Random thoughts after watching METRO

1.Brilliant, A true metropolis film, not a fake yashraj take on it, a little too neat but yet real..
2.What gives me a kick is that a film with Shilpa, Sharman, KK, irrfan , konkona, about love life etc, kicks Tara rum pum in its ass.. love is more real, conversations more real .. this is how love stories would be made in the future..if not then God save “YRF”..
3.Bombay of Metro looks better than New York of KANK..Former is money well spent, latter is money down the shitter..
4.Ronnie Screwwala is the only wise man standing..
5.UTV is who I would lay my bets on..
6.The way the songs were structured , was original, yet kind of reminded me of Head On..
7. that one tilted frame when KK takes his daughter to the doc and the lift door shuts, and shilpa leans against the wall, sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise brilliantly shot film..another thing that bothered me was the floating postcards during that song when everyone is on the bike.. there it stopped being a film and became a music video..
8.Irrfan had the most populist role, Kaykay and sharman the most difficult roles, Shilpa was a revelation, Konkona well, has she ever been bad or has anything not been said about her..Shiney still has to put in a lot more..
9.Watching Dharamji after such a long time actually made me cry..
10. Why is it that KK always picks roles that tests his range rather than his popularity..he excels all the time but someone always walks away with the limelight.. is it that I love him too much..
11. Irrfan the way he stared at konkona’s breasts, after crying out loud..irrfan’s third best performance after Namesake and Haasil..
12. why couldn’t I write a scene construction like “who gaadi tab nikalega jab saare signal green ho jaayenge”.. I envy you sanjib data..
13.I envy your sense of constructing a scene and your frames my namesake basu..and your music sense..
14. Economy of scenes..
15. Kangana work with dubeyji to control your lisp, practice your dialogues while biting down on a pencil.. it helps.. she grew on me slowly.. first few scenes, that voice bothered me..Shiney’s eyes don’t say what his mouth says.. but when it’s only his eyes talking, he is intense..
!6. basu you work so goddamn hard on it all or those transitions just come naturally? Do you write them in the script, shot divisions or shoot them as you go along?
17.Bobby wow..
18.Even though it borrows from the THE APARTMENT..it proves three things.. one , inspite of lots of great things even basu couldn’t escape borrowing, two, he interpreted and adapted it so smoothly that he can be forgiven, third at least Basu watches good cinema, doesn’t limit himself to last year’s blockbuster..
19. pl do read and compare Khalid mohammad’s reviews of Tara Rum Pum and Metro, not just look at the stars given, read them and you will see whose payroll he is on..

A friend of mine referred to me this site. I now thank that friend of mine for a wise decision.
I’m being a movie buff after reading the postings of Anurag Kashyap ji. Particularly this one.
Its such a masterpiece which can be compared to a surgeon on his operation theatre performing a complex surgery yet with so ease.
Thanks Anurag ji for such a nice analysis. No wonder your films also reflects life and love too.
I think you to be a true lover or this kind of article could not be created.
Hats off to you Anurag ji.

Thanks a lot for the great article. You had the precision of a surgeon in dissecting the Metro.
Only a person endowed with true love can create a master piece like this one.
    Hats off to Anurag ji.

AK, can you elaborate on your reference to the structure of the songs reminding you about Head-On? I’ve seen Head-On thrice but am not sure what you are referring to specifically. Just curious.

otherwise this is entertainment at its beshtesht

  12. Anurag Kashyap on May 15th, 2007 2:22 pm

Vijay.. the way songs came after every episode.. the group standing by the riverside singing in turkish.. they were always at the same place though.. but just head on could have sparked off the idea.. metro doesn’t borrow or copy from there.. it just reminds me of HEAD ON

  13. Maya on May 15th, 2007 2:39 pm

    :) i wanna watch metro..

  14. Vijay on May 15th, 2007 3:08 pm

Yes, that’s right AK! The film opens with them singing. It cuts back to them 2 or 3 times, between the different phases in Cahit & Sibel’s relationship. Thanks for the reminder. Head-On is an awesome movie.

Ketan Mehta tried it in Mangal Pandey with those guys singing on top of the elephant. I’ve seen some Tamil films too in the past that have used that with folk music in a rural setting.

