Realism is all bullshit..

There are reasons probably why they refer to Sunday as “God’s day”. Its Sundays like the last one that reaffrims my belief in such universal connotations and references.

Sony Pix had two Scorsese movies on offer. Its been a while since i have visited them, and revisiting them was definetely an experience to say the least.
“Raging Bull” and “Taxi Driver” played itself on my box and i marvelled. My jaws dropped yet again. Someone could have slapped me back then and i wouldnt have retaliated in fear of having to lose the magic of two of most marvellous pieces of “human psyche invasions” to have unravelled itself on screen

I wouldn’t detail a review of those two movies here, cos i really dont enjoy reviewing. But for that moment in time and forward, i realised that cinema could actually be more than what we think it is capable of. Philosophical and spiritual undertones started to take shape…. suddenly

That then led me into analysing this word that we so often use randomly and oft carelessly. Realism. “Realistic movies”. Load of shit. Trust me, there is nothing like realism. Realism is often relative because it is so time and space dependent. But emotions arent, situations arent.
For me as i see it today a good creative piece is all about establishing a “sense of truth”. You could take the most fairy-talesque story and yet instill in it a “sense of truth”. In Travis Bickle and Jake La Motta i saw no trace of me, but these characters connected. And, like in the case of any great piece of creative work it was because they were drenched in situations and tales of irony that hold a sense of universal acceptance.
One the story of a hard as nuts character in exterior, full of desperation and lack of belief about himself, life for whom is all about using a sport that he excels in to punish himself for the faults he commits in his real life and judgements he makes.
Another a tale of “urban alienation”, about a person in search of achieving a purpose for his otherwise listless life.

Call me philosophical here, but as you grow up your wants from what your are offered, surge too. Today i beleive i have come to a point where i can appreciate a creative piece only if it supplements the kind of philosophical and spiritual growth that i have had in time.
Which brings me back to where in started off, Realism is pure bullshit. It is all about establishing a sense of truth in whatever you do creatively.
Its that degree of distinction that some gr8 creative pieces acheive that sets them apart from the others.
Which is precisely why i believe “Seinfeld is the work of pure genius” and why it shouldnt be compared to some other cookie-cutter sitcoms we get to watch around us. It is precisely why i believe “Scarface is a tad overrated” . It is also, hinging on the same theory that i consider “Chashme Buddoor to be quite an underated gem when compared to another oft-discussed work called Jaane bhi do Yaaron”…
I know this is a random piece of writing. Call me crazy here. You might think i am almost bordering on insanity. Few who know me well might picture a drunken guy fiddling with his keyboard. But cast a thought for that involuntary applause that you have once let-out for a piece of creative work and trace back its origin.Follow it trail. And, if you get to the end of it, you might just be able to unearth a sense of connection here..

and that’s why I love what you write… it isn’t about reality… it’s reflection… nothing between you and that image on screen… nothing at all.

    Well Karthik,
all i meant to say was that realism for me is quite ambience-specific, a very casual reference-point of sorts.. maybe its like i have said all abt establishing a sense of truth.. i might not know the exact nomenclature of that entity or the various components that make it.. but all i know is it doesnt know its characters, but it communicates to u thru the various situations that make it possible..it makes u think, make u theorize and if u have experienced what i have, it can just make u wanna write. it gives u this feeling that every thing u observe intently in your life, can be a source of literature and rational philosophy..

    Vinayak,
Jake La Motta completely lacerates a supposedly good-looking opponent’s face and gives his wife a saddistic smirk… i donno any of the entities that make that scene, but still the emotion connects… it aint abt instant gratification then.. it becomes a matter of experiencing, doesnt it??
jerry asks kramer, abt how come his previously celebed gf made out with him.. and kramer goes,”oh,because i snubbed her”… that situation isnt just abt a funny sequence then.. i have never laughed at it.. but it brings out truth.. a very dsitinct truth maybe, but it does..
