Press Screening of Bheja Fry in SF + Ignorant Post
Tomorrow is the press screening of Bheja Fry. In case you are press or on the SAAFA ratings panel or friend or enemy of Vivek Kumar or on PFC , you are invited. I have limited passes. Please let me know ASAP—More details below
Folks,
Invite to the press screening of “Bheja Fry” tomorrow i.e. Thursday May 17th at 8.45pm at Century 10 Berryessa, in North San Jose.
See how a low budget film, with realy no stars but solid actors (Rajat Kapoor, Ranvir Shorey, former NY resident Vinay Pathak), is setting ablaze the box office in Mumbai and breaking every myth
- Myth # 1- You need stars to make a film successful- BHEJA FRY has none.
- Myth # 2 - You need to shoot in foreign locations to make a film successful - BHEJA FRY as the name implies as none of that
- Myth # 3- These kinds of films are appreciated, but not seen on theater…..wrong again, this “no name, no star film” has already raked in a NET PROFIT (not gross box office that is meaningless after taing into account the marketing dollars spent) of Rs 10 crores and counting.
NOW RELEASING IN THE US

Clearly indicating the total ignorance of the BUSINESS of film by the writer. While I have not seen the film and will make no comments on it’s merit or lack thereof, will say that when he says a film made $68K and is a flop, he has no idea what he is talking about.
A film is a hit or a flop after taking into account the costs to make it. I can bet you, without even going into the details, that these “dismal $68K” numbers will very quickly recover the money spent on Metro and some, i.e. put it in the black.
This he compares with the projected $13million of Namesake, without taking into account the thousands and millions of dollars spent on “marketing” it in the first place. All those fancy, shmancy ads you are seeing on your local television channel ain’t coming free honey!!! So if you spend $14 mill and make $13 mill and if you spend $ 10K and make $68K, you don’t really need my CPA degree to figure out the “dismal numbers.”
Sincerely,
Vivek “now will the writers please start to do some research before writing” Kumar

Thanks for the numbers Vivek… why can’t the sites explain on what basis they are calling the movies a hit or a flop… ?
vivek,
what is Metro’s budget? Before claiming hit or flop, it is basic to compare earnings with entire budget and I dont see that in Pais or your article.
Hi Jwalant,
Although not in the film business directly I can probably estimate Metro’s budget, having gotten involved with one film here and one in India.
Cost of actors -Rs 5 to 7 crores …again I can bet, they all reduced their budget substantially for Anurag Basu, so it may well be a back end deal of upfront Rs 1-3 crores and remainder on upside potential.
Shot in the city so crew and spot boys have to be paid daily and cost of the studios and equipment is perhaps 1.5 crors.
Post and marketing. Again have not seen the film, but chances are they appointed folks as media partners, and Anuraag had a prior hit product with gangster, so that makes him get the upper hand in negotiation. Then take into account the amount spent on the number of prints. I am sure the theaters gave him a profit sharing deal, so no upfront cost there (as opposed to four walling a theater and the related costs) and I am guestimating the total cost of the film to be
Rs 5 to Rs 7 crore. Using the rate of exchange as prevalent at this point in time a range from $123,152.71 to $172,413.79
Based on that premise JUST a US OPENING of $68K , should be almost 1/2 way to paying the bills. Then include the rights from dvd and Netflix/Blockbuster and cable TV and you are home and some….
Vivek - I think you are missing a zero. Rs. 1 crore is about USD 245,000. So, 5 crores is north of a million dollars.
You are right Shripriya - Also just found out the actual budget. It is 4.5 crore, so just short of a million dollars to make and get it out in the theater.
Also here is the production budget of Namesake. $ 9.5 million US

Not sure if it includes the non US marketing costs. Which I anticipate to be a couple of mill at least.
Vivek
a few months back i have had a similar discussion…. and what i understood was that to distribute a couple of prints in UK costs more than
