Quantum of Solace(2008)

It is unusual that a James Bond film is released in India before it is released in USA. The 22nd James Bond film does not offer as one may expect after watching “Casino Royale”. “Quantum of Solace” which is like a sequel to “Casino Royale” falls short of expectations.

The film opens with the sound track “Another Way to die” and later followed by a breathtaking Car chase, after the car chase Bond and M interrogate White regarding the organization called “Quantum”. White in reply says that “The first thing you should know about us is that, we have people everywhere.” M’s bodyguard Mitchell turns traitor and shoots at the interrogators allowing White to escape.

Bond eventually kills Mitchell filled with impressive action scenes. The death of Mitchell leads Bond to meet Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric) and Camille (Olga Kurylenko). Dominic Greene a member of the Quantum organization who intends to take control over the Water in Bolivia.

The peculiar about “Quantum of Solace” is that it a sequel to “Casino Royale” and James Bond is here to take vengeance for the death of Vesper Lynd(Eva Green). There is no need for the inclusion of the character ‘Ren'© Mathis ‘. James Bond travels many countries like Italy, Austria, Haiti, Bolivia, and Egypt which I felt like unnecessary ostentation.

Daniel Craig was again excellent as James Bond. The grunge and ruthless looks of him are amazing and he takes forward his acting skills from “Casino Royale” and as always Judi Dench gives very good performance which shares some emotional feelings with the James Bond. “Olga Kurylenko” does a neat job and if I am not wrong she is the first erstwhile U.S.S.R girl to play this role and the first Bond girl who was not allowed to sleep with James Bond.

The screenplay of the film is just average but it doesn’t get noticed due to some great performences. The plot of the film looks good on the paper but the execution is ordinary and drags itself into unnecessary issues.I really don’t understand why the director is exxagerating the plot which is really unintresting.

I would remember Quantum of Solace for just one reason and that would be the action sequences. The opening car chase, the chase of Craig Mitchell, the fight in a hotel room, the aeroplane scene and the desert scene. In you are a hardcore James Bond fan the breathtaking action sequences will make you feel exited.

The only saving grace of “Quantum of Solace” is the action sequences which are terrific.”Quantum of Solace” should be watched without any expectations then you might not be disappointed.

somehow james bond movies r becoming more and more human, and less and less superhero stuff. he is losing his sheen. wat is a bond without the gadgets and the babes. sadly enuf, the movie and the character have to be seen separately. as a movie its good, but as a james-bond-movie [considering characteristic james bond material] its drab :(
from when i have seen road to perdition [2005/06], i just cant digest daniel craig as james bond; i still prefer sean connery and pierce brosnan.

Abbe Shekhar, I totally agree with you!!!!!
I just found Pierce Brosnan too smug, too over-cool.
Daniel Craig my man, and Casino Royale is the only Bond film I have ever truly loved.

I loved Bond films because somehow they were entertaining. Since Craig, face has changed. He is surely good Bond but I loved Moore, Connery even Brosnan stuff because it was nonsense! Anyway, Craig is good in Quantum of Solace but I still I don’t rate Casino Royale as Best Bond Film. But change can be nice!

  10. Quantum of solace may not satisfy the Bond movie lovers like me, because the feel of it is more like a ‘action movie’ than a ‘Bond movie’. By action movie i mean Die Hard and Bourne series, where the protagonist is always on the run and every stage he has to kill someone to survive. Whereas, in Bond movies expectation are more than action- exotic locales, cars, gizmos, girls, amazing stunts, glamour and to top it all ’style’. I sincerely don’t feel Craig scores low in the style quotient, but that the script of QoC is not good enough to be a Bond movie. Craig looked like Bruce Willis did in Die hard. I mean, bond doesn’t even get to sleep with the bond girl ….lol.
The villain though looks sinister enough, is not that impactful.
Casino Royale was way better than QoC in terms of script, & cinematography, dialogue & style.

This was by far one of the worst James Bond films I have seen. When one goes to see a Bond film one expects the witty lines, the slick action, and the rest of the cliched stuff that goes with 007, this was about as bland and boring as it could get.
The plot based on politics and water could have been so smart and generated so much more of an impact towards the end, but by the time it’s the end, Im just glad it’s over.
The film really doesn’t pick up at all, the action sequences are like fillers in a wandering script and the last one esp with fire in the desert is just too crassly executed.
Heck I would have been happy if he just said the shaken not stirred line again, it was that boring a film. Daniel Craig keeps brooding over his lost love throughout and therefore there is just something dead and missing. No sex, no punch, no smarts, NOTHING.!
