Reviews from Anti Review Land
It must be a irony that after bitching about too many reviews on PFC I’m writing a review. But then i thought WTF lemme just write reviews how i would like them to be for me. Brief & to the point. I’m here to share my feelings about certain films & not show off my vocabulary(OZ is an exception to this rule…his reviews are fun to read). So I’m gonna write 3 film reviews in one go. there by using the same space for 3 movies instead of one.
THE WEATHERMAN Director - Gore Verbinski
I had this DVD for past 6 months lying around but never got around to watching it. Finally saw it last night & really liked it. This must be the best Nicolas Cage movie I have seen in last 5 years. Honestly I don’t like him at all anomore. More so because I feel he has betrayed the kinda of film he used to do & has become a straight on Blockbuster star. Weatherman reminded me of AMERICAN BEAUTY. Both movies are about mid life crisis. I think this is almost a sub genre in America now where a Middle Aged guy goes through profound spiritual, emotional & sometimes sexual epiphany. And I love this genre. Its a sign of a mature & advanced society where people stop & introspect their life only realize what a fuck up they have been all their life. I hardly see that happening in our society( reasons are a lot & needs to be addressed in another place & time). Hence no such movies. I’m digressing. I should be writing about the movie. Right? Wrong! I should be writing about my feelings after having watched the film. The things the movie made me think & feel. Instead of explaining the plot in 300 words. If someone recommends a movie & I’m interested I google it & get the plot. Plus the movie was essentially about parenting. About Cage’s relationship with his family & his own father played by Michael Caine. Caine is probably the best thing in the film for me. He is a writer of the old school & doesn’t understand the language(slang) his son & grankids use all the time. Its hilarious. By the end of the movie & his life, he gives his son some profound advice in their own language -
This shit life. …we must chuck some things. We must chuck them …in this shit life.
There’s always looking after. You have time son.
Don’t get me wrong. Its not some masterpiece. Its a small personal movie a mans acceptance of life as it is. The reason I liked it so much was also because I had no expectation from it (mainly because of cage). Its always very cleverly shot. Beautiful simple shots. Chicago in winter. The movie ends brilliantly. So i will just copy paste that part of the movie. And i found them to be very profound.
I remember once….imagining what my life would be like, what I’d be like.
I pictured having all these qualities.
Strong, positive qualities, that people could pick up on from across a room.
But as time passed, few ever became any qualities I actually had.
And all the possibilities I faced, and the sorts of people I could be, all of them got reduced every year to fewer and fewer…
…until finally they got reduced to one……to who I am.
And that’s who I am…The Weatherman.

MEMORIES OF MURDER(Salinui chueok) Director - Joon-ho Bong
For those of you who have read my comments on other articles, you already know how much i loved this movie. For those who have not, its a must watch film. I’m not a big fan of serial killer movies. Even SE7EN bored me. The only serial killer movie I liked was probably what I consider to be SPIKE LEE’s best film so far - SUMMER OF SAM. But that movie was about the time & place & other people rather than a thriller. This one is an out n out thriller from the 1st scene. But it is done brilliantly. Kang-ho Song gives another mindblowing performance. The movie is about the 1st case of serial killings in South Korea. It also is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. Bong has mixed the humor & the thrill so perfectly that you are laughing at some really sad things. If not for anything its a must watch just for 1 scene in the middle of the movie. I think it is one of the best scenes I have seen in last 3-4 years. Its that good. Its the midnight chase scene between a suspect & 3 cops (who are unaware of each others presence) which ends hilariously in the factory. This was the best movie I saw last year.

IRREVERSIBLE Director - Gaspar Noé
I wanted to watch this film 4 years back I think. I cant believe it took me this long. Usually such a long wait can disappoint you as the hype keeps going up. But not this one. The HYPE IS RIGHT. I consider myself pretty desensitized as far as movie violence goes. But I had never expected something like this. This has to be one of the most shocking & raw film I have seen recently. Unlike most such films which are shocking for the sake of it, this film is much more than that. The movie goes backwards in time & it was much before MEMENTO was made. The acting by all the actors is great. Monica Belluci, Vincent Cassel & Albert Dupontel are great. The start of the movie in RECTUm was a bit too long for me. It can get nauseating if seen on big screen in a dark theater. The Fire Extinguisher scene is pretty nasty. I could not believe what i was watching. But as the movie goes back into the night we see how beautiful the night had started for these 3 people. And it works beautifully. I loved the conversation between the 3 of them in the subway.
So there goes 3 movies i liked recently. And my article of this month for OZ. ![]()

Thanks mainak .. need to kick my ass and watch these three movies.
Actually ur right, mid life crisis - hmmm i think Dombivali fast was loosely on mid life crisis. Salaam-e-ishq’s Anil kapoor/Juhi chawla story (really long shot this) … and the other one i remember of the top of my head is 36 chowringee lane.
Heheh Memories - was highly highly reccommended by anurag kashyap. He loved that one. Now so did u. Another reason for me to kick up my ass.
Nicholas cage is GOD for me - despite stupid films like the National Treasure, Ghostrider.
And Really … is irrevirsible that kool ??
And by the way - if u’ve seen memento and irreversible, go watch Peppermint Candy !!!
Irreversible is awesome…Weak Hearts stay away!!!!
Irreversible is AWESOME Kartik. Its a more fulfilling emotionally for me than Memento which was a very clever film, infact very very smart movie..but lacked a bit of soul.
yeah Dombivili is a good example of that. 36 Chowringee Lane…I dont know about that. besides i saw that film as a kid.
Nicholas Cage should be stripped & raped by demons for selling his soul in such a shameless manner.
Just IMDB’ed Peppermint Candy. Thanks for recommending it.
hmmm mainak when u compare mmemento with irreversible .. i dunno what to say.
Hoever smart memento might be.. i think it has a very definitive soul. Yes it is a clever movie .. but u dnt get the view that the Christopher nolan has simply made the film to use the reverse anthoology format story narration. I mean the film wasnt made just for that sole puepose. The film justifies the format IMO
Peppermint candy and irrevrsible are up next on my dvd list
“Nicholas Cage should be stripped & raped by demons for selling his soul in such a shameless manner” - aaah my dear friend. Welcome to the club
U guys really think Nicholas cage is a great actor??I don`t remember any notable performances from him, except
If he is a great actor or no is very arguable. I find him very irritating. But there is no doubt he did some very good movies with some very cool people. Have you seen his film with CHER called MOONSTRUCK? its awesome. Then RAISING ARIZONA.
AMOS & ANDREWS is hilarious.
WILD AT HEART with Lynch. LEAVING LAS VEGAS was good.
His last really good work was ADAPTATION. I love that movie.
What is he doing now? GHOST RIDER. Come On … Even Van Damme might reject that movie.
not a big fan of nicholas cage… but i really remember liking “the family man” with tea leoni and don cheadle. very simple film, very nicely done. and he was believable for me. national treasure was timepass.. they’re shooting the sequel about 20mins away from me as i type this.. have a few friends who are extras in it, and they said they’re having a blast shooting for it