  15. Manish on May 15th, 2007 5:34 pm

Anaurag.. What does YRF have anything to do with Metro. They make their brand of films and are happy. You make your type of films. I as a viewer will decide which film to watch. Why do you have be a cynic all the time? Khalid Mohammed gave an excellent review for your film. Does this imply that he is on your payroll? Metro is a an excellent film but is a derivative film. TRPP is not meant to compete with Metro and I have no intention of watching it. That is a choice I make.

  16. wb on May 15th, 2007 5:41 pm

good for you manish. andaz apna apna.

  17. OM on May 15th, 2007 8:13 pm

@ Vijay…Mahesh Bhatt used to use it a lot in his earlier movies with Arun Bakshi as the folk singer….Ass-shi-qui, Phir teri Kahani yaad aayi, etc.

  18. Justin John on May 15th, 2007 8:23 pm

In “There’s something about Mary” also a band appears whenever a song came. In the end of the movie one of the band members was shot. Loved that. :d

Didn’t see Metro. Will watch b’cos I love Anurag Basu’s movies. Even the ones that flopped or were inspired. And I want to see Dharmendra. Am a big fan of him.

  19. Meeta on May 15th, 2007 8:29 pm

Hey Anurag, I loved the signal dialogue too.

Though, I think script-wise they messed up the climax quite a bit. Barring the way the Ranjeet-Shikha track culminated, the others seemed contrived and disappointed big time. This kept the movie from being great for me.

As far as TRRP is concerned, I think the target audience was kids and they hit the nail there. My kids have created a TRRP game in which they take a pit stop while cycling :d

  20. aditi on May 15th, 2007 11:42 pm

Hey, am taking family for Metro…just saw TRRP…it sucks…but kids thot it was OK….YRF’s New York hold on children is killing….as somebody said…NY seems like down the road to CP in delhi for these kids…..need more Metros, I guess.

  21. kartik krishnan on May 15th, 2007 11:45 pm

the only thing which stuck out likemsore thumb throughout (besides Shiney’s acting) was the songs … why are the band playing everytime a song starts … This irritated the audience and i could sense it … I wish Anurag Basu had avoided it ..

That apart … rest is quite nice in the film. And yes the dialouges and scenes are “economical” in time and space too.

    Quite a good film.

By the way … why the hell does shilpa forgivce and forget KK. KK is shown to be such a bastard in the film. And yet shilpa doesn’t walk out on him. Haqrd to digest but yes as my friend said “that’s the reality… had shilpa not been a mother, she would’ve walked out..”

  22. Sangeeta on May 16th, 2007 1:10 am

KK - somethings are not meant to be understood, in shilpa’s case her family had to be above love :(

  23. kartik krishnan on May 16th, 2007 1:35 am

    Sanny - I’m not a women’s rights crusader ..nor am i a hardcore MCP.

My point is that shilpa knows KK is a bastard and despite “apologising” and coming back to her (after being dumped by his GF), Shilpa accepts him. Isn’t she aware that a guy like KK (who shows no remorse whatsoever anywhere, and who’s only “redeeming quality” is his decent relationship with the daughter) will not womanise again ???

And pls pls oh plas dont even get me started on the scene when they both confess they’re having an affair. Shilpa hasn’t “done” anything and she gets to be the “victim” whereas our man KK who’s almost caused a girl to commit suicide (besides sleeping with her) … gets away with it ???

I mean somehow I cannot digest that as a viewer. May be thats what Anurag Basu wanted to convey… But heck that track left me really dissapointed. It seemd illogical to me even though it might be happening with many (Indian)women in real life.

P.S : I know anurag what u will say “Stop looking for logic !!!”

  24. Meeta on May 16th, 2007 1:41 am

KK - Fortunately or unfortunately, life is not logical all the time. I can so completely see a woman like Shikha allowing herself to be walked over like that for her child in real life.

  25. Sangeeta on May 16th, 2007 1:54 am

But Kartik that’s real na .. many guys would probably react the way KK’s character did. He isn’t perfect and this is apparaent throughout the movie .. his character isn’t sorry for being teh complete bast*** that he is, If he whored about it’s okay but to even imagine anyone else being with his wife is like a whole different thing to them.

