PROJEKT iVIEW : Gulzar’s lyrics - Old Wine in New Bottle

iVIEW AUTHOR:
Dipankar Giri (Bombay, India)

email: dipankar.giri [at] gmail.com

So Gulzar fans….. you are free to screw me for the title… but Gulzar sahab has repeated his lyrics … genuinely and in a romantic way…… but as a bottle of wine gives nasha… the hangover of his song never ends let’s the sip one by one of the words/phrases he used frequently in his songs..…..

dhoop/chaon

This metaphor is told beautifully in a cinematic way…take these lines from Maachisjahan teri edi se dhoop uda karti thi….suna hai us chaukhat pe ab shaam raha karti hai……

and the lines from Pinjar, maar maar ke ediyan dhoop udaawenge..chal peepal ki chaon me gidda daalenge..

There is a line in the song. chaiyaa chaiyaa… main uske ruup kaa saudaaii vo dhuup chhaanv saa harjaai n the famous song of kabuliwaala goes like… ganga aaye kahan se ganga jaaye kaha re..lahraaye paani me jaise dhoop chao re

The song from Rockford…

mere paon ke tale ki ye jameen chal rahi hai…. kahi dhoop thandi thandi kahin chaon jal rahi hai

from fizaa.. aa dhoop malu main teri aankho me…

from Saathiyapeeli dhoop pahen ke tum baag me mat jaana.

and the other from Aandhi….. jaado ki narm dhoop aur aangan me letkar …..

Din/raat

A typical way of the maestro to depict the emptiness… like this line of the song.. ek akela is saher me from the film “Gharonda” I think were inspired by William blake…

din khaali khali bartan hai aur raat hai andha kuan..

and the other from the movie Sitaara.. raat kat jaayegi to kaha din bitaayenge..baajre ke kheto me kaue udaayenge….

this brilliant song from “lekin“..

din raat ke dono pahiye kuch dhool udakar chale gaye…

these lines from the film “parichay

din ne haath thaam kar idhar bula liyaa raat ne ishaare se udhar bula liya..

n the lines from “Omkara

o saathi re din doobe na…aa chal din ko roke…dhoop ke peeche daude…chaao choo le…

n one from “Aandhi

Din dooba nahi raat doobi nahi..jaane kaisa hai safar..

from saathiya.. din bhi na doobe..raat na aaye..shaam kabhi na dhale..

from paheli.. doobta hai din to sham ko saaye udte hai teri yaadein liye

from khushboo

doobi doobi aankho me sapno ke saaye, raat bhar apne hai din me paraaye

and

meelo se din chod aaye..saalo se raat leke chale…of sili hawa choo gayi..

Ghar

Gulzaar sahab has left was born in Dina Pakistan… and left his home far before but the memories never been washed away…gulzar sab’s urdu n his poetry never took him away from his home…n that’s y he writes in maachis

paani paani in pahado ki dhalaano se gujar jaana dhua dhua kuch waadiyan bhi aayengi gujar jaana ek gaon aayega mera ghar aayega…jaa mere ghar jaa…..

and in his beautiful film lekin…. saawan aayo ghar le jaiyo.

feel the fragrence of soil from the movie sitaara…… mere ghar ke aangan me chotaa sa jhoola hai ..soondhi sondhi mitti hogi lepa hua chulha hai…

Mr. Shyam Benegal has made an ultimate movie..Mammo… and it has a wonderful song titled… ye faasle teri galiyo ke humse tay na hue hazaar baar ruke hum hazaar baar chale.. written by obviously Gulzar sahab… see farida jalaal’s performance in the movie… now when there is sangam of urdu ,Pakistan n home..how can he miss his home…so he writes in the song….

ye kaisi sarhadein uljhi hui hai pairo me.hum apne ghar ki taraf uth ke baar baar chale…

Naina

I think he loves the word.. more than “ankh” aur “nain”

See the masoom song…. do naina ek kahaani thoda sa baadal thoda sa paani aur ek kahaani.

from omkara - jag jaa ri gudiyaa..meesri ki pudiya..meethe lage do naina. and naino ki mat suniyo re nayanaa thag lenge..

the song ………….do naino me aansoo bhare hai..nindiya kaise samaaye

another song from ashoka he writes…

roshni se bhare bhare naina tere..sapno se bhar bhare naina tere

Chaand

Gulzar sahab’s favourite pastime “chaand” is used frequently in his writings…in fact..he has published a book..”raat chaand aur main…” He is so affectionate with the word that it hailed across his entire carreer…from his first song “mora gora rang lai le to recently released movies Omkara and Guru….

