Red Cliff is movie with real heroes. they are neither bad ass nor sissy. they are real man. rock solid and yet well behaved. vintage john woo. movie is based on chinese history. some of the heroes are still worshiped in china.
cao cao is the prime minister of china. totally on the control of affairs as a weak and young emperor is a puppet in his hands. army is under his command. he forced the emperor to give him the permission to pursue liu bie. liu bie is a brave and good general. because of this some great warrirors are fighting under his command. but the number is not in his favor. as his army is less than cao cao’s. after attack from cao cao, liu bie has to evacuate his city and move the people to some other safe place.
liu bie’s genral is general yun. general yun learns that liu bie’s wife and his heir are still in the village. general yun runs to rescue the lady the heir. and here come the first battle sequence. great. i would say nothing else. you better see it for yourself. general yun saves liu bie’s heir. liu bie is worried about the safety of his people. as cao cao’s army is coming closer and closer. liu bie’s strategist (takeshi kaneshiro) comes with the plan. plan is general yu. another great warrior. another great battle sequence.
after successfully avoiding the prime ministers army all these men are having discussion about the further action. strategist comes with the idea that they should form an alliance with the ruler of western region sun quan. and for this purpose strategist liang embarks on the journey. sun quan is still young and unsure about his capabilities as a ruler. liang first approach to quan’s most trusted adviser general zhou yu (tony leung). zhou yu is as skillful in music as in war strategy. both together convince quan to form the alliance with liu bie against common enemy cao cao.
two forces are facing each other at the red cliff. from where movie derives its name. after first interplay of the strategies both armies prepare for the next big show down. which you will see in the next movie. red cliff is in two parts. second part is yet to be released.
movie is filled with beautiful imagery. its not all about war and marching soldiers. there are only two war scenes and they are so beautiful that you wish there were some more. but light scenes are equally beautiful. like general yu teaching children. sister of quan showing her skill in acupuncture. strategist lian and genral zhou comunicating through music playing chinese harp. cinematography is enchanting. very beautiful movie . what to say about the acting every actor gels with the role. and yes pigeons are there near the climax.

Great post, been wanting to watch this movie. I like John Woo’s HK-Chinese movies, more than his Hollywood flicks. I did hear a lot about Red Cliff, and am really dying to see it. Woo’s movies always have a beautiful imagery, but if you factor in the Chinese historical background, it would be even more vivid here.