The joy on her child’s face when her father returned home was what I thought changed Shilpa’s mind of choosing happiness over duty.

  26. Joyjeet on May 16th, 2007 2:02 am

But was Shiney that bad? Didn’t he give some nice moments too like while strolling on the streets with Shilpa…
Agree with KK on the bands thing… it got a bit jarry, more so with Pritam’s stupid smile on every song and James’s overacting. He, though, has some voice.
Another point… If it’s Life In A Metro then why make deal with only Life Of The Middle Class In A Metro?
But bottomline, Anurag, is that your namesake is getting better with each movie.

  27. Sangeeta on May 16th, 2007 2:08 am

“Anurag, is that your namesake is getting better with each movie.”

Yeah let’s hope the industry churn out some more Anurag’s

Nothing to Metro, which is yet to be seen.
But Anurag, you did miss KHNH, while comparing Bombay and New York. KHNH was more criticized than KANk wrt NY’s POV. :-?

  29. Anurag Kashyap on May 16th, 2007 2:51 am

kk all ihave to say is it happens.. such is life, its not always ideal or poetic justice..it has its imperfections..
joyjeet,Sangeeta he was always good.even i liked his other films..if you see the TV work he did.. it was incredible

  30. DPac on May 16th, 2007 2:55 am

    @kk
i am surprised you are looking for logic in a totally believable KayKay/Shilpa string !!
when u seem to have totally overlooked the superficial dialogue fare meted out for the Dharam/Nafisa pair..

Hmmmm Anurag - its true … Life is full of imperfections.

  32. Vasan on May 16th, 2007 6:07 am

KK i think was Shipla did was very much in her character. recollect the hotel scene with shiney…..when he asks her do u love your husband….she says a meek unconvincing “yes” and when he asks her does he love you…..the same….”yes” ….but with an addition….”mujhe lagta hai…”…she is hopeful….she wants her marriage to work….feels guilty and lies even when she goes to watch a play

  33. Phoenixnu on May 16th, 2007 7:35 am

KK…everyone doesnt have “innisai mood swings of oldboy”!! so all of us react so differently in the same situation.
Shiney…with every film of his,i wonder how sudhir got him to act in HKA. and hopefully again in khoya khoya chand. have always liked kangana since her debut film. only if she cud do something about her VOICE!!! though never dared to watch shakalaka doom doom.

  39. John on May 16th, 2007 9:11 am

Saw Metro. Don’t agree with most of what is said. Overall, film is good technically (pretty smooth actually) but has nothing new to offer in terms of script. Almost every track is cliched. I mean it is a film with multiple stories. There is so much that one can do there.

Let ’s illustrate with an example like “Love actually”, which uses multiple stories without enmeshing them though.

Look at the stories in “Love Actually”.

    1. Conversation and love story between two body doubles.
    2. A small kid taking his father’s help to woo a girl from his class.
    3. A fading rock star and his man friday.
    4. A prime Minister falling in love with his secretary

    Compare this with Metro:
    1. A married woman has an affair (albeit mental while the hypocritical husband has a physical one)- (How original?)
    2. A 30 year old virgin and a man who looks loving at cleavages (Now where have we seen this before? Ahh … Mumbai Matinee, the 40 year old virgin, etc. with the sex changed)
    3. A secretary having an affair with her boss. Somebody else is in love with her. (Yawn!)
    4. A band singing on the road (Head on, There is something about Mary & umpteen hindi films where some roadside woman, man, beggar, etc break into a song)

In its favour, some scenes rock and have not seen them before like

    1. Sharman giving out a key to his house to his bosses (That really worked for me. Though it was original, hope it’s not picked from anywhere)
    2. Performances are rocking except for Shiney. Think there is something wrong with the way he says his dialogues.
    3. Music works to the mood of the film. Think instead of playing the whole song, it would have worked better to play just a couple of stanzas.

