Rang Rasiya : Colors from the life of Raja Ravi Varma

Ketan Mehta has captured the colorful world of Raja Ravi Varma in his latest film Rang Rasiya.
A biographer documents the life of his subject.
An art critic/historian explores the artistic creations of an artist.
A novelist may explore deeply the moments of the life of an artist.
Hopefully Rang Rasiya , based on Ranjit Desai’s novel, does full justice to the different aspects of the vivid life of Raja Ravi Varma.
What looks attractive within the boundaries of aesthetic sense in literature may come under the definition of Exposure if shown in a film.
So let us wait and watch if Ketan Mehta has been able to manage in maintaining a fine balance among various aspects of life of one of the most famous Indian painters of last 2 centuries.

Thanks for talking about this movie. I am so anxiously waiting for this Ketan Mehta movie who seems so out of his elements. This movie may prove whether his first three or four movies were a fluke, or the last three or four.
One thing is for sure .. whatever the fate of the movie … the music sure sounds promising.
whew…the longest trailer ever!….when is it releasing?
In last 1 year it has been screened at few film festivals.
WOW!!! wow wow!!! this has to get a release on the big screens.
Ketan Mehta is a master. His mastery over the visuals is striking. Wish he was allowed to chose better lead actors. They mar the stunning visuals for me. But they do not dampen my enthusiasm enough to want to watch this play of colors. Ketan needs to make more films.
BTW I live near Raja Ravi Verma’s printing press. Stunning property that is up for sale – approx Rs. 35 cr.
Exactly. None of the obvious shortcomings kills the desire to watch it on big screen as there are so many attractions of historical values. Ketan factor is there.
Unfortunately, Ketan also has the MANGAL PANDEY factor. MANGAL PANDEY was so potently horrible that it wiped out all his previous terrific credentials.
Hey there’s something about period films. While you need to take care that no modern object has been captured by the camera, it also throws upon a lot of creative opportunities to be able to present people, relationships, objects, etc
Was floored when the Goddesses were painted using Nandana’s face (esp Saraswati’s).
Just hope that the movie is not long
That ‘Dhoom’ (or ‘Cash’) style opening shot (as he is about to turn)spoiled the expectations to a great extent. And even the music is a bit too beat-driven to be called authentic.
Just some of the images are good…and about the lead actors, well, the less said the better.
And even a 6 minute promo didn’t have a concept, theme or any clear indications as to where this film is headed. Very disappointing.
But it did. It seems to travel from introducing the genius of Ravi Verma, to his inspiration and muse, then his concept of drawing goddesses where he runs into trouble and his muse into more trouble.
agreed on your comment on the opening shot for the trailor. and i find it overall unengaging…
thats what you call a grab you by the balls trailer..
Wow. this promises to be a delightful and epic visual journey. looking forward to watch it on the big screen.
@ hansal, sir that must be really something indeed (the printing press).
good one though a tad too long for a promo…great visuals…what amused me most was to see Tom Alter as the judge…even after so many years he still remains the first choice for an englishman in our films especially when the film is set in that era.
Sudip,
1-3 minutes long trailers are also available.
epecting to be good, hot and wild. i hope story is well justified. Varma was a great painter.
Thats a gorgeous trailer!! Only lacuna was that the male lead seems to not possess much acting skills..had watched him in D and he did OK, but here he looks totally wooden throughout, seriously hampering the beauty of the otherwise wonderful trailer. More power to Ketan Mehta and his ilk.
.
Havent seen much of KM’s films, but i think Mirch Masala was his film and it was totally fantastic. Rising deserved its fate though.
Rolf,
Bhavni Bhavai and Mirch Masala are two illustrious works of Ketna Mehta.
Sardar, Maya Memsaab and to some extent Mangal Pande also, lie somewhere in the Middle as he has tried his hands on commercial films also like Hero Hiralal, O Darling Ye hai India, Aar ya Paar.
His works at TV for DD, Holi and Mr Yogi, were also good.
Randeep Hooda had got a good opening in films through Monsoon Wedding.
Afterwards he has been giving some average type performances in thrillers.
Recently saw him in Love Khichadee and he looked good in that film. Perhaps such characters suit him more.
Rang Rasiya is kind of once in a life time opportunity for him. Let us see if he has enjoyed this opportunity conpletely or not.
Trailer of Jodha Akbar had not projected Hritik as a good Akbar but after watching the film he looked quite good in the role. Hritik’s job definetely was tough as in case of Akbar people already had an impression of Prithvi Raj Kapoor’s akbar from Mughal-e-Azam. So Trailer was not working in favour of Hritik Roshan.
Randeep Hodda has a benefit that people don’t have a prior cinematic image of Ravi Varma. Maybe RH also has worked hard in an appropriate manner in the role of Raja Ravi Varma. This will be known after watching the full film.
could ve been a engrossing trailer only if they hadnt hhad the need for all the love making scenes… it just takes away from the movie a lot… much wider than how Hey Ram trailers were were marred by KH having a biteful of Rani … m mean why need them so badly..and if needed also, why pay so much of homage to them even in trailers?….
@PS hey, rang rasiya w/o love will appear a bit odd. yeah, its necessary to shed clothes for that. But thats the only thing that our makers learnt with gr8 zeal.
true.. rang rasiya will need to have scenes with nudity, absolutely… lekin yaar when you spend like 30 sec of a trailer showing the love making scenes, which also dont seem to be all that aesthetically shot… it takes away a lot from the movie… my point is showing RRV as the bigger subject even in the poster than shoing Randeep and Nandana Sen in the poster in itself somewhere gives it the conservative approach like sex sells kinds…
point, is that how u show the stuff is really important. Look out for Nandana
