Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Movie Review

….thodi ? Its only to rhyme with the title of the film. Actually its bahut zayada pakau.

Rab Ne Bana Di JodiWas reading this post of Roger Ebert last nite. His list of best films of the year and how it was difficult for him to pick up only ten films and so he has come out with a list of twenty films. I was discusing the same with my freinds and we had a tough time picking five good films this year… twenty ?? …hehehe….woh subah kabhi to aayegi. And so the BIG KING Khan is here before the year ends and this one is his single release of the year. And what a disppointment!! When will our big starts learn to look beyond the scripts of their good freinds ? Till then, lets suffer!

So, the dude is back. Aditya Chopra’s third film in thirteen years. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi – after spending three hours and scratching my bald head some three hundred times, i fail to understand what was so compulsive about this one that forced him out of hibernation.

The story is the same thats circulating in blogsphere for quite some time. Boring SRK gets married to a young girl and to make her fall in love with him, he becomes a new guy and then…u know, if its hindi film and if its yashraj films, what to expect.

But wait, Shahrukh Khan is not in double role….he is actually in triple role. One is boring Suriji, other is the irritating hero ji and there is a third one….yes yes…one who knows everything…the voice of sanity…he knows why Taani partner will like Heroji and why Suriji is a boring guy. He also knows that Suriji is funny because he lights up others lives. But still he remains Suriji. Confused ? Was this Aditya Chopra’s voice ? Or Who was it ? I didn’t get it. The way SRK switches from one character to other without making much of a difference is a failure on actor’s part. He seriously needs to watch Amol Palekar’s Golmaal to know the difference between playing a cool dude and pretending to be one when you are actually a dull one.

The way it starts, its interesting as the concept of love for the leads are so different. But few mins into the film and its all about LOVING YOUR RAB!! Its Raba-raba-rab!! Rubbing all the way, in almost every other scene….ghar me, office me, saloon me…you look around and you will find Rabji….he is omnipresent….you can’t argue with that!! So Rabji decides what should happen and what shouldn’t. Rabji is the third lead in the film! There is nothing intelligent about the story as its a liner straightforward story. The challenge was to hold the interest. But songs are unnecesarily forced in between, second half is packed with one after other gag and is stretched to three hours!!

There is a song featuing Kajol, Bipasha Basu, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee…first of all, there is no need for this one. And the novelty of star cameos is now overdone….last time it got me excited for Kal Ho Na Ho. And then Farah delivered the biggest punch with Om Shanti Om and all with a reason. Here, its just a waste. And there are numerous references to various Yashraj Films. Have been trying hard to figure out an alternative but the way we consume cinema, dont think there is a way out.

We are asked to see the films and not the filmmaker. But i have never been able to do it as i find it impossible to separte the two. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mohabaateein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi….Aditya Chopra’s heroes have remained the same. He will face a romantic challege and he will defeat the villain/situation by being the nice guy, delivering new philosophy of love and finally convincing everyone that he is the winner. And i dont have any romantic bone left in my body after having the same recipe for ages….the love monologues are fuckall and the characters deliver it equally fuckall way. Check out the first big one of Taani (Anoushka Sharma) when she tells Suriji what she thinks about love and why she would never be able to love him. Its hilarious! For a moment, i felt was watching some 80’s film. whenever there is any confusion…trust the rab. Before the finale, why Taani decides to go for the boring Suriji is also not clear….bus usme Rab dikhta hai! Aditya Chopra really endorses this view ? Or he thinks he has got new branding of love ? would really like to know.

Liked the way Heroji proposes to Taani partner…atleast there is a reason there. Its a lot similar to Dostana….when Abhishek (or was it John) proposes to Priyanka but that was just dumb!

If you don’t want to waste three hours then do check out Vinay Pathak’s track in Aaja Nachale. That was much more intersting and enjoyable. And somehow i have a feeling that the germ of this story is the same track. Vinay is also here as Suriji’s best freind but doesn’t have much to do. Now waiting for Ghajini…..as KK said….Nolan got a new tatoo on his chest…Murgadoss killed Memento!! Waiting to know if its revenge time or not.

Moral of the story….