Of course, Metro is better than a Tara Rum Pum Pum (a bad mix of Cinderella Story & Days of Thunder), but then does one really need to compare? YRF is making money not films and with money, they make more films which make more money (At least they have their priorities right). The world knows that. But to say a little something in their favour, no film is an absolute rip off (though some of them are real bad mixes) of a DVD (Bheja Fry is the latest in that category)

Have read some other views on Bheja Fry (Did the producer buy the rights of some french film before he made Bheja Fry?) Call up your dvd library and ask for a film called “Dinner Game” and lets play “Spot the 10 differences” But then does anyone really care?

What is lacking very clearly are original ideas even with the tried and tested formats. For e.g. the characters in metro could have been very original (like in “Love Actually”).

Somtimes one listens to the views here and wonders whether some other people who write are not getting paid or are friends of people who make those films.

I do agree with one thing though. That people who write reviews have to make crackass films. I don’t know of anybody who falls in tha category.

    Cheers

  41. Jwalant on May 16th, 2007 12:56 pm

btw I am hearing that Metro is a big flop everywhere like TRPP. What do our audience want? Is there a set formula for a hit film?

  42. Rocko on May 16th, 2007 1:55 pm

    Anurag,

Was just curious, why such acrimony against YRF :-)? Did you have a tiff with Aditya Chopra?
I think Aditya Chopra is one the most brilliant business minds out there in movie industry.

  43. atray on May 16th, 2007 2:54 pm

I think Ur agree on that aaditya I not filmmaker but a moneymaker

  44. Milind on May 17th, 2007 1:37 am

I completely agree with all that Anurag has mentioned while penning his observations… These are really the films of the future… Hats off to Basu for what he’s done with Metro. The film rocks!!

Ta Ra Rum Pum was pits… I fail to understand how the project even took off in the first place. And a film like Metro slamming the daylights out of the yashraj flick is just the beginning… Similarly saucy squashes are soon to come…

And yeah Anurag, Black Friday ROCKED !!!

  45. BD on May 17th, 2007 3:33 am

Anurag Sir,ur question why KK selects roles tstng his range than his populrty is just what I always felt but never cud sort of place my finger on it! U hv hit it right on the head ! I felt the same in Hazaaron…. KK had the more difficlt role he prformd it amzngly well yet Shiny Ahuja got most f de acclaim; Shiny 2 was brilliant I cant grudge him his praise yet I felt a bit sad for KK! Same for Metro Yeah Irrfan is ofcourse internatinaly acclmd 4 Warrior & Namesake & he is a NSD graduate,is a DAMN GOOD actor& is more xperincd than KK but still somhw I always sort of prefr KK to Irrfan again as u put it is it that I love KK’s actng skills 2 much, am i biased in his favr; still cant figr it out! Loved this post I cud relate to it a lot. I feel u r the only director who can utilise KK 2 his full potntial atleast on screen: havent seen him on stage ,what a tragedy!

  46. Kapil Varindani on May 17th, 2007 6:05 am

I was not very happy with Dharam-Nafisa angle but guess anuraag had too many things to say and he wanted to cover areas like age has got nothing to do with love or maybe itz NEVER TOO late to CONFESS…and one more thing kaash shiny-shilpa ko aur deeper level par explore kar liya hota….maybe anuraag must hv got tempted too but i think to maintain the balance he left it half baked…otherwise a fab film…fab performances….hatz off to everyone associated with Metro~!!

  47. t! on May 17th, 2007 7:35 am

Kapil, the Dharam-Nafisa angle was one of the best parts of the movie for me!!!

Because, that segment/spot had to be filled by some couple, and any other filmmaker would have gone the traditional route, using another hot-looking couple or a wise, elderly widow. Anurag threw a curve-ball and went with two people finding long-lost love, an event that ended up driving the actions of two of the characters and wrapping up the story!

And, while I have been silent up to now, I loved KK’s character. Guess what? Not all men are good, and not all bad men are completely bad. Sometimes bad husbands are amazing fathers. In real life people are what they are. I really appreciated the fact that there was no attempt to redeem or explain this character, he was just real.

Unconventionality. That is what makes this movie such a good watch…

yah .. i agree metro is different and good movie. much better than tara rum pum , but dont you think movie screenplay could be made much better.. like the third last scene of irrfan khan entering station to get back shruti …. perhaps made movie lost his orginality…

Anurag Sir, Khalid Mohammed has a given a good review for Ek Chalis Ki Last Local. Wow, he seems to be on the payroll of a lot of directors. Anurag Sir, I would also like concur that Hrithik, Salman and Sharrukh have sold out to commerical cinema. John Abraham has not and he is the best actor. Wait a minute, is he not the star of your next movie - No Smooking or something.