The song “mora gora rang laile le.” has a stanza which goes like.. badli hataake chanda chupke se jhaanke chandaa…. and the lines of the song “bol guru” from Guru……. load shedding me chaand jalaaye

In Omkara… the item song starts as.. main chaand nigal gayi from namak ishq ka

remember the satya song…. doriyo se baandh baandh kar raat bhar chaand todna..ye mujhe kya ho gaya

the song dhua dhua fromn Bunty aur bubblychaand se hokar sadak jaati hai..

Another song goes like …..kabhi chaand ki tearh chamki..atthanni si ye jindagi

Again the movie lekin…. it has another song… main ek sadi se baithi hoo is raah se koi gujra nahi….kuch chaand ke rath to gujre the par chaand se koi gujra nahi

and the other is from my favorite movie “Ijaazat” this song has got national award for lyrics…

ek sau solah chaand ki raatei ek tumhare kandhe ka til..from mera kuch kuch samaan

Waqt /lamha-

The memories which were left behind ..it seems that he wants to hold them again… and so the “waqt” n “lamha..”

The song “haath chhute bhi to rishte nahi chhuta karte..waqt ki shakh se lamhe nahi toota karte” from pinjar.. it’s something like the song… aane waala pal from Golmaal…. ek baar waqt se lamha gira kahin…wahan daastan mili..lamha kahi nahi…

Of all the repetition….this man will always be a genius and will ever be a legend to Indian cinema.. he has written some wonderful lines which were very rare and never repeated them.. will try to wrap in my next post…

You got me hooked..its not old wine but vintage one that matures with age..Gulzar Saab is indeed a maestro..Now looking forward to your post of fresh wine–limited edition.Excellent!

har kavi ke kuch priya shabd hote hai aur unse judi images hoti hain.gulzar chand ka barhan istemaal karte hain,,,har baar chand ek naaaya mayne deta hai.
nidaa fazzli bhi kaai ghazalon ko geet ka roop de chuke hain.

  3. Omprakash Seresta on July 25th, 2007 9:54 pm

A correction: jaado ki naram dhoop aur… is from Mausam and not Aandhi

Also the correlation is very ambiguous as the writer tries to relate words in different song. A quick inspection shows that even the word in most of the songs in each category has a different context.

Gulzar’s lyrics heavily draws from the context of the protagonists projected on Gulzar space to give different meanings. So I dont think the title related to old wine is apt in this case.

i agree with ajay ji & Omprakash, every writers has some fav. words and they used to use these words in different context and meaning. if meaning of whole sentence is exact matching with other one then u can say that Gulzar sahab has repeated his lyrics. Gulzar saab uses “paani” word in his many songs but always in different contexts so only due to one word “paani” we can’t say he is repetitive.

Hey Dipankar, what a sexy post man!! hav always felt the same but the way u hav put together….putting the songs n all, its simply amazing.
after reading gulzar’s raat, chand aur main n few other poetry collection…all i could remember was lamas, lamas, lamas…bcz the word has been repeated so many times. n there r so many words like that.

also, one formula that u can figure out in many of his songs is combining the tangible and d intangible. thats very repetitive.
the man is great,no doubt abt that. but these facts r also true.

I have always liked the style adopted by Gulzar..a very old song from Meena Kumaris last film with him with vinod Khanna i saw recently..’mere apne’ and the song was ‘roz akeli aaye roz akeli jaaye chand katora liye bhikaran raat’..beautiful!

Dipankar: you put a very hard work in searching repetition of words in film songs penned by Gulzar Saab. I do feel that WORDS in film songs are like ALPHABETS in common writing. Unlike literature based poets, a poet involved in film songs has limitations of situations and situataions are not many in the films and unlike literature based poets, film song’s poets have to write more songs.
Because you are in to this searching then perhaps you may find a difference between songs written by Gulzar Saab for his own films and songs he has written for films made by others and then songs he has written for RDB and for other composers.
and then one other important point, when he writes poetry, which he is not writing for films, then we have to see whats the pattern there.
for example: [Raat bhar sard hawa chaltee rahee
    raat bhar humne alav tapa.........
raat bhar jo bhee mila ugate badan par humko
kat ke Daal diya jalate alaav mein use
raat bhar phukon se har lau ko jagaye rakha
aur do jismo ke indhan ko jalaye rakha
rat bhar bujhate huye rishte ko tapa humne.]

rat, rishta, ankhein, jism, saukhee nazmein, shakhein, khat etc words will be there in this non filmi song, but mood is also same as in his film songs?

