Rabbi’s bollywood debut – good. Not great.

The man rocked the nation with bull ki jaana main kaun. Music, lyrics, unconventional voice and the video…everything came together and a new music sensation was born. Rabbi Shergill. As Shahrukh says in KBC…ek sawaal aapki zindagi badal sakta hai ( one question can change your life) it was the same with Rabbi. Only difference was ek gaana…bulla.

Rabbi has now made his bollywood debut. Jimmy Shergill and Neha Dhupia starrer Delhi Heights. Lyricist-composer-singer…all rolled in one. End result – good. But nothing great.

The album starts with dilli song. And its the best song of the album. Philosophical notes about the city. Rabbi in his ususal form, pleasing to ears. Rocking the guitar, the video is on air these days. But somehow the video doesnt do justice to the beautiful song. If you have been to the capital once, you can identify with the song easily. But if not, dont worry, you will still like the song. Sample the line…Aur sadkein thi sab mere baap ki. Now who doesnt think that?

Second song…tere bin…is from his first album. No doubt its a good song. But its disappointing to see that out of only six songs, one is old.

Out of the other four, kitni der tak….is good. Kabhi aana na is average. Aaja Nachie is the punjabi number and ey gori is holi one. Sonu Nigam and Rabbi come together for Kitni der tak. A romantic number with good melody and rhythm. Aaja Nachie is by Salim Shahzada and since am not big fan of all those punjabi dance numbers for shaadi-gaana-bajana, I would skip that anyday. But if you are in mood to do bit of foot-tapping, its ok. Last song….ey gori is by Kailash Kher and Sonu Kakkar. They complement each other really well and has that mischievious feel to it. With holi around the corner, this song will also do well.

The plus point – Rabbi has tried to be diffrent. Nothing bollywood-ish about it. No pyaar-mohabbat-suroor lyrics and its such a relief ! But Rs 175 for 6 songs ( 5 new song + 1 old one) is bit costly. The album comes with the lyrics of the songs and their english translation as well – one feature I would love to see in all the albums. But it disppoints because I was expecting something exceptional from the bulla ki jaana man. Will place my bet on only one track…dilli.

= I agree… yes it’s different. But it didn’t grip me like a “Bulla Ki Jana” or even close to it. I found a lot of country and perhaps some blues in a song or two, which was a nice try.

i actually liked the video more than the song. it showed old delhi and new delhi. also they showed the lotus temple; don’t think that many movies/music videos have shown that.

anyway, as i have mentioned before the album is just above par; it had potential to be great but falls short.

i liked dilli, but also liked kabhi aana, and simply loved the punjabi track, the songs have an uncomfortable feel to them that slowly grow, much like the rabbi of ishtihaar & jugni.
even i was a lil disappointed but pardoned considering it might be good situationally.

n the evergreen tere bin is anyways there to lift the spirits!

  4. I liked Dilli and Kitni Der Tak..Kitni Der Tak has Sonu Nigam in form and yet sounding different. I kind of expected a better song when I saw the name of the song : Dilli… So kinda disappointed. Didnt like Ey Gori at all. Kabhi aana na had good lyrics. Aaja Nachle is good Punjabi music.
    BTW,
if you guys want a music video with Delhi feel…check out Kesariya Balam from Lets Enjoy. The video is Delhi!

@HG…I didnt like the video bcz there is no thought into it. Rabbi…here, there, everwhere and showcasing Delhi’s landmark. When the song says…kahin koi gir raha hai…they have literally translated it…a guy falling from his bike…looks like kiddo stuff. Chcek out the song without the video…u will love it more. Sheila Dixit should promote it as Delhi tourism video. will help a lot.

Listening to Pankaj Awasthi’s one album called Nine these days. Dont knwo if its new or old. But the album has his first hit khuda ka waasta and dilbara mera rooth gaya as well….damn good album. If u love his voice, its must buy.

to be honest, i do not understand the ‘Dilli’ track. Perhaps I am finding it hard to grasp what he is signing since the music is a bit louder than his voice.

Album Nine was released in year 2005. (We had a brief chat on this album in your Atif’s Doorie comment section) Anyway, my favorite track from that album is ‘Duniya’

    #Soche Raho Ho
    #Kuch tho bolo
    #Apne Dil Ke
    #Saaz Chedo…

Oh b-t-w, there is a new music video – ‘Khuli Chuni Yaara Rab Le’ – on the air, at the moment. In the video there are two singers, girls in pink pajamas and a sexy teacher. If you have seen it do you know who are the singers? I like that song and video; it is quite funny.

@HG…ya i agree…I also felt the same…in few other songs as well…muisc is bit loud and cant make out the lyrics clearly. Mixing problem ??

Ya, i remember about that chat.Had heard khuda ka waasta earlier but some other album, not nine. I love almost all the songs of nine. No re, havent seen this video. Will check. BTW, bought Eklavya’s sound track recently. I think worth the money.

soundtrack of 1971 is out; it is good that they have got only a couple of songs and rest instrumental tracks. (no item songs, thank god!) they had to look at commercial side of it, so they have got a couple of remixes in it, but still those tracks are not disappointing.

Shibani Kashyap is back. I did not like her Zinda Hoon track that much, but boy this Sehelenge Hum track is awesome. And Kailash’s Bhangra Pauna is entertaining.

(phoenxinu, i know this is a bit unrelated to your article, but you like discussing about music and i did not want to post an article, so…. )

bought Eklavya’s soundtrack. Some hanutung background n 2-3 nice songs as well.worth buying.

kulli wichoon….my punju friends told me…kull is not punju word…but the other words mean…find you love in this crowd.