  51. Kapil Varindani on May 19th, 2007 4:04 am

Yeah bro…so true ‘Unconventionality’…hope the positive response generated by this FILM gives the makers the much needed courage, confidence,STARS(purely for wider reach) & BUDGET to try out new things in Indian Cinema.

  52. CC on May 19th, 2007 7:31 am

Anurag Kashyap calls Metro a true metropolis film, well I strongly feel it is but not truly. Where is the common man in this metro? Where is the rickshaw driver? Where is the BMC sweeper? Where is the traffic havaldar? All these people and many more are an integral part of this metro called Mumbai. They also face the brunt of this metropolis like the characters in the film. They also have complex relationships like shown in the film. Ironically Anurag basu

  53. harneet singh on May 19th, 2007 11:36 pm

Anurag, I’ve been wanting to say this for quite a while but somehow never got down to it. I like the fact that when you criticize then you do it constructively, in the sense that you share your opinion fearlessly. But what I like more is that when you praise someone or something (Anurag Basu’s Metro and EK Chalis Ki Last Local) then also you do it full on dil se without any agenda! That’s what sustains creativity and that’s what is such a rarity this industry. More power to your pen!!!

Please do not post identical comments on multiple posts.

Hi Ak basically i support ur honest take on the film industry. I will always be part of your fight against the baises like khalids and srk and big banners who are only interested in the commercial value and not creative values. Time is come to come together and fight this dirty mined people who play games and form groups. This people are cowards of our industry. who only jump on the 2 paise ka fame they have got they forget how they climeb the ladder. And if we expect good performances or diverse experimentaiton they tell us to fly kite (srk ka baccha) are we not suppose to expect good versatile performances from the best? Metro as rightly said rocks great music grt performances by one and all I would say. Even the next door doctor where sharman stays. Best of the lot is offcourse my favorite Irrfan with this film i think he has arrived in the commercial arena which again is the demand in the rat race. This talented guy is struggling in this industry for last 2 decades what a waste of talent. Irrfan has proved he is a versatile actor with this film look at his comic antics it was the grt surprise of the film. To my mind hats off to the thinking director anurag only he could have dared to cast irrfan. And i would also like to give credit to his sense of understanding music and the current craze pritam and his rock fusion mix kind of music. He is one guy who is growing leaps and bounds in music arena. My dream Ak pls sign irrfan in one of your films

Totally agree with Manish…..If Salman and SRk are crap so is John Abraham. He is so darn wooden and just keeps flashing his dimple, madhubalasque crooked smile, and six pack in that order.!!!!!At least Salman gave us lots of comedies and SRK is one of the best guys for romance.
Whats with this site? YOu guys are hell bent on shooting down those who make and like fun films. Even Amir khan whose acting is raved about chooses to do brainless romantic movies like Fanaa……
Every actor has given good movies along with his umpteen commercial ones.
So get on with it and make some good movies —- whatever kind arty or otherwise …Just make them enjoyable.
It would be xtreeeeeemely boring to have an year full of traffic signals, black friday, omkara,corporate…..
The rate of suicides will skyrocket!!!! and so will the sale of prozac

some funny moments of metro……remember the scene when sharman joshi brings this sex worker home and she asks him do you have topi………and another one was the phone calls of all the concerned parties rescheduling their “sex nights” and each person has to check up with their partners………..boy! thats funny………its suprising for people like us living outside of india for so long and aren’t current about the current affairs there…….and with this rate indians soon leave usa far behind in sexual activities………
:d/…….now, on a serious note, why did shilpa shetty fesses up her of her newly formed love affair to her wayward husband…….there’s no need to since she didnt do anything with the new guy.

Welcome to the premier of ‘Namesake’ on PFC TV!

A pleasant surprise to see your comment Anurag! This post must’ve been heart-warming. Whatever said and done.. it was well deserved. Hope to see much more of you on PFC!