Subhash Ghai – Bhole aadmiyoon ki shaadi nahi hoti….
Aditya Chopra – Agar shaadi ho bhi gayee to usme sex nahi hota hai. Use bus Rab dikhta hai
Phoenixnu – aur mujhe rab-o-phobia ho gaya hai!!

Surprise, surprise, to date Taran Adarsh has not given a single revu of RNBDJ on Indiafm and its close to EOD in India here, this when he generally puts out revus by noon.

  6. Taran Adarsh, gives it a 2 star. Not exactly torn it apart, but not too gushing either. Here are some snippets

“The problem is, RAB NE BANA DI JODI works in patches. The first 30 minutes and the penultimate 30 minutes are the highpoint of the enterprise, but the screenplay in between doesn’t hold your attention. That’s the truth!

“In a nutshell, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is no DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE. It’s not MOHABBATEIN either. At best, it’s an average fare that may generate some curiosity initially, that’s it. You expect much, much more, but… alas!”

“But the screenplay falters the moment Shah Rukh’s character Surinder transforms into Raj and his personality undergoes a sea-change. The first question that strikes you is, why didn’t Anushka realize it’s him, her husband, not someone else? Sure, he has undergone a complete makeover, but how can you not recognise your husband’s voice or appearance? That’s a glaring flaw, it’s like taking the viewer for granted! ”

“Director Aditya Chopra is letdown by his own writing. The story is not convincing, the screenplay is not water-tight and therefore, RAB NE BANA DI JODI does not create the impact it ought to make. Also, the film is quite lengthy. With a running time of approx. 2.45 hours, RAB NE BANA DI JODI could’ve easily done with some trimming. The unwanted flab could’ve been trimmed for a better impact. “

    hehe…really liked the ‘rab’ references…
although I havent seen the movie…and dont really like the new yash chopra/aditya chopra brand or love stories (i am the only person i knw who has not seen veer-zaara…but is it because i am the only person i know???) but i still feel that the ‘anti-’ brigade tends to be over critical of their cinema…also i dont think one should comment on the sensibilities of the movies, esp when reviewing them for others (against expressing ur own opinion) as it is very subjective…(the reason yrf is as big as it is, eh!)
as for reviews…i really do wonder why most of the paid critics are mum…maybe yrf didnt send them free tkts or setup a spl screening… (though i knw they did!)
oh and another point…Golmaal had amol palekar as a cool guy playing a geek, here its the other way round, so not a good idea to suggest that to SRK or any other aspirants for similar roles…

phoenixnu! that was rather angry nai? We respect everyone, and also everyone’s opinion, but that includes the makers of this film!
I agree that the double role was not scripted realistically… and that the “dude” part of srk was too good to be possibly executed by the shy and fragile surinder.. so i totally agree with the “golmaal” training.. but that said- i also thought that this film had a very firm foundation. It’s a very honest film. From my personal experiences and knowing the mentality and conservativeness of firm-rooted traditional punjabi girls..and the families they belong to, i reckon that the film starts off on a very realistic note.. everything totally makes sense. the “nerdy” surinder is wonderfully portrayed..the stuttering.. the shy glances and confusion-all A1! Anushka did GREAT in the first pre-marriage scene.. unexpected for a first timer! the best part about her being the fact that in not a single scene in the movie she looks intimidated by shahrukh and the star he is..She is her own person.
The beginning of the film was a blast from the past for me(being born in Amristar)..stunning images of punjab.. the golden temple.. halwaais singing punjabi folk by chamkila!.. gol gappa wala washing his stall with pipe water..the trucks..patli galiz.. evrything is SO well handled..!! also! the movie is VERYY well researched.. from accents (1st movie where srk’s accent is flawless at all times..esp the scene when he’s the nerd and looking at his reflection on the back of a katori and says – “kidddaaaan!” .. Well!me and my punjabi friend’s had a great laugh (the mangalorean kannad people beside us thot we were crazy!)… minor details such as when surinder writes down his mobile numbr on a piece of paper fr taani.. its 98766–smthin .. which is actually a punjab number!! may sound silly but film makers usually miss out this kinda stuff… then the flirting scene.. anushka is too good.. it felt like the time when i was once shooed away fr flirting !! i think the film gets a lil slow in the second part of the 1st half… but from after the interval till the end its brilliant! the changing room scene.. look at taani’s eyes when she tells abt what a girl really needs.. deep! then when shez angry/confused/frustrated and works her ass off around the house.. washing clothes.. washing the already washed dishes! .. great direction..
i think the “i love you” scene was a lil too extreme on the fantasy for such a realistic movie till then.. hard to digest.. but i guess it was needed to show the madness!! but it sorta pissed me off when she saw that i love u lit city on posters and paintings at the punjab power carnival watever.. vinay pathak is brilliant as usual.. great actor! the climax is greatly done..!!
and THE CREDIT-SIDE SHOW IS HILARIOUS!!.. japaani topi .. indian kiss!!

