I was one of the lucky chaps to be attending the pre release screening of the Tarantino’s much awaited WW11 epic followed by Q n A with Eli Roth at USC Film School. The film began with the usual yellow colored fonts (Tarantino Estyle) and started with Chapter 1. Now whoever said that the film was all talky is right, it is very talky but then that is what we love about Tarantino, the dialogues, blood, the violence and what have you!
The film opens with a long talky scene introducing “The Jew Hunter” Col Hans Landa of the German Army and why he hates Jews (Tarantino at his dialogue best). This scene reminds me of the opening scene in The Good The Bad The Ugly where Lee Van Cleef is introduced only here the dialogues are funny and yet there is an undercurrent of tension. In the end the French Farmer gives away the whereabouts of the Jewish family he is hiding successfully for years.
We are now introduced to a heavily accented American, Lt Aldo Raine and his band of rogue soldiers called ….( u guessed it right). We hear/see the gang and it’s brutality, again the dialogues are funny and keeps u entertained. It makes you feel good to see someone killing Nazis and installing fear in their ranks. The audience loves every member of the Basterds and keep cheering at their exploits. The story of the Basterds is intercut with the story Shosanna Dreyfus, a disguised Jewish girl who owns a small cinema hall in Paris. A German war hero, now a leading actor in a film made on his real life falls in love with her. The premier of his much awaited war propaganda film “Nation’s Pride” is to be held in this small cinema hall of Paris attended by all the big names of German army including Hitler.
The British Intelligence Agency now sends it’s own agent, a film critic of German cinema in pre occupied France, to be part of the premier. The story becomes like a discussion on the history of European Films. Although interesting, some folks might find it boring. Through a nice twist of fate the British agent is killed and Basterds decide to enter the premier posing as Italian camera crew accompanied by a German actress. Although the story is serious and is tensed yet the dialogues are funny throughout and has a funny take on Italian names. The Nazis know of the actresses’ alliances and hence Brad Pitt is apprehended. The cinema owner (the Jewish girl) has an elaborate plan to blow up her own theatre and the Basterds are there to blow it up too. This leads to the climax of the film Tarantino couldn’t write for years. It is an end that truly separates the film from any WW11 movie ever made. It really ends well and everyone in the audience is pleasantly surprised at the ending.
The music of the film is as good as any Tarantino film the look of the film is very French with the light and camera angles even the end credits rolls in an old fashion. The film is a must watch although I have to say it was long for some people especially in the middle when it became a lecture on european film history but who cares it’s a Tarantino Film!!!

P.S. I hate the concept of quantifying a film based on star rating …so no stars in my review. I loved it and I recommend it!

Nikhil, you are lucky to have seen the film so early. I had read an old version of the film’s script, which is available on the net, and I loved it. You are absolutely correct to say that the climax of the film differentiates from the other WW2 movies. Probably, it is the first WW2 film of its kind. The film should not be described as a “talkie”; dialogues form the soul of the film. In fact Tarantino films are always known for their dialogues and music, remember Pulp Fiction. After reading the film’s script, I fell in love with the character of Col. Hans Landa. He’s the one to watch out for and I can’t wait to watch him on the silver screen.

Credit that it’s a Tarantino film doesn’t really qualify alone any more.! Death proof was the last one I saw and it was as terrible as his other co-directions with Rodriguez. But then there is pulp fiction.there is the reservoir dogs.there is the wolf and there is Mr blonde with stuck in the middle with u. so I am looking fwd to the QT movie…will see it soon.