  62. Indraneel on May 24th, 2007 3:51 am

    Anurags…

Could not digest the Shilpa ending..but really a good movie otherwise…damn good songs…Loved James’s Alvida and Rishtey…

Good editing right through..as AK puts it..economy of shots…keeps you riveted!!

  63. Jahan Bakshi on May 24th, 2007 6:25 am

Just my opinion, but I think James ruins Alvida…compared to KK’s version, his take on the song comes across as patchy. I think he overdoes the expressions and as a result goes completely off. Not seen the movie yet, hope to see it soon…and I swear, if Kangana can improve her diction/accent….this girl can rule!!!

  64. anurag basu on May 24th, 2007 11:06 am

orignal end was..no shiney..no kk..and shilpa deceides to live her life on her own with her daughter..but from day one my wife did’nt like this ending..so thts why this end. :)

  65. Mainak on May 24th, 2007 11:15 am

I agree with your wife Anurag.
That ending would have been very filmy to me. Whats happens in your film is what most women decide to do. Keep listening to her Anurag.

    cheers
Last film seen - THE APPARTMENT :)

  67. OM on May 24th, 2007 11:19 am

Me too agree with Mainak and your wife Anurag.B, it was actually a pleasant surprise to see Shilpa come to the station and say ” I am gonna miss you”…a deft touch there.

Welcome to PFC….BTW Congrats on the new born :)>-

    Anurag

As a true and bold story teller, We (may be its only me!) would have received the original ending.
Women declaring the independence with boldness would have been the heartiest to watch.

Sorry, I am not against reconciliation or ever forgiving ‘Bharatiya Nari’ s. But as I lived vicariously through shilpa s character in film, I was about to declare my freedom towards the end of the film. But with that ending I lost living that character.

But it was more than a Good Film. Its still not great!

Seriously Dharmendra s adamant face was an awkward string in the whole guitar of film. Also need not showing the band all across thefilm. Once or twice it could have been fine. Should have restricted thme to background there after.

But this year was great, I was really hell bored of Bollywood films, but to my wonder I watched good films from them these months! three chers to all harbingers of change.

Re: Anurag K’s comment: “Why is it that KK always picks roles that tests his range rather than his popularity..he excels all the time but someone always walks away with the limelight..”

I think the character he portrayed in “Honeymoon Travels” really gave him that chance to play a lighter character.. he was by far the best thing in that film… I’d love to see more of that lighter side of him…

Same goes for Irfan in Metro… great to see someone cast him against type… Tigmanshu Dhulia used Irfan awesomely in Charas… that sarcastic humour, calm but dangerous demeanor… he was a villain with grey shades… just awesome… I bought the DVD of the film just for that performance… I loved his one-liners “Yeh Afghanistan nahin MERA-istaan hai”, “Ab sarkar ke hawale watan saathiyo”…

Imagine a comedy with these two great actors… fucking wow…

  72. Rasik on May 27th, 2007 8:44 am

    i too liked the film.

hello, plz brushup your gk,or go back to school and learn english so, that you can read names properly. the name of metro’s director is Anurah Basu NOT Anurag Kashyap…..tubelights

    Hi AK,

    one I love your movies.

Am very interested in knowing your views on Amitabh Bachchan’s best performance.

I think it was Bemisaal. even the character was very neatly etched out.

    And maybe Mili as well.

    Rgds

  75. rashirons on May 29th, 2007 12:25 am

very well said about the movie….watched it a week bk and had to comment about it….
the movie was shot pretty well…….anurag basu has captured the mood of mumbai when its the very best…during the monsoons…dunno why more movies arent made on this city tho…
watching the movie, just felt like Dharmendra has sumwot forgotten to act or maybe its just me who has bin used to watching him in the “kutte kamine” roles.
but that apart, the inspiration from Head On about the band shown during the movie gelled very well…couldnt feel any sort of discontinuation….
Shiney could have bin given a better role:((
just cant see him do this to himself after sumthing like HKA.

So much for my first post on PFC…have bin watching this website for about a year now…
Anurag when is no Smoking releasin????
waiting for it desperately now that Paanch and Gulal do not seem to be releasing:(

P.S.- how stupid was Mr. Basu to show the label of kli-nol in the scene…will cost him thru defamation..the case has bin referred to a law firm where i am interning by UTV.