watch it with a loved one..
watch it for a loved one…
Watch it when you’re not in a judgemental mood.. get into the characters.. You’ll love it.

  62. Well I’ve seen the movie & here is what I feel-

Positives- SRK has pulled off both the characterisations considerably well and particularly as Surinder Sahni he is very convincing & real.Anushka is a find ( hope she doesnt go the Mahima Chowdhary,Gracy Singh way) & does manage to impress, there is nothing overdone in the movie ( like its shot in Amritsar but no usual loud Punjabi caricatures etc), Haule Haule & Dance Pe Chance are quite good & the way the movie ends ( especially end credits ) is quite well done.

Negatives- Nothing novel about the plot.Is similar to the Vinay Pathak segment of Aaja Nachle & also has shades of Pati Patni aur Woh.During the 2nd half for nearly a good half an hour the pace sags a lot & the audience (till then contented) starts getting uneasy.Apart from SRK & Anushka there are hardly any other characters.Even Vinay Pathak’s role hardly has any substance.

All said & done if its viewed just as any other movie I would rate it as a good movie. But considering that its an Adi Chopra-SRK combo, I’m a bit disappointed- it could have been better.

    @Tanul – strange.

whats so shameless abt the scriptwriter of this film is that wherever he can’t hold the script together he brings in the god angle. then it becomes like – you are against god if you think its getting absurd. its some kind of blackmailing.

and ofcourse, those stupid theories on the nature of ‘love’. as if the scriptwriter is some psychologist or some authority on the topic of love. somebody should give him a nobel prize in science for his thesis on ‘love’ , i wonder if he’l be so shameless to accept it. freakin manipulator!

i would like to see what the scriptwriter will do if his daughter ‘falls’ in ‘love’ with some asshole low-income good-for-nothing labour like a driver who is an SRK fan and ‘believes’ in the ‘love’ that is seen in srk films like this.
hmm..seems like a good premise for a movie script. no copyrights, any takers? mr. suparn verma?

ive read in an srk interview on indiafm that this film was written in 12 days and shot in 47 days. not surprising at all. just 3 characters, almost whole film shot in sets in some film studio. excluding the remunerations, the production cost mustve been very less, actually extremely less compared to other ‘big’ hindi films.
i guess this prod company needed to infuse some funds into their company and this movie is like some quick fund-raiser. put in srk, ofcourse put in love, put in god(it works), make a quick buck.
no integrity, no shit, nothing. just money. by manipulation & exploitation of the indian emotion.
undoubtedly a very good businessman this guy is.

let me end this with some good points about the film : music, ocassional cleavage of the heroine, and….. hmm…

    Satyam Shivam Sundaram.

I’ve never liked ‘Satyam…’, it’s absurd & silly, no matter whatever the points it tried to make!

Whats common between RNBDJ, Bhootnath, OSO, Chak De India, Don,KANK,Paheli & Swades?

These are the movies done by him in the last 3 years in the exact reverse order.I have left out movies like Shaurya or I See You or Hey Baby where he has been a sutradhar or been there for a song etc.

  70. I have always felt that just like two people are not alike, different people can interpret the same movie differently. So if someone likes RNBDJ,someone may not like it.Its the same for any movie.

So by that logic people who have seen it & havent liked it have as much right to write about it here as much as people who’ve liked it.Even I have expressed both my positive & negative views on the movie after watching it.

What irks me is the fact that there are generally a lot of SRK/YRF bashers who are trying to have a field day now. Also more irritating is the fact that people who havent watched it commenting negatively on the movie.Give me a break.Sure you dont have to watch a movie to write about it.But if you are being fiery about something, cant you atleast watch it, be sure & then write???

