Remake Season Kicks Off
Some of my friends saw Don (2006) yesterday and they found it awesome. But those views of my friends won’t enforce me to watch the movie this weekend or in near future. Only my cousins or friends will be able to drag me to a cinema to watch the movie. For two reasons, I won’t be watching Don 2006 are, I never liked the original Don and I am not a big fan of this kind of cinema.
I saw Amitabh Bachchan’s Don a year ago and that was my first time. I forwarded a lot of scenes; that means, I did not get into the movie. I don’t think it’s to do with me being ‘aaj ka launda’. It’s just I have a different taste in Hindi Cinema. If I was to watch the movie again I would finish watching the movie in half an hour. It would be less than that time if was going to forward a couple of songs I like. When I like a movie; I remember everything about the movie, however, I don’t remember anything about this particular movie. Therefore, I cannot even review the movie properly. It is not that I hate everything about the movie. It is just that I do not like anything about the movie.
Let’s now talk about Don 2006. My friends were in awe of the special affects/action scenes after watching SRK’s Don. They even think that SRK has done a brilliant job. She said, “Don’t go and see it with 1970’s spectacles on this as it is defintely a film of the 21st century!” Yeah but, how can you get rid of the gay look of SRK in the film, huh? Still, I would not watch it. Don 2006 is a masala film with a bit of Bond style into the mix. Nothing new, it has been explore before.
Only remake I would watch is RGV’s version of Sholay. And that is only because I am a fan of RGV not Sholay.
Call me a freak or whatever, but that is….

Are u a fan of any of Farhan’s previous work?
It’s a film about the underworld and glamour…… I do think it’s AWSOME not just awesome Honhaar, and I’d say it’s am excellent film. It has appeal to an international audience not just followers of hindi films/bollywood.
Farhan’s going to go far…. Maybe he’ll be asked to go and direct a hollywood film?
See I was right .. I knew you wouldn’t watch this and if you do then I can pretty much gurantee your reaction!
You should watch something then dismiss it? critical dismissal at least?
Maybe the “gay SRK look” goes with the movie – we’ve just seen promo’s so give it the benefit of doubt?
I watched the classic version last night and yeah i fwd many scenes, it was the typical formula that worked in those days but still a great movie for it’s time. No doubt Farhan would have done a magnificant job, i don’t doubt that for a minute. He is a promising director and with the modern technology todays Don will be fitting for teh audience of today. Diversity is what this industry needs.
“Don 2006 is a masala film with a bit of Bond style into the mix”
I agree. But it’s done with style.
Had another director announced they were remaking Don – most of us would have cringed. I’m glad teh remake went into worth hands.
Oh and talking of remakes Umrao Jaan is something I won’t bother .. it was boring the first time round!
Stop playing on the computer and do your homework!!
i saw don yesterday and i would say it’s a good film.i would urge everyone not to compare it with the original and you would enjoy it immensely.
International Audience? Next you would be saying it’s got potential to win Oscars! Please don’t kid with me!
I would not say I am a fan of Farhan Akthar, but I did enjoy his DCH and a bit of Lakshay.
San, this is my theory, if my sixth sense tells me that the movie is going to be crap, then I don’t need to watch it to clarify that. And I cannot stand watching certain types of movies.. i just go completely mad.
Honhaar (i want to use your real name)
OIf we have already convinced ourself that this movie isn’t something we like then this opinion *rarely* changes.
However even I like a certain type of movie but I still give credit where it’s due. Not teh greatest fan of SRK but Farhan’s work is commendable and that’s the reason I’ll be watching it. You don’t always have to like the performances in order to like the movie.
You and I are going to the pictures and i will force you to watch some bakwaas movie with me just to watch you cringe all the way through ;)
Rony – it’s inevitable that comparisons will be made. It’s a remake so yes people who have seen the golden oldie will look back and compare but many youngsters probably haven’t even seen let alone heard of the older Don. Threfor for them it will be a new experience and to them it’s also a coming to age movie (Bond Style)
Problem is most things note i say MOST things are always better the first time around, not saying tehy are rubbish the second time but its difficult to beat the first time as it’s already been done.
Although the new Don has seen dramatic changes – time and technology rocks
Sangeeta – i am a great fan of mr.bachchan’s don & i happen to interview srk where we happen to talk about don so i have a biased kinda view towards it because i think i understand why farhan or shahrukh made the film in it’s first place.i completely agree that comparison are inevitable but there can be different ways to compare the film.right now i am hearing rave reviews about jannemann & bad reviews of don.i thin our audience cannot digest remakes unlike hollywood.
Honhaar – sorry for sayin this but i think before you blog i think you should attend a course in film appreciation . i dont see any passion for cinema in what you write.
Disagree. Bhoot was a remake of ‘Raat’ and the former did better business than latter. Raja Hindustani was sort of remake of Jab Jab Phool Khile. And it worked..
Rony,
Oh you interviewed Farhan? that’s great – care to provide us with some insight into the interview?
I actually got a channce to ask Farhan and Ritesh some questions when they were guests on the BBC Asian Network station.
thats my claim to fame!
I understand what you’re saying, and i think audiences are always split. Some people will genuinely compare whereas others (a lil like myself) will dismiss the movie due to the type of movie it is. Biased opinions are often formed before a movie releases.
However i still think Farhan’s work shows promise and critics and audiences will appreciate that
Taking of radio – I’m due on air today to do a Khan Vs Khan battle!! hahah I’m going to explain why SRK is better then Salman? errm
Re passion for cinmea – I think Honhaar has a certain passion for certain types of movies, but agreed this post should be about remakes in general it’s not a review as such.
The New Don is just so SLICK
Sangeeta – i interviewed shahrukh not farhan.regarding you radio thingy. salman is turning out to be one up on srk.jaanemann is fethching good reviews
Oh SRK ey
so give some insight into his interview.. I am doing all my research now before i go on the show this eveing :o
But hits are all very well can Salman perform better then SRK? in all honesty I dont really like SRK that much, not a fan but i think they guy is exceptional in majority of his movies.
the original don for me was a timepass flick.. an enjoyable watch, but nothing so amazing that it makes me want to scream to the world. and seeing as how i only watched this movie a few yrs back (i didn’t have the luxury of watching movies growing up.. doordarshan was my friend), it was still cool to see a bond-esque type film with typical 70s-style car chases and shot sequences, with AB doing what AB does best. entertain. and i left it at that.
farhan’s don may end up being a theater watch, if my friends or family drag me to it.. and i’d be watching it only for farhan. definitely not srk.
exactly – it was a timepass flick and a film that i would not feel like watching it over and over.
i only bought the dvd because it was on sale, otherwise i would have never bought it.
hmm it was on sale so you purchased it
That’s saying something about you – you’d still buy cack if you didn’t like it!
More movies are in the pipeline and most of them happen to be Bachchan movies…people are out to remake Satte Pe Satta and Bombay To Goa as well.
Guys,
Bottom line is that the remakes will fetch more money and audience because people will be curious to see and compare the movies. It is a better idea for these producers to make remakes rather then all these new movies that are off the screen the first weekend.. remakes atleast gets the audience to the theateres..
