Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Review and all that hoopla…

Taran Adarshji published Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi here and then it was removed… not sure how, why, what, kyon, haila etc. etc…

It seems PhoenixNu had already read it and emailed it to us.

For starters, the Press screening of RNBDJ is on Friday and so a very secretive screening must have been held for a select few, Adarshji being one of them.

But overall, the review praises the movie, performances and Aditya Chopra. It seems Aditya has made a movie that reminds us of his deftly directed Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

To point out a few things in Adarshji’s review for all those very inquisitive…

  1. Adarsh-ji gives the movie 5 stars out of 5
  2. Since Adarsh-ji cannot digest his daily meals without using “Lets clarify”, “On the whole”, and “For all those out there” (to name a select few)… here too, he goes with…

    Lets clarify a few things:
    * This is not a film based on a dancing competition as speculated by the media
    * Shahrukh Khan is not seen in a double role

  3. Clarification duly noted Adarsh-ji.

  4. The king of clich'© further adds

The film has soul and will leave you spellbound, panting and breathing for more as you leave the cinema hall. The repeat value is tremendous with many sterling moments of high emotions and drama.

  5. For each good film in Adarsh-ji’s books we are supposed to go dumb (I mean mute here)

The story is very simple yet the treatment is what will leave the viewer speechless. Surinder (SRK) is a simple, fun loving man in his middle age. He works at a powerplant and goes through many daily routines and rituals. A today’s man, he cooks, cleans, washes, irons all by himself. Unlucky in love – he never quibs and leaves everyone with a smile with his humourous sense of geekiness. Oneday, a young lady walks into his life – Taani (the stunning yet cute Anoushka Sharma) who is the exact opposite of Surinder. This vivacious, flamboyant, bindass girl immediately brings a smile to Surinder’s face, but he fears to tell her how he feels.

  6. And sometimes Adarsh-ji forgets what he wrote in the same review, cause he contradicts himself in the very review…

…the audience is treated to dancing competitions, sum wrestling and a stunningly choreographed Tribute song on yesteryear stars Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna & Rishi Kapoor with guest appearances by 5 stunning bollywood actresses. SRK displays like no other that he is the King of all tribute songs!

  7. Aditya Chopra gets a pat on the back from Adarsh-ji…

The screenplay and story never let you down. The pace is perfect and the treatment to what is a simple story is crucially superb. Hats off Aditya Chopra for a sterling comeback

  8. So does Shah Rukh Khan and newcomer Anoushka Sharma along with Vinay Pathak…

Performance wise, Vinay Pathak will sweep all the supporting actor awards next year with a sterling effort in grooming Surinder into Raj.

Anoushka Sharma could not have asked for a better debuting platform! Understatingly beautiful, she has excellent dialogue delivery and tremendous appeal for youngsters across India. Cheekly innocent, her comic timing and dancing capability will leave a memory in your minds as you leave the theatre. She will bag all the major debutant awards.

What can one say about SRK that has not been said in the past? His ability to carry Yashraj’s problems singlehandedly is well noted, but this is his biggest moment where he rekindles the energy and flamboyancy of old and delivers what can only be described as his greatest performance ever. A challenging role – nearly a double role, it would be difficult to imagine any other actor essaying the diversity so effortlessly. In a word – UNFORGETTABLE! The way he emotes, the way he dances in his impish style, the way he smiles, his accent – everything is so unblemished and infectious that his legion of female fans will fall in love with him for the upteenth time.

The review has since been pulled down. Perhaps it was too early. Perhaps something else.

But Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, seems to be a winner in Adarsh-ji’s books. Hopefully it is true, for I’m all set for Friday (considering Biwi-jee is the biggest fan of SRK in this house and I better be set for watching it first day first show)

Lee- while what you say maybe true that this is not an original review by Taran Adarsh, let me tell you that Taran does use a 5 star rating system in his reviews.Since you claim to know his style of functioning so well, I am surprised as to how you can say so without even being aware.Check out any of his reviews on Indiafm.com & then you’ll know for yourself!!!

  24. @ Tanul

One does not expect anything from TA, but on what grounds would u expect our Khalid Miya to rubbish a movie like Maqbool. This when Khalid Miya is supposed to be one of the more “intelligent” reviewers around. TA is bad, but he never claims he is intellectual, he is open about his preferences. BTW he gave a 4 star to Vivah also.