Mood can be searched in his songs he has written for his own films. songs connected with Winter, Sunny morning, mountains, mist, frost, dew drops on leaves, wet grass, dry leaves, clouds will be there.

and his songs in Namkeen, phir se aaiyo badara bidesia, tere pankhon pe moti jarungee,
its lone song in his collection.

Why only repetition of words in songs, you may find resembling scenes in his films which have connection to old films, for example, Izaajat starts where Kora Kaghaj ends, but same scene taken by Gulzar saab has his own touch.

Creativity often meets somewhere with past work but still it comes in new flavour.

I, though wait for Pavan Jha’s special comment on this post.
hope he reads it and comment.

    hard effort Dipankar.

@ RK, aapne “mukh ki baat cheen le” :):)

  9. Omprakash Seresta on July 26th, 2007 12:34 pm

A genuine charge against Gulzar will be in film making. Some of his movies are remakes like Mere Apne is a remake of bengali film “Aponjan” (directed by Tapan Sinha, I guess), Ijazzat is heavily inspired (not a remake) with some scenes lifted directly from bengali film “Jotu griha” (of Uttam Kumar), Maachis had a scene which is a close replica from Drohkaal. Parichay is a remake of a bengali film (I cant remember the name), which in itself is inspired of sound of music or one can say it is adapted directly from Sound of music. Angoor is a scene by scene remake of a bengali film (Bhranti Bilas), which was an adaptation of “comedy of errors”.

    =Omprakash Seresta,
Gulzaar saab been assistant to Bimal Roy and had among his colleagues Hrishida, Mukul Dutt et al. Could it be that influence working subconciously while choosing subjects..During sixties and seventies Hindi Film Industry was ruled by Bengalis..Then came action era and Punjabis took over..From nineties it was mix n match..And now its anybody n everybody..true secular and democratic era opening up..what u say?

  11. Omprakash Seresta on July 26th, 2007 2:31 pm

@krysh-Ha ha. :d That’s an interesting thought. But I think bollywood is still in punjabi era (but to a lesser extent, I guess the era is coming to end :d) of lavish family dramas associated with NRI or non-NRI films (I think this should be the term used instead of saying indian centric subject and NRI-driven subject)

Being a fan of Gulzarsaab’s work, it was good to read your post, and I surely appreciate the effort you put in there, but like many others have said, every song of his has such novelty of idea and expression that one can never help being amazed by his genius. As I always say, there’s a Gulzar song to complement every situation in life. I for one would never tire of listening to his poetry :)

oh rk..u recalled me of “udaas paani”

bas ek hi sur ek hi lay me
dekh dekh kaise barasa raha hai udaas paani
    fuhaar ke malmali dupatte se
    tamaam mausam ris raha hai…

    and
wo kya mausam ka jhonka tha jo deewar per lgi tasveer tirchi kar gaya tha hai..

    dupahre aisi lagti hai jaise
bina mohro ke khali khane rakhe hai
na koi khelne waala na koi chaal chaltaa hai

c these lines of the ….

    mushkil hai aakash par chalnaa
    taare paaon me chubhte hai

or line from the song phir wahi raat hai
kaanch ke khwaab hai ..aankho me chubh jaayenge..

    @ omprakash..didn’t know that angoor was a remake of bharanti’r bilas…oh my god..anyway thanx ….
@ ajay ji nida fazli ke baare me agle post me baat kerna chahunga..in fact mujh elag raha tha unka jiqr kam hua hai…

    Dipankar,

Finally I got to read your post.. though it shows a lot of hard work that you put in, but as a hardcore gulzar fan I must say I am disappointed.. I am in complete agreement with the title of the post but the examples are not appropriate and not given serious thoughts to the extent this theme deserve..

Sorry Dipankar, I was not in a mood to write this post, but since you asked, I have to tell what I observed.. The post is like a Raj Kumar Santoshi film, where in spite of putting a hard effort from the bottom of heart, falls short of expectation.. because in some spells you are brilliant but at some places you are just too careless and does not justify your passion for the theme you’ve chosen..

    -*-
First of all let me correct a few lyrical pieces.. If the central theme of the post is lyrics, then you should be very careful about quoting exact lyrics.. not even a her-pher of one or two words..

“from fizaa.. aa dhoop malu main teri aankho me

  16. Pavan Jha on September 1st, 2007 3:03 pm

    “and the other from Aandhi

  17. dipankar on December 19th, 2007 5:23 am

@ Pavan…i was waiting for ur comment n i got to read it today only…after three months but at last got it…thanx for this…one thing I want to clear that I just found the lyrics so similar that i couldnot stop myself to write..I should have attached a tagline that the songs were used in different context…This post is not to defame him..I just observed an intresting repetition…