KANK, he was one of the worst things in the movie for me, he did the same thing which he has done before in Chalte Chalte and Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam, where he plays an insecure husband.

at first when I saw it I was extremely irritated with him & the character. But then I’ve realised that it takes courage for someone like him to do a role where the entire audience ( whether they are his fans or not) would be hating him all the more considering he’s the hero & not the villain in that movie.Just for this one point I appreciate what he did.

I saw it yesterday. The movie starts off very nicely. The first 45 minutes are real good. Its like the movie is cruising nicely on Bombay Pune Highway. Then comes the Raj part. Which is OK. It has its moments but the pace becomes inconsistent. Its like driving on any urban city road with few potholes. Nevertheless the journey continues. Phir aata hain last 30 minutes or so. We are back on Bombay Pune highway. And the movie ends nicely in Japan. Loved that bit.

“Yeehaw”, they‘ll all rush to celebrate the failure of one more Yashraj project.

It‘s unfair to judge a film in one word, and then there are films that are simply, simply BAD.

After 2 days, my opinion on RNBDJ remains the same, that is, it is an entertainer, and nothing more. People looking for only entertainment without much logic will enjoy this alot. Others, like me, will sit and write where it went wrong. So here goes…

RNBDJ comes as a dissapointment, since the movie promised to be more of a class act on the lines of DDLJ & CDI. However, it ended up being just another crowd pleaser.

Going by SRK’s interviews and the promos, RNBDJ seemed like it would show how a common man could be loved for his simplicity, more on the lines of Rajpal Yadav’s Main, Meri Patni aur Woh, but, ofcourse, on a bigger canvas and in a more entertaining manner.

RNBDJ scores on the entertainment front, but falters big time in its message. The final message, if any, that this movie gives is that, a good-looking girl can only love a stylish, wannabe-type guy… the Raj sort of character. A simple Suri can only be respected like a “Rab”. If, at the scripting stage ifself, Aditya Chopra had reconsidered what he wanted to convey, then the movie could have been critically more well-received. Imagine if he had shown that Anoushka was noticing, and slowly and steadily falling for the simplicity of Suri rather than the loud buffoonery of Raj, things could have been more better.

Coming to SRK, I loved his performance as Suri, but where he messes up is playing the role of person who is acting as another character. Now, don’t get me wrong, but picturise this, Suri is only ‘acting’ as Raj, so his body language and mannerisms as Raj is only supposed to be with him when he is in the Raj mould infront of Anoushka. If left all alone, he should ‘technically’ and ‘emotionally’ be Suri, since, well… he is Suri. In the scene before the final dance competition where Anoushka tells Raj that she wouldn’t leave her husband and walks off, SRK emotes in relief… infact, he emotes excellently. But my only issue here is that he emotes as Raj, his body language and mannerisms are still of Raj. If his body language is shown transforming into Suri’s while emoting, then i feel the scene would have been a class act. He gets the physical aspects of the two different characters well, but what he couldn’t achieve is getting into the mind of the one character that he is playing, that of Suri’s. So, at the end, it seems as if SRK has played a double role. The audience shouldn’t have been deceived that there were two characters, only Anoushka should have.

So at the end, RNBDJ will most probably end up as a hit or a superhit for YRF. But a prestige hit like CDI or DDLJ… no way!!

Yeah Shahid, I agree, that Taani should’ve been shown to be falling in love with her husband and not just seeing a ‘rab’ in him.

Infact, had the film had a slight change in the storyline where the husband makes changes for his new bride, not as another man but as himself, would’ve worked better for me.

It would’ve been a simple, brilliant, convincing film.

    Oh well. It’s done now.

For SRK fans movie and mostly for ladies it will work. But for others its strictly no no.

The basic flaw is Anushka not recongnising SRK. And all Rab part is very stupid. SRK is nice as Suri , but as Raj he is over the top. And in Raj part, while doing his trademark Raj part, he was looking very wicked thanks to the old age. His facial bones were for display as if he is suffering from malnourishment.

Disappointing movie from YRF and Adi. It may run on BO for some weeks thanks to no new release and
