Rare gems of Gulzar

One of my friends believes that poetry is the master of all art and if it is created by Gulzar then it automatically drives us in a different world. Though Gulzar’s poetry has been released in various forms and are mostly sung by Jagjit Singh, still there are some in which Gulzar has recited his own poetries. “Udaas Paani” is such an album in which there are eight musical tracks which are weaved into the recitation of Gulzar’s poetry. Abhishek Ray has done the music. The album has some amazing poems. One of them is called “ek nazm” which goes like.
nazm uljhi hui hai seene me
misre atke hue hain seene me
lafz kaghaz par baithte hi nahi
udte firte hain titliyon ki terah
kab se baitha hoon jaanam
sade kaghaz pe likhke naam tera
bas tera naam hi mukkammal hai
isse behtar bhi nazm kya hogi
The other one is called “alaav” from the same album
raat bhar sard hawa chalti rahi
raat bhar humne alaav taapa
Maine maazi se kai khushk see shaakhien kaati
Tumne bhi gujre hue lamhon ke patte tode
Meine jebon se nikali sabhi sukhi nazme
Tumne bhi haathon se murjhaaye hue khat khole
Apnee in aankhon se meine kai maanze tode
Aur haathon se kai baasi lakeeren phenki
Tumne palkon pe nami sookh gayee thee, so gira di
Raat bhar jo bhi mila ugte badan par humko
Kaat ke daal diya jalte alaavon main use
Raat bhar phoonkon se har lau ko jagaye rakha
Aur do zismon ke indhan ko jalaye rakha
Raat bhar bujhte hue rishte ko taapa humne
This album again talks about the relationships…the moments…the memories everything but the metaphor used in the poetries are so melodious. Something abstract..could be in incoherent but still sounds beautiful The other album is “Kab aate ho”
The first track is “Baarish” which starts like der tak dono ne baarish dekhi and the other track has line ” Kuchh aisi ehtiyaat se nikla hai aaj chaand aaj jaise andheri raat me khidki pe ho tum ..kya chaand aur zami me bhi koi khinchaav hai..”
The other track is “Rozgaar ke silsile”.A poet feels whenever he goes to his old town where his beloved used to be. He is now stranger to the place but still remember his love seeing the pole which has witnessed the past. see how he has used the image of the pole.
“main rozgar ke silsile me kabhi kabhi uske shaher jaata hoon to uski gali se gujarta hoon wo neem taareekh si gali aur usi ke nukkad par ugta sa purana khambha bahut si khasta si roshni deta wo khambhas wahi khada hai ab bhi ….fitur hai ye magar main khanbhe ke paas jaakar pooch leta hoon aaj bhi ye ki mere aane ke baad wo aayi to nahi thi…left the reader speechless.
Vishal and Gulzar has again teamed up and made an album called “Budhe Pahadon par” around 97 but due to the lack of publicity it could not become popular. This album’s title song revolves around the terrorism in Kashmir
This song has chorus and sung by Suresh Wadekar and Gulzar’s recitation is blended beautifully.
listen the song
09-boodhe-pahadon-par
“in budhe pahadon par kuchh to nahi badla
sadiyon se giri barfen aur unpe barasti hain har saal nayi barfen
ghar lagte hain kabron se khamosh safedi me qutbe se darakhton ke
har saal chanaron me ek aag ke jalne se marte hain hazaron me
in budhe pahadon par kuchh bhi to nahi badla
naani ki agar mane to bhediya abhi zinda hai jaayengi abhi kitni jaane
The last line shows that how deeply he feels for the terrorism.
This album has another song called “mujhko itne se kaam me rakh lo”…It’s a different romantic poetry .. it’s a very carefully written poem
“mujhko itnse se kaam me rakh lo seene par jhoolta locket jab bhi ulta ho jaaye to main haathon se seedha karta rahu usko..

post araam se padhoonga. par tujhme himmat hai. pavansaab ke rehte koi gulzar par kuch likhne ki himmat juta le…kya baat hai. dobara chcek kar lena..kahin kuch galat to nahi likha.
Boodhe pahaadon par remains, one of my most favourite non film albums. everything about it is just superb.
Dipankar,
“Udaas Paani” was indeed a very special album post which Abhishek Ray and Gulzar did “Raat Chaand Aur Main” which I found very disappointing.
I disagree when you say that Gulzar’s most poetries are sung by Jagjit Singh. Apart from “Marasim”(great) and “Koi Baat Chale”(mediocre), I don’t know what kind of stuff they did together.
Also, if you are really interested in rare gems of Gulzar non-film poetries/songs, you should check out “Woh Jo Shayar Tha” that he did with Bhupinder. “Sunset Point” I reckon is already very popular so won’t call it rare. In films, some of the rare gems which right now I could think of would be “Aastha”,”Raincoat” and “Maqbool”