But what do u say of supposedly intelligent critics like KM, giving a 2 star rating to Maqbool and a 5 star rating to K3G. That was the time i lost all respect for Khalid Miya’s rantings.

@Ratnakar: Yea, we all know about Adarsh-ji’s ‘preferences’, no middle path there for sure. What sometimes irritates me is that indiafm is one of the msot read site, which doesn’t go down well with me. As far as KM is concerned, I haven’t read him much recently. I knew he gave K3G a 5 stars, but had no clue about the shocker 2 stars to Maqbool. But, you know it sometimes becomes quite difficult to analyse critics, if, you try picking up on their reviews of movies in isolation, because it could be an odd case. Case in point being Rangan going all mushy over Drona. But, yea, having said that, a good critic shpuld be fairly consistent, which KM has been accused of in recent times. He reserves special repertoire for a bad Kashyap or Verma film. Check KM’s review of Aag, it is hilarious.

@Sethu: I know that man! Also, have you noticed the new trend in his writing style. He would begun somewhere along the lines of… ‘This is a masala flick, the makers never promised new wave cinema’ and his bullcrap would begin..to this he would sum up by something..or would somewhere in between ‘Ignore, all the pseudo, intellectual people. This is entertainment’ or some shit…And the worst part is, when I was in std. 7 or 8,I used to dilligently follow this TA’s reviews on etc, what a chutiya I was. Kunal Kohli also used to by favorite critic(he used to review on Zee or something, Chalo/Hello cinema or some such shit). Saala, meri bachpan ki maa behen ke kardi dono ‘critics’ ne!!

  30. Ratnakar-

I think Khalid Miyan is a very special specimen.Forget his ratings- I just hate the way he tends to literally tear apart a writer, director or an actor.Even people like Raja Sen or a Rajeev Masand are very critical but they dont atleast take it as a personal grudge.Whereas Khalid Miyan goes extremely harsh in trashing something.

With TA its always been different, he has always tried more to look at a movie from the trade angle & has never tried to portray himself as an intelligent serious movie reviewer.

During my days in college ( U.G ) I used to read Khalid’s reviews and wonder if he makes movies one day lets see how he fares & the results are here to see.I personally havent liked any of his movies.Especially considering the way he goes overboard in his reviews, there’s nothing to write about his movies.

Reminds me of a dialogue of Raaj Kumar

“jaani jinke ghar sheeshe ke hote hain, woh doosron ke ghar pe pathar nahin fenka karte”

I think there should be a rating agency that shud audit the rating skills of these reviewers whio have attained a cult status. Nikhat Kazmi gave 3 and a half star recently to a movie that was prduced by Times Group, Khalid when he was on good terms with AB gave 5 stars to K3G!!!! (that’s inexplicable), Taran Adarsh is always softy-softy on most reviews, Raja Sen always imposes his own cosmopolitan intellectualism on the movie he reviews…….I believe the easiest job is to criticise anyone, Khalid shud better look at his own stuff which he churned before turining his attention to others, jinke khud ke ghar sheeshe ke hon…..

  34. @ Tanul

Kunal Kohli used to present Chalo Cinema & the most funniest incident I remember of it was for Diwali 1997, he actually predicted that Dil To Pagal Hai would be a flop & Bhai would be the dark horse.I also remember 2 weeks later on the same show Kunal actually admitted his mistake & said DTPH is a block buster :) And look at the circle of life- whom does he make movies with- YRF of course :)

I think I’ve even mentioned this somewhere else on PFC- cos I find it very funny.

Going back to Taran bhai, yes Indiafm is a widely visited site.I do visit it regularly ,but nowadays its more for the trade angle.Like the fact that Ghajini is not getting postponed to Jan & that they would have paid previews on 24th Dec night is something which would come up first on Indiafm.

