Pyar Ka Side Effect (2006)

A 30+ man in a relationship afraid to commit to the relationship and then his girl friend proposes to him. He has to say yes and what follows is the hilarious journey to marriage. “Pyar ka Side Effect (PKSE) takes you on a journey through the trials and tribulation from love to marriage. It is surprisingly good movie. There may be some side effects but on the whole it good entertainment.Rahul Bose plays Sidhartha or Sid who is a 30+ DJ in love with Trisha played by Mallika Sherawat, an event organizer. Right in the middle of a cricket match, which India is winning, Trisha proposes. Sid is caught off guard and has no choice but to accept. The acceptance was just the start. Next comes the shopping for ring, house accessories etc and the worst, meeting the parents and handling the ex. The rest of the movie is about how Sid goes through the whole circus with a predictable end.

Its said that the journey is more important then the destination. The movie just proves the point. The climax has to be predictable. I mean its not a tragedy. Its a love story ad they have to meet. But what happens in between is fun and I mean real fun. Looking at the recent comedies, not many have made me laugh. They sure made me smile but not laugh. Also it is certainly not of the type of leaving your brain at home and then watching the movie. The recent “Golmaal” was of that kind. Its not intelligent comedy either. Its fun and makes you think a little, not much just a little.

Sample this on the discussion about Super heroes not getting married

Superman ki shadi nahi hui hai, Batman ki shadi nahi hui hai. Shakti-man ki bhi shadi nahi hui hai. Woh toh saala Indian hai. uski toh maa paka deti hogi usko

The story can be described in one line. The story of a man afraid to commit/marriage to a girl he likes to spend his life with. The story is told from Sid’s perspective with Sid talking to the camera and doubling as a Sutradhar. Rahul Bose is Sid. Rahul Bose’s personality is that of a urban youth and he does not have any problem slipping into the role effortlessly. Looking at his earlier movies, his Hindi has improved quite a lot. In terms of acting, this role looks an extension of his “Jhankar Beats” role.

The surprise here is Mallika Sherawat. She matches Rahul in every step. She plays the emotional and undecided Trisha. She is not using her body here. I haven’t seen many movies of Mallika, just the streamy “Murder” and the pathetic “Kis kis ki Kismat”. But here she is good if not best. She still has a long way to go but then Rahul and Mallika form a unusually good pair.

The supporting casts actually support the movie much better. Ranvir Shorey is Nanoo, Sid’s eccentric roomy who does not change his underwear for days. His only girlfriend leaves him for his laziness. Taraana Raja is Shalini, Sid’s everything knowing sister and Aamir Bashir is Kapil, her husband. There is Jas Arora as Mallika’s ex and Suchitra Pillai as Anjali, Mallika’s friend.

Mallika’s exposure part is taken over by Sophiya Choudhary who plays Tania or Baby Girl Volume 3, an item girl in music videos. She is the oomph factor in PKSE.

PKSE is just above two hours with some songs but not so good. Thankfully there are no running around trees song neither there are any in foreign locales. The first hour breezes through while the second hour slows down. After Sid’s break up, things take expected turns with the entry of Baby Girl volume 3 and Sid trying to handle breakup.

Director Saket Chaudhary keep the story tight most of the part and almost manages to prevent it from becoming a slapstick.

PKSE is good, of course in parts but over all it’s a good entertainment. At least it touches the problem many men face. Poor us!

Rating: 7/10

This was my first hindi-speaking Rahul Bose movie. This guy has a long way to go as far as Hindi is concerned. He’s better off speaking in English. Whenever he spoke Hindi, it kind of grated me. And yes, agree, Mallika is surprisingly good here. Her acting looked pretty cool and effortless. Really surprising.
And dude - ‘Will you be my bad boy?’ song sucked big time. Literally fell of the chair listening to that. :d

You could have seen his older movies. His hindi was worse.

“Will you be by bad boy” was a parody on today’s remixes. Well! That’s what my guess is on the basis on the way it is shot.