  76. Vikas on June 2nd, 2007 3:42 am

Hats off to Anurag Basu for making such a path breakng movie…! There was never a dull moment in there.! Though i feel tht he put a lot of mphasis on sex………..sometime it felt like sex was the only reason for all their probs…!
but neway……..it wasnt far away frm truth……
The performances from everyone was outstanding…..specially Irffan, & konkana,…
    Irrfan almost stole the thunder..!
    The songs were simply mesmerizing….
    The lyrics…….eternal!
    i hav seen d movie twice…. & pretty much admired the movie…..
Its actors easily shrugged of their respecttive personalities.. to mould in to a common man character.
    there weren’t any shilpa’s, irrfan’s , sharman’s & shiney’s.
The movie wasn’t tht bold….but yes..it did talked about tht dark truth…whch everyone avoids..!
D Dialogues & scenes were awefully writen & potrayed.
MUMBAI city was somehow beautifully shown…Specially the one in rains…was somethng…..soothing to watch.

Though d 3 men singing….have brought in a mixed bag of appreciation & crticsm…it wasnt overall a bad thng……..(quite innovative though)

TRRP wasnt tht bad…..but yes a mediocre.

Well anurag…….i luvd ur black friday…..& eagerly awating ur No Smoking..!
    so wen its releasing…….

I do believe metro had potential but i think that whole need to churn out a cliched product ruined it.

I had a problem with the sterotyping of themes and characters.

Fantastic blog. Well written and I wondered how can somebody show dissatisfaction with such an honest blog. I was compelled to read this blog after going through Saturday edition of MID DAY.
Fabulous written and nobody react like that. After that I thought that that couple must be going through some traumatic period, so well done by Kashyap. Have mercy!

  79. neha on June 5th, 2007 12:14 pm

Havent seen METRO yet, but will because I want to see any/all films starring Kay Kay or Konkona or Irfan!

Hey Anurag(Basu), remember I met you in the flight from Korea to Bombay(after you were done shooting for Gangster) and we chatted up about films! Maybe you dont. But am glad to see you are making good films!

Anurag(Kashyap), it is good to see you speak your mind, but all the swearing gets to me! Can you keep it down please??:)

  80. Kay Sayed on June 8th, 2007 10:27 pm

Anurag, your views on Metro & YRF is exactly as mine infact i even have same feelings for most of RK films, i think only their early B/W movies such as Aawara, Shree 420, Jis desh mein etc were something to talk about but the banners biggest hits like Bobby, Satyam…, & Ram teri… were really bad, Satyam… infact i think is among the worse films i’ve ever seen, sex angle in all these films were pathetic & tasteless.
I’m curious to know your views on RK films.

  81. wanderer on June 13th, 2007 9:43 am

I have rarely come across someone dissecting a film so ruthlessly yet with so much admiration for what it is… it was wonderful going through your views…
as for me, I found something very refreshing on Indian screen after a long time… specially because it handled parallel story tracks with such elan & natural fluidity which I think is very rare not only in India but across the global screen… I would say hats off to Anurag Basu…

  82. Sathya on June 14th, 2007 4:21 am

Metro was a movie I watched, hold your breath twice in a week’s time voluntarily with 2 different groups, incidentally both of whom loved it. And yes, obviously I did too. Agree with most of the comments in the intitial blog, however 2 things about the casting. 2 women being type cast:
    1. Kangana as the depressive unsuccessful lover with suicidal tendencies
    2. Konkana as the dumped lover whose love interest always turns out to be gay!

