Suraj-
Its no surprise that you decided to watch PM since its become a hit and has been in the news etc.But I’m wondering what made you go with such a lot of expectation from the movie.The movie had only one motive- establish Prithviraj as a saleable action hero & in that endeavour the director Diphan has been successful.the next film from Prithviraj-Robinhood again has been a disappointment.
Check out his last year releases- Thirakatha and Thalappavu to regain your confidence in Prithvi ( in case you haven’t yet seen them ). And yes do watch Pazhassi Raja- its something that will give you the confidence in Malayalam cinema once again.
@SethuMadhavan,
The rushes were really good, specially the scene between NeduMudi Venu and PrithviRaj wherein NeduMudi Venu says Prithvi to go back to the institution. Such scenes were constantly shown on TV, this really motivated me for this movie.
Also I am of the opinion that Prithvi Raaj used to select his movie(s) based on the story/concept rather his screen time like he did in Classmates, Thirakatha and Thalapaavu, this also contributes to the expectation in me to watch this flick!
It was not that there was lot of expectation. It was the way the movie was made, i m surprised to see the director claiming the success of the movie with the way he narrated the script. It was like watching Mithun Chakraborty 90’s movie. I m sure this is one of cycle in Malayalam cinema but i never expected it to be this much worse
would prefer not to see this even if i am paid for it…This is a stupid movie… golden era will not come again… the taste of audiences have changed.. Nowadays, no one is ready patiently flow with the content, every youngster seeks Malayalam films to ape Tamil or Telugu blockbusters… and finally, its nonsensical films that emerge out of such business ventures…
Recently, I was in trivandrum for a screening of ‘Madhyavenal’.. a good film, which had brilliant performances by Manoj K Jayan and Shwetha Menon.. not even a single college going student was there .. We used to bunk classes to see such movies, that was the passion for good cinema amongst a large section of audience …
Ram- what you’ve stated is sad but true.Movies like Madhyavenal,Adayalangal,Gulmohar etc struggle to get a release even though Kerala Govt.itself has a few theatres in the state.Nowadays even if a Mohanlal does a Paradesi or an Akashagopuram where is the public for it?
Today’s college going generation in Kerala isnt used to the movies that we got to see & thats the cause for this apathy.
there was an older generation when you were young(you still look so)..who made movies which was meaningful and could relate to the youth in particular. It is an universal phenomenon. Hollywood itself is heading towards masalamovies.com ..the process has reversed. earlier it was something like..script-director-producer-fame/money and now it is fame/money-producer-director-script. It is bound to happen as more people would like fame/money rather than to write a script.
@Chandan,
Well said, let’s hope it acts as a cycle and the good old days repeat.
@SethuMadhavan,
Agree Gulmohar was a very good movie by Jayaraj. I loved it! But somewhere I feel earlier movies(late 80’s – early 90’s) used to have a saleable aspect i.e. providing entertainment via comedy, songs, dialogues but at the same time keeping the script tight bound! If anyone tries it even now, it might get worked! One never know
Hey!Chandan even I hope that its just a cycle and the good days are back soon.And yes good observation- its not that I’ve grown old
– just that while I was in school & even in college the movies churning out were a lot better.
waiting for the next “padmarajan”. He was undoubtedly a world class director with great sensibilties. Only a few good films like classmates, arabikatha, thanmatra were released in the last couple of years. Rest all have been jerk offs of “twenty 20″ standards!! God save Malayalam Cinema!
@Siva,
I agree with you.
But the fact is there is a dearth in literature among the current filmmakers. Padmarajan Sir was an institution for literature. His movies were simple, yet detailed with varied emotions at the same time providing the scope for entertainment. Very difficult even to dream someone coming atleast 1% near to him.
