The Practical Illustrated Media Handbook : Film & Cinematography
At the outset, we should not hesitate to admit that in several regions of our country, the standard of imparting media education is far from being satisfactory. The rush of young people towards the media-print or electronic, has led to the mushroom growth of institutes of journalism and mass communication. Their brochures make big claims and the fee is even bigger. Most of these institutes not only lack the basic infrastructure but also the faculty of teachers with professional background and practical experience. The show limps on with the help of part timers the result is that when the students find a job, they are also surprised to find that they were not told things which they should have been told for smoothly performing the day to day professional work. No wonder that in the large and booming film and television industry of our country, there are very few professionals who went to a media school and yet succeeded.
The media industry is flourishing and growing and so is technology. The industry welcomes newcomers but only those who can prove their worth. The need of the hour is that media schools should turn out professionals, but for that we require teachers with professional experience and expertise, well organized training courses and also text and reference books with updated information.
As a visiting faculty to many media institutions I tried to find out the books available in Indian market with some practical tips ( and not the so called academic books telling the history of Indian cinema ) but I was unfortunate. It is with this perspective in mind that this series of book has been planned and the first volume of the series is published. I do not claim that this book of mine can explain all the intricate details of film making but I am confident that it will take you to the magic world of cinema and gradually you will feel more comfortable with this complicated medium. Even if the book could work as catalytic agent, I shall be happy, because the book has many threads, links and suggested readings.
Whether you are a film student, like to appreciate a film or an old hand in the field this hand book is an essential companion and a comprehensive guide to successful and practical movie production. The book has about 1250 terms carefully selected keeping the Indian film industry in mind and these terms have been explained with the help of 750 Illustrations, photographs, diagrams etc. with the help of the models exclusively done for the book. The 110 page appendix covers academic references, films institutes available in India and all over the world, a very carefully selected suggested readings, some important and useful website and web links, standard forms of film and cinema production and so on.
So, whether you are working on a film script, creating a plot for a movie, planning to make an animated film, making a schedule for a film or planning to join a film production group. Virtually all film and cinematography courses will have elements of practical work. The difficulty for film & cinematography students and new entrants to the industry is that the day to day working language, the customize rolls and specific deployment of skills and special activities and phrases can seem at first daunting and impenetrable.
The practical Illustrated media handbook is an essential guide to understanding, how the film media works and how the professionals in the movie media talk to each other. It makes the media accessible, untangles the jargon and provides you with the knowledge and confidence to participate in practical activities. The definitions given in the book are simple, clear, uncomplicated and easy to understand.
Your response, suggestions and also critical comments are important to me and are most welcome as these will help me with other books of a similar nature I am working on the volumes to follow, they will be on TV and Radio, Print Journalism and PR & Advertising.
The book has been published by pilgrims publishing (website: www.pilgrimsbooks.com) The cost of the 425 A4 size pages book is Rs. 575 /- . The ISBN No. is 81-7769-629-7. My friends Ashish Maurya and Sandeep Chaturvedi have done the excellent photography for this book. You can have more details about the book from the publishers website.

just finished
there will be blood
daniel day-lewis is some actor.
film is propaganda
a two hour long sermon on one of the commandments – greed.
it suffer terribly from lack of symbolism
the victim is a devoted to god man
if they tried to deliver a sermon
could they have not been made it a little subtle at least.
the oil thing. so obvious.
this is pathetic.
this is a product of third rate, stupid fundamentalists.
more surprising is the fact that people are willing to suffer such a sermon.
it is regressive. if someone is in bad shape, is it enough reason to fall back on something he has rejected knowingly. this is cowardice.
=((
Vishrant bhai
I’m intrigued. What was your objection to the film ?
Care to write an iview on it?
Mithun
i write an iview – full article.
don’t ask me for that please
as you can see, i can not right one sentence correctoly.
if i try to right a full article, by the time i will finish it, i will go in depression because of my language skill.
:((
there will be blood
i am giving my points here
- it is not a no brainier. it tries to give a message
- message is, if one does not live a righteous life, deny god, follow greed, one ends up as a miserable murderer.
- what is right for one man, is also right for a society, country. this gives the conclusion that what america is doing in iraqa is wrong.
- suggestion is not to do it. follow a righteous path. path that has been suggested already, and one has ignored it.
- film establishes that what is right is already in front of ones eyes, always has been.
- this path is Christianity and its ten commandments.
- this search for solution in past, is defining characteristics of a fundamentalist.
- a fundamentalist always takes the guidance from past. from scriptures.
- a radical man when in confusion, tries to search for the solution. fundamentalist offers the ready made solution of all problems.
- film suggests that society has gone in a wrong direction. come back, live a righteous life, as scriptures suggest.
- this is regression. the belief that thousand of years old scriputers can answer the question of today.
- when daniel cries for his sin in church. he was asked to repeat that he has abondened his child. it is shown that he repeat these words without believing them. he has not accepted that he has abounded his child. he is saying so that his project can progress. his confession for sin is fake.
in the climax when priest boy says that god is superstition. we are supposed to believe that he is faking it. as daniel did.
this way god and all that has been shown in the film about church is still right.
- the priest boy represent the makers of the film. this is obvious.
- boy is killed by the hand of daneil symbolizing, greed, and american foreign policy. suggesting this is what is being done to religion.
- film is proposing the righteous way, shown in past.
i disagree with that. if problem is of today. the search for the solution should be done now. nothing from the past can help. regression is not the way.

all the above could be pure bakwas
i may be seeing something which is not there in the first place.

I don’t think we should hijack this thread for a discussion but would love to talk to you more bout it. So if you could just write what you have written in your comments in an iview we can take it further from there.
Vishrant
I came to very different conclusions.
For me the movie ridiculed religion & its priests, esp christianity the biggest monster of them all.
Righteousness & Religion are completely different things. And this film does not try to prove that this path or that path is right. Infact the film doesnt preach about anything. Its an observation on the effect of greed & religion on mankind.
I agree that OIL is a symbolism for the war in IRAQ. But then he adapted the film from a book called OIL.
What I liked & disliked about the film is infact the same thing. That its a pointless film. Ofcourse everyone will have their own interpretations, like yours & mine.
But I think you got the religion being the right path completely wrong. The ending was great. It was a victory of the lesser evil – greed. Over bigger evil- religion, disguised as something good. Which makes it so sinister. Daniel’s greed was honest. He doesn’t hide it.
Mainak
your interpretion is valid.
more layered in comparison to mine
i took greed and religion at there face value.

“this is regression. the belief that thousand of years old scriputers can answer the question of today”.
Man u are some hypocrite. On one hand u are extolling the virtues of Ramayana & here ur blasting the christian scriptures. Vishrant Bhai Ram Ram …
ram ram satish bhai
i am not blasting Christian scriptures
but modesty aside, i don’t agree with the version of christianity depicted in there will be blood.
it is same
i am against the wrong interpretation of ramayan
and as much as i am against the wrong interpretation of bible
wrong – according to me
i am not saying that my interpretation is ultimate.
i also will object
to the wrong interpretation of lao tzu
of zen
of sufi
:-@
Vishrant…
Is there a right interpretation?
Mainak
“is there a right interpretation?”
i have no idea