‘Woh Jo Ek Shair Tha’ was terrific. My father had an LP of that album, and it was my first tryst with the poet’s non-filmy creations..
Infact ‘ek nazm’ -mentioned above…is a part of ‘Woh jo shayar tha’, composed and sung by bhupinder…’Yaar Julahe’ which was recited by gulzar in Marasim was composed by vishal and sung by suresh vadkar in ‘Budhe pahado par’…’Is mod se jaate hai’ the original nazm was a part of ‘Woh jo shayar tha’(i like it better than the song)…for those who havent heard the gulzar’s recitation in his tribute to pancham…its worth listening to…i think “mujhko itnse se kaam me rakh lo” mentioned above is gulzar’s most underrated song…plz listen to it if u havent…its absolutely amaizing- it defines real romance…”dil padausi hai” has some of his greatest of works…listen to ‘majhi re majhi’…’koi diya jale kahi’…’raat christmas ki thi’…u can listen to these songs for eternity, I think ‘Cosmos song’ written by gulzar is an exceptional experiment of poetry (album-fir subah hogi- amjad ali khan)…gulzar’s contribution to non film albums dates back as long as we can remember
sorry…for ‘Cosmos song’ – album’s came out with the title ‘Vaada’…it was previously titles ’subaha saans legi’
some more really really rare gems
chalo naa bhataken
lafange kuuchon mein
luchchii galiyon ke
chowk dekhen
sunaa hai vo log
chuus kar jin ko vaqt ne
raasten mein phenkaa tha
sab yahiin aake bas gaye hain
yeh chhilake hain zindagii ke
in kaa ark nikaalo
ki zahar in kaa
tumhare jismon men
zahar palate hain
aur jitane vo maar degaa
chalo naa bhatken
lafange kuuchon mein
(This poem was written by Gulzar in one of his journeys to Nasik from Mumbai(Bombay), in the blank spaces of `Times Of India’, the only piece of paper available at that moment. This poem and incident was published in a Marathi newspaper `Maharashtra Times’ on 3rd January, 1999. )
Ahmed Faraz has written something similar
dhoondh ujde hue logon me vafa ke moti
mumkin hai tumhe ya khajaane kharaabon me mile
The other one is
main apne ghar mein hi ajanbi ho gayaa hoon aa kar
mujhe yahaan dekhakar meri ruuh dar gayi hai
saham ke sab aarazuuen konon men jaa chhupii hain
laven bujhaa di hain apane cheharon ki, hasaraton ne
ki shauq pahachanataa hi nahin
muraaden dahleez hi pe sar rakh ke mar gai hain
main kis vatan ki talaash mein yun chalaa thaa ghar se
ki apane ghar mein bhii ajanabi ho gayaa hoon aa kar
and the most interesting is
mobile sachmuch kitnaa mobile hai
ek kaan pe daftar pahna hai,
aur dooje par
ghar rakkha hai -
saare kaam main
daaen kaan se karataa hoon
aur baakee ghar ke baaen se
daaen kaan se manager ne pakadaa
khaanaa khaate hue
ek jarooree khat hai sir
garage se ek phone aayaa
phir daaen kaan pe -
cluch plate sir, Toot gai hai-
carborator mein kacharaa thaa-
baaen kaan pe beep huee
biwi se kahaa ke hold karo
voh newyork se bol rahee thee-
sar jod ke baithee auraton mein, jab
koi bachchaa roye to
Chhaatee se lagaa ke uski maan,
kuchh der alag hat jaati hai-
kuchh aise hi meeting mein..
mobile kaan pe rakh ke koi
meeting se uth jaataa hai
ik mayyat par dekhaa,
kaan lagaaye koi,
saragoshee mein bol rahaa thaa
shaayad poochh rahaa ho
kis farishte se
gayaa hai jo, pahuncha ke nahin?
ek hidaayat baar-baar
ik number par aa jaatee hai
‘out of reach’ hai,
baad mein koshish karake dekhen,
ye nunber shaayad unakaa hai
…baDe miyaaN kaa!
Dipankar,
The locket song is coming back this year… in a film tentitively titled “SRK”.. and this time composed by none other than Maestro Illaiyaraja and sung by Roop Kumar Rathod.. Watch out for it..
most of above should not be counted as “rare” gems (though the definition of rare can vary from person to person).. but many of these were published recently in his poetry collections (or the albums are easily available (barring boodhe pahadon par.. what an album sirji!))
The “mobile” nazm is part of his forthcoming collection titled “paaji nazmein”.. and all the nazms are as interesting as the title of the collection..
really a very informative post….
