ur own film!!!
MPK was huge. What made the movie was not Salman and Bhagyashree’s performances but the overall story, songs, execution, even the comic track was pretty funny (for its time). And yet I cannot imagine it being anywhere close with Avinash Wadhwan and Sheeba. Star Power counts for something.
I agree with most except Vivah.I feel Vivah might be an average hit. It’s gonna take a pretty huge initial coz of the Barjatya name. And since it’s a family movie,it might just break even.
If only Guru would be a super-hit:D
Vivah i do not agree, and i am sure people are gonna say Barjatya who? One gotta be in news to be in news.. and Sooraj has lost it. Moreover Shahid and Amrita are too plastic.. anyways how are the songs of Vivah?
promos of vivah aren’t looking too promising or enticing.. only song i heard as part of the promo was “mujhe haq hai”.. and it left me saying mujhe haq hai yeh phillum nahi dekhne ka |-)
and i’m pretty sure i’ll follow thru with that…
@ Striker i think Sooraj is still having a massive hangover of MPK and HAHK… I fail to understand, why dont established directors, or producers who have tons of money, make somethig different? Why give us same shit day-in-day-out
sumeet.. bc they themselves live in this fantasy world where they think their old-wine-new-bottle crap will actually be digested by the audience.. i don’t even think this will be a dvd watch for me.. unless of course, word of mouth publicity says otherwise.
ultimately i’m just looking for a good story with a cast that’s well-suited for it. in the case of MPK, the cast suited the story and the film created stars.. (the music helped too). salman didn’t have much of a precedence before it. this can’t be said in the case of HAHK, where the now-established stars were paired with a good story (and songs) to create a superhit.
I always tend to believe that HAHK was a fluke. What was the story? At what part was the story told.. about 30 mins from the end of close to 4 hours ordeal? What worked for HAHK was the music, the brilliant Madhuri, and people were dieing to see a visually good movie for god knows how many years before HAHK arrived. Should we dare to call it a cultural movie? Apart from showing Punjabi marriage culture( some true some added for mental gratification) there was nada, zilch in the movie. They tried to create something similar with HSSH.. but it bombed.. why? Stale music, the family thingy was over blown.. Ramayan inspired story.. no one wanted to see( this makes me think.. audience doesnt like to watch mythology woven aroung today’s time… case in point the brilliant Kalyug..shashi kapoor’s) it, and there was no Madhuri.
“Why give us same shit day-in-day-out”
Cos there is still a public for it, especially NRI. Yash Raj/Karan Johar keep doing same shit but they have star value in their films, hence works.
You will only see changes in our Industry when the public changes.
@ HG Bhai aise mat bolo.. hum bhi NRI’s hain..:((
I guess my NRI he meant the ones who would like any crapy movie with loads of stars, loads of make up in any scene, loads of designer lehangas/sarees, loads of NY/UK locations, loads of sentiment(which makes others menatl). If all this is there, script never matters
@ Sudha..i was just trying to pull HG’s legs.. I know waht he meant.. Thanks for explaining the meaning.. but those kinda public can be found anywhere, no wonder why KANK has generated faaar more money in India than in anyother part of the world.
guys,
I think that HAHK was a fluke. Definately. But as mentioned, it catered to a family segment which were not getting any ready fodder. Whole families going for a feel-good movie together. A movie that at one level was overboard and absurd and unreal - no real family behaves the way they did. But, it was aimed at the hindi hearland. The allahabads, the kanpurs, the bhopals, etc. It was different from the usual yashraj films showing punjabi marriages. Maybe people identified with the films marriage scenes. However, in my opinion, it didnt deserve the cult status it achieved. Probably salman’s worst role and performance.
Hum saath saath hain was the modern day ramayana. Again, cardboard characters that dont exist in real life. The movie did bomb but it should have sent the message that such crap only sells once. MPKDH - the aweful abhishek-kareina-hritik film was the worst thing to have ever come from the barjatya stable. Also, I feel, it gave the indication that suraj barjatya was more lucky than talented. He tried making a movie that he felt was urban and hip but was totally absurd.I agree with sumeet when he says that suraj barjatya has totally lost it.
astonishing, idiotic & irritating!!!
toooooooooo bad!
if u really can predict future then plz predict yours(& bet its gonna be really bad!)
VIVAH is 1 movie that most of us r really looking forward to & its goin’ 2 be 1 of the BEST movies ever.:)>-
i completely agree with gautam & cabymistake(cmment no. 6)
as for shahid & amrita they r made for each other & r unbeatable as a couple.i luv them!!!
suraj is 1 of the greatest directors & is dam good at choosing the starcast.
lol u guys are really funny.. some1 who said, “mujhe haq hai yeh phillum nahi dekhne ka.”:d Is really jokes… your right this movie is total waste of time. I am a reporter and I have already watched the movie;).. its yawn boring… don’t even use ur money to watch such stupid movie.. but u know ppl over seas might go watch it cuz all they like is nice family stories.. god knows why!!! Its not like they are any family oriented ppl… they are more old minded then ppl in India.. trust me I know cuz I’ve been in US for over 10 years. But I am not one of them lolll…:)>-
Specially this unappealing couple really don’t help the movie much. If they had taken some other actress maybe it would have attracted a bigger audience. Amrita just doesn’t seem to stick to people’s head. She always fails to make an impression. After so many movies she is still a new girl for people, and this is not a good sign. Many actresses who came after her like Calina and Ayesha takia are much more well known by the public compared to the uninteresting Amrita rao. She’s got no personality.
Amrita is sooo god damn annoying to watch.. I hate her voice big time. who the hell is she and where did she come from… tell her to get another life and get out of our faces.. she is soo fake!!
lol Jignya.
On the other hand, such kinda films help retaining the lost art of humour. It inspires a million jokes and tickles our spoof quotient. so, IMO, they should keep coming, but only at one condition- the level of mediocrity should remain the same. :d
And thanks for stating the predictable, about the film I mean. My sincere sympathies with you for tolerating the film.
I would keep my thoughts on the great cast of the film reserved till the film comes. Rest assured, we gonna have a ball here at PFC once it comes out. \:d/