    .
As far as India FM and TA is concerned, may be public comes and read his reviews and there is a repeat audience that means somewhere many ppl are agreeing to his reviews. So somewhere we are not seeing what they are seeing :-)
    .
I personally not a big fan of his reviews but as a trade guy more times than less, TA has been right for the financial benefit (which actually most of us can judge too, so he is no Einstein)
    .
For me, I always read all the reviews or hear (from ppl who i know where they coming from)so that gives me an idea whether a movie will appeal to me. At times, even that does not help.
    .
I used to like KA’s style of writing in the 90s.
I like Masand baba’s review mostly..
for Raja sen, I don’t know once in a while he writes a coherent review.
    Nikhat I lost respect.
SKJ, he is like a Kaam waali bai who likes to gossip.
Baradwaj, he writes good but at times it looks forced that he needs to be away from the crowd. Just for the heck of it.
    .

I am not trying to support SRK here but I find it extremely irritating to have people trying to bash him just for the heck of it.Dude please realise that this is a big release & so is bound to generate curiosity- period!!!

Its a very very poor quality film and Adarsh ji must have been told to write kindly about it.I went with 16 year olds and they wanted to get out of the theatre half way through.SRK is embarrassing in his attempts to breathe some life into this dead script.

I dont know why intelligent people (like the ones who have written comments) even seek reviews from these third rate reviewers (adarsh, tarun, khalid)…

Do you think these 4th class pass guys can even for a second think better than you.

We should make our own opinion and not be misled by these dudes who are getting fat money to promote movies.

Taranji likes his drink and so it must be the wining and dining that does the trick. I remember seeing him at a preview where he kept pushing and shoving near the bar. He also kept sending his chamchas over to get his drinks before the alcohol ran out as is the case at many of these over crowded events.

I totally agree with domeafavour. These so called reviewers don’t have any special knowledge or expertise regaring cinema. It’s just that they are there. In that particular position. That’s it. They don’t even try to be sincere. They are shamelessly biased and are nothing but the peddlers of the crap their friends make. They also provide the additional service of trashing, thrashing, trivialising and ridiculing the movies made by or starring the competitors of these friends. Sometimes it’s personal and some times it’s the agenda of that particular publication which they have to follow. Whatever it is, it’s not trustworthy at all. If you wan’t to watch a particular film, go watch it irrespective of the review and if at all you want an opinion, ask your friends and colleagues. They will be more trustworthy than Khalid Mohammads of the world. This man has done nothing else than promoting Shahrukh Khan since his Filmfare days through TOI and now Hindustan Times.

rnbdj is a yrf -srk-aditya chopra. not top of the line but not bad either. what about would you rather watch prententious shit like black or taare zameen pe?

Rab ne bana di jodi. I curse and she yawns.
Disaster. I couldn’t sum it up more efficiently and neatly. How did the movie manage to garner the hype that it did. Some media persons must have been on a payroll. One shouldn’t expect the makers of Tashan to come up with anything better and Adi made sure he didn’t. What a pointless and story less mess. Take SRK out and you have yourself a perfect cup of espresso(minus coffee and milk). Like every other disaster this movie heads from the start to the same place all other movies of its class go, to the movie-shredder( i hope to god somebody invents it and places it in all theatres countrywide.) Not for a nanosecond did I feel connected with the movie. Rab ne.. seems to move ahead of everybody including audiences. No point in dissecting the first/second halves. Both are mundane and totally avoidable. Music is below average and songs dont gel with the movie at all. Dialogues seem to have been copy-pasted from other SRK movies. I have no idea why the story was based in Amritsar and had the so-out-of-original-ideas Punjabi undertone with all the ‘Hello- ji , this ji and that ji’. Rab ne.. feels like the Punjabi tarka overcooked, burnt and re heated a hundred times.

SRK looks too old and his face a bit too bony with all the bones sticking out. He’d do good to retire completely from typical romantic stories and follow Aamir Khan. Let his ego decide.

I saw ‘Pineapple Express’ yesterday and I loved Seth Rogan.Hollywood is getting better everyday in each genre and we are in complete shit to say the least.

I’ll rate Rab ne when i die and meet Rab ji and ask him if he did made this Adi Chopra jodi.
Did we all hear a ‘No’ from somewhere…………

too many question marks but its true. Nothing is real. But these movie are only to give a individual a feel for some time (three hours) that what a person feel in place of Sharukh Khan or Anoushka Sharma.