  83. sunil on July 12th, 2007 6:33 am

wow….is what I can say….people have started writing about others’ work as well…Metro is really a film that’s beautifully made…I agree with Anurag Kashyap sir on almost all the grounds which he’s mentioned except the choice of casting Dharam Ji…that was I think not at all a good choice..that’s my opinion, I think no one minds…that’s my take b’cause even the dialogue delivery of Dharam Ji was not up to the mark…Irrfan was wonderful…the way he stares at konkona’s breasts and the way he tells her on the terrace scream and let ur all problems out is actually marvelously done..and question to Mr. Basu remains, as asked by Anurag Kashyap sir, do u really think it before hand…write it in the script…put it in the shot-division etc..or move along and keep shooting whenever it clicks u on the sets…

Sorry for this late read of such an “inspiring” post. What about the Wong Kar-Wai-inspired frames Anurag? Apartment was content. 2046 was technique. The frame where Kay Kay has had another romp with Kangana and is smoking away with Kangana’s legs on his shoulder is the exact copy of a frame from 2046 where Tony Leung’s shoulder is crisscrossed by Zhang Ziyi’s legs as he smokes away. This too was a smooth application but an inspiration all right. But yes, Life in a… Metro remains the best film of the year for me…

  86. Charles Foster Kane aka Antonio Ricci on July 30th, 2007 1:29 am

Sorry, it’s pretty much late to reply to this post. But I couldn’t resist responding to it.

Yes, I LIKED METRO though it was painfully weak at parts.

My question is: Is Life in a METRO only SEXUAL??? Has there been points of OTHER perils experienced by “very ordinary” people?

    Loved Irrfan.

Is it necessary to drag the fooolish Yashraj morons in every post, just as to criticize them. When reviewing a movie, compare it with a movie, not with garbage.

I know, Anurag is going to do something with UTV. Forgive me for my audacity; I may be wrong but it seemed a promotional one. “RS is the only wise man in standing”. Really? The only wise man produces CHUP CHUP KE, HATTRICK? Wisdom? Hm..Then again, I must not forget RDB, KKG, NAMESAKE, MMPAW.

Just a thought, no offece meant.

  87. Ruchi on July 31st, 2007 11:12 pm

    10. Why is it that KK always picks roles that tests his range rather than his popularity..he excels all the time but someone always walks away with the limelight?
Hope Honeymoon Travels has somewhat broken the chain since Deewar,Hazaron Khwaishen,Sarkaar n Metro.

Btw I think one point that may have possibly influenced Shilpa’s decision to go with Kay Kay is that Shiney didn’t have a financially secure life as Kay Kay.Hee hee.Maybe because of the influence of METRO she took a materialistic decision.

Anyways I was very happy for Kay Kay.Call me biased but all’s well that ends well for Kay Kay.

  88. Gaurav Goenka on August 11th, 2007 11:13 pm

    Very True Anurag Sir..
Metro is really a remarkable film..such movies come as a breath of fresh air.. and honestly i agree with you when u say that all these journalists are biased!!

  89. random on August 15th, 2007 10:42 am

liked metro.though hated the chauvinistic end.married shilpa goes back to husband, ‘good married’ woman that she is.plus the stereotypical portrayal of homosexuals.and yet, compared to the other trash, definitely one of the better films.

  90. Mohican on August 15th, 2007 12:03 pm

Saw Metro and… enjoyed it thoroughly!! Actually, I love any film that has Bombay as a backdrop. This one had Bombay in the monsoon, couldn’t ask for more :-)
Metro made me feel nostalgic- the fact that I left India many years ago just about when things started getting into the fast lane always bothered me a lot!
I left the theatre with a tiny salty tear hanging at the corner of my eye.
Anurag B: Thanks for making an excellent movie.
Anurag K: Thanks for the superb review.
    You guys rocks!

  91. gangolu on September 16th, 2007 10:34 am

METRO is one excellent movie from Bollywood every one should proved of. It directly goes to my personal DVD library ( yet to buy :) ).

I think following two things might have given a second thought in that movie.

    1. The shot where Kokona confronts his boyfriend having sex with his boss; the poster of “Brokeback Mountain” was deliberately put in back ground. I dint understand the significance of it. I felt i puts a satire view on the situation, which i don’t think was the directors intention. I felt it like clinch.

    2. The way Kokona confronts his boyfriends secret life is ditto copy from PAGE3 . even her expressions were more or less same. Common you can do better than that :)

Having said that METRO is GREAT movie.

    ^:)^ ^:)^ ^:)^

    12. why couldn’t I write a scene construction like “who gaadi tab nikalega jab saare signal green ho jaayenge”.. I envy you sanjib data..

Yeah I envy the guy who wrote it first when making “Meet the fockers” .. Sheesh !
